The following photographs were shot in some of Page’s (Arizona) slot canyons; narrow, deep gouges in the area’s sandstone, eroded by uncountable years of flash floods and the detritus they carry into the Colorado River. Depending on their geological structure, the canyons can be lit by direct sunlight from above, indirect light reflected from the intense blue of the Arizona sky or light reflected from the rock itself. Separately, or together, these illuminations create a photographic palette which is unique. These photographs are but a glimpse of three of the areas canyons. According to one Navajo guide I spoke to, there are many more which remain almost unknown to the outside world.
