Leicester, UK RG+P Architects Ltd

Architectural Assistant Pt.2 Aug 2016 - May 2017

In addition to fulfilling my duties as a Pt.2, I presented a business case to the directors outlining a case for setting up a dedicated drone department. This report was comprised of a breakdown of market research, competitors, overheads and potential for return on investment. After training up an existing company employee in drone applications in architecture, photogrammetry & general aerial surveying skills, I obtained my Civil Aviation Authority Licence to fly drone for commercial purposes. The company now boasts the capability to deliver their existing services with added value, bringing them up to speed with the latest industry technology and providing a unique selling point over other architectural practices.

UK / OMAN Nottingham Trent University / ArCHIAM

Architectural Research Assistant July 2013 - Dec 2014 Supported the development of research outputs in architectural documentation and heritage management planning of historical and traditional settlements in the Sultanate of Oman. Principle duties included assisting with the basic research on Heritage Documentation and Management Planning in Oman. This involved undertaking and recording the outcome of fieldwork, assisting in the development of questionnaires, conducting surveys and literature / database searches and interviewing inhabitants. Produced visualisations and other 3D drawings of architectural and urban conditions and propositions, both hand-drawn and computer generated. Made significant use of the latest digitall documentation methods, including rapid prototyping and the operation of a microcopter.

UK / OMAN Nottingham Trent University / ArCHIAM

Architectural Research Assistant July 2013 - Dec 2014

The sudden access to fossil fuels in the 1970s has had little sympathy for the traditional omani architecture at both the domestic and urban scale. The centralisation of power and nationalisation of the populace has led to a ‘modernisation’ of living. The promise of guarenteed amenities and less mantainance intensive living has seen entire communities across the country transitioned into new-build housing projects. The Ministry of Heritage and Culture sought ArCHIAM / NTU to document and study a fastly eroding historical record with a view to propose a network of strategic interventions to lure use back into these culturaly significant places.

fieldwork | immersion

The initial season of fieldwork took place over a 6 week period which saw us fully document 4 traditional, yet distinctly different, Omani settlements. Living close to site enabled us to learn much from the locals about how the settlements functioned but also the inter-tribal and political dynamics. While spending long hours slowly meandering between the dry and dense walls, a humbling sense of how life must have been like began to develop

UK / OMAN Nottingham Trent University / ArCHIAM

Architectural Research Assistant July 2013 - Dec 2014

The copters outputs from a few relatively simple but well considered flights informed topographical sections, 3D models, building elevations, assisted in understanding morphology and allowed us to study structures situation from otherwise impossible views ““The observer is neither camera nor eye, but video-dependant.

copter | relativising reality 50

There is a new level of symbiosis between the human being and machines, in which interface plays a key role. The progressive infiltration of electronic means in the world makes us see the world more from within, relativising the idea of reality.” Muller, Willy; the metapolis dictionary of advanced architecture

After substantial data gathering on site for the ministry of heritage and culture, the work was taken back and turned into a report advocating certain strategic interventions with an aim to enhance and reactivate the now abandoned settlements. The research provides a thurough foundation from which a cohesive design can be developed

Vic, Australia Soft Loud House Architects

Architectural Assistant Pt.1 October 2009 - March 2010

Post part 1 placement was spent in Australia working for principle architect Alvyn Williams. Day to day duties included producing planning applications and detailed documentation for dwellings and school buildings Additional work included digital visuals, online blog, production of planning guidelines for local municipality, engagement with planners, engineers & clients.

56

Projects • Steels Creek Underground House

A project which went on to feature on Australian Grand Designs, this was a new build project to replace a previous home destroyed in the bush fires in 2009. Making a fire resilliant building was a priority in the brief as the clients had been lucky to escape the disaster with their lives. Making the home as energy efficient as possible with minimal to no energy bills was another primary objective in the client’s ambitions for this project. I was involved from early briefing stages the planning drawings and the production of tender drawings.

• Melbourne Rudolf Steiner School

An prominant Steiner School in Melbourne was expanding and required and additional building to provide a multipurpose space for all year groups. The primary space was a EUrythmy hall , a large open space flooded with natural light to be used for the practice of This building had been granted planning permission when I received it. I produced the full set of tender drawings drawings.

• Warburton Shops

A set of 5 commercial units with lettable office space above and a carpark to the rear was produced alongside a demolition application to replace an existing dwelling on an economically strategic plot. The site is close to the modest town centre and positionved directly off of the main road running through the town. I produced the full set of planning drawings.

• Shire Planning Guidelines

As part of an iniative to help alieviate the rebuilding costs for home owners following the devistation of the bush fires disaster in 2009, the district council commisioned Soft Loud House Architects to produce a series of planning guideline drawings. These guidelines featured examples of the most common types of planning applications (new home, extension & refurbishment, demolition and commercial), illustrated with full sets of planning drawing examples and annotations.
