This project began with the observation of sitting postures on at UC Berkeley [A]. Two iconic locales on the campus were chosen to simultaneously investigate what particular kinds of objects can be made for sitting with reference to the celebrated activities of the place. It became clear that an object that could be amenable to both sitting and standing could be used during regular campus activities, or protest. In a brief period, I built 50 study models to develop this idea [B]. A study model was chosen [C] to prototype at different scales and build at fullscale [E], and to begin to develop detailed drawings for future construction.

WATER REACH The 2013 WATERMARKS Competition sought to reward proposals that successfully inculcate an understanding of climate change and sea level rise in vulnerable communities. Using the footprint and elevation of the average South Prescott home (a), WATER REACH reveals the dynamism of water through an articulation of the site’s history. The proposal features a landbridge to connect residents of South Prescott to the San Francisco Bay. Its tides inundate a restored marsh inlet, while storm water drains into and around 19 concrete platforms. The potential impact of sea level rise is made visible through a steel line, referencing the height of 100 year sea level rise projections. In doing so the connection residents once to the bay is re-established (b). PARTNERS: Marta Gual-Ricart // Eulaila Rae Ishee // Catherine Schy-Reibel

In order to restore this ecologically fraught section of the Walnut Creek Watershed I argue for a two phase process, the first phase connects both identities to the creek, increasing the town’s memorability and the creek’s social capital as a front door locale.

The Clark Kerr Athletic Campus houses dormitories and facilities for the University of California’s elite athletes and scholars. A phenomenological analysis of the site revealed the significance of moving along an east-west axis through the campus to the site; an aging gymnasium and athletic field built at the edge of Derby Hill and its culverted seasonal creek. The East-West axis of the campus helped to inform a SPINE like parti to organize a grand pathway, intensified athletic facilities, and a storm water management plan. Three towers hold a DATUM of towers which act as cisterns and monumental points of reference.

Polk Street is a major thoroughfare for cyclists and residents of San Francisco’s most dense neighborhood; the Tenderloin. The high density is due in part to the numerous SRO Hotels which provide housing for some of the city’s lowest income residents. The small size of these units emphasize the need for substantive outdoor space; with places to sit and relax. Thus as the city considers a redesign to accommodate biking and pedestrian use, they must trial such changes in spaces with the highest needs for outdoor space. The following proposal uses a kit of parts to create a set of outdoor spaces.

The Presidio of San Francisco is a historic military base that since being decommissioned has been amended for civilian use. Apart of these changes includes the interest in developing facilities for educational and recreational use along the recently renovated lawn of at the Main Post [A]. While these facilities are being planned, the Presidio National Trust has expressed an interest in developing semi-permanent structures [B-F] to promote use of the space and to determine what types of programs will be most successful. 16

Manhattan’s edge holds several modes of movement. To begin the East River has some of the strong urban tides in the United States and has been listed as a highly valuable estuary for tidal energy research. Secondly, this edge has
become a refuge for cyclists and pedestrians who would otherwise frequent crowded avenues. Lastly, the edge has been conceived as a mode of egress for the entire city during a major catastrophe, and while this is the case, a small portion of Manhattan is missing a publicly accessible promenade for the aforementioned functions. Two historic phenomena informed this proposal: 1. The deformation of the O’Farrel Grid into public PARKS, ALLEYS, + PLAZAS, and 2. The chaotic extension of this grid with a “... forest of masts” in the effort to physically create new space. Thus the history of extending the grid into the Bay is used as metaphor for the extension of public space with a series of vertical elements. These elements serve as wind breaks, playground equipment, vegetation, sculpture and more. 20

GARDEN TYPES: HISTORIC AND NEW Saint James Park in downtown San Jose was built nearly 150 years ago with reference to English public gardens (A) of the 19th century. Over the decades, the park has changed with little consistency in its designed experience. The City of San Jose put forward a competition to redesign the park, with the hopes that it would reflect the history of the historic neighborhood, and the city’s aspirations for new and continued development.

REMEMBER / IMAGINE: Was the chosen project title for this winning competition submission. The team consisted of myself, Principal-in-Charge Willett Moss, and Haley Waterson. Together, we developed a concept that: 1. Addressed the noteworthy historic context and features within the Saint James Park (B) 2. Provided a frame for new programming and infrastructure within the park, as well as accommodating for interim programming and activities within the park (C).

(1) The central component to the proposed design of this park, is the creation of a rich GARDEN EDGE reminiscent of the Victorian ornamental gardens that were predominant in this historic neighborhood.
(2) Currently, Saint James Park features five monuments interspersed throughout the grounds. The MONUMENT WALK was envisioned as a tool to knit together these historic resources (B) for a continuous experience, and to divide the park between it’s garden edge, and it’s more modern program center.
(3) The PICNIC ROOMS were conceived as fun sitting spaces which enable adjacent neighborhoods a place for larger outdoor gatherings. With views towards a new pavilion and stage, this area was also thought of as a great place to sit during outdoor concerts and performances.
(4) The INTERACTIVE FOUNTAIN design reflects the team’s appreciation of site history, and its elements at all scales. We propose to cast reclaimed elements of this fountain (a fish spouting water,) for a new fountain with integrated, and interactive lighting. 23

There are several grade challenges with this site, with retaining walls, and a difference of 30 throughout the site. These challenges led us to several solutions including ramps, stairs and bridges to maintain maximum connectivity.
PLAY in Willie ‘Woo Woo’ Wong Playground is highly active and varied in age groups. In order to retrofit this park for seismic concerns, we underwent an extensive community engagement process (see #1 image below). After several meetings, the design team refined the GROUNDs to maintain existing programs, and adding new ones.
