NORTHERN ENGLAND simply offers some Theof theNorthfinestof England walking on Planet Earth. Haweswater in the Lake District, by Tom Bailey.
Up here are soaring mountains, beguiling moorlands, vast limestone valleys and a massive line of cliffs so inviting that the Romans decided it should form the northern frontier of their empire. Here’s what it’s all about… The Yorkshire Dales, where the great stonewalled valleys of Swaledale, Wensleydale and Ribblesdale offer warm welcomes, magnificent ales and walking objectives as varied as the forgotten lake of Semer Water and the grand challenge of the Yorkshire Three Peaks. The North York Moors, where steam trains snake their way through almost unimaginable emptiness, whisking you to the fringe of jawdropping features such as the Hole of Horcum and Roseberry Topping. The Yorkshire Coast, where jet-laced cliffs support a 100-mile rollercoaster footpath that visits iconic sights such as the bustling Whitby harbour, the hidden gem of Robin Hood’s Bay and the fossil-packed promontory of Filey Brigg. The West Yorkshire moorlands, which inspired the Bronte Sisters as the backdrop for some of the world’s greatest literary fiction, giving us the windswept settings of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.
Walking Pages A5.indd 3
The Lake District, our most popular national park, which offers incredible adventures whether you’ve crossed its border a thousand times, or are making your first visit. Lakeland is just world class, from the muscular summits of Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Great Gable to the calmer, prettier slopes of hills like Loughrigg, Place Fell and the beginner’s favourite, Cat Bells. Not forgetting the much quieter Howgill Fells near Sedbergh, just across the M6 and full of alluring mystery for the discerning walker. The Pennines, known as the Backbone of England, a grand chain of hills stretching from the Peak District to the Scottish border via the delights of High Force, Cross Fell and “England’s Grand Canyon”, High Cup. And fi nally, Northumberland, perhaps the quietest of our national parks, where the lonely summits of the Cheviot Hills contrast beautifully with the cross-country escarpment known as the Whin Sill, topped by the greatest ancient monument in Britain: Hadrian’s Wall. Northern England? It’s a world in itself. And the people in the next few pages will help you make it your own.

SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL ENGLAND ountries across the globe would give their collective right arms for landscapes as dramatically different as those that are squeezed into the bottom half of England.
C
Look at the stirring, haunted tors of Dartmoor then consider the chalk cliffs of Sussex, or the vast wetlands of the Fens, or the limestone dales of the Peak District. How on earth are these in the same country, and at most 200 miles away from each other? For sheer variety, this end of the country is unbeatable when it comes to walking. There’s everything here, from short strolls along the canal towpaths of Warwickshire to multi-day expeditions across the mini-mountains of Shropshire or Derbyshire. Some of the richest coastlines in Britain are here, too: the plunging, rumpled granite of Cornwall’s north coast; the tearoom-dappled shoreline of Dorset; and the wildlife havens of Norfolk and Lincolnshire, where wading birds teem upon (and above) seemingly endless mudflats.
■ There are nine National Trails in this region,
more than you’ll find in any other:
■ The South West Coast Path, 630 miles of cliffs,
coves and sandy beaches
■ The Cotswold Way, wending its way through the
prettiest & most bountiful hills in the land
■ The Ridgeway, following the ancient footsteps of
■ ■ ■ ■
■ ■
■
Britain’s early traders and merchants from the Wiltshire wolds to the Chilterns The South Downs Way, tracing the lines of the finest chalk ridge in Europe The Thames Path, tracing the course of our noblest river from a hole in the ground to Tower Bridge The North Downs Way, following a bold and tree-lined scarp through the Garden of England The Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path, framing a single county beautifully from wooded heaths to silvery beaches And the first (and possibly most dramatic) stages of arguably the most famous of them all: the Pennine Way. Plus five national parks (Dartmoor, Exmoor, New Forest, South Downs, Norfolk Broads, Peak District) and countless Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. All this variety is just waiting for you to explore it and Walking Pages is your passport…

is eight thousand square miles of bliss: a walkers paradise, a mountaineer’s Wales dream and one of the friendliest regions in all of Britain. Whether it’s coastal wanders, rolling hill rambles or knee-weakening ridge scrambling, it’s an ideal place for the outdoors-minded to visit throughout the year. And, despite its modest size, there’s huge variety to its landscape to. Here’s a run-down of the various regions… Snowdonia Boasting the tallest mountains in the country, including mighty Snowdon (at 1085m the tallest peak in England and Wales), this is the destination of choice for hillwalkers, adventurers, scramblers and climbers. Situated in the heart of north Wales, it is revered as the country’s grandest region. Other peaks of note include the ridged, dinosaur-like Tryfan, the spiky and ever-popular Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr, and the much-loved and often walked Carneddau. If climbing challenging hills or wandering through valleys of spectacular beauty is your thing, then Snowdonia should be top of your list. Pembrokeshire Lying on Wales’ south-west coast, this area is home to the fantastic Pembrokeshire Coast Path, a 300km route that winds around the county and takes in some breath-taking scenery. Well-marked and well-supplied with accommodation and refreshments, it’s a demanding but very approachable challenge. If you’re feeling particularly fit, you could even attempt the recently opened 1400km Wales Coast Path, which covers the entire country!
Walking Pages A5.indd 4
Brecon Beacons Accessibly situated in the centre of south Wales, this rolling and rugged National Park is actually made up of four distinct regions. The easterly part consists of the ‘Black Mountains’ (plural) – a rolling land of bumpy, intricate hills – and is neighboured by the ‘Brecon Beacons’ section, containing the iconic peaks of Pen y Fan (886m) and Cribyn (795m). The western part, meanwhile, is made up of the waterfall-riven ‘Fforest Fawr’ and the spacious, seldom-trod expanses of the ‘Black Mountain’ (singular). Whichever you visit, you’ll find it a charming, appealing place. Clwydian Range Sitting in the north-east of the country, this hilly area is home to many ancient forts and cairns, and offers fantastic views across to neighbouring Snowdonia. It’s very easy to access from nearby Cheshire and England’s north-west cities too! If you’d like to discover this westerly gem for yourself, the following companies will be all too happy to oblige...

SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN IRELAND
or the outdoors lover, Scotland is like nowhere on earth. It is famously contradictory – FIsles, bleak, lush, flat, mountainous, both saturated with culture and the emptiest place in the and all within a day’s drive or a short boat hop.
For walkers, the choice is almost far too mind-boggling. Lovers of sharp, challenging mountains and crotchety weather, head for the North West Highlands and the Isle of Skye, where basing yourself in Mallaig, Kyle of Lochalsh or Portree will place you at the gateway to some of the UK’s most dramatic mountain ranges. If bagging Britain’s highest peak or walking the West Highland Way is your goal, the towns of Fort William, Kinlochleven, Tyndrum and Milngavie are perfect places to break the trip and enjoy a dram of fine highland whiskey before contemplating the frequently snowcapped summit of Ben Nevis (1344m) or the dramatic mountain sentinels of Glen Coe. For wilderness walking, dramatic mountain passes or a spot of skiing, Braemar and Aviemore offer unbeatable locations for accessing the Cairngorms National Park, where challenges can be found to assuage every level of walker at every time of the year, though beware the bone-cracking cold come winter! Over to the west is Scotland’s Second National Park, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs – where you can climb Ben Lomond, a ‘Munro’ which offers a perfect introduction to Scotland’s 283 3000ft peaks, amongst many more forest and mountain trails all amidst the stunning streak of water that is Loch Lomond. Head for Tyndrum or Crainlairich for ideal bases to explore this area. The Far North offers amazing light, stunningly photogenic landscapes and an electrifying air may feel more Scandinavian than British, but – as you’ll soon find out – is quintessentially Scottish. Ullapool provides an ideal basecamp for the strange and dramatic mountains of the Northern Highlands, the inlets and coastline of the northwest and the bleak moor of the northern coast.

The most accessible region of Scotland to those coming from England is the Southern Uplands, where its status as a Dark Sky Park hints at the wild and unspoilt nature of this landscape. Here, the Galloway Hills offer a magnificent slice of rugged moorland scenery accessible from the towns of Dalry and Newton Stewart while on the eastern side of the region, Melrose, Moffat and Hawick offer ways in to the beautiful rolling moorland of the border hills. From the highest point in the Southern Uplands – the mighty Merrick – you might, on a clear day, catch a glimpse of Northern Ireland. A rugged and unique area of Britain, Northern Ireland offers delights for the walker that can be found nowhere else. Take the immortal Giant’s Causeway, on the Northern tip – an easy day out from Ballycastle or Coleraine. Hereabouts you can also explore the Antrim Hills, and their Nine Glens which magnificently contour the Garron Plateau – one of the last wild places in Northern Ireland. Larne or the beautiful Ballycastle lie nearby for all your accommodation needs. An unmissable attraction in Northern Ireland are the famous Mourne Mountains. Accessible from Newry, these magnificent hills feature the unique Mourne Wall, originally built to house a reservoir catchment area, it’s a fine example of beautiful dry-stone walling and complements this magnificent mountain ridge beautifully. Packed with routes for all abilities, the Mourne Mountains are the perfect introduction to walking on the other side of the Irish Sea.
