Buying & selling a car in Spain

B

uying or selling a used car in Spain can be a hazardous business, but if you take care to ensure that all the necessary paperwork is completed to cover yourself against liabilities, things should go smoothly.

Buying a car in Spain

When buying a car you’ll need to ensure sure you have at least one of the following (though, it’s best to have as many as possible with photocopies). • • • •

Permiso de Residencia or Residence Permit (NIE) or passport. Your escrituras, or house deeds, or a rental contract for a minimum of one year. Although it should not be required, it is a good idea to have a Certificado de Empadronamiento or proof of residence in your municipality, available free or for a few cents from the Town Hall. It should not be older than three months. Some car dealers insist on it, and if you don´t have it, everybody wastes time until the dealer checks his facts. If you are financing the car through a dealer you will also need to provide atres nóminas, your three last payslips, or some other proof of income, such as a copy of your work contract.

Buying a car from a private seller involves you and the seller entering into a joint legal relationship and handling all the paperwork yourselves. You and the seller must draw up a Contrato de compraventa (a purchase agreement), and make the transfer of ownership at the Registro de Vehículos (the vehicle registration desk) of the Jefatura de Tráfico (Traffic Department). You both fill in and sign the Solicitud de Transmisión de Vehículos (transfer document), and keep a copy. Make sure that the date and time of the transfer appears on the Contrato so that any traffic fines the seller has left unpaid are not passed on to you. If you are buying a car you must ask the seller for two further documents. The local car tax, impuesto sobre la circulación de vehiculos, should be fully paid up to date (ask to see the vendor’s passport or identity card to check their signature is genuine, and ask for a photocopy for your own security, in case anything goes wrong). The other document you should have is a transferencia. This is obtainable from Trafico and should be completed and signed. Help with all these papers can be given by a competent gestor or by the Real Automovil Club de España (RACE). Be careful to check the legal status of any car you buy. All cars over four years old must be inspected and must pass the inspeccion technical de vehiculos (ITV), equivalent to the MOT test.

If you buy a vehicle from a reputable car dealership, they usually handle all the paperwork on your behalf to complete the ownership transfer. However, they will look to you for payment of Trafico’s transfer tax and fee. The transfer will take a minimum of fifteen days. Trafico charges are approximately 40 Euros plus a tax amount that is 4% of the book value of the vehicle.

Paperwork for buying a car in Spain

Whether you decide to buy from a private seller or a dealer, similar paperwork is involved. You should ask to see the originals of all documents, particularly when dealing with a private seller. • The Permiso de Circulación or Log Book, which is the car´s ID. It shows proof that the chassis number (vehicle identification number) corresponds with the one on the vehicle´s registration document, and provides information on the car, such as the number plate, make, model, name and address of the owner and when it was first registered. • A Transferencia, or transfer of ownership form. • The Inspección Técnica (or ITV) document or MOT, stamped and dated on passing the last inspection and detailing when the next one is due. This proves that the car met the minimum environmental and road safety standards required by law. • The Impuesto Sobre Vehiculos or road license fee for the current financial year, paid in full.

Selling a car in Spain If you are selling a car, you must sign the section on the back of the permiso de circulación which begins ‘Transferido …’. To make sure no problems arise you should also write in the date of the sale. This obliges the new owner to complete the paperwork within 10 days. You can also notify the jefatura provincial de trafico of the sale, to cover yourself in case the buyer omits to change the name on the car’s papers. If the car is still in your name after the sale, the new owner could be running up fines for which you will be liable. You can check this: ask at the jefatura for the form called solicitud de datos del registro de vehiculos (request for vehicle registration details). This will tell you whether or not you are still the car’s registered owner. It is however a legal requirement for the buyer to transfer the vehicle into their name as soon as possible after its purchase.

BENEFITS OF ECU REMAPPING

& why the manufacturers don’t do it!

Veloc Tuning

E

CU remapping will not only improve the engines power and torque figures, it will also sharpen the throttle response and widen the power-band. This will make the power delivery a lot more linear, which in turn will make the vehicle feel a lot livelier to drive and the engine more flexible. Manufacturers generally sell one vehicle that covers various markets, with different tax and emissions regulations; different climates with extremes of heat, cold, humidity; different fuel quantities; different operating altitudes, etc. A manufacturer has to take all of these factors into consideration and make substantial compromises in the vehicles operation. As a driving enthusiast, you do not need or want such restrictions placed upon your vehicles ECU and its performance therefore you can benefit from the hidden power and torque locked away within your engine management system. The other main benefit of remapping will be a reduction in fuel consumption. With the extra torque especially at the bottom of the rev range you will see a fuel saving, as it will require less throttle input to maintain motorway speeds, you can drive in a higher gear at a slower speed as well as helping significantly when fully laden, towing or on gradients and even in start stop traffic. The emissions are improved, due to a more efficient engine, and everything is kept well within safe limits of the engine. Veloc Tuning are proud to announce that we are now “IMI Certified Professional Engine Tuners” here in Spain. The IMI is the “Institute of the Motoring Industry” that set very high standards of training and expertise within the Motoring Industries in the UK. We are fully qualified within our field. Do not settle for anything less.

ver the past several months, questions surrounding the socalled Apple Car have switched from “Will they or won’t they?” to “When?” and “What will it look like?” which has of course set the rumour mill to working overtime. So what do we know so far? The Apple Car an electric concept car is allegedly under development under the code name “Project Titan.” Apple is said to have hundreds of employees working on creating the vehicle but little is known about the cars styling, but sources have suggested it may resemble a minivan.

It is believed The Apple Car is still in the early stages of development, the project is being led by Steve Zadesky, VP of Product Design. In September of 2015, the Apple Car was upgraded to “committed project” status, meaning Apple will focus even more attention on development and a proposed completion date has been set for 2019. We have no idea what the Apple Car will look like, but based on Apple’s existing product line and its desire to expand iOS beyond the iPhone and the iPad, we can assume that any Appleproduced car will integrate deeply with the iPhone.

THE NEW MINI CLUBMAN Another new chapter F ollowing the success of the re-energised MINI 3-door Hatch and the successful launch of the MINI 5-door Hatch, the new model offers customers a premium vehicle featuring the highest level of ride refinement ever seen in a MINI. The car’s much-loved signature design feature – its split rear doors – are retained, while accessibility and everyday usability are further enhanced thanks to four full-sized side doors. The resulting car is a powerful fusion of sleek lines, innovative touches and first-rate materials with generous space for five occupants, excellent luggage capacity and classic MINI driving characteristics. With a more mature and sophisticated design, the new MINI Clubman’s dimensions are larger than those of the previous generation MINI Clubman. It’s also 270 mm longer and 73 mm wider than the MINI 5-door Hatch, with a wheelbase which is 100 mm larger. The boot has a volume of 360 litres, which can be extended to 1,250 litres by folding the rear seats flat. The latest generation of MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology engines have been installed under the bonnet, with three units available from launch – the MINI Cooper Clubman, MINI Cooper D Clubman and MINI Cooper S Clubman. CO2 emissions are as low as 109g/km, with fuel economy of up to 68.9mpg. New to the MINI brand is an 8-speed Steptronic transmission, available as an option on the MINI Cooper S Clubman and the MINI Cooper D Clubman. Exceptional handling comes courtesy of a suspension set-up which is unique to the new MINI Clubman. Numerous features make their MINI brand debut on the new Clubman, included an electric parking brake, full electric seat adjustment and the optional MINI Yours Interior Styles with backlit door bezels. The new MINI Clubman includes MINI’s highly acclaimed Navigation System as standard on all models, exemplifying the high levels of standard equipment across the range. Furthermore, every MINI Clubman also benefits from the MINI

has opened in the regeneration of the MINI model family, with the debut of the new MINI Clubman

Excitement Package as standard, which features a projection of the brand logo on to the ground beneath the driver’s side door mirror when the car is opened and closed, as well as extended interior lighting.

Exterior design: distinctive proportions with typical brand flair The new MINI Clubman showcases a contemporary reinterpretation of its predecessor’s design, combining sporting style with outstanding functionality. The car’s silhouette, with its extended roof line and steeply angled rear, remains an obvious link to the Clubman’s heritage, both recent and historic. The newcomer has an overall length of 4,253 mm, width of 1,800 mm and a height of 1,441 mm. The wheelbase measures 2,670 mm, while the track width is 1,564 mm at the front and 1,565 mm at the rear. Unmistakably a MINI, the Clubman’s characterful exterior styling brings a new sophistication to the model. The front end is defined by circular headlamps with chrome surrounds, the hexagonal contours of the radiator grille and the sculpted ‘power dome’ of the bonnet. The wide lower air inlet highlights the car’s solid and purposeful stance, with the bumper trim

serving as a number plate carrier and finished in high-gloss black. On the MINI Cooper Clubman and MINI Cooper D Clubman, the section of the radiator grille above this is subdivided by three gloss black ribs. On the MINI Cooper S Clubman it has a chrome rib bearing a red ‘S’ logo set in a chrome surround. Arched turn indicators are positioned in t h e lower section of the headlamps. In standard form, both the daytime running light and parking light are generated by additional units integrated into the front apron. The optional fog lamps are also positioned here. LED headlamps are available as an optional extra, surrounded by an LED daylight driving ring.

Generous interior space and a stunning new cabin design The four full-sized doors improve access to the cabin of the new MINI Clubman, which is truly premium in nature and a clear signal of the car’s sophisticated personality. A comprehensive reworking of the familiar MINI concept creates generous passenger space for five occupants, and ensures a unique and cohesive design ambience. The striking style of the instrument panel and centre console continues into the door trim. The iconic circular central instrument layout is at the heart of the dashboard, and fitted with a full-colour 6.5 or 8.8-inch screen. It serves as a display for infotainment, phone and navigation functions, and has an LED ring surround which can optionally respond to the current situation on the road and to specific operating procedures by means of an interactive lighting display.

Powerful engines with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology The new MINI Clubman is offered with the choice of two petrol engines of three and four cylinders, plus one diesel with four cylinders at launch. All come with MINI Twin-Power Turbo Technology and meet EU6 exhaust emission standards. Six-speed manual transmissions are standard on all versions of the MINI Clubman. These are characterised by low weight, a high level of internal efficiency and outstanding shift comfort optimised with carbon fibre friction linings for the synchroniser rings. For the new MINI Cooper Clubman, an optional six-speed Steptronic transmission is available. It provides increased efficiency and a high level of shift comfort, as well as shift dynamics optimised for sporty driving. The four-cylinder engines in the MINI Cooper S Clubman and MINI Cooper D Clubman can be specified with an 8-speed Steptronic transmission – a first for MINI. When the 8-speed sports automatic transmission is selected on MINI Cooper S Clubman, it has the additional benefit of steering wheel paddles for manual gear changes. The technology provides even more efficient, comfortable and sporty driving due to a broader gear spread and smaller engine speed steps. The brand’s pioneering MINIMALISM technologies are also fitted as standard, with shift point display, brake energy regeneration, active cooling air flaps and needs-oriented control of the fuel and coolant pump as well as other ancillary components.

Pricing and standard specification With production starting at MINI Plant Oxford later this year, order books for the New MINI Clubman are open at MINI dealerships around the world . Pricing for the newest member of the MINI family starts at €23,999 - €27,999 with a generous standard specification which includes 16” Revolite Spoke alloy wheels, MINI Navigation, Bluetooth hands-free, interior lights pack, central display with LED ring, MINI Excitement pack, start/stop with keyless start among many other features. M. DOMENECH Audi Q5

2.0 TDI 170 CV Automatic Mod 2010 23.780 Euros The Audi Q5 is bigger than the Q3 and a smaller alternative to the full blown Audi Q7, but just because it’s not as large, it doesn’t mean the Audi Q5 isn’t as practical. As you’d expect of any Audi, it’s superbly refined and very well put together. But what most impresses about the Q5 is it’s carlike handling. In corners it feels like an Audi A4 with great body control, sharp steering and responsive brakes. As a family car, the Q5 is ideal.

Audi RS5

Mod 2014 12.000 Km Full options 87.800 Euros Sitting at the pinnacle of the Audi A5 range is the high performance RS5 - It’s powered by an updated version of the 4.2-litre V8 used in the S5 Coupe which delivers a mammoth 450bhp and a resulting 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds. However, what makes the RS5 really stand out from its competitors is the fact it comes with quattro allwheel drive. The result is one of the finest handling coupes around with immense grip and incredible traction, even on slippery roads or when exiting a slow, tight corner.

Automatic, Full options 2012*42.000 Km 108.500 Euros The 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S is a ripping, scalping, torque-wrenching, swivel-hipped snake of a car but it is also the most everyday-drivable 911.

M. DOMENECH Ferrari California Pininfarina Automatic 2010 55.000 Km (Consult for price)

Ferrari is probably the most famous name in automotive history and certainly the most evocative. It has created iconic sports cars and become a by-word for style, desirability and speed. And with the California it’s created one of most desirable and beautiful grand tourers around. The California may have been dubbed the ‘baby’ Ferrari when it was launched it’s far from being the ‘poor’ relation in the range in fact, it’s the perfect open top sports car.

Mercedes Ml 350

Bluetec D Automatic Full options, Mod 2014 27.000 Km. 68.600 Euros There’s much to like about the M-class - the first-rate cabin, modern tech, and towing ability. With its substantial proportions and AMG body-styling, the third generation M-Class is more muscular and imposing the ever. A great family car for 5 and luggage.

VW Beetle 2.0 TFSI Sport

Automatic, Aluminium wheels 18 Mod 2012 56.000 Km. 20.750 Euros With no GTI or R models planned, the Volkswagen Beetle 2.0 TSI represents the top of the Beetle range. It gets a 197bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that’s good for 139mph and a 0-60mph time of 7.5 seconds. What’s more, it’s reasonably efficient, considering the power, with an average economy of 37.2mpg. This Beetle is a definite head turner.

Crazy Concept Cars for the future

E

VERY GOOD CAR show features cool concept cars. Some of them are preproduction versions of vehicles automakers are working on, but the really fun ones are fanciful, even wild, visions of the future of mobility. And few concepts are quite as fun as those that roll out at the Tokyo Motor Show. We’ve selected six of the most fascinating, beguiling, persuasive, and nonsensical concepts from the Tokyo show. Most have no chance of reaching the public, but taken together, they offer a fascinating glimpse at what we may be driving - or what may be driving us - before too long.

1 Mercedes F 015 A shining hunk of metal that represents the automakers vision for the future of luxurious, electric, autonomous driving.

Mazda RX – VISION This concept car is powered by a concept powertrain, the Skyactive – R rotart engine. Rotary engines create power by spinning rotors rather than pumping pistons and Mazda successfully used the setup in 1991 to win the 24Hours of L Mans.

Suzuki ‘ Mighty Deck’ This car is a concept of utilitarian minicar with a canvas tip and small pick-up bed in the rear. This car was actually launched in the US in 2012 but withdrawn because of poor sales however in Asia the ‘Mighty Deck’ is going strong.

5 4 Nissan Gripz Nissan has gone a step ahead of self-driving cars with the Gripz. This funky concept car offers a dual personality which enables drivers to drive effectively around town or across the dunes. It runs on a hybrid engine with the electric half the same as that used by the electric Leaf and an efficient petrol engine. This cars looks like a nemesis of the superhero Juke!

Yamaha 4Wheeler The motorcycle manufacturer seems to feel it has to get into the action with this year’s 4Wheeler, a light, mid-engine two seat sports car – Not bad from the company behind two wheels!

6

Nissan Teatro for Dayz Designed for today’s young’uns who don’t care about driving only about sharing online experiences – This car is packed full of LED screens and pods for social networking. I’m sure if this car goes into production there will even be holograms!

T

he eagerly anticipated Princess 75 Motor Yacht has arrived!
