A Dream Demolished The dream of a real Larry’s Country Diner in Nashville was torn away in July when the unfinished building was demolished to make way for a private emergency room facility. The original plan had been to not only be a restaurant but a venue for live performances as well as a studio to tape “Larry’s Country Diner” show. Lending institutions couldn’t understand the concept and were unsure they could recoup their money, so construction halted.

Dan Miller Takes Cowboy Music Nationwide While working on a dairy farm in his home state of Indiana, Dan Miller dreamed of movies, music and the entertainment industry After attending college on a football scholarship, he headed to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams. In L.A. Miller studied acting, worked in radio and television and performed in clubs. Those jobs led to the stages of Reno, Tahoe and Las Vegas and a touring schedule that took him from Alaska to Florida. Long before he was hosting television shows like “PBR Bull Riding,” “American Magazine” and “Due West,” he was playing the showrooms of Nevada with The Dan Miller Band. When he moved to Nashville to pursue a recording career, Miller found more opportunities existed for him there in television, commercials and voice over work. Over the next 15 years he hosted a variety of television shows including the Cable ACE award winning Top Card and conventions for national corporations including Toyota and Subaru. In 2015 Miller was Awarded the Excellence in Broadcast Journalism Award by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association for his work hosting national telecasts on TNN, ESPN, RDF-TV, The Outdoor Channel and GAC. After Miller and his family moved to Cody, Wyoming, he continued to host tele vision shows including “Xtreme Bulls” on GAC and “The Best of the West” on the Outdoor Channel. For the past 18 years, Miller has entertained more than 180,000 people from 70 countries with his Dan Miller’s Cowboy Music Revue based in Cody, which includes his daughter, Hannah, and musician Wendy Corr. Hannah Miller has performed onstage with her dad since age six. She would appear to recite a cowboy poem, her dad would give her a dollar, and she would exit until the next night’s performance. At the age of nine, Hannah began

Soon after she added harmony vocals, becoming a full- edged member of the band after adding the mandolin to her repertoire of musical skills. Hannah recently graduated from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences with her Master’s degree in speech language pathology. Corr joined the band in 2008 as bass player and harmony vocalist. Corr’s musical background goes back to her college years as a musical theatre major. She has performed onstage in community theatre productions, as well as singing for local events for many years A mom of two grown children, Corr stays very busy outside her performances in the Cowboy Music Revue. She is a freelance journalist, contributing to the Cowboy State Daily website and as a television news correspondent for KGWN-TV and KULR-8 Television. She ser ves as music director at the First Presbyterian Church in Cody, and she works with clients as a certi ed holistic nutritionist. The trio has performed more than 2,000 shows together from east coast to west coast Many of Miller’s fellow musicians in Nashville have accepted his invitation to perform in Cody. Performers such as Mel Tillis, The Bellamy Brothers, Kathy Mattea, Billy Dean, Suzy Bogguss and Ed Bruce have entertained audiences in Cody as part of Miller’s “Cody Wild West Shows.” Some renowned performers who visited Codt have become fans. “The highlight of our wonderful vacation in Cody was the evening we spent at Dan Miller’s Cowboy Music Revue,” said Barbara Mandrell, two-Time CMA Entertainer of the Year. “It is truly a fantastic, thoroughly entertaining variety show!” In early March 2022 Miller took his group back to his home state for a performance in Warsaw, Indiana, at the Wagon Wheel Playhouse. “Great opportunity to reconnect with friends and family, and the blessing of making new friends, as well,” Miller said. “We are blessed… and back on the road again!” Miller’s Cowboy Music Revue has recently been featured on “Larry’s Country Diner” in a taped visit to the show from earlier this summer.

International Western Music Association

IWMA (International Western Music Association) presents Country Western Night with Bobby Marquez, The Farmer & Adele, and Mary Kaye Holt. The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville was the site for the International Western Music Association - Tennessee Chapter songwriters round in July. The round consisted of Marquez, Mary Kaye Hurt and The Farmer and Adele. The International Western Music Association is an organization that encourages and supports the preservation, performance and composition of historic traditional and contemporary music and poetry of The West. Members are from the United States, Australia, Canada, England, Spain and Switzerland. Western Music is the folk music of the Western lifestyle and vista. Some Western Music originates from roots in English, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh ballads, as well as musical in uences from the European countries of immigrants who “went west” and some carries jazz and blues origins. While “Cowboy” music is an important part of the history of Western Music, the stories and lifestyles of the larger populations of Western culture are equally important: settlers, farmers, ranchers, horsemen and women, soldiers and the women who accompanied them into the west, miners, opportunists, gamblers, saloon keepers, school teachers, and other town folk who populated the great American West are all subjects of modern-day Western Music. Traces of classic country, jazz and Tin Pan Alley songwriting interweave throughout the group’s topnotch musicianship. The record also features a collaborative guest appearance from Grammy Awardwinning western swing icons Riders in The Sky, who backed the band throughout the album’s eight tracks. The Farmer & Adele also host their own daily radio show. “On The Trail with The Farmer & Adele” features cuts of classic tunes and original songs performed by the band. The segment regularly brings in guest hosts who share a love of cowboy music including Ranger Doug of Riders In The Sky, Lisa Sutton (Lynn Anderson’s daughter) and Reluctant Cowboy Chris Bauer, among others. The show is sponsored by D’Addario and airs worldwide every morning on WSM Route 650 Americana. The band is also featured regularly on 650 AM WSM as the house band during the station’s Grand Ole Opry preshow and live radio spot coverage. Onward to Nashville with the encouragement of record executives, where he got his nickname Smilin’ Bob from WSM Grand Ole Opry announcer Keith Bilbrey who noted that he was always smiling. Marquez remains humble and extremely grateful for all of the accolades, including several awards for his music from the AWA and CMA of Texas, but a few are especially dear to his heart. The awardwinning song, “The Cowboy Way” is a tribute to his late father-in-law and his integrity, produced by the legendary Western Music Hall of Fame star Rex Allen Jr. His love for music and people is evident in the light of his eye on stage. But just as important is the work he does behind the scenes, his songwriting. Marquez’s songs have been recorded by Alan Jackson, Ty Herndon, George Strait, Rhonda Vincent and Johnny Rodriguez, Bobby has shared the stage with The Bellamy Brothers, Dennis Quaid, Mickey Gilley, Ray Price, Mel Tillis, Johnny Rodriguez, Martina McBride, David Ball, Janie Fricke, Johnny Lee and Lonestar... just to name a few The IWMA will hold its annual convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Nov. 9 -13, 2022. Tickets are available to anyone wishing to attend and are discounted for members. www.iwesternmusic.org

Bobby Marquez, Country Bobby Marquez has a charismatic smile and refreshing tongue-in-cheek, but heartfelt, honkytonk style that stirs an energy with audiences worldwide. The Texas-born singer/songwriter is reaching crowds far and wide on radio, national television appearances and tours across the U.S., Australia and Ireland, earning several awards from such notable organizations as the Grammys, The CMA of Texas, the Academy of Western Artists and induction into The Wheeling Jamboree. That musical path began in the small South Texas town of Freer, where Bobby taught himself to play guitar on an old guitar his cousin found too frustrating to learn and threw in the trash. countryreunionmagazine.com

Award-winning Fried Peach Pies Enjoy delicious summer peaches with this easy recipe – Tennessee State Fair “Best of Show” winner!

Ingredients: Approx. 3 cups fresh cooked peaches, drained Additional Crisco for frying pies Pastry: 1. Cut shortening into our 2. Combine vinegar and buttermilk, and slowly blend into our/shortening 3. Turn dough ball out onto a oured pastry cloth. Roll very thin, adding slight amount of sifted our to cloth, hands and rolling pin, as needed, to prevent stickiness. 4. Using a 5” cookie cutter, cut out 7-8 pie crusts. Less number of crusts would mean dough is not rolled thin enough (which is secret to a delicate and aky pie crust). 5. Spoon approximately 2 tablespoons of cooked peaches on half of crust. Gently fold over other half and ute edge to seal. 6. While lling pastry, heat electric skillet to 380-400 degrees. (in a 12” skillet, fry 3-4 at a time.) 7. Fry 3 minutes or until golden brown, then gently turn for 3 minutes on other side. Place on drain rack. A homemade tender aky crust and juicy sweet peaches (that have a bit of sharpness) make a delicious ied pie; my favorite peach is the “Contender”. 10 Years Ago this Month Andy Gri th Dies of Heart Attack Andy Gri th wasn’t an award-winning singer, but he won the respect of generations of country music artists and fans. After all, he began his career as a Country comedian touring with some of the great Country entertainers of the 1950s. The actor, best known as the star of “Matlock” and “The Andy Gri th Show,” died Tuesday morning, July 3, 2012, at his home in eastern North Carolina. Andy Gri th’s background as a singer and guitarist were obvious during the long run of “The Andy Gri th Show” in which he would periodically pull out a guitar to strum and sing a bit. He also welcomed the opportunity to incorporate other musicians onto the set. One such group was The Dillards, a bluegrass group from the Ozark Mountains who portrayed a family band called The Darlings. “Andy Gri th became more than an actor,” Dillard said in a statement issued Tuesday. “He represented American family values and has given comfort and hope in these uncertain times. He gave The Dillards an opportunity to be part of this. Andy was kind, generous and patient with an inexperienced group of pickers from the Andy as the Sheri Ozark Mountains.” Gri th had the persona as a source of common sense and gentle wisdom that prompted country singer Brad Paisley to seek him out when he made the music video for his 2008 single “Waitin’ on a Woman.” “Few people in this world will ever have more in uence on our lives than Andy Gri th,” Paisley said in a statement issued following Gri th’s death. “An actor who never looked like he was acting, a moral compass who saved as many souls as most preachers and an entertainer who put smiles on more faces than almost anyone; this was as successful a life as is pretty much possible. Andy Gri th made the world a better place, and I was so proud to call him a friend. Don Knotts' widow, Francey Yarborough Knotts, said in a statement Gri th was in good spirits when she spoke with him June 1, his birthday "Don and I loved Andy very much," she said. "Andy and Don had a great friendship and a great creative partnership. Throughout their lives, they continued to have fun together and discuss the art of comedy and acting. Andy as Matlock Gri th’s career took o after he recorded the comedic monologue "What It Was, Was Football.” His long career included stints on Broadway, notably "No Time for Sergeants"; movies such as Elia Kazan's "A Face in the Crowd"; and records. Gri th won a Grammy in 1997 for his album of gospel music "I Love to Te ll the Story - 25 Timeless Hymns. He was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts Hall of Fame in 1992 and in 2005, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the country's highest civilian honors.

"Some of us even went to school together. Luman noted that the show is made possible through the support of Gus Arrendale, owner of Springer Mountain Farms and a favorite among "Larry's Country Diner" viewers "He is greatly responsible for keeping traditional Country music alive," Luman said of Arrendale, who not only sponsors "Larry's Country Diner" and Ne x t G e n e r a t i o n c o n c e r t s , h i s s u p p o r t brings Bluegrass Nights at the Ryman to the public each summer Luman said that the event will be held in 2023 on the Thursday night of CMAFest. Follow Next generation on Facebook for more details.

Some of the highlights (of many) from the evening were: Rachel Hawkins and her father Hawkshaw Jr. sang Jean Shepard's million-seller song, "Slipping Away." Hawkshaw did a duet of "Dear John" with Jennifer Husky, recorded originally by her father, Ferlin, and his mother, Jean Shepard. Hawkshaw Hawkins Jr. recalled the purchase of his parents' farm. When Hawk Jr. introduced his father's song 'Lonesome 7-7203," he said, "That's the song that brought the barn." About Hawk's mother's hit duet, "Dear John," he said, "That's the song that bought the farm." Sweepy Walker wore the suit belonging to his grandfather, Billy Walker, as he sang “Funny How Time Slips Away’" that Willie Nelson wrote for his father. He recalled that Billy used to let Willie sleep on his couch when necessary. Cherish Lee sang a song she wrote about her father, Johnny, and recorded on one of his albums. Debby Campbell said that she had just come from Delight, Arkansas, where she had just visited Glen’s grave site. If a visitor walks close to his grave, a sensor prompts a recording of Glen singing "Amazing Grace." Debby said it could be alarming, especially late at night. Mel Tillis Jr. told a story about his father at the CMA awards show. He was smoking a pipe at his table when his name was called for the Entertainer of the Year award. He didn’t know what to do with it, so put it in his breast pocket and it slowly started burning his chest hair and nipples. Mel Jr. said a tear in his eye can be seen in the newspaper photos published after his win. Celebrated Nashville guitarist Eddie Lange headed up the ve-member band assembled for the event. Joe Spivey of the Time Jumpers was on ddle. When master of ceremonies introduced Robyn Young the band, he called them the "Pentecostal
