INTRODUCTION At this present moment in time London unfortunately has a very serious and well documented problem with youth violence that is on the rise and has reached such disturbing heights for the first time in recent history London’s murder crime rate is higher than New York’s!!!

n Whatever the causes or the argument the fact still remains that something drastic needs to be done; as the present approach of just expelling problematic children from school clearly isn’t working! n A home office report has warned teenagers who are kicked out of school are more vulnerable to getting caught up in gang and drug violence.

MARTIAL MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION

n According to the Ministry of justice 63% of the UK prison population were expelled from school at some point (from the ages of 11-15) n 24% of the UK prison population were in the care system at some point as children! n Sir Martin Neary former Director General of Prison Service was famously quoted for saying “you may as well take the 13’000 children expelled from school a year and give them a prison sentence there and then” n Here at Martial Mindfulness Association we believe in early intervention deterring and guiding young people away from the wrong path as early as possible. n We want to support and work with mainstream schools, PRU units, care homes and the likes. Anywhere that children are at risk,

MURDERS IN LONDON AND NEW YORK IN 2018 This could be argued is due to a range of social indicators from high percentage of single parent households, lack of positive male role models, relative poverty, exposure to domestic violence, benefit dependency, lack of education, misinterpretation of masculinity, mental health etc.... These issues can then lead to drug abuse, poor diet, anxiety, obesity, depression, poor mental and physical health etc…

n In order to help children to provide them with the skills and confidence they need to make positive choices and unlock their full potential.

OUR MISSION

OUR MISSION Our mission at Martial Mindfulness Association is to help combat the negative social behavioural epidemic our beloved city is facing through martial arts, yoga, meditation and mindfulness, working with children from the ages of 11-16 either during school hours or as extracurricular activities. In addition ensuring that all children and young people adopt a healthy lifestyle, with a good diet is essential teaching them the role good nutrition plays in sport and how fuelling your body to get the best results and opportunities to participate in sport and culture is a leading priority of MMA.

Martial Mindfulness Association was the birth child of Phillip Tieu & Mark Ramsay-Jones who have been working together for the last decade to establish the art of MUAYTHAI across London working within GYMBOX across 11 different locations, creating the largest professional MUAYTHAI camp in England TEAM TIEU, along with the biggest professional MUAYTHAI promotion in Europe, MUAY THAI GRAND PRIX which domestically regularly fill venues such as INDIGO AT THE 02. With our live shows expanding all the way to Australia, signing up to 100 professional fighters including world champions and reaching more than 5 million viewers on YouTube, we have now expanded our product to K1 and MMA Grand Prix. This venture has been so successful and caught the eyes of so many that it has now been acquired as a property of UFC FIGHTPASS to be streamed as a live event across the world on the official UFC platform. Last year in a conscious effort to give back and really help charities we believe in as well as introduce our amazing sport to a mass audience, with a third party we created THE WHITE COLLAR FIGHT CLUB A free 8 week training course where participants can learn the beautiful art of boxing or MUAYTHAI and help raise money for causes! In our first year we managed to raised over £140,000 for the NSPCC. This year we are delighted to be working with MIND The UK’s largest mental health charity and have already manage to raise £30,000 and estimate that this will exceed over £150,000 by the end of the year.

OUR AIM

MARTIAL MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION

Is to secure funding that will enable us to use our years of expertise and knowhow to bring the Martial Mindfulness Association program to as many at risk children and young people as possible, in an attempt to help combat serious youth violence across London. Monitoring its success it will then be rolled out to other cities with similar youth problems such as, Kent, Essex, Manchester, Birmingham, Yorkshire etc... We are committed to being a long term part of our young people’s lives, providing consistency, unconditional support and, with our specialist coaches empathy for their situation for as long as they need us. All our coaches are DBS and ISKA certified and fully insured

Our end game would be to see a failing, angry, at risk child come though our program equipped with all the skills needed to deal with anything life might throw at them.

“DON’T PRAY FOR AN EASY LIFE PRAY FOR THE STRENGTH TO ENDURE A DIFFICULT ONE” (BRUCE LEE) To see our students live, to progress, excel and have altruism for others. At the final stage of our program, having witnessed students completely turn their lives around with hard work and dedication we’d love to be in a position through funding and help from The United Kingdom MUAYTHAI Federation to reward them with a trip to the birthplace of MUAYTHAI to experience firsthand the vast culture Thailand has to offer - visiting temples, meditation and yoga retreats, elephant rehabilitation sanctuaries, floating markets, ancient ruins and national parks, famous MUAYTHAI gyms we are affiliated with; the list goes on…

MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS At Martial Mindfullness Association we believe that it is vitally important to create an environment in which children feel safe, are proud of and feel a sense of belonging to. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a fundamental theory in psychology, but it’s of more than just abstract interest.

MARTIAL MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION

This theory – invented by Abraham Maslow in 1943 – could be useful for everyone’s everyday life. The idea is that our needs range from the very basic, such as the things required for our survival, through to higher goals such as altruism and spirituality. The hierarchy is often presented as a pyramid, if the needs at the base of the pyramid aren’t met then achieving higher-level goals is extremely difficult. To put it more bluntly, if you’re starving, or without shelter, it’s much harder (though not impossible) to keep in touch with your higher-level needs, such as preserving the respect of your peers. As the Snickers advert says, “You’re not you when you’re hungry.” Maslow’s Hierarchy also helps to answer what seems like a typical first-world-problems question: if I have everything I need, why I am still unhappy? The answer the hierarchy suggests is that your basic needs are being met, but perhaps your higher-level ones are not. It’s a thought-provoking idea, and it’s easy to see why Maslow’s Hierarchy has remained a popular tool not just for psychologists, but also in education, business and management as well.

1. Physiological needs these are biological requirements for human survival, e.g. air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, sleep. If these needs are not satisfied the human body cannot function optimally. Maslow considered physiological needs the most important as all the other needs become secondary until these needs are met. 2. Safety needs protection from elements, security, order, law, stability, freedom from fear. 3. Love and belongingness needs after physiological and safety needs have been fulfilled, the third level of human needs is social and involves feelings of belongingness. The need for interpersonal relationships motivates behaviour Examples include friendship, intimacy, trust, and acceptance, receiving and giving affection and love. Affiliating, being part of a group (family, friends, work). 4. Esteem needs which Maslow classified into two categories: esteem for oneself (dignity, achievement, mastery, independence) and the desire for reputation or respect from others (e.g., status, prestige). Maslow indicated that the need for respect or reputation is most important for children and adolescents and precedes real self-esteem or dignity. 5. Self-actualization needs realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences. A desire “to become everything one is capable of becoming”. These needs are essential and should be every single human’s given right! The problem with a majority of children from deprived areas who are at risk, is that these needs are not being met. Or what is an even more scary and disturbing reality is that through grooming, Maslow’s 5 Hierarchy of Need are being met by unscrupulous gangs looking to exploit young impressionable people, by giving them food, clothing, money, perceived safety, and a sense of belonging all in an attempt to use them as pawns or foot soldiers. If there are no social programs and negativity, gangs or a gang culture is all our young people see as a society we are fighting a losing battle.

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS & YOGA?

Is a very simple form of meditation that was little known in the West until recently. A typical meditation consists of focusing your full attention on your breath as it flows in and out of your body. Focusing on each breath in this way allows you to observe your thoughts as they arise in your mind and, little by little, to let go of struggling with them. You come to realise that thoughts come and go of their own accord; that you are not your thoughts. You can watch as they appear in your mind, seemingly from thin air, and watch again as they disappear, like a soap bubble bursting. You come to the profound understanding that thoughts and feelings (including negative ones) are transient. They come and they go, and ultimately, you have a choice about whether to act on them or not. Mindfulness is about observation without criticism: being compassionate with yourself. When unhappiness or stress hover overhead, rather than taking it all personally, you learn to treat them as if they were black clouds in the sky, and to observe them with friendly curiosity as they drift past. In essence, mindfulness allows you to catch negative thought patterns before they tip you into a downward spiral. It begins the process of putting you back in control of your life. Over time, mindfulness brings about long-term changes in mood and levels of happiness and wellbeing. Scientific studies have shown that mindfulness not only prevents depression, but that it also positively affects the brain patterns underlying day-to-day anxiety, stress, depression and irritability so that when they arise, they dissolve away again more easily. Other studies have shown that regular meditators see their doctors less often and spend fewer days in hospital. Memory improves, creativity increases and reaction times become faster.

Yoga teaches acceptance and tolerance of others. In practicing yoga, kids learn early in life that all living beings are to be cherished and respected as they are, thus helping to create more peaceful local communities and a more peaceful world in our future. Any exercise program begun in childhood helps young people to remain physically active and healthy as a lifestyle. However, yoga takes that further by teaching not only the healthy habits mentioned above, but also a healthy approach to eating and the ability to calm oneself and focus the mind. When children learn to accept and love themselves for who they are, to see the good in others, to focus and calm their minds, and to be aware of their innate capabilities, they learn tools for resilience. They are more likely to be positive and optimistic about life and their abilities, and will hopefully be less likely to succumb to anxiety, depression and other mental health issues that are so prevalent today. Most importantly, yoga teaches young people that relaxation is not only allowed; it is encouraged. Relaxing is not easy and learning to relax takes practice. Yoga provides space for the mind to slow down and settle. Children within the western world are always told that they need to be engaged and productive. Their minds are leaping from one activity to another all day long, often right up until they crash at the end of the day. Yoga teaches kids that it doesn’t have to always be like that. In Eastern countries like Japan and China (where serious youth violence is not prevalent) young people are often taught such techniques within their curriculum. If children can learn how to relax and be still, they will be able to handle better the stressors and pressures that will begin to hit them as they get older.

WHY YOGA? Yoga has become quite main stream for adults in recent years, but we never considered sharing the practice with children or young adults. Yoga can benefit young people significantly, and in some ways, possibly even more so than it nourishes adults. Yoga teaches young people that their bodies are different; different bodies do different things and all of them are okay. There is no one better or worse at yoga than anyone else; we are all just exploring our bodies and learning from them in our own way. Yoga is truly for everybody.

MARTIAL MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION

WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

Yoga is about finding the balance between the physical and mental by combining martial arts and yoga together it provides the perfect balance of external controlled aggression and inner peace of mind, yin and yang. Children are natural yogis. Their innate trust in others, combined with their lack of inhibitions, allows them to receive the teachings of yoga and grow from them in inspiring ways. Adults have a lot to learn from the way children receive yoga!Â

WHAT TYPE OF MARTIAL ARTS? Our programmes include:

BOXING:

MUAYTHAI:

(the sweet science) called so because you have to find that perfect balance, a mythical perfect place between hitting and not getting hit, beyond fitness, technique, slickness that sweet spot.

MARTIAL MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION

(The art of the 8 limbs) an ancient art of boxing from Thailand which uses 2x hands 2x elbows 2x knees and 2x feet = 8 limbs. What is MUAYTHAI? MUAYTHAI or Thai boxing is the cultural martial art of Thailand. The origin of MUAYTHAI dates back several hundred years, and was, essentially, developed as a form of close-combat that used the entire body as a weapon. The Proud History of MUAYTHAI MUAYTHAI has been a part of Thai Heritage & History for over 2000 years as with most objects and traditions from ancient times, there exist many different versions of the History of MUAYTHAI, but all sources agree that MUAYTHAI was the primary (and most effective) Self Defence used by Thai warriors on the battlefields of conflicts and wars that have occurred many times in the history of the nation now know as, Thailand. The first know practice of MUAYTHAI as a “sport, off and away from the heat and chaos of the battlefield, occurred in the 15TH century when loosely organized competitions started spourting up around the country. MUAYTHAI soon became the favoured pastime sport for people from all walks of life, with training camps being established all over the country, with regulations being created and introduced into the sporting world of the early 20TH Century as one of a safe ring sport. MUAYTHAI has had many faces, as a popular ring sport, a Self Defence and a fitness program and as MUAYTHAI has become more and more popular organizations such as IFMA have been commissioned and established to regulate MUAYTHAI as a world sport. Now, MUAYTHAI is established around the world as a fitness for MUAY aerobic, as a ring sport MUAYTHAI and as a form of self defence Muay Boran.

12

Boxing: Boxing offers children several mental benefits that they need in their daily lives. Improved physical health and improved performance in the ring can build a child's confidence. In addition, when sparring an opponent or just punching a speed bag, extreme focus is required. This can translate into better focus in the classroom. According to most Boxing Gym, this sport also helps youngsters control anger and aggression. Children learn that losing their tempers in the boxing ring is actually counter-productive. When young boxers successfully complete rigorous workouts and matches, they also learn about selfdiscipline and determination. Boxing training includes jumping rope, jogging and sparring. All these activities improve a child's cardiovascular fitness. Boxers also spend a lot of time strengthening their arms and legs. Youth boxing training often focuses on bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, crunches and squats. Boxing can help children get into peak physical shape in order to endure the length and demands of up to a twominute boxing round. Proper footwork is an integral part of boxing. Fighters must efficiently move around the ring to deliver punches and evade them. They must also know how to properly distribute weight on each foot to pack the most power in each punch. The importance of both punching and footwork in boxing improves coordination and balance in children.

WHAT TYPE OF MARTIAL ARTS?

(The gentle art) as it roughly translates in Japanese, is an ideal self-defence discipline as it relies on submission by leverage, therefore a smaller practitioner can execute moves against a larger opponent. Brazilian Jiu –Jitsu or BJJ; A martial art, combat sport, and a self defence system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was formed from early 20th century Kodokan Judo ground fighting (NeWaza) fundamentals that were taught to Carlos Gracie by master Mitsuyo Maeda. Brazilian jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experimentations, practices, and adaptation from the Judo knowledge of Carlos who then passed their knowledge on to his extended family the Gracie’s. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and specific techniques, taking the conflict to the ground – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or selfdefence. Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling") and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are all part of Jiu Jitsu training for kids. Children have to learn new moves and face different situations where they need to apply those moves properly. Every situation is different, and requires building new lessons on the previously gained knowledge. Learning this at a young age is crucial for kids, and can help them tremendously in various aspects of life as they grow up.

One of the great benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training for kids is the fact that these sessions also focus on strengthening the bond between the kids themselves. This is a great opportunity for children to socialise and come out of their shell. In the end, one can say that BJJ brings people together that may not have got to meet each other otherwise. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches patience, respect and calmness together with the physical ability to defend oneself. The combination of these qualities makes BJJ one of the best self-defence practices. Children get to adopt a positive and collected mindset that can help them a lot in the future. That said the knowledge of physical self-defence becomes a realistic choice young people can make if ever necessary.

MARTIAL MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION

BRAZILIAN JIU –JITSU OR BJJ:

As it’s a powerful strategy to develop strong problem-solving skills, it’s no wonder that BJJ also fosters discipline and a sense of responsibility in kids. Jiu Jitsu requires patience, respect, dedication, and attention; these are all attributes that young learners can adopt quickly, and start applying them to other life aspects as well.

WHY NUTRITION?

MARTIAL MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION

How children eat today will have a striking impact on their health throughout adolescence and adulthood. Consuming nutritious foods helps children and teens grow, develop, do well academically and feel good about themselves. Good nutrition also helps prevent child and teen issues such as eating disorders, obesity, dental cavities, iron-deficiency, diabetes, anemia, osteomalacia or rickets, respiratory problems, low energy, anxiety, depression, dyslipidemia and acne. n In 2016/17, there were 617 thousand admissions in NHS hospitals where obesity was a factor. This is an increase of 18 per cent on 2015/16. n In 2016, 26 per cent of adults were classified as obese. This has increased from 15 per cent in 1993 but has remained at a similar level since 2010. n In 2016, 26 per cent of adults and 16 per cent of children consumed 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day. n In 2016/17, 1 in 5 children in Year 6 and 1 in 10 children in Reception were classified as obese. n The issue is more prevalent among older children. 23% of those aged 2-10 were overweight or obese, compared to 36% of those aged 11-15. Causes of obesity in children include unhealthy food choices, lack of physical activity and poor family eating habits. This rise in the number of overweight children is disturbing, because it causes health problems and can lead to social problems. Overweight children are more likely to be teased by their peers or to develop low self-esteem or body image problems. Once children are overweight, it requires a lot of effort and commitment for them to return to a healthy weight. Overweight and obesity in children are among the most important risks to children’s long and short-term health. Overweight children are very likely to become overweight adults. Statistics show that it is children and teens from more deprived areas of the city that suffer most of all from this epidemic.

A LASTING CHANGE FOR OUR CHILDREN

MARTIAL MINDFULNESS ASSOCIATION

The aim of this project summary document has been to provide the key details of Martial Mindfulness Association Project, to present the case for developing a facility that will provide exciting and constructive activities and services for children and young people, and to provide potential funders with the clear message of how they can directly influence and change the lives of our young people in our city.

This project will have an unquestionably positive impact on the lives of those in areas that suffers from a critical lack of provision and support for young people, especially those from communities who often feel disenfranchised. Our focus on our young people through this development will directly help those who are experiencing the crucial transition into adulthood whilst tackling the effects of growing up in an area of significant disadvantage. If you have any further questions or require a free demonstration of what we do please do not hesitate to ask. Kind regards Mark Ramsay-Jones 07931 850 451

“A fight is going on inside us, a fight between two wolves. One is evil it’s anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.” “The other is good it’s, joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. Question, “Which wolf will win?” Answer, “The one you feed.”
