The Role of the USSR • Britain and France guaranteed the frontiers of Poland in April 1939 • They had no way of protecting Poland from attack • The USSR was the only country in a position to help Poland • Britain and France began talks with the USSR but Poland was as afraid of Soviet invasion as Nazi invasion! • Many people in Britain feared Communism more than Nazism • Britain and France showed no urgency in signing a deal with Stalin and he felt that they were trying to direct the Nazis east towards him rather than face them in the west.

Why did they sign ? • 10 year non aggression • 10 year non aggression pact, Hitler could invade pact. Stalin failed to get a Poland without worrying deal with Britain and France about the USSR and so made one with Hitler to protect the USSR • USSR gave Germany raw materials such as cotton, • Germany gave USSR military cereals, chemicals, wheat. equipment and machinery. Secret protocol: Germany and USSR agreed to divide Poland. Germany to invade from the West and USSR from the East. Both sides gained time from the deal. Hitler intended to attack the USSR eventually. Stalin knew an attack would come.

Consequences of the Nazi Soviet Pact • It made an attack on Poland by Hitler inevitable. Hitler had feared Soviet involvement but now knew they would not move against him at this time. • Hitler was more confident Britain and France would back down without the USSR as an ally. • Britain had lost a potential ally in the USSR, they had been best placed to oppose the invasion and now they would be taking part in it against Poland.
