We Get It! ARTS, PRODUCTION & DESIGN

“ My biggest advice to any staff member is time management and learning to rely on others, and having them rely on you. Like any normal family, you are going to have your ups and downs. Keep your humor and sanity, and you’ll make a good yearbook.”

- Katie Smith 2011-2012 Staff member

Preserving the memories Over 40 years ago, when the yearbook program was in its infancy, the staff attempted to come up with a name for the annual. Although many ideas were tossed around, confusion ensued as people had difficulty differentiating the name of the annual with the theme for the year. After some time, the staff decided to honor the Spanish heritage found within the Mission Hills community, along with the founders of the San Fernando Mission, which stood adjacent to the school. The staff chose the Spanish word Recuerdos which means ‘memories, souvenir or a memento’. And that’s what our BAHS yearbook is dedicated to preserving, one picture at a time. Currently we are in the production of our 57th Volume for the Recuerdos yearbook, which continues to chronicled the history of Bishop Alemany High School. A publication of student body & Taylor Publishing, the award-winning Recuerdos is entirely student-produced. Journalistic reporting on academic, clubs, student life, sports teams and student organizations of BAHS make up the core of each Recuerdos, and the 2010 book will be no different. The staff of the Recuerdos hopes that the 2010 book will represent the diversity in thought, culture and desires that abound at BAHS through interesting stories and powerful photography. The Recuerdos is published by students at BAHS, for students at BAHS that is about students at BAHS.

“ Being in yearbook has been such a great experience. Not only did I learn so much about the programs, but I also made a family; who was there for me every step of the way, & they will always have a place in my heart .” - Megan Baylis 2011 staff member

“ An adviser’s job is to develop a strong foundation so that the staff can work creatively and independently. ” - Paul Apolinario 2007-2012 Yearbook Adviser

Class Description

“ I expected to learn about photography, InDesign & Photoshop, but I also I learned to lead a group of 22 staff members while effectively multi-tasking everything else in my life. “ - Charlene Flores 2011 Editor in Chief The yearbook production course is an elective course with beginning and advanced levels in which students learn the techniques and principles of yearbook journalism, the graphic principles of layout and design, and the fundamentals of managing a small business. We conduct a practical course designed to produce the official yearbook for the school. The goal of the staff is to produce a journalistically sound, creative, and unique book on time and within a budget; foster student growth in journalism and graphic design; develop leadership skills; and provide experience in business management. All phases of yearbook production, including photography, copy writing, page layout, and book and advertisement sales are included. Students develop abilities in gathering information, writing copy and captions, understanding components of quality photography, copy editing skills, and techniques of headlines. Students are introduced to and begin to develop skills in the use of Adobe InDesign & Photoshop. The concept of accurate photojournalism is balanced with the need to present the events, activities, and personalities of the school year in a positive manner.

Senior salutations

“ It’s fun to put together all those memories for my friends. I help make the dreams of the parents come to a reality; that makes me feel good.“ - Vanessa Freedman The Recuerdos yearbook is proud to offer over 70 pages to parents of graduating seniors an opportunity to honor the graduate of whom they are so proud. A Senior salutation in the Recuerdos yearbook, which will be delivered in the early Spring, offers parents the opportunity to recognize the accomplishment of their graduating senior through a full-color advertisement. Personal salutations have proven to be a very popular means to express love, admiration, friendship, and congratulations to sons, daughters, relatives, friends, or teammates. That way, when they look back upon their senior year, they will remember your contributions to them during their years in high school.

Yearbook summer camp

“ Camp gave us the chance to bond before the year began. It made it more comfortable work with everyone. “ - Andrew Fernandez There are thousands of stories waiting to be told. As a yearbook staff, it is OUR obligation to make sure that OUR school’s story is being told. We can’t just create a book that could be the story for any school, it must be uniquely OURS. This year, we, the advisers will help the staff to look at ways to tell those stories on campus that will make students want to read and remember all that happened. It is not as hard as students might think, but they do have to think. We are going to encourage the staff to look at the way you cover our school, and get them to not only think outside the box, but to redesign it. By attending Ignite Yearbook University, students will receive training in layout, graphic design, photography, copy writing, trends, headlines, staff management, advertising, coverage, leadership, new adviser survival and, of course, THERE will be fun! When they leave, the staff should have their book completely planned, including all layouts, ladder theme, new coverage ideas, design skills, leadership skills, and a renewed enthusiasm for doing a great book.

Get involved

“ Being on staff allowed me to discover talents I never knew I had. This was always the class I looked forward to the most. “ - Nicole Villanueva If you like to write, if you love photography, if you’ve got an eye for design and want to help produce a book that your fellow students will appreciate for years to come, then the Recuerdos staff just may be the student group for you. The Recuerdos is entirely student-produced. Staff members write and edit stories, design and layout the pages, and shoot the photographs which make up this award winning yearbook. We’re always happy to welcome motivated students to our staff, so if you’re interested in being part of this year’s team, don’t hesitate to sign on!

“ I joined because I was interested in design and photography, but I learned so much more.” — Jerry Chitmongran 2011 staff member
