Buying & selling a car in Spain

B

uying or selling a used car in Spain can be a hazardous business, but if you take care to ensure that all the necessary paperwork is completed to cover yourself against liabilities, things should go smoothly.

Buying a car in Spain

When buying a car you’ll need to ensure sure you have at least one of the following (though, it’s best to have as many as possible with photocopies). • • • •

Permiso de Residencia or Residence Permit (NIE) or passport. Your escrituras, or house deeds, or a rental contract for a minimum of one year. Although it should not be required, it is a good idea to have a Certificado de Empadronamiento or proof of residence in your municipality, available free or for a few cents from the Town Hall. It should not be older than three months. Some car dealers insist on it, and if you don´t have it, everybody wastes time until the dealer checks his facts. If you are financing the car through a dealer you will also need to provide atres nóminas, your three last payslips, or some other proof of income, such as a copy of your work contract.

Buying a car from a private seller involves you and the seller entering into a joint legal relationship and handling all the paperwork yourselves. You and the seller must draw up a Contrato de compraventa (a purchase agreement), and make the transfer of ownership at the Registro de Vehículos (the vehicle registration desk) of the Jefatura de Tráfico (Traffic Department). You both fill in and sign the Solicitud de Transmisión de Vehículos (transfer document), and keep a copy. Make sure that the date and time of the transfer appears on the Contrato so that any traffic fines the seller has left unpaid are not passed on to you. If you are buying a car you must ask the seller for two further documents. The local car tax, impuesto sobre la circulación de vehiculos, should be fully paid up to date (ask to see the vendor’s passport or identity card to check their signature is genuine, and ask for a photocopy for your own security, in case anything goes wrong). The other document you should have is a transferencia. This is obtainable from Trafico and should be completed and signed. Help with all these papers can be given by a competent gestor or by the Real Automovil Club de España (RACE). Be careful to check the legal status of any car you buy. All cars over four years old must be inspected and must pass the inspeccion technical de vehiculos (ITV), equivalent to the MOT test.

If you buy a vehicle from a reputable car dealership, they usually handle all the paperwork on your behalf to complete the ownership transfer. However, they will look to you for payment of Trafico’s transfer tax and fee. The transfer will take a minimum of fifteen days. Trafico charges are approximately 40 Euros plus a tax amount that is 4% of the book value of the vehicle.

Paperwork for buying a car in Spain

Whether you decide to buy from a private seller or a dealer, similar paperwork is involved. You should ask to see the originals of all documents, particularly when dealing with a private seller. • The Permiso de Circulación or Log Book, which is the car´s ID. It shows proof that the chassis number (vehicle identification number) corresponds with the one on the vehicle´s registration document, and provides information on the car, such as the number plate, make, model, name and address of the owner and when it was first registered. • A Transferencia, or transfer of ownership form. • The Inspección Técnica (or ITV) document or MOT, stamped and dated on passing the last inspection and detailing when the next one is due. This proves that the car met the minimum environmental and road safety standards required by law. • The Impuesto Sobre Vehiculos or road license fee for the current financial year, paid in full.

Selling a car in Spain If you are selling a car, you must sign the section on the back of the permiso de circulación which begins ‘Transferido …’. To make sure no problems arise you should also write in the date of the sale. This obliges the new owner to complete the paperwork within 10 days. You can also notify the jefatura provincial de trafico of the sale, to cover yourself in case the buyer omits to change the name on the car’s papers. If the car is still in your name after the sale, the new owner could be running up fines for which you will be liable. You can check this: ask at the jefatura for the form called solicitud de datos del registro de vehiculos (request for vehicle registration details). This will tell you whether or not you are still the car’s registered owner. It is however a legal requirement for the buyer to transfer the vehicle into their name as soon as possible after its purchase.

Prosegur Tracking Systems YOUR car is the second most expense purchase you will make (after your homes) so ensuring you keep it safe is imperative. Today many car thieves are smart enough and capable of disarming or bypassing almost all variations of car alarm devices on the market today. If securing and protecting your car is a priority a GPS tracking system and monitoring device can provide you the theft recovery solution you are looking for. Re-acquiring your vehicle in a short period of time is essential because a thief could damage or strip the vehicle, leaving you the owner paying a high deductible and higher insurance premiums. Our tracking systems use GPS monitoring technology that will allow you to locate if required where your stolen vehicle is in flash, allowing police to quickly find and arrest the car thief and return your vehicle safely. Attractive Italian design

T

HE Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a stylish small family car that has set out to rival hatchbacks such as the VW Golf, Ford Focus and even more upmarket cars like the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is the Italian firm’s best-ever family hatchback and offers an injection of style compared to more run-of-the-mill models like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra. Only available as a five-door, the Giulietta is as striking as you’d expect an Alfa Romeo to be, featuring neat design touches such as the firm’s famous triangular grille, hidden rear door handles and LED taillights. The interior mirrors the Giulietta’s exterior, with a heavy focus placed on style. There’s a good balance between simplicity and head-turning design elements that add extra appeal, meaning the cabin is easy to use day-to-day, but still feels special. However, as with many Alfa Romeo models, build quality is lacking and doesn’t match up to the standards set by the current Volkswagen Golf. It’s also not as well laid out as some of its more modern rivals, with limited space in the rear making the Giulietta feel cramped. Having first gone on sale back in 2010, the cabin is now starting to show its age. There are six different trim levels to choose from starting with the entry-level Progressions model. Next up is the sporty Sprint specification, with the walk up to the top of the range QV Line model (excluding the Quadrifoglio Verde hot hatchback) completed by the Distinctive, Business Edition and Exclusive versions. There are five power units on offer in the Giulietta range: two petrol and three diesel. Both of the petrols are 1.4 turbos, offering either 138bhp or 167bhp. The higherpowered version is also available with Alfa’s TCT twin-clutch automatic transmission. Depending on trim level, Alfa offers a 105bhp 1.6 JTDm-2 turbodiesel, or a choice of 2.0-litre units, including a 148bhp engine and a more powerful 172bhp unit

...and punchy, turbocharged petrol engines are the highlights of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta range that comes with a six-speed TCT gearbox only. With prices starting from £18,240 you’ll have to pay more for a Giulietta than many of its rivals, but all models do get air conditioning, all-round electric windows, DAB radio and Bluetooth as standard.

Engines, performance and drive The Giulietta’s blend of comfort and performance is genuinely effective, with the Alfa proving to be at home on the motorway, uneven city streets and winding country roads. Twin-clutch models also get the option of paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel for manual gear changes if you want a sportier drive. This is only available on the most powerful petrol and diesel engines – the latter does get a bit loud at times but with 116g/km CO2 emissions is relatively efficient. It’s also relatively quick, with lots of low-down torque on offer. The 2.0 JTDm diesel manual models will accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds and is our pick of the range. As for the petrol line-up, the 1.4 litre turbocharged petrol works better in Alfa’s smaller Mito as it can struggle with the comparative bulk of the Giulietta. It remains a charismatic unit though, and the more powerful 170bhp 1.4 feels punchy

and keen to rev. For fans of the hot hatch there is the Quadfoligio Verde, (Cloverleaf to non-Italian speakers), with the same engine found in the 4C sports car. Producing 237bhp, it has a Golf GTI bothering top speed of 149mph. This makes it one of the fruitiest-sounding hot hatchbacks around, but it’s far from the most entertaining to drive. The dual-clutch gearbox isn’t as snappy when driving quickly as the QV’s main rival, nor is it as smooth to shift when pootling through town. The Giulietta is available with what Alfa calls its D.N.A switch. This alters the throttle response and steering weight between three driving modes: Dynamic, Natural and All-weather. Unfortunately, it feels like a gimmick and fails to provide a satisfying compromise between aggression and comfort, with too much weight in Dynamic mode and slack throttle response in the Natural and All-weather settings. The suspension on the Alfa Romeo Giulietta is soft enough to soak up most bumps on UK roads, and together with questionable cabin ergonomics it means the Giulietta isn’t the most comfortable car to live with. The pedals are positioned a little too close together and there’s no space to rest your left foot, while the steering wheel is also too far away, resulting in a less than perfect driving position. Visibility out of the back is poor because of the tiny rear window and thick Golf-like C pillars. Also, the dashboard layout is muddled and can be difficult to use while on the move – plus the optional sat-nav unit is small and sometimes hard to read. Rear passengers may have an uncomfortable time thanks to the reduced headroom due to the coupe-like styling and swooping roofline.

Interior, design and technology The Alfa Romeo Giulietta was facelifted in 2014, refreshed with a tweaked front bumper, a chrome grille and matt grey fog light surrounds. Different alloy wheels, extra colour choices and a higher quality interior also helped improve the car’s appeal. The Giulietta has very few competitors in the style stakes in this market. Rivals like the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf are far more conservative, and well finished details like the eye-catching front and rear LED lights, and hidden rear door handles help it stand out. However, the interior is much more reserved than the exterior design. Alfa has addressed some of the old car’s flaws, with sturdier seat bolsters, better-quality leather on the steering wheel and anti-scratch paint finishes added, but the Giulietta just isn’t up to VW group levels of quality.

Practicality, comfort and boot space Interior space wasn’t Alfa’s highest priority when it was designing the Giulietta, and it shows. Alfa’s are built for style, not practicality. You only get 350 litres of boot space, plus a high load lip that makes putting heavy or bulky items in the luggage bay pretty difficult. Even if you fold down the standard-fit 60:40 splitfolding back seats, the boot doesn’t expand that much and space is generally poor.

New child car seat laws in Spain becomes effective

N

EW Spanish car seating regulations for children set to take effect from 1st October stipulate that all passengers aged under 18 who are less than 1 metre 36 centimetres tall will have to travel in the rear seats of motor vehicles. This rule comes on top of the already existing ones concerning adequate car seats for young people according to their height and weight. There are, however, three sets of exceptional circumstances in which the new rule can be disregarded; although in all of them adequate car seats will still have to be used. The first of them is in the case of vehicles with no rear seats, and this exemption is extended to instances where all rear seating is already occupied by other young passengers and where it is not possible to fit the appropriate safety seats due to restricted space being available. In these cases the front passenger seat may be used. The law also requires that all child car seats be installed as per the manufacturers’ instructions, thus bringing the Spanish Highway Code in line with EU rules regarding seat belts and child safety seats. According to the DGT traffic authorities, the use of correct child retention seats reduces the risk of young passengers dying on the roads by 75%, while the risk of injury is cut by 90%.

AT A GLANCE: Which VW brands are involved in the scandal In addition, motorists should bear in mind that in the cases where it is permitted for children to use front seats the seat should only face backwards when the passenger airbag has been deactivated. Last year, two of the fourteen children who died aged under 12 on the roads of Spain while travelling in motor vehicles were not using any kind of safety restraint, and the same is true of 9 of the 82 youngsters who suffered injuries as passengers.

It is a scandal that has rocked the motor industry - Volkswagen says that 11 million diesel vehicles from several of its 12 brands are fitted with a system that can help them cheat through emissions tests. The geographic location of the vehicles remains unclear, beyond that 482,000 are in the U.S. and 2.8 million in Germany. But a fuller picture has emerged about which brands are affected. Here are the figures known so far: Volkswagen Passenger Cars 5 million Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles 1.8 million Audi 2.1 million Skoda 1.2 million SEAT 700,000

Spain’s Car Market continues to grow The Spanish new car market continues on its recovery trend in September with sales up 23% year-on-year to 70.386 units, the best September result in Spain since 2009 and already double the score of September 2012 (35.216) at the worst of the financial crisis. The year-to-date total is also up 23% on 2014 to 789.024 deliveries in 9 months. In the first sales results published since the VW diesel scandal broke on September 18th, Volkswagen manages outperform the market and remain in the brands pole position with sales up 28% to 5.979 and 8.5% share, distancing Peugeot (+21%), Renault (+5%), Opel (+20%) and Ford (+19%). Domestic carmaker Seat is up 29% but at #6 and 6.2% share it is well below its year-to-date level at #2 and 7.8%. Nissan (+26%), Audi (+41%), Skoda (+43%), Mazda (+51%) and Mitsubishi (+57%) impress, while Smart (+327%) and Jeep (+237%) take off. Model-wise, after dropping to a paltry 12th spot in August, the Seat Leon resumes its market domination and snaps the Spanish pole position for the 4th time this year with sales up a fantastic 57% year-on-year to 1.929 units and 2.7% share – however well below the 3.2% it commands year-to-date. The VW Golf is up 37% to #2 while the Nissan Qashqai (+48%) completes a very dynamic podium. The Opel Astra (#5), Peugeot 308 (#7) and Peugeot 2008 (#12) all gain 49% for very different reasons: runout prices for the former, new generation and station wagon for the latter. Notice also the Citroen C3 up 53% to #20, the Dacia Duster up 69% to #21, VW Tiguan up 58% to #25, VW Passat up 75% to #26 and the Opel Mokka also up 75% to #29. Among recent newcomers, the Hyundai Tucson remains at a very solid level in 28th place with 1.1% share, the BMW 2 Series Tourer is up 11 spots on August to break into the Spanish Top 50 for the first time at #49, the Renault Kadjar is up 9 ranks to #55, the Fiat 500X is up 23 to #65, the Ford Ecosport up 38 to #75, the Mazda CX-3 up 9 to #86 and the Ssangyong Tivoli is up 23 to #126. We welcome two new nameplates in the Spanish sales charts this month: the Mercedes GLC lands at #113 with 146 sales and the Honda HR-V arrives at #135 with 95 units.

Audi Q5

2.0 TDI 170 CV Automatic Mod 2010 23.780 Euros The Audi Q5 is bigger than the Q3 and a smaller alternative to the full blown Audi Q7, but just because it’s not as large, it doesn’t mean the Audi Q5 isn’t as practical. As you’d expect of any Audi, it’s superbly refined and very well put together. But what most impresses about the Q5 is it’s car-like handling. In corners it feels like an Audi A4 with great body control, sharp steering and responsive brakes. As a family car, the Q5 is ideal.

Audi RS5

Mod 2014 12.000 Km Full options 87.800 Euros Sitting at the pinnacle of the Audi A5 range is the high performance RS5 - It’s powered by an updated version of the 4.2-litre V8 used in the S5 Coupe which delivers a mammoth 450bhp and a resulting 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds. However, what makes the RS5 really stand out from its competitors is the fact it comes with quattro all-wheel drive. The result is one of the finest handling coupes around with immense grip and incredible traction, even on slippery roads or when exiting a slow, tight corner.

66 Magellano completes the story from Azimut

M

agellano hulls soften the impact of waves, cutting through them with the vertical bow. At the same time, the significant forward volume minimizes pitch and provides constant buoyancy support, even when the boat is descending the trough of a wave. As a result, the water has a hard time reaching the main deck, providing a sense of security both to those piloting the vessel and their guests. The Magellano is a design that allows you to eat up the miles; the pleasure of cruising in its purest form, under the banner of Italian Design elegance. The Magellano 66 takes this philosophy even further with surprisingly spacious interiors for its 20 x 5.4 meters. The main deck is all on one level; it has a large sliding door facing out over the cockpit all the way to the bow where the pilot station and galley are located. The main deck features elegance, functionality and a breath-taking view of the horizon. Highlights include a large L-shaped sofa facing an impressive bar cabinet, up to 50inch TV cabinet, and a dining table oriented across beam. All this comes with the standard version of the Magellano 66.

There is also a Navetta version. Positioning the internal stair amidship means the saloon/dining area can be separated from the piloting and forward galley area, for unprecedented privacy surpassing that of even bigger boats. The crew can carry out their jobs without having to access any of the boat owner and guest spaces. The door to the side walkway is from the galley, allowing the crew to reach their own cabin without crossing the saloon. At the same time, the boat owner and guests can access the saloon from their accommodations, without having to cross the galley and piloting station. The Navetta version also enjoys an expansive view out over the water, with sliding doors and panels that also facilitate mooring. On the outside your eye is drawn to the integrated terrace to the extreme aft of the flybridge, a design detail that puts the Magellano 66 in the big leagues. The culmination of a spectacular open deck, the terrace can be outfitted for the perfect relaxation environment, complete with comfortable cushions, scenic lighting, and an awning to shade the living area. Just like the Magellano 53, at the bow of the Magellano 66 there is an additional lounge area, here even more welcoming and private.

The first model was launched at the Cannes festival this summer, but the design of the Magellano 66 started long ago. It is built on the same foundation that makes all Magellano Collection yachts so special: the Dual Mode hull.

The storage space for all on-board and free-time equipment is unparalleled. There are enormous storage spaces in the bow and on the flybridge. On the lower deck, there is a large owner suite at full beam. Here, the spacious quarters are bathed in natural light for an elegant but also practical space with ample stowage. The owner has all the space they’ve always wanted with his and her spacious closet, chest of drawers, vanity, and an additional huge storage area under the bed. The closets in the VIP and guest cabins receive the same attention. Both cabins offer something extra because, as everyone says, there is never enough space on board. The fourth cabin is designed as a utility room but, upon request, can be outfitted as a cabin with bunk beds. The washer and dryer are conveniently located along the corridor. With two Volvo Penta D13 800 HP diesel engines, Magellano’s performance is perfectly in line with the philosophy of a modern Long Range yacht. Travelling at 9 knots in full displacement mode, it has a range of over 900 miles (including a 10% reserve). The double chine Dual Mode hull provides a purposeful shape that optimizes cruising both in displacement and planing modes, for a cruising speed of 16-18 knots and a maximum speed of 22 knots.
