IT’S ALL HERE... Wagga Wagga is the theatrical hub of Southern NSW. It’s home to three theatres – the Riverina Playhouse, the Basement and the Civic Theatre – and more than six theatre troupes, so there’s a different performance to catch every time you visit. The Riverina Conservatorium is the third largest regional conservatorium in Australia and is a must if you enjoy a live classical music performance. From Mozart to Schubert, the Conservatorium holds more than 30 public concerts every year, showcasing the talents of its 1400 students, as well as local, national and international performing artists. Our City is bustling with art galleries and museums. The Historic Council Chambers in the Civic Precinct was originally Wagga Wagga’s Town Hall and Municipal Offices as well as the seat of Local Government until 1999 when it was converted into the Museum of the Riverina. Now it’s a space for an eclectic mix of both in-house and travelling curated exhibitions. www.visitwagga.com // ART & CULTURE

explore, discover & uncover At the Museum of the Riverina’s Botanic Gardens site, you can explore our City through stories, memories and collections. It will give you an insight into the people, places and events that give Wagga Wagga its unique character. As well as frequently changing exhibitions, the museum’s other attractions - Kidzone, Kidztrack and the Wagga Wagga Sporting Hall of Fame - makes this a great place for families, with regular school holiday events and a dedicated discovery and play space for children ages 5-12. For art lovers, Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, in the heart of the city, is an innovative public gallery with an impressive 2000 works in its collection. The architect– designed space also houses temporary exhibitions. An Artist in Residence Studio, an E3 art space and a range of stimulating public education programs adds to the allure of this amazing attraction. For a real wow factor, Australia’s largest collection of studio production glass art can be found here, in the National Art Glass Gallery. The 500-piece collection features blown, engraved, etched, kiln fired, cast and sand blasted glass art from renowned international and Australian artists. The collection is housed in a purpose-built architectural masterpiece, shaped like a splinter of glass that has shattered away from the main civic building.

Every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, Wagga Wagga’s Steam and Vintage Museum is open from 10.30am-3pm. Bring the whole family along to view the vintage steam and oil engines on display. An enjoyable and educational outing, free of charge! If you like your history up close, spend an afternoon retracing Wagga Wagga’s eventful past by taking one of its heritage walks. Starting from the Visitor Information Centre, there are two walks to choose from. Both wind around our significant buildings and sites, including the impressive St Andrew’s Church and Hall, built in the Gothic Revival style in 1869; the Historic Council Chambers, originally the site of a staging depot for Cobb & Co. coaches and the Old Federal Brewery. If you’d like to take a walk to see where Wagga Wagga’s traditional custodians, the Wiradjuri people, used to tread, try the Wiradjuri Walking Track. The track follows a perimeter route of 30km, including parts of the Murrumbidgee River, and has 11 established access points. Feel free to join or leave the track at any point along the way.

Whether you fish from bank or boat, you’ll have plenty of choice in the region and an excellent chance of landing a fish such as the iconic Murray cod, or the hard fighting golden perch. Along the banks of the Murrumbidgee River are stunning reserves perfect if you like walking and camping. Half an hour’s drive east or west along the Sturt Highway, the broad acre farmland is interspersed with Crown reserves with access to the river. Here, you’ll find a bird-watchers paradise, with cockatoos, galahs, corellas, rosellas and other parrots, as well as ducks, pelicans, cormorants and ibis. And at night, as you enjoy stargazing, listen out for the call of the Bookbook Owl.

For a selection of less rugged outdoor experiences to be enjoyed in and around Wagga Wagga, The Victory Memorial Gardens in the central business district is home to water lilies, ducks and water birds – make sure you visit the Memorial Arch and Eternal Flame while you’re there as a reminder of those who served our country.

Step back in time at Collins Park and admire the gorgeous original gas lamps dotted throughout the park, or breathe in the fresh air and dip your toes into the refreshing water at Wagga Beach. Whatever takes your fancy, Wagga Wagga’s splendid natural surrounds and scenery is guaranteed to leave you feeling energized and refreshed. A delight for the senses.

FACTS ABOUT WAGGA WAGGA:

TO WAGGA WAGGA FROM:

DAY TRIPS spread your wings We’re surrounded by quaint townships that beg to be explored, such as Tarcutta and Uranquinty. Steeped in history, these villages are where you’ll find thought provoking memorials dedicated to RAAF history, migrant settlement or the National Truck Drivers Memorial. Better still, the locals will delight in telling you their “great yarns”! For natural attractions, head to Berry Jerry State Forest, our river reserves, picnic spots or beaches like Kolhagens and Oura. Whatever type of experience you’re looking for on your day out, you’ll find it all within an easy drive of Wagga Wagga.

COOLAMON, JUNEE AND LOCKHART The neighbouring towns of Coolamon, Junee and Lockhart each have distinctive character and attractions. Take a short drive to Lockhart and

32

DAY TRIPS // www.visitwagga.com

marvel at the heritage–listed facades and verandahs you’ll find in the town’s main street. The Up-To-Date Store is a must see when visiting charming Coolamon. Be spooked by the past at Junee’s historic Monte Cristo Homestead, said to be Australia’s most haunted house, or treat yourself to a tour of the Junee Licorice and Chocolate factory, then savour the moment with a beautiful organic coffee or Devonshire Tea.

TUMUT, TUMBARUMBA AND GUNDAGAI For some mountain magic, why not travel to the towns of Tumut and Tumbarumba? At Tumut, situated at the northern foothills of the Snowy Mountains, you can try trout fishing or take in the country ambience at the Tumut Valley African Violet Farm. Or discover the intriguing history of Tumbarumba, famous for its

goldmining, timber and cattle. You’ll love learning about horsemanship, mustering and whip cracking at the two-hour live Boggy Creek Show, where you’ll see working kelpies trying to keep the naughty sheep under control!

TARCUTTA

While you’re in this area, you’d be mad not to visit beguiling Gundagai where you’ll come up close and personal with the ‘Dog on the Tuckerbox’ – one of Australian folklore’s best-known monuments.

Tarcutta has a long historical association with the transport industry and the local park houses the National Truck Drivers’ Memorial. Hidden in the surrounding hills is a vast amount of pioneer history, from the former Tarcutta Railway Station to several lone graves that have stories to tell.

COOTAMUNDRA AND TEMORA For sport enthusiasts, a trip to Cootamundra would not be complete without visiting Sir Donald Bradman’s Birthplace. For an adrenalin rush, take to the skies with a tandem skydive at Temora. The town is also home to the Temora Aviation Museum; its collection of historic aircraft is one of Australia’s finest. The museum regularly hosts flying weekends, where a selection of the aircraft takes flight in aerobatic and handling displays.

a treasure waiting to be discovered.

Located halfway between Sydney and Melbourne on the Hume Highway and only 43 kms south east of Wagga Wagga.
