Name the “big three above”._____________________________________________ The Yalta conference was held just before the end of World War Two (1945) Yalta is in the Crimea, part of the USSR. The meeting was regarded as a success. Germany were clearly going to be defeated, and they were drawing up plans for a post War settlement. Japan still remained a threat in the pacific. The following were agreed.       

Germany was to be divided into four zones, occupied by Britain, France, the USA and USSR. Berlin (in the USSR zone) was to be divided into four also. Nazi war criminals would be put on trial Free elections were to be held in Eastern European countries. Stalin would join the war in the pacific against Japan in return for land A UN (United Nations) was to be set up to replace the League of Nations. No agreement was reached on the frontiers of Poland, a critical situation.

Answer the following into your book. They MUST be done for next lesson. 1) Why do you think Germany would be divided up into four zones? Who do you think would be pushing for this and why? 2) Why might the Russians be worried about free elections in Eastern European countries (clue – think of Russian desires/buffer zones) 3) Why do you think the League of Nations would be replaced? (Think about what problems the League had in the 1930’s) 4) Why do you think Poland was such an important issue for the Russians?
