The Business of

WHAT IS “The Best of. .” in the ARTS?

T

oday we often hear the phrase, “The Best of. .”! We see articles and advertisements about businesses and organizations that have been voted, “The Best of. .” We have “The Best of . .” for businesses in each of our cities; several Hampton Roads organizations present “The Best of. .” awards in many different categories. Many of our arts organizations have won the “The Best of..” awards-- Virginia Stage Company won the ArtStars award given by the Virginians For the Arts, indicating that they were one of “The Best of..” arts groups in our area. The Crispus Attucks Cultural Center won a national award from the National Endowment for the Arts because their RISE youth program was considered “The Best of. .” not only in our community, but nationwide! Many people in the Hampton Roads community have received “The Best of…” awards; Carlton Hardy, on the CAGHR Board, received the Legends Award this year-- he was considered the “Best of. .” because of his total devotion and service to our community and to the arts; VEER magazine presented the “People of the Year Award for 2012” to such people as Minette Cooper (CAGHR Board), and Tim Siebles, our local – now nationally known poet-- for their service and contributions to the arts and to our community. The Cultural Alliance gave out “The Best of. .” awards at its Alli Awards program. Ten individuals and businesses that volunteer, serve, and support arts organizations were considered “The Best of. .” in our Hampton Roads area.

What standards or guidelines should arts and culture organizations use when evaluating the “Best of. .”? One of the first ways to start is by analyzing the mission statement-is the organization fulfilling its mission to the community and its constituents? Review the Strategic Plan! Is the organization on track with what it should be doing and

accomplishing its stated goals? Prepare a financial analysis-what does the bottom line like? Is the organization constantly in the “red” or more favorably in the” black”! Evaluate new strategies and steps instituted in the past two years to make the organization a stronger and more responsive organization whose services and programs will be around for the next generation? Additionally, examine the programs and services offered. What do audience evaluations show about the organization’s programs and services? Is your organization fulfilling the needs of all audience groups? What opportunities are provided to your audiences to provide input into your organization-- to offer their ideas and suggestions? Examine the leadership of your organization – the Board, the CEO, and others who lead various aspects of your organization and its programs? Is it fully staffed and strong? Are the right people on the “bus”? When the community is asked to vote, what will their vote say about your organization and its accomplishments? Businesses and Fortune 500 companies strive to attain prestigious, national Excellence Awards. As arts and cultural groups, our goal should be to constantly strive to attain that prestigious, excellence award -- “The Best of. .”

THE BEST OF HAMPTON ROADS We’ve probably all had the experience of a distant relative pinching our cheek or patting our head as a child and remarking about how much we’ve grown since they’ve last seen us. It seemed silly to us – after all, we felt the same as before, and we hadn’t noticed any sudden growth spurts. Thus, it has been with the transformation of the Hampton Roads cultural arts scene for those of us who have lived here for some time. Gradually and quietly, but surely, Hampton Roads has become one of the premiere centers for cultural arts in the country. Over the past two decades or so, the arts has reinvented the region, as virtually every city and county has seen the opening of performance venues, museums, galleries or arts centers. There are more than 300 arts organizations in Hampton Roads. With performance halls in Newport News, Hampton, Suffolk, Norfolk and Portsmouth , Virginia Beach and on the outskirts in Charles City, the historic Palace Theatre is making a name for itself in addition to the Sandler Center for the Arts, The American Theatre in Hampton and Ferguson Center for the Arts in Newport News, to the historic Attucks Theatre and Jewish Museum & Cultural Center, to the repurposed Suffolk Performing Arts Center and Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center in downtown Newport News, we are privileged to enjoy a wealth of beautiful venues where we can go to experience music, plays, dance and more– Hampton Roads has more live performance theatres per capita than any market in the country. Economic impact – to the tune of a half-billion dollars – includes not only ticket sales, but also restaurants, specialty shops, lodging and other tourism activity. Studies show that the money local government spends on the arts is more than repaid, and it multiplies as it ripples through the economy. It’s clearly a win-win for everyone. There is no definitive meaning for art; it is subjective, and it fills our lives everywhere. As Tolstoy says, “We are accustomed to understand art to be only what we hear and see in theatres, concerts and exhibitions, together with buildings, statues, poems, novels . . . But all this is but the smallest part of the art by which we communicate with each other in life. All human life is filled with works of art of every kind – from cradlesong, jest, mimicry, the ornamentation of houses, dress and utensils, up to church services, buildings, movements and triumphal processions. It is all artistic activity.” Some of us are compelled to express art on canvas, others with pen (or computer) to paper, others on stage. Some are schooled in their art, others are self-taught; but the art literally bursts forth from them, honestly but “primitively,” in a form we call folk art. Just imagine if we embraced our call to express the art inside us, without selfconsciousness, judgment or fear – what we could do! Perhaps that expression would take the form of making paintings or poems, but it’s just as likely that we might learn to play the piccolo, take up bonsai or make a really great crème Brule. Whatever your definition of art, we hope you enjoy this issue of Hampton Roads Bravo And while you’re deciding how you will express the art inside yourself, choose a few performances, and go experience someone else’s art.
