Hornell Community Garden Yields First Return The green space adjacent to the Hornell Area Family YMCA is looking even greener these days. The Hornell Community Garden, a cooperative project of the Hornell YMCA, United Presbyterian Church of Hornell, Turning Point, and the Hornell Sunday Meals Program is now in full swing. Working to reduce food insecurity for Hornell area residents, the first pickings of lettuce and spinach have been provided to Turning Point Hornell site director Bill Herrick for food pantry distribution by Lisa Sanford, a garden volunteer. The community garden has been positively impacting our community well before the first food was harvested. The garden project led by Rev. Katherine Griffis has already brought together local faith leaders, charitable nonprofits, and passionate volunteers in a shared effort to strengthen the foundations of our community. Even the youth of Hornell have been involved in the project. Participants in the YMCA’s school age care program have used the garden to learn about the environment and nutrition while actively participating in the planting and care of the garden. To learn how you can help contact Katherine Griffis at kgriffis@presbyhornell.org.
