MY RESEARCH BOOK

My 1st idea was all about spiders. The reason why I choice this was that there are so many new spiders coming to the UK but also you can get so many different conversations from this, good one and bad ones. The way I wanted to show this was as a poster and have typography spiders coming down the page. The words and sentences I wanted to use, were what people were said about siders and news articles about bits and spider attacks. As I was going though this I was thinking that it would be to much of a joke and wouldn’t really have a meaning to it so I got rid of this idea and started to think of things that could have a meaning behind what I was wanting to show.

My 2st idea I had was all about war. I wanted to make something that was all about what I though about what was happening in the news now. The way I wanted to show this was in a similar that ‘stinks- the death penalty’ (http://www.stink.tv/work/the-death-penalty/?cat=animation) The reason I wanted to do this is because without using many words you can see what they were trying to say. But as I was going though this I didn’t want to talk about something where I would disrespect someone or start an argument by saying something wrong. So I started to think of something that was opened in the say way as not having to say much.

Spectrogram A spectrogram is a visual representation of t he sp e c t r um of f re quencies in a sound or other signal as they vary with time or some other variable. Spectrograms are sometimes called spectral waterfalls, voiceprints, or voice grams. Spectrograms can be used to identify spoken words phonetically, and to analyze the various calls of animals. They are used extensively in the development of the fields of music, sonar, radar, and speech processing, seismology, etc.

Sound Waves I want to use sound waves in my work to try show a conversation in the same way I would want to show braille and sign language. Using the line ‘what do you mean’ but keep in simple. Looking into sound w a v e s I f o u n d one ar t ist t hat has done s omet hing similar to what I want to create. The artist is called Peter Crawley. He uses sounds and stiches them to make a poster.

Sign Language I wanted to use my own images for the sign language. I wanted to stick to the sentence ‘what do you mean’ but have different expressions to each poster. poster. I wanted to over lay the images using ‘CMYK’.

Oscilloscope The oscilloscope can be adjusted so that repetitive signals can be observed as a continuous shape on the screen. A storage oscilloscope allows single events to be captured by the instrument and displayed for a relatively long time, allowing human observation of events too fast to be directly perceptible.

Peter studied and continues to work in the field of Product Design. He also creates Stitched Illustrations. The illustrations are created by hand piercing various stocks of paper with a pin and then stitching the paper with a needle and cotton thread. Each line is a 1 minute long sequence allowing for any song up to 6 minutes in length. I find it interesting what songs are conversations look like as a sound wave. I like the way this artist uses this technique with different songs and conversations. This is something I would like to do, The way I would show this is not though stitching but as a poster. I would want to show a normal conversation and see what I would look like as a sound wave.

Peter Crawley

Brallie The reason I have choices braille is because it isn’t a conversation that everyone could understand, so I wanted to try show this but trying to make a simple typography poster where I use braille as a overlay. Because I was looking into sign language and sound waves I wanted to keep to the same line ‘What do you mean’ and show this as a question, general and with expression.

So I started to make quick 10 minutes posters to see what I could come up with and then I choice 2 that I liked the most. You can see these on the next 2 pages.

CMYK

I was looking into CMYK, I wanted to use this process on some sing language posters by over laying the image to get that colour change. I tested this on some speech bubbles that you can see on the left. I started off with all 4 colours but I realised that key (black) was over powering so I had to take layer out but as I started to move the bubbles about you could start seeing the key in the middle. I wanted to use my own images for the sign language. I wanted to stick to the sentence ‘what do you mean’ but have different expressions to each poster. So I would make a: happy, sad, angry, confused poster.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN.?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN. WHAT DO YOU MEAN? WHAT DO YOU MEAN!

These are some of the colours and text I had looked through. For the colour I stated at looking at what was around the cafe and the colours already being used. From this I started to use the colours and created different opportunities of what the logo colour could be. At the end of this I stuck with the colours purple, black and white for the clean and the use of colour that is already used and recognised by the customers. For the text I wanted a clean but different text so I started to go thorough different texts and picked my top 3 and started to use them on different layouts. I wanted to stick to using all the text.

O n e o f t h e G a p s t o re s I had a look at as the one i n L e e d s . I w e n t i n t o see what kind of posters they already had and the k i n d o f s p a c e t h e y h a d to add posters and indoor signs. A s I w a s w a l k i n g a r o u n d I could see that they had a l o t o f f y e l l o w a n d p e a c h c o l o u r s i n s i d e t h e s h o p . Also fro m the re po s t e r s they used a lot of red. They had a big window frontage, which had me thinking about image posters to make something more eye catching to students and passing customers. To s t a r t o f f w i t h I w a s t h i n k i n g t o u s e s o m e o f t h e i m a g e s t h a t G a p use for there social medias to get people looking at the images and understanding w h e r e they have come from. Recycling the old Gap work and try making them into something fresh.

T- Ta c t i c s How to advertise/ promote? A-Actions Sorting out everything out, creating posters and flyers. Having advertising on billboards and bus shelters. C- Control Managing the out come, making sure it is working and hitting the right audience.

Strengths- what students said Weaknesses – what students said - They have nice simple clothing for summer with - It isn’t really the 1st place I would look for clothing - They are less attractive in clothing I would rather their bright colour selection. - ‘I used to wear there clothing as a child and have shop at something similar like H&M and Primark, a good selection for children, it is where I get most as it is cheap. - It isn’t trendy as Top Man, River Island and Zara, of my nieces and nephews clothing’ Gap don’t have that fashion touch as these companies - There denim selection is good have. - They have some very nice dresses for summer - Because it is a company, which has been around - It doesn’t look like somewhere student would for many years and is trust worthy for their denim shop often and soft touch cotton materials. - To me Gap sells the same things every year.

Opportunities -

Threats-

From the promotion of 25% student discount the opportunities Gap would gain are:

Top threats that Gap would have are competing with top fashion retailers like; H&M, Zara, Primark, Top Man and River Island.

-Maximise GAPs income/profit margins -Gain new customers -Become more visible to the target market i.e. shoppers.

S.W.O.T I created a S.W.O.T analysis with students from Leeds and Huddersfield. I asked them what they think about GAP and what their Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats. The questions I asked were: Why would you shop at Gap? Have you ever purchased an item from gap for your self or a friend/ relative? Where do you shop other then Gap? Why do you think students don’t shop at Gap?

Gobold Text Bebas Neue Helvectica Neue Light Helvectica Neue Medium

Helvectica Neue Bold

Some of the text that I found that are useful and stand out. I think that these would look good but also looking at the brand guideline that I have receive from Gap. In there it shows the text they use is Helvetica Neue (light, medium and bold) So from this I was thinking to try use some of these in my posters, to try link to the original front. My aim is to try make the posters stand out so I have been looking at front that are bold but have that slight stretch to them like the Gap logo. The closest one I have found that I liked best is the gobold text.

These are some colours that I have looked at from the research that I have done into the Gap social media. A lot of the colours that I found they use are pastel and summery colours. So from this I am looking at using the colours on the left in to some of the posters and window signs.

First ideas

With this poster I was looking at adding an image at the back but every image I tried the font was hard to see, so I started to edit the image into colours. As i started to work with this I couldn’t find a colour that would work well. In the images o n the top you F r o m t y i n g d i f f e r e n t t h i n g s I c a m e t o t h e can see that dark colours m a d e t h e i m a g e h a r d c o n c l u s i o n to place the Gap logo I the top to read but when there was a lighter colour and then enlarge the quote from the bottom. i s m a d e i t m o re re a d a b l e , b u t i t w a s n ’ t t h e r i g h t t h i n g I w a s l o o k i n g f o r. This is the 1st concept I came up with this it started off looking like the one on the top left. I do like the positioning of this but it felt as if there was something missing from the bottom left poster.

Window posters These are 2 ideas I have to catch the attention of students for window display posters. The reasons I like these are for the simplicity and image used to create that movement feel. The things I would change on this top image in probably the shadow created, the are both different. Also for the bottom image if I had the chance I would change the colour of the text brighter but for this image i think it works will because it is the same colour as the Gap logo.
