Architecture Architecture Portfolio2016 Portfolio2016 PAULINAKONKINA

Personal Profile I am an energetic and hard-working student who is inspired by architecture, and in particular, environmentally conscious. The way in which buildings can affect the environment and quality of life is especially impotent to me. I am searching to reflect this interest in my professional experience.

Children and Young Adults Library 01 year place

winter 2016 Dublin, Ireland

The latest individual project was situated in Dublin, Ireland. Upon spending a week analysing and carefully studying the site, we were asked to design a children and young adults library with two additional programmes, music and intercultural hub. One of the things that has significantly distinguished the south and north part of Dublin for me was a lack of light. The further away you were from the centre, the less light there would be. I also noticed that would be one of the main reasons I would not feel safe. Mountjoy Square is a large opened space which is very badly lit. Following the ideas of urban acupuncture, I thought that creating a library that could glow and light the neighbourhood area would make the area feel safer.

Experimental Theatre 02 year place

autumn 2015 London, UK

A collaborative project with civil engineers was to redesign an abandoned underground station nto an experimental theatre. The underground station has three shafts connecting the surface to the tunnels below. We found it a pity that two of these important shafts were covered over and so our first intention was to extrude these shaft outline through the building in different ways. To us, the london underground is like a fantastic, huge ‘machine’ and so it was also our intention to bring machinery and movement to our building to celebrate this aspect of it’s history.

Medical Centre 03 year place

winter 2015 Bath, UK

Brief for the project was to design a midsize surgery situated on campus. Contextual factors and well-being of patients were of particular importance. Consequently, I analysed the site in detail, linking these observations to inform my design decisions.

Village Hall 04 year place

autumn 2014 Bath, UK

A shorter second year project had a similar contextual approach. The building requires clarity of planning and a functional design in both plan and structure. The heart of any community are the spaces or buildings that facilitate interaction. Without these any sense of community is lost or is unlikely to develop.

IMAGINE BATH | competition entry 05 year place

winter 2015 Bath, UK

Bath attracts tourists and older residents because of its historic sites and beautiful centre, and students because of its universities. However, to establish itself as an inventive, entrepreneurial and competitive 21st Century city it has to attract young professional talent. While a green, walkable and congestion-free bath, as envisioned by the council’s 2029 master plan, is a necessary step for young professionals to consider the city, measures should be taken to actively attract them. With this in mind, ‘Ripple District’ leverages on one of Bath’s biggest assets: its existing creative community. Bath is one of the UK’s top 10 creative clusters but this dem graphic is severely under-represented. ‘Ripple District’ aims to create a marketable image for young professionals by concentrating the existing (scattered) creative businesses into a micro-district characterised by a unique and fashionable architectural aesthetic. This is done in a sustainable way by renovating a disused industrial complex through a style conscious of the city’s past industrial success. Metaphorically, the proposal will create a self-feeding ‘ripple effect’ as attracting talent around the micro-district will attract businesses and more talent in turn.

URBAN INSTALL | summer project 06 year place

summer 2014 Budva, Montenegro

The brief aim is to design a site-specific pavilion that reflects the dynamic nature of a site. The chosen space is situated in a woodland part in Budva, a popular seafront town in Montenegro. The vivid greenery and stone beaches create an unaffected and native environment. Budva also houses a large port, with fishing and private boats. As there is no distinct tourist centre, the city council has announced a competition for a tourist info box, also to promote the use of local materials.

Brick House 07 year place

spring 2014 Bath, UK

Out of all my first year projects, I believe, domestic work to be the most successful. The brief required a masonry house for a professional couple with included live-work spaces. As one of the couples was to be an artist, I drew my own inspiration from the work of Giorgio Morandi. These beautifully composed still life paintings inspired me to create a series of volumes, with light shining into a space. The skylights provide a good lighting, and make rooms brighter and more exciting. The shapes differ in height, depending on a purpose of a building.

PART I PROFESSIONAL PLACEMENT | at JM Architects 09 year place

spring - autumn 2015 Edinburgh, UK

I have been employed as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant in JM Architects. My first work experience in a practice has proved to be extremely useful and fulfilling, and created a positive link between what we are taught in university and the practical experience in the firm. Its portfolio include a variety of projects such as health care, schools and residential developments. Points of Presence Framework for Royal Bank of Scotland is responsible for the major refurbishment of many branches across the country, such as NatWest Margate, NatWest Bolton or NatWest Wigan. The Royal Bank of Scotland team proved to be very busy; I learned that efficient working practices and organisational skills are key to managing multiple projects with tight deadlines. Our team was also responsible for putting together developed design proposals, that included reflected ceiling plans, finishes drawings and door and component schedules. One of the most challenging and exciting parts of my placement was to complete a site survey for a small scale branch in Central London. I reviewed the scope of works on site together with a contractor, following a meeting with a representative of a client and a branch manager where we discussed our proposal. As a part of the health care team, I was mostly working at the development and technical design of the projects. One of my most common tasks was to create drawings showing furniture layouts for the key rooms using Revit and Architectural Data Base (bespoke healthcare software provided by NHS to show requirements for every room type). I was also responsible for reviewing the Mechanical and Electrical Engineers proposals, and coordinating electrical services design with the architectural drawings.
