During the colder winter months the fish can move up and down in the water column and so fishing zig rigs can be great for pinching a bite. On page 13 Darren Belton talks you through his approach for executing this effective method. There’s also a neat trick on page 14 that allows you to drop the lead when fishing helicopter style rigs. and from page 16 we are proud to present our new range of greys strata clothing – a layering system designed to keep you warm and alert right through the calendar year, essential practise to maximise your chances. HITTING THE

DISTANCE... LONG RANGE CASTING Whatever rod you use there are some essentials that will improve your distance casting 1- Make sure your feet are on a firm base, extend your arms and use your whole body to generate maximum tip speed.

ACADEMY KNOWLEDGE

// ED BETTERIDGE ON DISTANCE CASTING

2- The distance between the rod tip and the lead should be about 6 feet. Any less and you will lose distance. 3- Big pit reels correctly loaded with quality mono, combined with a shock leader, improve distance. 4- Balance the size of lead to the rod. Generally the stronger the rod, the larger the lead needed to compress it correctly.

Distance casting is a very important weapon in my armoury and I have certainly caught more than just a bonus fish or two because I have the technique and the kit to fish further than the average angler. On large pressured waters, especially in the spring, the fish will push into the middle of a lake to avoid lines and angling pressure, almost as if they know the point at which they are normally safe. But if you can cast a bait beyond that imaginary line then it can make a difference between hauling and blanking. Stoneacre in Oxfordshire was very much like that and I picked up more than my fair share of fish by casting further than most, or by accurate casting onto small gravel bars at long range.

and I always use a finger stall to protect my casting finger, this is very important when using braided leaders. I then lean back slightly and straighten both of my arms vertically to create a fulcrum this leaves the rod parallel to the ground with the lead just above it. I take a step forward and shift my body weight into the cast, at the same time I hit the rod hard with my arms by pulling the butt into my chest. Timing is very important, but that is something that everyone has to work out for themselves. After the cast I point the rod up at 45 degrees to allow the line to flow through the rings with minimal resistance as the line travels through the air in a similar arc to the lead.

USING THE RIGHT GEAR DISTANCE TECHNIQUE Technique and timing are very important in hitting the long range marks. For me it is all about using my whole body in the cast, not just my arms, to generate the required tip speed to propel the lead to the maximum distance. The technique I employ is to leave a drop from the tip to the lead of about 6 feet – somewhere between the spigot and the second eye. I tighten the clutch off completely to avoid it slipping

The equipment that I use is also very important and I opt for a 3.5lb test curve rod to give me the backbone I need to hit the lead. I am also a big believer in longer rods, so I favour a 13 foot rod over a 12 foot model. For me it’s all about generating the tip speed so that the rod tip is moving as fast as possible at the point of release, so it’s logical to me that a rod that is a foot longer will be travelling so much quicker at the tip because it moves in a bigger arc. The rods

A 43lb common banked from very close range on a small size 10 hook I am using at the moment are the Greys Aircurves and they are quite simply the best long range, all round rods I have ever used. What I mean by that is they will put a lead a very long way but they still retain a very good playing action. Gone are the days when a distance rod meant an unyielding broom handle. I have been using the prototype Aircurves for the last 12 months and I am also more than happy to use the 3.5lb for margin fishing without the fear of hook pulls, even with small hooks.

Casting a single hook bait a long way is a very good tactic, but quite often I want to fish to a feature or over bait, and that’s where the Greys Distance

Plus Marker and Spod rods are invaluable. I have them both kitted up with big pit reels loaded with thin braid and tough braided leaders. I can feature find at very long range and spod bait to around 150 yards, which although very tiring can reap some fantastic rewards! The tactic I employ for accurate fishing and baiting at range is to find the spot I want to fish and clip the marker rod up to the desired distance, I’ll then have a few more casts to make sure the lead is landing right on the money. Once I’m happy I wrap the line around two bank sticks set 12ft apart until I hit the clip, I make a note of the number of ‘wraps’ and then do the same number with my fishing rod so I know that I have the correct distance. It’s then just a case of casting in the same direction towards a mark (tree) on the far bank and I know once it hits the clip, at the correct intensity, the rig will land on the spot. I then do the same for the spod rod, but I adjust the clip slightly to allow for the drop of bait through the water. It’s a simple tactic and once the number of wraps has been noted then the spot can be fished on later sessions without the need for any marker work.

REELS, LINES, LEADS Big pit reels are also important, as is the right line choice. I am currently using a tapered main line that goes from 40lb at the tip down to 12lb in the centre. If I wasn’t using a tapered main line I’d certainly use some form of leader to absorb the pressure of the cast. Lead choice is also important; I like a tournament style lead in 4.5oz or more often 5oz. Some people think that is a bit too heavy, but I find it suits my casting style and gives me extra yards.

MODERN DAY CARPING IS ALMOST UNRECOGNISABLE FROM THE FISHING THAT MANY OF US KNEW AS YOUNGSTERS. TECHNIQUES AND TACTICS HAVE ADVANCED AS TECHNOLOGY HAS DEVELOPED, PARTICULARLY WITH REGARDS TO DISTANCE FISHING USING POWERFUL CASTING RODS. Big fish don’t get to be big by being stupid and we’ve all been on waters where the carp show at distances well beyond our usual reach. Of course many casting rods are great for aiming at the horizon and hitting huge distances, but their very nature means that all too often we experience hook pulls when playing fish close in. The holy grail of rods would enable you to fish comfortably at 150 yards plus, but without any fear of losing fish under the rod tip. This has, up until now, been almost impossible to find.

AIRCURVETM This rod has taken over three years to develop and is the first Greys rod to utilise our new TOREON® nano composite material technology. TOREON® composite engineering provides a uniform dispersion of nano particles throughout the resin that binds the carbon fibres together. This results in a stronger and lighter material but in no way restricts the action that can be achieved. Working alongside our team of angling consultants our composite engineers have developed what we believe to be the best carp rod on the market. • • • • • • • • •

// MATT EATON > CHODS > Why fishing chod rigs requires a different approach

8

The CHOD It's MORE THAN JUST A RIG Over the past few years the chod rig has become very popular indeed yet, despite this, I regularly meet anglers who have little or no confidence in it. Most who have tried fishing it, having experienced no success, have abandoned its use in favour of more familiar terminal set ups. From what I’ve witnessed it seems that many people are using the rig as they would any other. The chod rig is more than just a rig. It’s a complete way of fishing and therefore dictates its own use. To use it successfully we need to consider that it’s a departure from what we are used to doing, in exactly the same way as floater or zig fishing would be. There are several areas where I do things differently from the norm when chod fishing, and several pitfalls that I see other anglers fall into.

CHOD RIGS ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY POPULAR BUT THERE'S MUCH MORE TO FISHING THEM THAN JUST TYING THEM ON. GETTING THE BEST FROM CHODS REQUIRES A DIFFERENT APPROACH.

SPOTS

There is no need to lead around when fishing a chod rig. It is not even necessary to get a drop when casting out. The hook bait will often be six feet away from the lead so what the lead lands on is largely irrelevant. As long I can feel the lead fall some way through the water I know that it will be fishing effectively. Carp feed at all layers of the water column, particularly in weed, so fish the chod where the carp are.

CASTING Having made the cast it is important to ensure that the pop-up is up against the top bead of the set up. I achieve this by bringing the rod up to vertical as soon as the lead touches the surface and then following the lead’s decent with the rod tip. This allows the leader to flow through the rig’s ring swivel until it hits the top bead and the rig gently settles onto the weed. Although I don’t do a great deal of long range fishing I like to use a powerful rod for my chod fishing, mainly due to the weedy nature of the waters that I fish. The 12ft 3.5lb TC Isoflex models are what sit on my alarms as they have all the backbone required for the job of banking big fish.

Keep your rods high when fishing a slack line to help lift the line out of the weed, and cushion the hook-hold on a take

SLACK LINES

LEAD SIZE

With a standard rig it is fine to tighten up to the lead and then slacken off. This is not so when chod fishing. Tightening up can pull the hook into the weed where it will catch up and be buried out of sight of the carp. The line must remain slack from the moment the lead touches down to ensure the rig is presented effectively. Although this is not so easy in windy conditions I would rather have a bow in the line than a badly presented rig. I keep my rod tips high on the bank sticks ensuring that as soon as a fish moves off the line is lifted out of the weed rather than pulled down into it. This also allows the rod tip to both set and cushion the hook hold.

With such a short rig a large lead will lead to losses. Keep the lead size to a minimum. I use 1½oz for most of my chod fishing, which can be cast a fair way. I’ll only go above this if it is absolutely necessary. The streamlined distance shaped leads are less prone to catching up in weed so will help put more fish on the bank.

HOOK SIZE To work to its full potential the chod rig needs a large hook in comparison to the size of bait and, therefore, requires a very buoyant pop-up. I use a size 6 with a 14mm pop-up and a size 5 with a 16mm. It’s not worth compromising on the hook size.

BEAD POSITION

Take the rod up to vertical as soon as the lead touches the surface and then follow its decent

The Chod rig is best used with the bottom bead at least four inches from the end of the leader to prevent the hook point getting damaged by contact with the lead. The top bead should not be positioned too closely to the bottom bead. If the top bead is too low the whole lot will be dragged into the weed, and therefore it’s essential to discover the depth of the weed before deciding how high to place the top bead. It should be positioned around four to six inches from the top of the leader

allowing the rig to slide several feet between the beads. This ensures that your presentation will be perfect over almost any lake bed, plus I believe the free play leads to more efficient hooking. Although my hook length is a mere two and a quarter inches long, it is not uncommon to hook carp two inches back with this set up. Follow these simple tips when fishing the chod. Consider chod fishing as a method in its own right, give a little thought as to what you are trying to achieve, and you will fish more effectively and productively.

DARREN BELTON > try zig rigs in heavily stocked waters and get them in a feeding frenzy

ALL ACTION ZIG RIGS ZIG RIGS AREN'T JUST FOR BIG CARP IN LOW STOCKED WATERS, THEY CAN BE GREAT ON HEAVILY STOCKED WATERS. DARREN BELTON REVEALS HOW HE FISHES A TYPICAL WELL STOCKED DAY TICKET WATER.

A big fish caught on a zig rig. Adapt the method and it works on heavily stocked day-ticket waters too

"I GENERALLY FISH FOR BIG CARP USING THE ZIGS, BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN IT'S GREAT TO GO TO A RUNS WATER AND GET A BEND IN THE ROD" Zig rigs are a huge part of my angling and I use them all year round, probably more so in winter when the fish are more likely to be in the upper layers. I generally fish for big carp using the zigs, but every now and then its great to go to a runs water and get a bend in the rod, and although slightly different tactics are employed, this method can be just as effective. When using a zig for big carp I would generally fish a single bait, changing the depths regularly until the carp can be found. The area they are happiest at can wildly vary from day to day, and even hour to hour, so a good marker rod is invaluable, not just for feature finding but also for accurate depth measurements.

FISHING HEAVILY STOCKED WATERS The tactics change dramatically when fishing for smaller fish on a heavier stocked lake. The carp love to

Greys 2013 Pages 2-19.indd 12

A sloppy spod mix creates a good cloud feed heavily and the sound of a spod hitting the water is almost like a dinner gong being struck. In this situation a good spod rod is a must, as I like to spod a sloppy mix frequently over the top of my chosen hook bait.

CREATE A CLOUD I choose a sloppy mix with lots of small food items as I don’t want the bait to sink to the lakebed. I want to create a good cloud, with particles

of food suspended right through the water column. If you get this right the carp can literally be whipped into frenzy, and the action will be thick and fast.

USE SMALL HOOKBAITS A fine floating mono for a hook link and a smaller hook than you would normally use is the order of the day, as your hook bait needs to replicate the suspended

Making smaller baits from a pop-up using a boilie punch and combining it with a piece of cork (right) food particles. I use a 10mm punch and take out small pieces from my chosen pop ups, and this sits really well on a delicate set up. Choice of bait is entirely up to you, and many people find small pieces of coloured foam or cork to be just as effective. It is far more important to find the depth at which the fish are happy to feed, ensure your hook is in that zone, and spod consistently and accurately over the top of it.

RODS FOR THE JOB If you choose to try these methods on your local runs water it’s not just your fishing rods that are important. A good marker and spod are imperative, and I wouldn’t waste my time going without my Greys Marker and Spod Plus, they have never let me down. I have had many memorable sessions off the back of them.

PROBLEMS WITH HOOK PULLS WHEN USING CHOD RIGS AND BIG LEADS? RICHARD CHAPMAN THINKS HE HAS A SIMPLE ANSWER.

Chod rigs, although probably overused these days, can be hugely effective in the right situation. The biggest issue I’ve found, especially when using larger leads, is an abundance of strange hook pulls which can only be due to the lead banging around the fish. Early last year fellow academy member Ed Betteridge showed me the finer details of this lead drop-off system. I now use it religiously when I’m fishing chod rigs and pretty much land every fish I hook, even on barbless venues.

1 Cut off approx 10” of leadcore and remove the lead from inside. I actually use Downfall from Vardis, which doesn’t have a lead inner.

4 Next thread on a

lead and pop the end of the leadcore back through the eye of the swivel.

// RICHARD CHAPMAN > the advanced way to set up your chod rig for fewer hook pulls

PVA Drop-Off System

Greys 2013 Pages 2-19.indd 14

It’s well worth noting that with this system the force needed to drop the lead can be easily tailored by simply using different sizes of beads. Even with the biggest bore, because of the angle against the swivel, there is enough tension to keep the lead in place on the retrieve. That stops you losing a lead when simply winding in without a fish on. Other than the advantage of getting rid of large leads when fishing at range, I have now started using this system on weedy waters instead of using a lead clip system. It does exactly the same job.

2 Splice a loop in

3

both ends. You should aim to end up with a length approx 6 to 8 inches.

Thread one of the loops though the eye of your chosen swivel and thread the other end back through the loop. Pull it tight to secure.

5 Now it’s time to

6

thread on the bead that you want to use – the bigger the bore the easier it will eject.

Finally pop a PVA nugget through the exposed loop and pull everything tight.

7 The finished rig complete with bead and PVA nugget.

8 When the cast rig hits the water the

PVA will dissolve allowing the lead to eject on a fish or if stuck in weed.
