Buying the right sleeping bag then is very important. As you’ll see, sleeping bags come with their own special ratings – and we’re here to help you decipher them.

Seasons Bags have a season rating: 1 is best for summer (around 4°C); 2 is roughly late spring to early autumn (0°C); 3 is great for mild to cold nights (0 to -5°C); and 4 is for really cold nights (-10°) and lower.

Clothing | Jackets Buyers Guide: Clothing The key to maintaining the right temperature and being comfortable outdoors whether it’s hot, wet or snowy, is layering. Multiple layers of clothes trap air between them keeping you warmer than, say, one big jumper. You can also benefit by stripping off layers as conditions change.

In general it’s best to go for a three-layered approach: a

baselayer (typically merino or synthetic) to wick away sweat, a mid-layer (such as a close-fitting synthetic fleece) that traps heat and then an outer layer, such as a waterproof jacket.
