SHAPE OF LOGIC CONFERENCE

BEHAVIOURAL NETWORKS WORKSHOP

1. 1. CONFERENCE AGENDA Everything can be automated. Our home, the city around it, the way we travel, the things we buy and the places we go. Our work, the designs we make, the decisions we take, our engineering and our art. Recent advancements in technology have proven to affect virtually every field of human activity. We are facing great changes and in our hands is the ability to make the world a better place. However the future poses us tough questions. To answer them we need experts from a wide variety of areas – architects, designers, urban planners, engineers, sociologists, philosophers, programmers and others. How can we design for the future to come? Can we avoid the dangers of modernity without rejection of technological progress? Which directions should we take to improve qualities of our space and environment? The goal of this year’s Shapes of Logic Conference is to facilitate a discussion on the subjects of architecture, design and urban planning in the context of global technological progress. The main areas of interest will be robotics, digital fabrication, computation and broadly understood automation. The goal of Shapes of Logic conference is to exchange opinions, knowledge and contacts Opinions on application and the role of modern technologies in design process and the future of the discipline known as parametric design, Knowledge concerning the use of technologies and methodology which will help to promote new ideas, Contacts enabling the designers and investors to find potential partners offering services which are unique for the Polish market.

LOCATION Museum of Architecture Bernardyska 5, Wrocław, Polska The host of the Shapes of Logic conference. Museum is located in the Gothic interiors of former Bernardine monastery from the fifteenth century, which consists of the church of st. Bernardine of Sienna and monastic quadrangle around patio. As one of the few preserved medieval buildings of this type in Silesia, it is one of the most valuable monuments in Wroclaw. In addition to numerous lectures and temporary exhibitions, the Museum of Architecture aims to provide a lively educational activities

1. 3. ORGANISERS Wrocław University of Technology and Faculty of Architecture Founded in 1945, Wrocław University of Technology is one of the largest and most renowned technical universities in Poland. We cooperate with universities, research institutions and companies in Poland and abroad. Faculty of Architecture is one of the best architectural schools in Poland. Our position has been confirmed in 2003 by the KAUT accreditation (Accreditation Commission of Universities of Technology) and in 2006 by the Polish Accreditation Committee granting accreditation with distinction for Architecture and Urban Planning specialization. Our students can be proud of numerous successes in architectural competitions at international level. LabDigiFab Laboratory of Digital Fabrication is an academic club active since 2010. We try to solve problems occurring during the architectural design process by applying parametric design, which is an interdisciplinary field. We started with parametric techniques, but our interest extended over time to generative and evolutionary design, video mapping, digital fabrication, interactive installations and objects, 3D printing. As part of our activities we conduct lectures, workshops, design groups and training. We actively promote digital fabrication technologies, in particular 3D printing. We regularly organize training courses of 3D printing covering the skills needed to operate Zmorph 3d printer. Thanks to our activity, 3d printer is now available for all students.

BEHAVIOURAL NETWORKS WORKSHOP

2. 1. WORKSHOP BRIEF In the context of global propagation of cities as a generic ‚copy and paste‘, the workshop will propose new models of infrastructural self-organisation, urban automation and mobility systems. Adaptive networks based on multi-agent principles and crowd simulation are used to solve complex architectural and programmatic conditions in a three-dimensional urban environment. We will explore towards an intelligent architecture, defined by flows of information and its materialization in speculative infrastructure and architectural scenarios. A responsive infrastructure that is deployable in multiple regions. Our design process will be driven by a direct feedback loop of different simulation software, each informing another as input for emerging connectivity networks and interrelated urban systems, driven by site specific urban and topographical parameters. The workshop aims to develop ideas of adaptive and evolutionary space-making beyond deterministic and finite solutions. In a series of algorithmic design exercises, different network principles and speeds, users behavior and needs are tested and evaluated, both by observation and parameter based criteria. Students will propose an architectural intervention in dense urban scenarios, that is both tested for optimised efficiency and stimulating in its embodiment.

2. 2. METHODOLOGY Students will be introduced to expertise in generative, algorithmic and parametric design approaches. Tutors and students will engage experimentally with computational simulation, analysis, design and production to query the design repercussions of these information-based technological methods for urbanism. During the workshop, students will develop design proposals responding to studio briefs using Processing with Rhino and Grasshopper. The final results of the workshop will be visualized using V-Ray for Rhino and the Adobe Suite.

Software requirements: Rhino 5.0 Grasshopper (Rhino plugin) Vray (Rhino plugin) Processing Adobe Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign)

Basic knowledge of Rhino and Adobe Suite is required. Advanced knowledge of Grasshopper and Processing is not mandatory.

2. 3. SCHEDULE The workshop will be covered in 4 days. The following schedule is a global overview of the workshop structure: DAY 01 Introduction lecture by the tutors followed with a tutorial on rhino/ grasshopper/ processing. The main focus will be on establishing the feedback loop between Rhino and processing. Processing will be used as a simulation tool. Various pre-made scripts will be given to the students to gain an understanding of potential applications. DAY 02 This day starts with a tutorial on Rhino/grasshopper. After the tutorial, the students will be given a site with a design brief. During the rest of the day the students will be experimenting with processing on the given site and developing their intervention strategy. DAY 03 This day starts with a tutorial on Rhino/grasshopper. The focus of the day is translating the numerical output of processing into architectural/ infrastructural forms with programmatic functions. Tutos will assist in developing a design proposal. DAY 04 The fourth day of the workshop will start with an introduction to presenttion techniques, including rendering and basic handling of the Adobe Suite for presentation (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator). The students will further develop their projects with the aid of the tutors. FINAL JURY At the end of the fourth day the students will all present their results in front of a public jury. The jury will include internationally renowned invited guest critics.

Matthijs la Roi, born in 1988 in the Netherlands is an MATTHIJS LA ROI experimental architect based in the United Kingdom. Matthijs La Roi Architects He studied architecture at the Delft University of Technology where he graduated Cum Laude. As architect, Matthijs la Roi has work experience from working at renowed international architecture and design firms such as Heatherwick Studio in London and the Laboratory for Visonary Architecture in Stuttgart. In his career he has worked on large and complex international projects with clients such as Google, Philips Frankfurt airport and IKEA. In 2016 Matthijs la Roi won the Belgian monument competition with his proposal ‘Museum of Hospitality’. The museum is scheduled to open in 2019. By using performative simulation tools, he aims to design buildings and environments that are more comprehensive informed compared to those designed by traditional design methodologies. Data informed architecture can also be interactive as he has shown with the interactive lightsculpture at the Philips lighting headquarters in Eindhoven and with the adaptive acoustic kinetic ceiling for the LAVA office in Stuttgart. With those techniques he tries to create environments that are more dynamic and adaptive to it’s user.
