A credit card shouldn’t stop you from maximizing both the fun and function of your phone! How many times have we veered away from paid apps and stuck to free ones just because we couldn’t—or were hesitant, for security reasons—to provide the all-important payment details? Sure, there are a lot of cool free apps out there—but we should know when to pay a premium for a great added feature or essential upgrade. Today’s tech-savvy generation has skirted the sensitive issue of pre-approval and credit limits by developing novel ways to pay for online transactions (like PayPal or mobile banking) so it was only a matter of time when this generation’s most trusted gadget would pay to upgrade itself. Here comes Globe Direct Carrier Billing partnered with Google Play: all your downloads and purchases can now be charged directly to your postpaid line or deducted from your prepaid account! Imagine the possibilities for gamers: How many times has your lack of a
credit card or confusion about how to purchase that in-app gem or credit stopped you from leveling up on your favorite game? Hassle—games are all about the fun! But now, your in-app upgrades and purchases of extra lives or premium items are now yours for the taking. Are you a pop culture vulture who thrives on the latest music and books? Consider downloading that album or e-book you’ve been eyeing right now (and face it, with traffic the way that it is you’ll be glad to have your hands on that in real time!) A great bonus: carrier billing means worrying less about going overboard with spending or compromising your security. You’re always updated and notified of your purchases as you make them. There are no secret numbers or security questions to worry about. You have more control, less stress, and lots more time and energy to just enjoy the possibilities of Google Play.

“Don’t be afraid. My father-in-law taught me to always dream. Tell it to yourself every day, and eventually you will get it,”
Big Cheese Size Matters’ JR Dela Paz takes a unique business idea hot off the grill and cooks it to perfection.

Keeping your day job while running a startup business is like attempting the impossible, but Size Matters owner JR Dela Paz thought none of it. “I would be on the phone with suppliers while I was at the office, go straight to the branch after work, and spend my weekends attending to the business,” he says. This went on for three years until he decided to resign from his job in 2013. As far as JR is concerned, the only reason the setup worked was that he prioritized putting reliable communication facilities in place. “We have access to Internet, e-mail, and chat. The CCTV is a very helpful tool because I can see what is happening in the branch even when I’m away. Connectivity has always been key,” JR adds. Connectivity truly is essential for a business thriving in the internet age, so entreps really have to seek out the best ways to be present and stay consistently online. Size Matters’ ever-reliable partner is Globe myBusiness, whose keen understanding of JR’s business needs and goals allows him to customize his burgeoning enterprise’s broadband requirements at a cost that’s comfortable for an SME like him. He has a strong internet connection to interact with suppliers via chat and email, as well as with valued customers on social media platforms. His business is also boosted by a Globe landline that allows him to reach out to customers, too. A self-confessed burger fan together with his wife, JR entered the restaurant scene in 2011 with Size Matters, specializing in unique sausage burgers. Size Matters is now on its way to opening its fourth branch in Metro Manila. JR describes, “We did our research and didn’t see anyone else serving sausages in the form of burgers. Over the years, customers have shown preference for different things, so we tried to infuse other items like potato products, pasta, and rice meals. Now we have our southwestern barbecue lines – chicken, pork chops, and ribs. These are our bestsellers now aside from burgers.” JR is cooking up more exciting things for Size Matters, one of which is bringing this 100 percent Filipino concept to the

rest of the country, and then to Asia and the United States. He measures success by how his pioneer team has taken on more important roles in the company. “After all, you go into business not only to make money but also to help your employees make their lives better,” adds JR. Like any entrepreneur, JR saw a good opportunity and was brave enough to take the risk. He offers the same advice to aspiring entrepreneurs. “Don’t be afraid. My father-in-law taught me to always dream. Tell it to yourself every day, and eventually you will get it,” says the young entrepreneur who did just that.

Hoops Fever
The 2014-2015 NBA season is in full swing and there’s no denying it: that familiar electric excitement in the air will last all throughout next year. So, what’s the fuss all about this time around? Read on and bring your thrill for the games to new heights, leaps, and bounds. “Anybody can win it all this year,” is a usual line pundits throw around at the beginning of each NBA season. However, this statement couldn’t be truer for this year’s edition. While it’s only natural to predict a repeat performance from the defending champions
San Antonio Spurs, a lot could happen between now, the Playoffs battles, and the Finals. Between notable player movements (Cleveland’s prodigal son returning home to name one of many) and both conferences looking more competitive than ever (the Dallas Mavericks
and Brooklyn Nets look more than just like dark horses), any game could go either way for any two teams that go at it on game night. Unless you’ve got unshakable team loyalties (Lakers Nation, hang in there!), whom do you root for? Here’s where you could start.
Toughest Teams to Beat
12
Team: Chicago Bulls
Team: San Antonio Spurs
Team: Golden State Warriors
Team: Miami Heat
Why: With the acquisition of Center Pau Gasol during the off-season, the team just got more dynamic, offensively and defensively. While star-player shooting guard Derrick Rose’s health may be in question throughout the season, they’ve still got a number of weapons to rely on: Power forward Joakim Noah for under-the-basket defense and shooting guard Jimmy Butler’s scoring.
Why: Yes, their three aging superstars (Point guard Tony Parker, Shooting guard Manu Ginobili, Center Tim Duncan) ramp up their bodies’ mileage for another grueling 82game season. But, they’ve got one of the cleverest minds in the sport’s history, Greg Popovich, as their head coach. And, no one in the league has really broken down Pop’s strategy just yet.
Why: When their shooters are on point—guards Klay Thompson and Steph Curry—they are simply unstoppable because they just score at will. They’ve got big men that could haul rebounds and guard the paint to boot. Thompson and Steph Curry—they are simply unstoppable because they just score at will. They’ve got big men that could haul rebounds and guard the paint to boot.
Why:These guys have competed in the league’s finals for the last four years. Of course, each trip was with LeBron James, the planet’s best basketball player, but what makes them a dangerous squad to be up against is that they know what it takes to win. They’ve got a tried-and-tested system led by two of the best in the game, shooting guard Dwayne Wade and Center Chris Bosh.

Forward-Power Forward, Cleveland Cavaliers In the MVP-race because: Four-time league MVP is on a tear and is showing no signs of slowing down. Plus, he’s surrounded by talents like point guard Kyrie Irving and Power forward Kevin Love—both of whom can pass, dribblepenetrate to the basket, and shoot. There’s no question that he racks up his points and can create plays for his teammates on a nightly basis.

CALLUM DAVID @callumdavid1
@callumdavid1
TOP DJ TIP: “I listen to the radio and do a lot of research on my own.” Growing up in Australia, Callum was often invited to be a DJ for friends’ house parties and birthday celebrations. Years of practice turned him into a house music DJ, until one day he took it up professionally at the clubs. “My music depends on what mood I’m in, but I like to keep people happy, and keep the crowd dancing,” Callum describes. INSIDE A DJ’S MIND Callum likens playing for a crowd to playing in a house with a group of friends: “Most DJs get into a comfort zone, with feelings of happiness and just the regular worries of anyone who’s having a party: why is my beer too warm? I’ve got to get another one.”
In Their Element DJs Badkiss, Callum David, Mars Miranda, and Eric Capili have their diverse styles and unique beats capturing crowds of partygoers everywhere. What’s their take on the next big thing in the music scene? 16
“Spotify opens you up to a whole world of opportunities and options. It’s impossible for you not to put together a crazy set that will rock your crowd.“ - Mars
MARS MIRANDA @marsmiranda
@marsmiranda
TOP DJ TIP: “DJs now have better access to music – even stuff you never heard before. You can go through it and if you like it, you can incorporate it into your set.” While in his teens, Mars wanted to be “just like the older guys in the neighborhood” who were DJs. He turned professional in his 20s, with no particular preference for genre. “I want to play everything: hiphop, old school stuff, disco. But I try to mix everything because the audience is diverse. You have to cater to what they want to hear,” Mars says. ALL FOR THE CROWD At every gig, Mars has one thing in mind: to make the night worth it for the crowd. “I just want to see people in front of me with all that energy, and feed off of it. They came out to see you and it’s your responsibility to show them a good time,” he says.

ERIC CAPILI facebook.com/eric.b.capili
TOP DJ TIP: “Sa mga bagong gadgets, plus apps like Spotify – that’s where you’ll discover new music.” Eric has come a long way from his days as a mobile disco DJ. After gaining enough confidence and experience, he tried his luck at clubs. He is now a sought-after DJ in Boracay where he is based. “It’s a different feeling kapag napapasayaw mo talaga yung mga tao,” Eric shares. BRINGING THE BORACAY VIBE Having played for different audiences in Boracay and in Manila, Eric is not one to come prepared with a playlist. “I like being challenged to play what the crowd likes. Hinuhuli ko yung kiliti nila. It’s like I’m in a relationship with my music – kailangan dalawa kaming magbibigay ng best namin para sa crowd.”
Watch out for Mars, Callum, Badkiss, and Eric at #theNextACT, happening at the Sinulog and Dinagyang Festivals 2015.

CHRISTINA BARTGES (BADKISS) @missbadkiss
@iAmMissBadKiss
TOP DJ TIP: “I respect where the music that we listen to today comes from. “ A natural love for music led Christina to this profession. Describing her style as eclectic, Christina likes to play a combination of old and new songs. What sets her off into a direction in terms of her music is usually an emotion: “I play what I feel in my set, so if I’m upbeat and positive then that is how the music is going to turn out.” EXPLORING POSSIBILITIES As far as Christina is concerned, all the technology today makes it easy for people just to make their own beat. But a real musician is free to explore the possibilities without having to think about the basics. “Because it has become second nature to you, then you can be more creative,” she says.
“With Spotify, I get exclusives that are not released, or that are special somehow and no one else has them. These are my weapons – you can’t have them. That’s how you dig nowadays.” - Christina

Welcome to
Gen 3
It’s not just a store—it’s the next big idea, a never-before-seen innovation, and most importantly: an experience.
Note: This photo is the design perspective only
Designed by Tim Kobe, founder and CEO of Eight, Inc. and designer of Apple Stores and Nike pop-up stores, the Globe Gen 3 stores are set to change the retail landscape.
Outside is a freestanding sculptural element that is meant to attract people. Then, as people begin to ask questions, it starts to tell stories. This curiosity will then draw people inside the store. Kobe describes it as a very open and inviting store:
“The new Globe experience is a paradigm shift for telecommunications companies.” -Tim Kobe, Founder and CEO, Eight Inc. 20
Apple Store, New York Designed by Eight Inc.
“I see Globe as becoming more essential to its customers by becoming closer and more relevant. There are different armatures for information, there is a series of movable elements suspended from the ceiling that moves across the space. They can be reconfigured for an event, you can slide them over and create an announcement, or slide them out and create four stories. The idea is to create windows into what technology can do. These windows will frame stories about different
topics that Globe offers and different technology solutions. These stories will continue to change.” Speaking of change, a noticeable one is the disappearance of lines-something a busy customer is sure to commend. “There will still be a service point, but when you think about telcos, the first thing that comes to mind is long queues and this incredibly torturous behavior. We want to enhance your life. You come in and if you want to make a transaction, you

log in and enjoy the space and explore things. We’ve taken away the lines. Globe is transforming the customer experience in the Philippines and it will send shock waves far beyond,” Kobe says. “The transactions are distributed throughout the space.” This in itself elevates Gen3 from a mere store to an actual space, where possibilities and genuine interactions are free to form. There are many other in-store features that Kobe is excited about. All of them, he says, are designed to connect with customers. In today’s world, it’s all about the connections--enriching old ones, creating new ones, forging possible ones where none were before. “If you can connect with people with a meaningful story, you engage them. If we’re being generous with helping people be successful, the respect and love for the brand will continue to grow. We really want to empower people,” says Kobe. The only way to appreciate all of this? Allow yourself to be drawn inside.
Gone is the usual store set-up—what you will experience is a series of ever-changing lifestyle vignettes designed to catch your attention. You’ll get the feeling that the space is alive, as the topography of the store is reconfigurable and interactive. You’ll want to come in again and again because there’s always something new to experience in the different zones of the new Gen3 stores. Products are readily available and creatively show within these zones, making the opportunity to encounter something new as organic as possible. You can now be part of this innovation at two of Globe’s biggest stores, in SM North EDSA, Manila and Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro.
Before the future of Globe was unveiled, the stores were boarded up and continuously embellished and changed with a mural from dynamic Filipino artists, led by celebrated artist and ArtPhilippines founder Ross Capili. Every two weeks, artists like Rem San Pedro and Joey and Archie Balcos added their signature touches to the growing pieces at both sites. This is all part of the Arts, Community and Technology (ACT) initiative of Globe, where the artists were inspired by a theme that encouraged them to bridge the past and the future. Enthralled onlookers witnessed the live performance while many art enthusiasts took to social media with the hashtag #Gen3nextACT.

Mall goers at SM North Edsa stopped to watch how the artist adds and transforms the canvas into a one of a kind mural.
