WHO ARE THE INNOVATORS?

Design Exhibition from the Kohl’s Design It! Lab 2014 Application • THE SHOW Who are the Innovators? is an exhibition for emerging designers presented by the Kohl’s Design It! Lab. It will be held at Discovery World on April 25 and 26, 2014. This show is an opportunity for the Kohl’s Design It! Lab to showcase our community of talented makers, creative thinkers, and passionate innovators. This includes our Design Educators, Design Futurists interns, and the Kohl’s Design It! Club Members. The jury will accept 22 individuals or teams who have been involved in the Kohl’s Design It! Lab. Selected participants will exhibit their design work as well as have an interactive component for the public, such as demonstrations, experiments, or collaborative installations. There will be four awards, including the Best in Innovative Design, which will be voted on by the public. SHOW DATES April 25-26, 2014 LOCATION Discovery World 500 N Harbor Drive Milwaukee, WI 53202

• ELIGIBILITY The show is open to all designers involved in the Kohl’s Design It! Lab during the school year of 2014-2015. This represents the staff, Design Futurists interns, and the Kohl’s Design It! Club Members.

• RULES AND REGULATIONS Work submitted must have been made within the last 3 years. The work does not have to be something made at Discovery World, however, connection to the center will strengthen the application. Applicants may submit their proposals individually or as a team. Work/presentations must fit within a 12.5’ x 8’ space. 6’x3’ foldable tables will be provided for each section. All other display props, such as display walls, pedestals, shelves, etc., must be provided for each section. If you intend to use media equipment, such as laptops, screens, or projectors, the Kohl’s Design It! Lab will do its best to accommodate your needs but cannot guarantee all equipment will be available. The Kohl’s Design It! Lab at Discovery World is not responsible for damages or lost work.


• APPLICATION MATERIALS Application must include: • 3-5 IMAGES OF YOUR WORK • A PROPOSAL STATEMENT • A BIOGRAPHY

IMAGES Images must be jpeg files at 300 dpi and approximately 4”x6”. These images should be of the work that you are going to exhibit. If they are not, they must be related somehow to what will be exhibited. Follow this example to title each image file: LASTNAMEfirstname_TitleofProduct_Year

STATEMENT Explain your intention for the exhibition. Statements should be no more than 300 words. Answer these following questions: • • • • • •

What is your product or design work? How is this product or design meant to be experienced? How is it innovative? How was it made (materials and methods)? How can you demonstrate this process to the public in approximately 5-10 minutes? How can this process be demonstrated when you are not present?

Save the statement as a PDF file with the following order: LASTNAMEfirstname_NameofProduct_Year

BIOGRAPHY Applicant must also provide a biography with a maximum of 250 words. Begin biography with a title for yourself. Be creative and intriguing! Examples from the past have been: Interspecies Interpreter, Cloud Engineer, Cultural Chemist, or Robot Psychologist. Describe your vision for that title and how you fulfill it. Save the biography as a PDF file with the following order: LASTNAMEfirstname_Biography_Year

• SUBMITTING APPLICATIONS Include jpeg images and PDF documents in a CD or Flash drive for mailed applications or a ZIP file for emailed applications. Applications will not be returned in the mail. Applications must arrive no later than 11:59pm on March 10. Any application received after March 10 will not be accepted. • ACCEPTANCE Email notification will be sent no later than March 17, 2014. The top 22 applications will be accepted.
