the photos i took during my time in Europe as well as the people and places which inspired them have had a profound influence on my desires for a year of personal explorations; i am more interested in beauty, i have a confidence in the direct translation of physical, emotional, and spiritual reality through the camera without editing, and i am continuing to experiment with putting photos out of focus.

we will all eventually graduate with a degree; most of us will move on to become architects, and understand every nuance of how a building is realized from the first ground breaking to the final brush of paint. sadly, however, only some will create beautiful architecture. this is the consequence of the stifled education and this is the trend it pains me to see continued within school all around me.

there is power and beauty in simplicity - a greater clarity of meaning attainable by disregard for the more inconsequential detailing of a space, which proves only to be detrimental to the impactful nature of space. simple space feels right regardless of the emotions it conveys or brings about.

the room of confinement, 10.02.13 confinement does not rid me of the experiences and people who are a part of me but rather strengthens or questions their existence in my heart and soul

the room of action, 10.02.13 an individual ready for action has passed by any stages of doubt and inquiry to a state of empowerment and inspiration

the room of defecation / detox / release, 11.02.13 suspended in its own shit, the room is split open like an egg to reveal a luscious inner coating

the powerhouse, 12.02.13 this room isn’t a harsh confrontation with my footprint, it is a celebration of mankind’s achievements in power and subsequent neglect of a way forward

the room of inquiry, 10.02.13 inquiry is a catalyst for evolution and discovery

the room of substance / sustenance, 10.02.13 a place to feed, to bathe, to be warmed by the sun; an oasis for those elemental things we need the most

the room of insanity, 10.02.13 the opposite of the room of action, not due to the lack of activity with, but due to its opposing departure from doubt and inquiry

the stage, 12.02.13 the stage is the final landing place of the room of action; it is the white beyond action’s blue collar

the room of growth / generation, 12.02.13 darwin’s theory applies to those who don’t

the room of isolation, 13.02.13 do not let me hide

there is a great spirit, 11.02.13 here i am lord

the room of glutony / pleasure, 12.02.13 i seek pure enjoyment. that which is most comfortable and pleasing or exciting and exhilirating will always take preference

“On his return to Guadalajara, Barragán began to conceive new methods by which he could create what he called an “emotional architecture,” one that would encourage meditation and quietude. In 1935 he moved to Mexico City, where he began to apply the principles of Le Corbusier and the International school. With the evolution of his own ideas, his works began to take on the elements that characterize his mature period—natural siting, simple surfaces (slabs of concrete, immense walls of stucco), water features, the use of colour, and so on.” -Encyclopedia Britannica

Paid for by the countless unsponsored hours of work by Mr. Paul Francois Schumacher on architecture made for the people who will inhabit it and not for those who seek to benefit financially from the soul. We have focused on our supposed need for unsupplanted stimulation, forgetting that that which we need most is fulfillment of the heart, mind, body, and soul.

“We are often unaware that our current experience of a living space is influenced by our past. Emotionally-charged memories of past living spaces powerfully influence our decisions about our most intimate environment. One size does not fit all. Your “emotional architecture”, like your fingerprints, is unique.”
