Rutland water became the sett ing for a forensi c examinat ion of how a nat ional authori t ies deci sion to place a reservoir had a forever changing impact on the environment and the l ives of those who l ived there. Socrates’ Ancestor; an essay on archi tectural beginnings (McEwen, 1993) became a guiding hand in poet icly determining how the uni que and intertwined narat ives can be formulated, at a micro and macro level, into a a thesi s project. “i f a straight l ine i s the shortest di stance between two i fated and inevi table points, disgressions will lengthen i t; and i f these digressions become so complex, so tanlged and torturous, so rapid as to hide their own tracks, who knows - perhaps death may not find us, perhaps t ime will lose i ts way, and perhaps we ourselves can remain concealed in our shi ft ing hiding places calvino, (1996) six memos for the next millennium. p. 47

vernacular architecture | archiving
The sudden access to fossil fuels in the 1970s has had l i ttle sympathy for the tradi t ional omani archi tecture at both the domest i c and urban scale. The central i sat ion of power and nat ional i sat ion of the populace has led to a ‘moderni sat ion’ of l iving. The promi se of guarenteed amenit ies and less mantainance intensive l iving has seen ent ire communi t ies across the country transit ioned into new-build housing projects. The Mini stry of Her itage and Culture sought ArCHIAM / NTU to document and study a fastly eroding hi stori cal record wi th a view to propose a network of strategi c intervent ions to lure use back into these culturaly signi fi cant places.

The ini t ial season of fieldwork took place over a 6 week period which saw us fully document 4 tradit ional, yet di st inctly di fferent, Omani settlements. Living close to si te enabled us to learn much from the locals about how the settlements funct ioned but also the inter-tribal and pol i t i cal dynamics. While spending long hours slowly meander ing between the dry and dense walls, a humbl ing sense of how l i fe must have been l ike began to develop

There i s a new level of symbiosi s between the human being and machines, in whi ch interface plays a key role. After substant ial data gathering on si te for the mini stry of heri tage and culture, the work was taken back and turned into a report advocat ing certain strategi c intervent ions wi th an aim to enhance and react ivate the now abandoned settlements. The research provides a thurough foundat ion from which a cohesive design can be developed
