A PAGE FOR WILL
solo piano Paul Paccione
a page for Will (for solo piano) This piece is dedicated to composer, theorist and teacher Wilbur Ogdon. It was written on request from the University of Calfornia, San Diego, for inclusion in a Festschrift in honor of his retirement. Their requirement was that submissions be no longer than one page. Will was the founder of UCSD’s Music Department, and in his quiet way he has had a lasting influence on the thinking of an entire generation of composers, theorists and performers of modern music. He was faculty advisor for both my wife’s and my own master’s theses. During this time, it was our goal (as it was for all of his students) to present to Will one well-written page of research a week. This short piece is yet one more “page for Will.” (Paul Paccione, 2003)
The piece was recorded by pianist Nurit Tilles and appears on the c.d. recording “Our Beauties Are Not Ours,” New World Records (2010), Cat. No. 80706: (www.newworldrecords.org). Paccione’s scores are available from Frog Peak Music, Box 1062, Lebanon, NH 03766; www.frogpeak.org). Cover Image: Sean Scully
