Introduction Architecture The design of a Truckplaza with a capacity to park 400 trucks, with a possibility to expand to 800 trucks. Within the building of the Truckplaza there has to be room for: - hotel - restaurant - truckservice / truckwash - shops - offices Urbanplanning / Landscape To make a strategic plan for the development of Maasvlakte I + II, so it can become a PortCity PIONEER. Within this development the Truckplaza has to fit within the proposals of the structures.

TRUCKPLAZA
Statement
TRUCK Rest after a hard day at work is important for every one, also for truckdrivers. Heavy traffic, and still deliver your products in time is a stressfull business. A nice place to rest after a stressfull day is important. A place where they can eat a good meal, chat with friends and colleagues and get a good night of sleep, to escape form the hectics from the harbour.

Two locations for the development of a truckplaza. The location on the north is surrounded with noise from trains, roads and distripark. The location on the soutch is only on one side exposed with sound from the A15. Because a restfull environment for the truckers is needed. Location two is better suited for this need.
The truckplaza is connected to the main infrastructure by making an extension on the planed fly-over. Using the height difference between the fly-over and the extension, limited resources have to be used to make this connection.

Parking 400 trucks
To minimize the impact on the surrounding the parking is designed like a machine.

Building
The building is situated in the middle to make a division between the gaurded (west) and unguarded (east) parking. Also by possitioning the building in the middle both parkings share the same facilities and walking distances are reduced.
Visibility from A15
Because the truckplaza is situated behing a “natural� soundbarrier it is not visible from the A15. By creating an tower the building becomes visible, and it also can be seen as a landmark.
Expantion truckplaza to 800 trucks
With the expansion of Maasvlakte II there will be needs for more parkingfacilities. Room for the building and the parking to double in size is possible with an expansion towards the south.

Structures
Three structures From the inlands 3 different structures expand towards the sea. A “hardcore� industry structure, a infrastructural life line and a green structure. The infrastructural life line is the division between the hardcore industry and the green structure. This green structure we want to continue untill the beach, but when you look at the masterplan of Maasvlakte II a distripark is situated on this spot. Therefor the distripark has to be replaced to another location.

Statement
BEACH Beach plus By creating an end on the green structure there must be an really strong end point. This end point is made by a big natural beach where all kind of activities can take place, like kitesurfing, windsurfing, hanggliden and all kind of activities in the dunes. The beach plus aera is going to be the new beach of Rotterdam, where all the people from the city can relax during there spare time. Also a lot of tourists are expected because it is a special point where harbour and nature meet, so it has a lot of special places you can go.

Projecttext PortCity PIONEER Pioneers are the first to enter unknown territory. They need to find their way without the help and guidance of others. The Maasvlakte 2 (MV2) is such a territory which has us, the architects and urban planners, as its pioneers. MV2 after all does not yet exist. It is still only North Sea. Designing for an area that is not actually there carries with it its own particular problems. There are no pre-existing structures to inspire us. It is nevertheless also a challenge – to create something out of nothing, even if it remains only a figment of our imagination. Unable to draw on the experiences of others, imagination is indeed all that is available to us. Pioneers, indeed. Maasvlakte 1 + 2 The construction of MV2 started in 2008. The ten years of planning the preceded it needed to be readjusted in light of the economic crisis and the only lukewarm interest expressed by companies in the project. This led to a new strategy, which saw parts of the original plan developed along different lines. The biggest change has been the cancellation of the second Distripark. Reason for this is the reluctance of companies to relocate to MV2. Only 30% of the first Distripark is currently in use. If this trend continues the first park will only be fully occupied by 2040. Rather than starting afresh we have opted to readjust the existing plan to meet these new challenges. The foundation of this plan is the landscape concept developed by H+N+S architects, which has infrastructure as a boundary dividing nature (to the south) and industry (to the north). This allows for the extension of nature from inland to MV2 and ends with a recreational beach. By creating an inlet the beach doubles in length, allowing it to be used for different and more recreational activities at the same time. Adjacent to the beach are four large parking machines which accommodate some 400 cars each. Among the amenities available are a hotel and a number of beach pavilions. Meanwhile on the industry side of the project, the shore will be developed as a proper industrial port lined with modern wind turbines that fit in with the aspirations of the port authority. On the long run the Distripark will reach saturation point. The making of available of additional land, however, would impede durable development. By creating scarcity companies are forced to use their limited space optimally, through the construction of taller buildings for example. Policy guidelines could also be employed to encourage a higher building density (guidelines could demand a minimum percentage of the plot be occupied, a minimum height for the buildings involved, etc.) In the long term this increased density will create sufficient demand to attract new facilities to the area, such as conve

nient stores, bars, restaurants and hotels. Truck plaza As the risk of robbery increases for truck drivers, new government regulation – in the interest of road safety – insists on strict observance of regular rest for drivers. This creates strong demand for a secured parking space for trucks. With hundred of trucks passing through MV1 and MV2 on a daily basis there is an urgent need for such a ‘truck plaza’ here. Because the primary purpose of such a plaza is rest we have chosen to position it on the south (nature) side of the main throughway. The landscape serves to shield the area from noise and poses a buffer against possible theft or robbery. This means gates are not required and drivers, imprisoned in their trucks for many long hours already, won’t have to experience enclosure outside their vehicles. The area must represent peace and quiet and the truck plaza allows drivers to take in – and venture out into – the natural surroundings. The plaza consists of two large parking spaces separated by a long-shaped building. The central, equidistant location of the building means the amenities are within easy reach of all drivers. It is placed perpendicular to the throughway to facilitate further extension of the parking spaces later on. The building contains a number of shops, a restaurant, and offices. Various patios connect the two parking spaces. These serve as entry points into the building and may serve as meeting grounds. The restaurant is located above the entrance to the plaza allowing guests to keep an eye out for new arrivals. Hidden in the dunes a high-rise building has been constructed to make the plaza visible from the main road. The building is a hotel aimed at port employees – its different purpose is emphasized by its stand-alone position. The front of the building consists of long horizontal stripes. Windows are set slightly further inwards; this creates a ‘third order’ effect which makes the building appear larger. In this it corresponds with the scale both of the programme and the harbour itself. The height of the windows has been calculated to create a view of the green outside from both a sitting and standing position. Pioneers To be a pioneer is to boldly go where no one has gone before. But with all sorts of resources lacking it also means possible deprivation and hardship. We have tried to solve these lacunae by approaching the available space on MV1 and MV2 in a creative manner. At the same time we have not neglected practical realities and created a plan that can be implemented.
