CALLS for wind ensemble
Paul Paccione
FLIGHT CALLS Paul Paccione (2016) Composed for Michael Fansler and the Western Illinois University Wind Ensemble “It soared, a bird, it held its flight, a swift pure cry, soar silver orb it leaped serene, speeding, sustained, to come, don't spin it out too long long breath he breath long life, soaring high, high resplendent, aflame, crowned, high in the effulgence symbolistic, high, of the ethereal bosom, high, of the high vast irradiation everywhere all soaring all around about the all, the endlessnessnessness...” - James Joyce, Ulysses Program Note Flight Calls is composed of various forms of calling – horn calls, fanfares, the sound of bells, and, most importantly, the call of birds. These various instrumental calls are juxtaposed, horizontally and vertically, to form a complex layering of musical activity. These instrumental calls are temporarily interrupted by music that is more still and mysterioso in character, marking a temporary suspension in the forward movement of the music. The piece was composed for Michael Fansler and the Western Illinois University Wind Ensemble. It was written with the support of a W.I.U. Summer Stipend grant. - Paul Paccione
