Working out how to find a job is tough these days and if you are one of the many people who hate your job, you need to make sure that you don't go from one bad job to another. In an economic crisis, it's all too easy to panic and take the first job you are offered because you are afraid that you won't get anything else. So, how do you avoid jumping from the frying pan into the fire? The first step is to really understand the job you are applying for - what is your daily routine likely to look like? Or is it a job in which there is very little routine? Will you be working as part of a team or expected to get on with things, working on your own initiative? Will you be coming face to face with clients, dealing with them by email or telephone or will you be working behind the scenes? Which tasks will you be expected to perform and which new skills will you need to learn? The next question you need to ask yourself is - how well do I fit this job? There is obviously some overlap between this and the first question, but you need to look at your ability to do the job and your level of interest in it, as well as the potential for development. At the moment you may only be thinking of a job to pay to the bills, which is important. But think about the future too. You don't want to find that in six months' time you are bored out of your mind. And because the recession has really kicked in, you are even more unlikely to be able to get a new job. So look carefully at the job you are in - the one you hate. Work out what it is you hate about it and what you'd rather be doing. Make a list of what you would ideally like to do in your new job. Then look at the the job you are applying for. Is it offering what you'd rather be doing? Realistically, you probably won't get absolutely everything you want in one job, but go for some tasks that you most want to do. As you read each job description, give the things you really want to do two ticks, that is the tasks
which excite and motivate you. Then give the things which you are perfectly happy to do one tick. Put a question mark next to things which you would prefer not to do, but would be ok with, provided there was enough stimulation elsewhere. Things you don't want to do get an X and things you would do under no circumstances get 2 Xs. If a job gets a double X, you won't be applying. So that one can go in the bin right now. For all the others, go back to your wish list and see if there is anything critical missing from the job description you have in front of you. Write those under the word Missing, either on the job description or a separate piece of paper. Now add everything up and balance it out. It's up to you to decide how far you will compromise. Three double ticks might make up for 2 single Xs, but only you can make that decision. If you hate your job, this exercise will help you focus on what you really want and highlight the things you want to avoid. It will help you set priorities and make more positive decisions, enabling you to move from a job you hate to one you love.
