Dear St. Paul,

The Hero God Needs You to Be

Thank you for showing us true bravery. You are a true hero. You showed us that it takes true courage to say sorry when we make mistakes and to change our attitudes so we are more like Jesus. You were brave because you always wanted Jesus to teach you how to think, act, and speak. You were brave because you treated everyone with truth and love. Help me to be like you because you tried to be like Jesus. Amen.

The virtues are the ways we follow Jesus and live true, happy lives.

By Julia Harrell, author of How to Be a Hero: Train with the Saints

Have you ever thought, “If I’d been alive then…” when you studied a particular time in history? Maybe you imagined yourself running a stop on the Underground Railroad, helping slaves escape to freedom. Or maybe you saw yourself taking part in the resistance movement during World War II. It’s exciting to envision ourselves doing heroic things! Sometimes we don’t notice the opportunities to be a hero that are right in front of us. In every place and every time, God needs heroes who will show his love and goodness to the world. You’re in exactly the right spot to be a hero for God. The saints are heroes for God, and their superpowers are the virtues. The virtues can be your superpower, too. You may be thinking, “But God hasn’t asked me to be the foster father of Jesus, like St. Joseph,” or, “The Blessed Mother has never appeared to me, like she did to St. Bernadette,” or even, “God hasn’t called me to sail to another country to spread the Gospel, like he asked St. Patrick.” And that’s true! But God has given you a mission of your own. And when you accept that mission, you can be a hero. You know the kid in your class who everybody makes fun of, or just ignores? Or your cousin who doesn’t believe in God? They need a hero…like you! When you grow in virtues like faith, hope, and love, you can be exactly the hero your classmate and cousin need. The saints are fantastic coaches for us in our mission to be heroes for God. Every one of the saints lived in a specific time and place, and became a

hero for God in their unique place in history. Their example can show us how we can become heroes in our own lives, and how to respond to the people and situations we encounter every day. In my book, How to Be a Hero: Train with the Saints, we travel alongside 14 incredible saints from every walk of life whose examples are inspiring and enlightening. They teach us how many kinds of heroes there are, and how many different ways God asks us to work with him. Ask God to show you what your mission is and to equip you with the tools you need to carry it out. He will! He’ll show you the places he needs you to go and the people he needs you to be a hero for. God will also help you grow in the virtues you need for your mission. The word virtue means power or strength, and the virtues are the power of God working in your life. Ask the saints to pray for you and accompany you on your mission. They will! They’ll pray for you, cheer you on, and give you an example of what it means to live a virtuous life—a life filled with God’s power. If you became the hero God is asking you to be, how would the world look different? Whose life would be better if you were the hero you’ve been created to be?

David and Goliath 1 Samuel 16–17 God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to a man

One by one, seven of Jesse’s sons were introduced to Samuel. But each time, Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one.” Then he found out that the youngest son, David, was out watching the sheep. Samuel sent for David. When he came in, the Lord told Samuel, “This is the one!” So, Samuel poured oil on David’s head to show that he was the one that God had chosen. Meanwhile, King Saul was sad and upset because the Lord’s spirit had left him. He asked his servants to find someone who could play the harp to calm him. One of his servants told him about David, who played the harp and was also a good soldier. So, Saul sent for David. At that time Israel was at war against the Philistines. One of the Philistine soldiers, Goliath, came forward and shouted, “Choose one of your men to fight me! If he kills me, we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, then you must be our slaves!” And he insulted the army of Israel. Saul and his army were terrified, because Goliath was about eight or nine feet tall! He wore a bronze helmet and armor and held a huge sword in his hand. No one wanted to fight him!

named Jesse. One of Jesse’s sons would take Saul’s place as king. Samuel saw Jesse’s son Eliab. He was handsome and tall. Samuel thought, This must be the new king. But God told Samuel, “I have not chosen him. You judge a person by his looks, but I see into the heart.”

Discussion Questions:

But David begged Saul, “Let me fight that Philistine!” Saul said, “No. You’re too young.” David replied, “If I could kill lions and bears when I was watching my sheep, I can surely kill this Philistine who is insulting the Lord’s army!” So, Saul answered, “Go on, then! The Lord is with you!” When Goliath saw David, who was just a boy, coming out to meet him, he laughed at him and called him names. David shouted back, “You fight with your sword and spear, but I fight in the name of the God of Israel!” The two moved toward each other. David quickly loaded his slingshot and shot a stone at Goliath. The stone hit him in the forehead and he fell to the ground. David ran to take Goliath’s sword and cut off his head. The rest of the Philistine army turned and ran away in fear. After this, David was put in charge of Saul’s army. everyone was shouting praises for David, singing songs about what a great soldier he was! And Saul became angry and jealous when he realized that everyone liked David better.

Have you and your friends ever judged a person by what they looked like? Describe a time you did. What did you learn about the person after you got to know them? How did David beat Goliath even though Goliath was bigger and stronger? Have you ever been scared to do something, but brave enough to do it anyway? What did you learn from that experience?

Ordinary Kids—Extraordinary Mission! By Sister Marlyn Evangelina Monge, FSP author of Mary and the Little Shepherds of Fatima

Matthew 5:14–16 Follow the arrows to discover this Bible passage. Then read the rest of what Jesus tells his disciples and us in Matthew 5:14-16.

Imagine inspiring millions of people to work and

pray for peace in the world—and not just one day when you’re all grown up, but right now!

You might think, I’m just a kid! That’s impossible! You may think that no one will listen to you or that you have nothing you can teach someone else, especially someone older. But when you share the light of God’s love with others, what you do can become something that changes people for the better.

Saints of the Americas Word Search This puzzle has the first and last names of some of the Saints of the Americas, though both may be separated. There are no diagonals and no backward answers.

That is exactly what happened 100 years ago in Fatima, Portugal. In many ways ten-year-old Lucia and her two cousins—eight-year-old Francisco and his seven-year-old sister Jacinta—were kids just like you. They had lots of chores to do. And they liked to play whenever they got a chance, even while they were supposed to be caring for their families’ sheep. They were ordinary kids who experienced something extraordinary. One day, Mary, the mother of Jesus, appeared to them! The story of Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta is special not only because our Blessed Mother appeared to them. Their story is also special because it shows us that regardless of our age, the Blessed Mother loves us and watches over us, and that God can do great things through us!

In Mary and the Little Shepherds of Fatima, you’ll discover just how much God loves the world and wants to save it. You’ll discover that our prayers and little sacrifices add up to make a big difference in the world! And most importantly, you’ll see that with God nothing is impossible and that three children can be the ones chosen to be the messengers of his grace and love. You don’t have to wait until Mary appears to you to be God’s messenger. And you certainly don’t need to be older to share God’s love with others. You can start now. Ultimately, that is the message of Fatima for us today. We are all called to pray for and bring the news of God’s love and forgiveness to the world. How is God asking you to be his messenger today?

Sister Marlyn Evangelina Monge has been a Daughter of St. Paul since 2005. She is the author of four books and serves as editor for books for children and teens at Pauline Books & Media. Before entering the convent, Sister Marlyn taught bilingual kindergarten for six years and in her parish’s religious education program, and she volunteered with the youth ministry program. Sister Marlyn is a proud tía (aunt) to her six nieces and nephews.
