Theresa Paulin These drawings are an exploration in spatial relationships of Aalto’s Saynatsalo Town Hall. The axon and section above demonstrates the initial volume while the generative drawing on the right is an experimental model/drawing that started with an axon of the circulation space outside the main courtroom.
Drawing
Theresa Paulin These fragments are an early exploration of cladding and construction details for a wellness center sited adjacent to the Williams and Tsein Natatorium on the Cranbrook Academy Campus. This double skinned facade serves as a circulation corridor as well as an additional thermal barrier. Construction is envisioned as a reclamation of wood fragments to provide additional structural support as well as shading and privacy to the interior atrium. By exploiting the irregular nature of these “found materials, an element of dematerialization is given to the facade. This effect is then carried into the interior of the building as dematerialization occurs in movement from wood to shadows cast upon the translucent glass and eventually irregular shifting patterns in the most interior space.
Expression in Detail
Theresa Paulin These artifacts have been created in exploration of various mediums. Traditional metal smithing is combined with glass and cloth to yield unpredictable forms and patterns. Centered is the mesh of metal and glass. Here various enamel have been layered using each layers unique expansion rate to create uncontrolled crackling in surface patters. The final piece expand and contracts to alter patterning of the cloth within. Effort here has been applied to emphasize asymmetrical expansion and fluidity.

Each of the 2 existing “shot-gun” houses (a 2 story and a 1 story) were split, pulled and bridged to create 3 separate residences, 2 private courtyards, 3 live/work spaces, & a new community between the forms. This architectural response maintains both public & private while engaging both the front & back facades to meet the public.
