W hat I s the R osary? When Mary and her Son, Jesus, lived on earth, people sometimes asked Mary for Jesus’ help. Mary is our Mother in heaven. We can also ask her for Jesus’ help. One way to do this is by praying the Rosary. The Rosary is a special prayer. It helps us think about important times in the lives of Jesus and Mary. We remember times when they were happy. We remember times when they were sad. We call these different times the mysteries of the Rosary. There are four sets of mysteries. Praying the joyful mysteries helps us to say “yes” to God as Mary always did. When we pray the mysteries of light, we think about events that happened after Jesus grew up and began to teach about God, his Father. Praying the sorrowful mysteries reminds us that Jesus, the Son of God, loves us so much that he was willing to suffer and die to save us from our sins. Praying the glorious mysteries reminds us that God wants us all to be happy with him someday in heaven. While we think about what happened in the lives of Jesus and Mary, we pray the prayers that you may already know: the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the Glory. We say these prayers on a special chain of beads called rosary beads.

In the Our Father, we pray to God our Father using the words Jesus taught us. In the Hail Mary, we ask Mary to pray for us. In the Glory, we praise God the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Before you start your Rosary, tell Jesus and Mary about the people you want to pray for. Talk to them about the needs or problems you have. Thank them for all they do for you. This book gives you one or two short sentences to read before each Hail Mary. Each of these sentences tells a part of the story of Jesus and Mary. Most of the sentences are based on what we read in the Bible or Holy Scripture. That’s why this way of praying the Rosary is called a scriptural Rosary.

The P rayers of the R osary The Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. After the Glory at the end of each decade of the Rosary, say this prayer, which Mary taught the children when she appeared to them at Fatima:
Oh my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.

Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. We pray the joyful mysteries of the Rosary on Mondays and Saturdays. We pray the mysteries of light on Thursdays. We pray the sorrowful mysteries on Tuesdays and Fridays. And we pray the glorious mysteries on Wednesdays and Sundays.
