Architecture Portfolio2014 PAULINAKONKINA
PERSONAL PROFILE I am an energetic and hard-working student who is inspired by architecture, and in particular, environmentally conscious. The way in which buildings can affect environment and quality of life, is especially impotent to me. I am searching to reflect this interest in my professional experience. Although I have no formal architectural experience I am confident that I will work well in practice. I am eager to learn new skills to contribute to a variety of projects during my placement.

INTERESTS ARCHITECTURE
I contribute to a newly founded departmental magazine, ‘Paperspace’, at the University of Bath. Writing allows me to understand architectural concepts in a greater depth. I also act a Peer Mentor.
ACTING AND MUSIC
I play the harp and piano. I received the Gold Medal LAMDA Duel Acting award, practicing my skills as a part of the theatre and backstage crew in school.
KEY SKILLS I am proficient with a range of computer programmes including AutoCAD, InDesign CC, Photoshop CC and SketchUp; hand drawing and photography. With these I can achieve a range of visual effects of a high standard. I believe I work equally well as part of a team and independently, through group and individual projects undertaken at the university. My linguistic ability allows me to communicate and present my ideas in a clear and organised manner. I am fluent in Russian and English and in the process of learning German and Italian. I am very hardworking and always look for ways to improve my skills.
RELEVANT WORK EXPERIENCE VOLUNTEERING I have volunteered at the architectural festival, called ‘Archstoyanie Festival’ in Nikola-Lenivets, Russia. This is a place where many amateur and wellestablished artists, designers and (landscape) architects could present their ideas and theories; take part in exhibitions and competitions and promote sustainable architecture. I was part of a team that assisted in organising a competitions that promoted nature as a source of architectural inspiration. I have also explored the sustainability and properties of timber. This allowed me to exercise creativity under pressure and to work effectively as part of a team. I produced photography for festival advertising campaigns, some of which could be seen at ’Archstoyanie Festival’ website. From this, I learned the importance of composition and contrast when creating an image. EXHIBITIONS Last summer I assisted at the international landscape architecture exhibitions ‘Gardens and People’ and ‘Moscow Flower Show 2014’ in Moscow. I was responsible for several projects, in addition to advertising. This involved supervising the construction process in the absence of designers. It was fascinating to observe the interaction of nature and art, in the context of architecture. This experience influenced my affinity for environmental design.

MEDICAL CENTRE Brief for my most recent project was to design midsize surgery situated on campus. Contextual factors and well-being of patients were of particular importance. Consequently, I analysed the site in detail, linking these observations to inform my design decisions.
2.
1. Black pen sketch, analysing architectural styles around the site and the scale compared to a human body. 2. Watercolour sketch, showing the main entrance to the medical centre. 3. North section cut through the waiting spaces, reception and exterior contemplative space. 4. North elevation, showing relationship between materials, concrete and timber. 5. Internal visual of a corridor, leading into consultancy rooms. 6. External visual looking towards the main entrance.

VILLAGE HALL A shorter second year project had a similar contextual approach. The building requires clarity of planning and a functional design in both plan and structure.
1. Series of black pen sketches of the area. 2. Plan showing clarity of spaces created. 3. North section cut through the community hall and storage spaces, showing relationship of light. 4. External visual exploring the hierarchy of volumes and rhythm from park area. 5. External visual showing the main entrance.

FIRST YEAR WORK
2.
I have undertaken several steel and timber frame pavilion and installation projects. Out of all my first year projects, I believe, domestic work to be the most successful. The brief required a masonry house for a professional couple with included live-work spaces. I chose industrial red brick to massing of forms with a series of open plan spaces. As one of the couples was to be an artist, I drew inspiration from my own passion of painting.
3.
1. Oil painting onto the concrete slab with metal plates and objects embedded into it, portraying the 2. Carmo Convent in Lisbon, Portugal. Watercolour painting of a beach in Cicino, Italy. 3. Series of 1:100 models showing different volumes of a brick house.
