Welcoming a New Refugee Family! A young refugee mother, Lizet, and her 8-month-old daughter, Mariann, are arriving in New Bern next Tuesday night, January 17. Interfaith Refugee Ministry asked if we would be willing to help this family. A quick decision was made to help this small family. We know this is short notice and that lives are very busy, but hopefully you will be able to help with some of the following activities: - Welcoming the family at the airport. Tuesday, January 17, at 9:12pm. We will share the flight number once we get it. - Transportation to appointments. - Community guide, conversation, mentoring. This is the main reason we were asked to help. The mother speaks Spanish but little, if any, English. By visiting with the mother and daughter, we can help them with language acquisition and provide the mother with needed companionship. You do not have to speak Spanish to volunteer for this. That said, if you speak Spanish or know someone that might be willing to act as an interpreter, please let Deborah or Susan know at Interfaith Refugee Ministry. Breaking this mentoring/community guide activity into two parts, immediate and long-term: - Do you have any free time January 18 -January 29 to spend with Lizet and Mariann? If we can provide her some company as well as outings around New Bern, that will be helpful for her transition to our community. Please let us know if you have time for this, so we can develop a schedule and, hopefully, brainstorm activity ideas. Lizet will need to know who will be visiting and when they will be visiting. - Would you like to help Lizet learn English? Children are not allowed to attend IRM classes with their parents...so until childcare arrangements can be made, Lizet will need one on one tutoring. If you are interested in helping with this, please email us. For those interested in English tutoring, we will try to arrange a time to meet with the language instructors at IRM and learn about how they teach the language. Many thanks, Nell Hudson (nellrhudson@hotmail.com) the Rev. Cortney Dale (cortneydale@christchurchnewbern.com)
