NOW IT SHALL SPRING FORTH
2021
Positioned
FOR PROMISE Grace and peace to each of you in the Name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! First, Lady Brooks and I offer our warmest love and greetings to you, and wish you all a Happy New Year. What a year it has been. I usually take time toward the end of the year to reflect upon all that has happened in the twelve months prior and to refocus for the future. As I said moments ago, what a year it has been, indeed. Even before my administration started as Presiding Bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc., the Lord impressed upon me the theme that would guide us as a Body for its entirety: “Now It Shall Spring Forth”. God told us all throughout 2019, “Behold I shall do a new thing”. But who would have ever known just how new certain things would be! God promised us revival and renewal--who would have thought that the Lord would allow the normalities of the world to come to a screeching halt in order to bring us to a place of revival. But He did. And in 2020, we declared “Now It Shall Spring Forth: God’s Promise to Perform”. We looked to and found hope in the promises of the Lord and His performance of each of them in our lives. My brothers and
sisters, indeed God did perform in 2020--even in ways that were totally unexpected. His Hand moved upon the earth and we are experiencing what many scientists are calling a once-in-a-century pandemic. We canceled our in-person gatherings for almost all of 2020, including our Spring Executive Bishops’ meeting and the 105th International Summer Convention. Not since 1917 has the PAW canceled a Summer Convention. Though it was the hard decision, for the safety and health of each of us, I do believe it was the right one. Please know, I am so proud of each of our Bishops, pastors, leaders and members who have risen to the challenge and transitioned to virtual worship services, auxiliary events and councils throughout 2020. Through your diligence and willingness to work through difficult times, the PAW has responded to community needs by offering food drives and economic support, social unrest through prayer and peaceful protest, renewed civic engagement, and more prayer than perhaps ever before. The PAW has been blessed with an amazing team of individuals who organized and produced our first ever Virtual Convention--and boy was it an awesome time of Word, worship and growth. Our auxiliaries hosted a series of Virtual Convention events
in alignment with the main Virtual Convention, and we managed to stay connected with our spiritual families near and far. Above all else, 2020 has renewed for many--including myself--the importance of prayer as the foundation of everything we do, we say, and how we live. In a world of uncertainty and cure-seeking for an invisible enemy against our bodies, prayer has been the shield of protection for our souls. We have grown as an organization through prayer. We have sought the Face of God and not just His Hand. We have sought His Voice to comfort, sought His Mind to guide, and sought His Will for the future of our world. Yes, we sought His Hand for healing and resources in a time when those seemed scarce. But we have hope in an eternal healing that is beyond this earthly realm. Prayer has been our guiding light, and it is by prayer that we will continue into this new year and in the years to come. This year, the Lord affirmed to me the need for us as an organization to continue with “Now It Shall Spring Forth” with the 2021 sub-theme of “Positioned for Promise”. When we declared “Now It Shall Spring Forth” over our lives these last two years, we did it with the hope and expectation that God would do a new thing in our lives, communities, churches, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. We looked for the Lord to move mightily and bring about a new wind of spiritual revival across the earth. We looked for new souls, new resources, new ideas, new visions and new opportunities. And He did those things. He is still doing those things. This pandemic has shifted our idea of “new”. And yet, God has been true to His Word. He has indeed done a new thing on this earth--shall we not know it? For 2021, the Lord is charging each of us to be “Positioned for Promise”. What does that mean? We must set our hearts, minds and activities toward that which the Lord said He would do. Being Positioned for Promise means that we are in a place to receive all that God has for us, and we are ready to handle what “new thing” He has in store for us. No, we cannot be ready for all things. Indeed, whoever would have expected a pandemic? However, we can get our hearts in posture so that we are not overtaken or overwhelmed by what may come next. The Lord is calling on us to be ready to walk out each vision and idea He has given His people, to make use of every resource He makes available, and to take advantage of every opportunity He places before us. However, that requires us to be Positioned for Promise. It requires effort on our part to be ready for the blessings and favor of God to come upon our lives. Promise requires preparation and positioning. We know He will do new things in our lives. Now it is our turn to be ready for them. The Lord often charged individuals to prepare to receive the promises He made toward them. In 2 Kings 4, Elisha instructed the widow woman to gather as many pots as
she could from friends, neighbors, whomever. She was to then shut herself and her son in the house and pour oil from her small jar until each pot was full. Her preparation was in gathering as many vessels as she could, and the promise was that she wouldn’t run out until she had nothing more to fill. In Luke 24, Jesus gave His disciples a promise from God for the Holy Ghost. However, their preparation was to be in place in Jerusalem, in position, together until they would receive it. In both these instances, God gave instruction to guide preparation and positioning so that the promise would be received. My brothers and sisters, this year I want each of us to be intentional about how we prepare our hearts, minds, souls, spaces and places to receive each promise from God. I want us to be intentional about cultivating those parts of our lives that are not in position, and following the voice of God in preparation. We must be Positioned for Promise, so that as God does His new thing we shall indeed know--and be ready--for it. Lady Brooks and I love you to life and we are praying for you. We have not forgotten those whose lives have forever been changed through loss, and we are praying that the Lord continues to send His comfort, peace and strength to you and your families. We love you so much and long for the day we can see your faces once again at a Convention in the future. What a high time in the Lord that will be. For now, all in-person meetings for 2021, including Summer Conventions and councils, will be canceled and shifted to virtual meetings. So, until the day we can gather together again, stay strong in the Lord. Lean on Him, and He will strengthen you. And I challenge you for 2021: be “Positioned for Promise”. The Master’s Servant, Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr. Presiding Bishop

FROM THE EDITOR Evangelist Neechy Dumas
We are extremely grateful to the many readers, individual subscribers and the ministries that carry a yearly subscription of The Christian Outlook magazine.Thank you for your unwavering patience as we continue to navigate the effects that COVID-19 has had on our world. Please know that we are consistently and aggressively working behind the scenes to deliver a timely and impactful magazine to our delegates and beyond.
A
s always, we salute our distinguished leader, Presiding Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr., for his renowned leadership during these unprecedented times. His commitment and dedication to engage our organization has helped many and has proven to be fruitful, yet comes with great sacrifice. May we all continue to hold up the arms of our leader, as he continues to fight the good fight of faith, as Aaron and Hur assisted Moses when his hands became heavy (Exodus 17:12). Thank you to our cover designer of this issue, Dawne Hill, who so graciously captured the sentiments of the new vision for this year from our Presider. And, to this amazing Publications and Christian Outlook team, who continues to serve so graciously on a daily basis, indeed, I say thank you. In the coming months, we look to continue to share the stories and testimonies of those within this great organization, gain an understanding of real world issues that affect us all, and to become a source of encouragement to those who need hope. In this 2021 first edition of the Christian Outlook -- it is my prayer that you will be reminded that you are not alone, God is in the storm with you from Dr. Karen Roland Douglass, Psy.D, that you’ll take steps from Pastor Jarrett L. Perdue, Jr. on being a balanced leader, that you’ll see how a dynamic woman made a global impact with Suffragan Bishop Ann Story Pratt and that we’ll be reminded of the safety in prayer with Pastor Caleb Kirksey.

As we look forward to what the coming year will bring, let us always be mindful to forget what is behind and press toward the amazing future that God has in store for each of us. LEADERSHIP
WHY LEADERS
MUST FIRST
FOLLOW By Bishop Marion E. Wright, Sr., PhD
“To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:” - Titus 1:4, 5 KJV
I
n Titus 1:5, Paul reminds Titus that he left him in Crete to “…set in order things that are lacking…” He also reminds him to “…appoint elders [ministers—leaders] in every city…” There is a profound revelation in this verse. This is leadership operating at its premium. Paul is arranging to impact and transform an entire nation by affecting every city, town, and village. Leadership is key to church growth. God qualifies leaders as to their character, family life, spiritual service, doctrinal experience, and to their ability to deliver the Word of God. However, Paul believed that while these quality traits were essential, these were not the most important ones. Paul says the first quality of the leader is that he or she must have a good reputation in the marketplace and in the community. He or she is a person who lives with integrity, who pays their bills, and who commands respect by a life well lived. Likewise, God gives each Pastor a vision for the church, accompanied by faith, management skills, people skills, team-building skills, and decision-making skills. The quality of our leadership is directly proportionate to the quality of our followership. My effectiveness as a leader lies in the fact that I myself also have a leader and can be led. Obedience equals effectiveness! Our capacity as leaders is determined by our capacity to serve. The leader serves not just God but people.
10
THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
After 51 years of preaching and 39 years of Pastoral ministry, I have learned that when one submits to authority, one becomes empowered. Therefore, I have listed what I call “Logistical Plans for Pastoral Leadership.” From this prayerfully and carefully thought out plan, you should know that the follower-leader is easily discoverable in three callings: servant, soldier and son. These three traits are obvious in great leaders and painfully absent in unsuccessful leaders. Start with the name of your church: making sure that your church name is biblically sound. Then write the Mission Statement, which should clearly state the reason for your existence and what you are commissioned to do as a church. Then as Habakkuk 2:2-4 states: “…Write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry… but the just shall live by his faith.” Remember, God said “Make it [the vision] plain” or easily understood by all.
Mission Statement To present Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior to lost souls, baptizing them in His Name, that they may be filled with the Holy Ghost; making disciples of them, bringing them into fellowship with the Father, teaching them to observe all things that Jesus Christ said by Word, the Prophets and the Apostles; that they may instruct others in the faith that was once and for all delivered unto the saints.
“POSITIONED FOR PROMISE”
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021
Logistical Plan A. The Pastor is the most significant one in the organized Church because he or she represents the link between God and the congregation. Much respect and prayers should be given in the Pastor’s behalf. Teach others to follow leadership. The Pastor leads the congregation into prayer and fasting for revelation of God’s will for the church and the total, whole-hearted acceptance of the New Vision. Pray about the changes for the ministry, in order to fulfill God’s ultimate purpose for the sacrifice of HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD. B. The Pastor then, should reveal the New Vision for the Church given by God as a result of prayer and fasting. It is the Pastor’s responsibility to lead the congregation into God’s Divine will, giving definition to every problem that necessitates a change in order to meet the needs of the people and bring them to the fullness of God. Share the vision with the influential leaders of the congregation first. Their support will be needed in order to thoroughly saturate the congregation with the New Vision. C. The Pastor must use his or her apostolic authority by divine appointment and teach sound doctrine, giving scriptural proof of the reason for each change that is made, taking care not to damage or injure the believer’s faith in the finished work of Christ at Calvary. The believer should not be forced to accept the changes set forth by the Pastor, but rather be convicted by the force of the scriptures and the power of the Holy Ghost. The Pastor must use his or her skills at rightly dividing the WORD of Truth and explain with great detail, using a plethora of scriptures, illustrations, parables, roll-playing, storytelling, dramas, various visual aids, etc. Patience is the key to a successful transition. D. The Pastor must emphasize repetitively that the New Vision is not the Pastor’s but God’s. Instructing God’s people is the primary responsibility of the Pastor. Therefore, teaching the congregation to observe all things is absolutely crucial to the success of this transition. The change should be personal. First, there should be a change in their concept of worship. How the congregation worships and the intensity and sincerity of the worship will be the first notable difference, which will indicate God’s approval to the New Vision. God must show up in the worship service. Any spiritual change should lead people closer to God and the fulfillment of HIS
will. The Pastor must point out the dynamic move of the Holy Spirit, making the congregation aware of the presence of God. Second, miracles will happen by the hands of the Pastor and those who serve faithfully under his or her anointing. Teach with authority, develop and train leaders; develop strong choirs and demand excellence of your musical staff. Cooperation, love, fellowship and unity is essential. E. The Pastor must stress the need for dedicated disciples. Attendance to every service must be required of all members. When they show up for service, at least three things should be fresh on their minds: (1) Their renewed mind (righteousness consciousness) and reason for being present; (2) The soul that they brought with them; and (3) What they will render unto the Lord today. The Pastor must compel them to become soul conscious. “When thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.” Salvation of souls and making disciples is the reason for our existence as a church. F. The Pastor should then encourage and admonish the congregation to become family focused. The Church is called the family of God because it is the church that is “called out” to do the will of the FATHER. We are HIS children and should behave as such. The Biblical approach to relationships should be taught in the church and subsequently, at home. G. The Pastor must then turn his or her attention to the support for the vision that the entire congregation has accepted. Because of their obedience to the Word of God, the New Vision is now their vision by the conviction of the Holy Ghost. They are disciples and are compelled to love God, one another and the ministry. Every time they show up for worship they should think “sacrifice.” Discipleship is synonymous with sacrifice of one’s self first, and then substance and possessions. The Pastor must not be intimidated by the untoward, cynical mentality of poverty, which is satan’s diabolical plan to hinder the work of God. Teach the congregation God’s way of blessing HIS people by their obedience to His word and purpose. Giving tithes and offerings is just the beginning of our service and dedication to God for HIS abundant grace which abound toward us. Giving should be done as an act of obedience rather than fear of damnation for noncompliance. Develop a strong financial base and a responsible accounting system. Find out from other ministries how they report to the saints.

M
y life is an amazing story of 55-years of leadership, ministry, and devotion to my family. I was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina, but raised in trendy Harlem, New York. At an early age, I was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and a brain tumor. The evening before surgery, the late Bishop Lenora Smith prayed for me. The next day, I arose only to see the fluid from the tumor on my bed covers, the swelling was gone, and I was able to see! I vowed from that day forward to declare the Word of God to all the world. After being healed, the Lord made me a catalysis for global deliverance ministries. By 18, I was preaching on the national circuit as a full-time evangelist. I served as an ordained national evangelist and assistant missionary president for over 15 years at the Deliverance Evangelistic Center, Inc., in Brooklyn, New York, under the tutelage of Apostle Arturo Skinner. Many women were hesitant to work in various

prison ministries and brewery districts, but not me. The Holy Ghost helped me to minister throughout the five boroughs of New York, including the Rockefeller Institute for Girls. When God’s mandate guides you and His favor is resting on your life, you cannot afford to be intimidated by the environmental surroundings of your assignment. That message continues to be the guiding philosophy of everything I do for my Lord and Savior. I was blessed to be one of three, including Bishop Ronald E. Brown and Evangelist Levi Wilson, that traveled extensively, working with start-up ministries and spreading “The Good News” throughout the U.S., Europe, Haiti, Jamaica, Antigua, Barbados, and the Bahamas. We ministered to the wealthy, affluent, poor, and uneducated. The presence of God permeated every atmosphere where we ministered! We worked hard, prayed long, and enjoyed living for God. In the late ‘70s, Bishop T.D. Jakes
“POSITIONED FOR PROMISE”
came to Bluefield, West Virginia, to hear me preach after Bishop Clarence E. Moore told him that I was coming. After meeting Bishop Jakes, we developed a friendship that has lasted until this day. The Lord continues to expand my ministry through interdenominational fellowship. I have become well known for “deliverance” ministry, revivals, street meetings, and tent revivals. God directed me to minister extensively in California: Los Angeles, San Diego, Berkley, Sacramento, Fresno, and Oakland; also, in Texas and New Jersey, assisting in the councils. In Los Angeles, California, I preached two-week tent revivals under Bishop R.W. McMurray. While in L.A., I recorded my first preaching album, “Don’t Wreck the Ship!” God was shaping me as a national and global leader. As a woman of God, I was always mindful of my responsibilities to the church, ministry, sisterhood, and
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021
most importantly, to God. During the ’50s and through the ’70s, women were not well accepted in the ministry; however, I was incredibly blessed to break barriers and shatter glass ceilings for many women. The Lord used me to mentor young women going into ministries such as Bishop Dr. Carolyn Showell, Dr. Jeanne Porter-King, and many others. I mentored men and women. Those beautiful people of God have invited me to minister to their congregations. God is a wonder! As word of my ministerial style spread, the Lord increased my travels to hundreds of cities and numerous countries. During my travels, I would often stay in the pastors’ homes. The wives would prepare the meals and dinners while the pastor worked. Rarely did I lodge in motels and hotels. Although I am a globally recognized ecclesiastical leader, I have never requested a financial contract, specified an offering, or demanded to stay in a five-star hotel. I developed a level of respect, confidentiality, and longlasting relationships with many pastors, their wives, their children, and their extended families. I have been given a standing invitation to return yearly to minister to God’s people at many churches. Never have I felt the need to defend the fact God called me to preach and teach. Throughout my intercontinental travels, God favored me. My integrity in God has made it possible to revisit churches all over the world! I have many vivid memories of my international experiences. I remember
THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
conducting a tent meeting for the late District Elder Black and Bishop Ronald Young, who served in the pastorate of Grace Church in one of the worse areas in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Individual residents often destroyed the tents; however, God showed favor, and they did not destroy them. God’s mercy further abounded by placing it in the hearts of the residents in that area to allow us to use their utilities during the tent revival! On another occasion, while teaching and preaching in Fayetteville, North Carolina, I slept on a cot. The room was damp, cold, and infested with snails. I laugh now when thinking about it; I placed salt around the cot to keep the snails from getting on me. I knew the Lord was with me. Therefore, I used my coat as a covering and rested peacefully! In Trinidad, while sleeping under a black mosquito net, a large bat came into the room. If the devil could not stop me, a bat sure wasn’t going to prevent me from doing God’s work! I kept traveling throughout the country. While ministering in Detroit at Greater Grace Temple with the late Bishop David Ellis, a woman came in and accepted Christ; the same woman earlier planned to kill her partner. After she was baptized, I accompanied the woman to her house, she gave me the shotgun, and I left the gun with Bishop Hoke. Kevin Harrison came to that same meeting with his aunt because she had asked him to attend. He was a drug dealer and a gang banger, but that night he gave his life to Christ, and today he is a bishop. I have numerous testimonials of God

saving souls and doing miraculous things under my ministry. I was blessed to attend the Manhattan Bible Institute. I was awarded an honorary Doctorate from Grace Apostolic University. I also received non-theological recognition, including certifications in educational leadership from Yale University and leadership development training from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. I was blessed to serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Springfield Academy of Excellence, the first charter school in the City of Springfield! I am also the founder and administrator of Precious Gifts Daycare and Learning Center, a state and federally certified, Black-owned, and operated daycare and Headstart program in Clark County, Ohio. Currently, I pastor the Church of Jesus Family Worship Center in Springfield, Ohio. I lead this excellent work after my honorable husband, Bishop Cecil A. Pratt, passed. God favored me to continue the pastoral work that has spanned five decades. In 2018, I was elected as Assistant General Secretary and Lay-Director for the Central District of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc., during the summer convention. And glory to God, my life’s work in the ministry was further recognized in July 2017 when I was consecrated and elevated to the position of Suffragan Bishop by the Ohio District Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc.

he Convention Evangelism and Outreach Services (CEOS), Department’s International purpose is to go into all the world to reach souls for Christ Jesus; teach souls about the ways of God; preach to souls the word of God; bind up the brokenhearted; Set at liberty those who are bound; speak deliverance, peace, hope, joy, and faith to all mankind; and offer salvation according to the word of God: repentance, water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the infilling of the gift of the Holy Ghost according to the Holy Writ as stated in the book of Acts. We join forces from all over the world during our convention to perform these duties in “that” city. As shown in our Pre-Pandemic pictures, we are about our Father’s business. “Word In Action!” Serving the community in Cincinnati, OH. service where Pastor Joel Urshan was our guest speaker. Many souls same to the Lord. Our brothers are pictured joining with the Greater Grace Detroit, MI, family serving food to the community. And again our brothers are shown baptizing souls from the men’s shelter! “IT’S ALL ABOUT SOULS!”-is more than just our tagline (given to us by SB Lavelton Daniel), but it is our heartfelt demeanor, our way of life. So naturally we continue our duties even during this world wide Pandemic.

PANDEMIC EVANGELISM: WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?
CONTINUING THE GREAT COMMISSION OF EVANGELISM AND OUTREACH By Evangelist Ruth Belnavis on behalf of the CEOS Charlotte, North Carolina
T
here are many areas of employment within the Kingdom of God to work. Though we are allowed to work in various areas, we are all employed to work within the Department of Reconciliation. Our purpose is to rejoin souls to their creator, the Lord God Almighty! How do we effectively continue evangelism in the midst of a Pandemic? Pulpit evangelism has taken a big hit; inviting people to church to hear our pastor’s sermon is not popular during this COVID-19 pandemic. Evangelism as we know it, has taken on a different light; some have even said, “The Church is Closed!” Are we? Are YOU shut down? Closed for ministry? God forbid! Our church address is now our website address; instead of linking up with someone to drive them to our church building, we are instead sharing links to our Facebook and Youtube accounts: “Join our Live Stream”, or “Watch our Premiere video” have become our new verbiage. Some are stumped as to which direction to go, but rather than think ourselves limited in our evangelism, let’s think of it as a shift…a shift toward the inevitable, 21st century technology wave: a new day, a new way. While many are taking to Facebook Live and Zoom meetings to get the Word out, some are also continuing traditional methods of outreach. We need to seek ways, outside of social media, to be social, while still maintaining social distance. Right now, during this pandemic, the importance of meeting needs in outreach has increased as a precursor to evangelism. We often use the terms evangelism and outreach, interchangeably; however, there is a distinct difference. Evangelism is sharing the “Good News” that is found in the Word of God. It can be shared as the “Gospel of Salvation” written in Ephesians 1:13, the “Gospel of the Kingdom” in Matthew 4:23, or the wonderful “Gospel of the Grace of God” talked about in Acts 20:24….with many more to mention. We understand the importance of sharing the undebatable truths of God’s Word in order for men’s hearts to be pricked.
THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
In the same vein, this is a time when one’s physical needs must also be met: hence, “outreach.” Outreach is exactly what it says; it’s reaching out to those in need with substance and not just words. This includes the distribution of food, shelter, clothing, etc. This is an opportunity to show we really care and show humanity. In addition to the great loss due to this pandemic, many are losing hope and do not know what to do. Suicide is increasing, child abuse is on the rise, the number of divorces and domestic violence are at an all-time high, even within the church. This is not the time to retreat; BUT how do we safely reach them? With so much technology available now, we are able to do more, and must do more. Where you would normally meet maybe two or three times in a week, we now have the opportunity to do multiple, daily interactions. We can also increase listeners by joining groups and sharing our live and premiere videos. We must take true hold to Matthew 5:16. By allowing our light to shine before men, we make the love of God more evident in the midst of this pandemic. Many believe that God exists, but it is our duty to manifest the love and grace of God through our actions, that He may be illuminated. As light does in a dark place, it enables us to see more clearly. Engage within your community. Continue to establish relationships with neighbors. Be willing to create avenues and navigate new paths to reach a diverse population while still maintaining safety. Perhaps become a COVID-19 test location or a food distribution center, all while still holding drive-through prayers and sharing literature, marked with your livestream information, etc. Where do you live? Where do you work? Where do you frequently visit? These are YOUR areas of deployment. Continue the mission of reaching and impacting souls. Pandemic Evangelism…Mission Possible!

PRAYER
PRAYER:
THE RIGHT TO
REQUEST
O
By Pastor Caleb Kirksey
ne of the most powerful forces on the planet is prayer. It is as vital as water and as destructive as fire. It is stronger than the fiercest winds and more dangerous than any earthquake. Prayer is a supernatural tool that can build up as well as tear down. It is a force to be reckoned with. Although, its source of power cannot be seen nor touched, its effects are certainly visible. From the provision of daily necessities, to healing of diseases; from financial blessings, to the return of a wayward child and more; all these things can be the results of prayer. There is no limit to its power and effectiveness in the earth. At its core, prayer is simply communication with God. However, it is not just communication that makes prayer most interesting. It is who we are communicating with that makes it truly worthwhile. On the other end of our prayers is the almighty God himself, patiently listening to our words. To have the ability to talk with someone of this caliber is one of the greatest privileges we will ever have in life. For, it is God who makes our prayers effective. He is the force behind them. Otherwise, without his involvement they are empty. Therefore, prayer should never be taken lightly. In addition to the power behind prayer, the true privilege lies in the actions we take in prayer. We do not just have the access to speak to God, but we have the permission to ‘request’ his assistance. In the dictionary, the word ‘prayer’ or ‘pray’ includes many descriptive words such as: supplication, entreat, invocation, implore, petition and others. A common theme among these words is the
THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
concept of ‘asking’ or ‘requesting’. This suggests that the most powerful aspect of prayer is the ability to make requests of God. It is wonderful to know the Lord allows His people to ask favors of Him. In fact, he encourages it. The Bible makes this clear. Philippians 4:6 encourages us to make our ‘requests’ known unto God by prayer (petition) and supplication (humble requests). Matthew 7:7 says, ‘Ask’ and it shall be given you…” In John 14:14, Jesus says, “If ye shall ‘ask’ anything in my name, I will do it.” He even urges the disciples to make requests in prayer when He teaches them how to pray. In Matthew 6:11-13, He commands that they should ask God to supply daily bread, forgive sins, lead them away from temptation, and to deliver them from evil. Last, but not least, In the parable of the woman and the unjust judge, Jesus suggests that like the judge, God will avenge His people who continually cry day and night unto Him. All throughout the scriptures, many miracles were done upon requests of God’s divine intervention. This recurring theme is no mistake or coincidence. God delights in answering the petitions of His beloved Saints if it coincides with His will and brings Him glory. This is the true power of prayer; our ability to ask and God’s pleasure in answering. So, ask away. Ask in faith. Do not put a limit on your requests. Try God in prayer and witness his ability to perform. For countless lives have been spared from danger, abundant resources released, bodies healed, verdicts overturned, and many other things have occurred all because God answered someone’s fervent prayer.

PREACHER’S COVER STORY CORNER
Leadership W By Pastor Jarrett L. Perdue, Jr.
hen it comes to leadership, it is important that the emphasis be placed on self leadership first. It will be difficult, and perhaps even impossible, to lead others well, and not yourself. Notice, I did not say it is impossible to lead others; the key word is, well. One of the keys to great leadership is how one leads himself/herself. I know that leadership is attractive when you see the impact it can have on people, places and things; however, the goal is not to find a crowd to jump in front of to lead. The objective is to find a cause. It is your “cause” that will lead you to your “why” in leadership. Your purpose will help to direct your disciplines. Purpose will give you parameters so that you can perform/lead well. Self leadership and self discipline go together. Before you operate in the functions of who you will lead, you must discover how you will lead yourself. How do you lead yourself when you’re disappointed or upset? How do you lead yourself when you’re tired or tempted? Define your self leadership when resources are low. How do you lead yourself with success? These are just a few things to consider because they will influence how you lead others. Self leadership has given me the opportunity to lead others in various areas in my career and in ministry. I am a servant leader. That means I serve people in my role while having the authority and responsibility to handle them appropriately. This is important because leading people will come with all sorts of personalities. I know you didn’t think you would only lead one personality type, did you? It’s interesting to note that even Jesus didn’t get to lead one personality type. Consider the difference between John and Judas. Look at the dichotomy of Peter and Matthew. Jesus still had the ability to serve them all because He had self leadership. Jesus understood His cause! “The Spirit of the Lord

is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised”. (Luke 4:18) Knowing our cause in leadership is a component of keeping us balanced. Leaders have a tendency to want to solve problems. If we live an unbalanced life, we’ll find ourselves trying to solve ALL the problems. Let me remind you, Leader, you’re only responsible for your “why,” not the world. Balance in leadership will help you to know when and where to lead. One of the things I had to learn was defining what’s connected to my cause. I must admit, there have been times when I have been intoxicated with being needed to lead. Not realizing that it wasn’t necessary for me to. I was measuring my leadership by my acts. The busier the better. I needed to be doing something all the time. Like a lot of you, I was born and raised in the church. So that means as far back as I can remember, I’ve been working in some capacity in the church. From serving in the kitchen to serving on the altar. You name it and I have probably done it. I believe this is where I connected being busy and leading as one. The problem with that began to unfold as my life and responsibilities increased. I had a family and ministry leadership. I was so focused on being busy in church and accomplishing goals that I didn’t realize it had consumed my life. I’m flying in and out four times a week. I was the President of the IPYPU. I’m on conference calls several times a week. I’m planning and preparing for three major events a year. Then, on top of that, I planted a church and started pastoring. This does not include all of the other unnecessary things I thought I needed to do. I had heard stories of pastors saying they

regret missing out on family moments because of being busy with church. I would always say to myself, that will never be me. Jarrett, “thou art the man”. That revelation helped me to understand that I needed to make some intentional changes. I had to clearly define my cause. I have a loving, supportive wife and children. They never asked me to choose them over ministry. They were looking for me to be balanced. They wanted to be a part of what I was doing in ministry. But, they also needed me to be a part of what was happening in their lives. Things were definitely not fair towards them. When it came to my ministry leadership, they were all supportive; however, when it came to them, I thought they understood the demand(s) in my life. “So, I probably won’t make it this time” is what I often said. The wisdom of my wife helped me to see that I was exerting time and energy towards some things not in line with my purpose. She was also able to point out that some of those things were the reason for my frustration. If I were to keep up with my purposeful demands, I needed to become familiar with words like “no,” “not necessary,” “not now” and “someone else can do it.”
“
Balanced leadership is a journey, not a destination.
”
All throughout the scriptures you find different types of leaders. One leader I enjoy studying is Nehemiah. He said some powerful words that I believe can help us stay balanced. “Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me,” Nehemiah 2:18). He was not describing what he was good at. He’s articulating where God’s hand was concerning his purpose. I only want to function where God’s hand is good upon me. If I continue to try to do everything that I’m simply good

at, I will experience an unstable, unsteady life. Notice it was Nehemiah’s cause that directed him to his crowd. There is so much wisdom in knowing your “why.” You become clear on who your audience is and now you can better serve them. This may be a hard pill to swallow for some people, but allow me to remind you of this truth. You’re not for everybody! I know you are gifted, charismatic and anointed as a leader, but please know you have an audience. A specific audience! As I learned about this, it helped me to focus my time, energy and finances in the appropriate direction. My family no longer had to compete for my time. Why, you ask? Because they’re connected to the people I serve as a leader. My home was not just the place that I returned to after serving others. I had to learn that being a pastor, traveling preacher or a president were not the only areas that I serve. I also serve as a husband, father, son, brother etc., with my family. I am constantly evolving as a leader. I do not think that I have arrived, but I am certainly more aware. Living a balanced life in ministry will ultimately bless your life. It will remove the chaos of being busy and give you more control to deal with the demands in your life. Jesus said, “My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me and to finish His work,” John 4:34. He understood exactly what He was to do. His life was balanced and His focus was precise. My prayer is that we know our cause and our crowd. Those are the people we are called to lead. Balanced leadership is a journey, not a destination. This year has taught us that life will bring huge adjustments. Balance will help you to maintain effective leadership and decision making through them all. I pray that you always be found walking in love, power and a sound mind, (2 Timothy 1:7), as you lead the people you’ve been called to, for such a time as this.

As such, they have buoyed candidates of many racial identities, including the first White woman to reach the top of the ticket in 2016—more than 90% of Black women were said to have voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Although a woman has made it on the presidential ticket for the general election, a Black woman has yet to win the Democratic Party’s nomination for president. But that doesn’t mean several haven’t tried, with varying degrees of success.

She announced her campaign for the presidency at the beginning of 2019 with a platform centered around support for low-income demographics, debt-free higher education, and universal healthcare. In December 2019, she announced the end of her campaign, explaining that funding was insufficient to continue. In 2020, Harris became the running mate of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. She was the first Black and first South Asian American vice-presidential candidate nominated by a major party, and, with the ticket’s win in the 2020 general election, became the first vice president who was a woman.

wo elements contributed to the era that could be called the “era of Bishop-making”: (1) the attempt by the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World to maintain an official racial balance; (2) a resolution adopted in the General Convention of 1934 that “the Bishops be added to per ratio of members.” It was at this convention that two Bishops were added as per two hundred members. As Elder Akers was elevated to the Bishopric, Elder Robert F. Tobin was elected to the office of General Secretary, which office he held until his demise in 1947. Whenever there was a Negro elevated to the Bishopric, there was also a Caucasian elevated. Actually, racially, from the time of the “great schism” in Chicago, the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World has been largely Negroid, and the concept of racial-balance was a myth everywhere else but on the official roster. It is very doubtful if the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World had a dozen Caucasian churches in 1934, but the building of the official roster continued with rapid pace;

sometimes without the men elevated having a Diocese. The original plan called for “territories being formed preceding the election of new Bishops” (page 10-Minute Book, 1934). But once the floodgates were opened, Bishops were and have been made indiscriminately: for faithful services to the organization, as honorarium, as fulfilling the request of a Diocesan. At this convention, Sister Oneida Clark was elected to be Secretary of the Home Missionary Department. Bishop E. F. Akers was chosen to be the Chairman of the auxiliary. The Pentecostal Young People’s Union, (P.Y.P.U.) was given Tuesday afternoon at the close of the Sunday School Association session until the hour of 8:45 p.m., at which time they were to surrender to the Parent Body for the lifting of the offering, and the preaching of the Word of God.

It was at this convention that the Senior Bishop of the Apostolic Overcoming Holiness Church, the Bishop W. T. Phillips of Mobile, Alabama, visited the General Conference to see how we did and examine our policies. It was said that there was the faith hope of a merger; but if there was the hope, it faded quickly. Bishop Phillips was received graciously and ministered to the General Conference while in attendance.
1935 The General Convention met in Indianapolis, Indiana, August 26-30. Sister Marian Lockridge was the recording secretary for this convention as well as the assistant to the General Secretary. This very fine Christian woman gave many years of faithful service to the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, serving under Bishop G. T. Haywood, Elders K. F. Smith, E. F. Akers, and R. F. Tobin. A piece of legislation affecting the office of a Bishop originated in the convention: That the nominees for the Bishopric hereafter come from the District Elders, and other executives, and prior to their election their eligibility shall be passed upon by the Board of Bishops. Because of his health, Bishop A. William Lewis was placed on “honorary status” as a Bishop. (His life seemed to hang in the balance for many years, between life and death. At this writing, while advanced in years, Bishop Lewis remains with us, enjoying health and happiness.) The Eastern District Council asked for the re-election of Bishop Grimes as the Bishop of the Eastern District. 1. Elder Charles Hutchins, Chicago, Illinois 2. Elder F. L Clark, Warren, Ohio 3. Elder E. L. Jackson, Terre Haute, Indiana 4. Elder David Schultz, Louisville, Kentucky 5. Bishop F. I. Douglas, Los Angeles, California 6. Elder Bernie Nelson, Red Wing, Minnesota 7. Elder William Martin, Dayton, Ohio 8. Bishop Samuel Grimes, New York, New York Bishop Samuel Grimes, and F. I Douglas were re-elected by acclamation. There was a motion that prevailed that “the Bishops be voted on by number, voting five at a time.” With the re-electing of Bishops Grimes and Douglas, the names of Elders Clark Nelson, and Martin (all White) were submitted for election. Elders Martin and Nelson were elected to the Bishopric. Because of the number of votes given Elder Clark as a nominee for the Bishopric, he was added to the panel of Bishops. However, this action was rescinded by a later motion. Elders Jackson, Hutchins, and Schultz (Negro) were still in the race for the Bishopric. Of them, Elder Schultz was elected.

WHENEVER THERE WAS A NEGRO ELEVATED TO THE BISHOPRIC, THERE WAS ALSO A CAUCASIAN ELEVATED... RACIALLY, FROM THE TIME OF THE ‘GREAT SCHISM’ IN CHICAGO, THE PENTECOSTAL ASSEMBLIES OF THE WORLD HAS BEEN LARGELY NEGROID, AND... The rapidity of men being added to the roster of Bishops can be seen. In 1932, at the reorganizing of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, there were three Bishops (Douglas, Grimes, and Lewis). By the end of 1936, the names of Martin, Nelson, Barnett, Akers, Schultz, and Clark (regretfully Martin and Akers names were dropped in 1936) had been added to the list; new districts had to be developed hastily to meet the growing list of executives. In four years, the roster grew to seven Bishops, which was the number of the original panel during the Haywood administration. The General Conference suffered a great loss during its setting in Chicago. At the close of the National Sunday School Association, while the conference was standing for its opening prayer on Tuesday afternoon, Brother Edward F. King “slumped to sweet repose in the arms of Jesus.” More will be said about this dedicated worker in the chapter dealing with the National Sunday School Association.

The late Honorable Bishop Morris E. Golder was elevated to the Bishopric on August 1972. He was the proud founder and pastor of Grace Apostolic Church, Indianapolis, Indiana. Bishop Golder was the author of many books, one being the “History of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc.” in 1973. In an effort to maintain the authenticity of this historic work, in reprinting for this publication, the original language was kept.

IN LOVING MEMORY
Bishop William A. Ellis
S
1942 - 2020
uch was the passing of The Honorable Bishop William A. Ellis, D.D., who took his earthly leave Saturday, November 14, 2020. He was the last of thirteen children born to the late Elder Charles and Lucille Ellis on Saturday, September 18, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois. During his formative years, he was educated in the Chicago Public Schools. Little Willie experienced “the new birth” on January 8, 1950, at the age of seven under the pastorate of his father, the late Elder Charles Ellis. His father was the founding pastor of the Indiana Avenue Pentecostal Church of God, which is affectionately known as “35th Street,” until the Lord called him home in 1953. After his father’s unexpected death, William being the youngest child, stayed home to care for his mother until her death. Supported by all his siblings, he especially
cherished the spiritual guidance of his beloved brother, confidant and best friend, Bishop David L. Ellis, the late pastor of Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, Michigan. In 1962, at the tender age of twenty, he officially accepted the call to ministry. Then in October of 1963, he received his initial ministerial license from the Illinois District Council where the late Bishop John S. Holly was Diocesan. On June 29, 1963, he was joined together in a blissful marriage that lasted nearly 50 years to Sister Mary Pope Wilkins of Chicago, Illinois. This union continued and produced four sons and eight grandchildren until Mother Mary P. Ellis transitioned into the portals of Glory on December 10, 2012. Later, he was ordained at the 1968 Convention of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World in Los Angeles, California.
That same year, the Lord directed Elder Ellis to San Antonio, Texas, to pastor the Lincoln Park Church of Christ. Knowing God’s hand was upon his life, he and Sister Ellis packed up their family and in January embarked on a historic trip to their new home in Texas. God was indeed faithful to His word. Under his dynamic leadership, the church membership increased to over 600 active members. It was there he became a “Pentecostal Trailblazer.” At that time, for seven years, Elder Ellis was the first pastor in the area to schedule a weekly church service on television. During the 80’s and 90’s, the Greater Lincoln Park Temple was rated the top ten of all the exhibitors at the National Broadcast Convention and reached thousands of listeners weekly. These telecasts and broadcasts were inspired of the Holy Ghost under the leadership of Pastor William Ellis.

He also served on many civic boards. His integrity and notoriety in the community and in government led him to appointments in areas such as: Utah Street Development, honorary member of the San Antonio Independent School Board and an appointment to the Fireman and Police Civil Service Commission. He also served as Chaplain of the San Antonio Police Department, and championed many other benevolent causes.
the office of Diocesan Bishop of the 15th Episcopal Diocese (Mountain States) of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. As a dedicated and progressive Chairman serving two terms of the Texas State Council, he became the Diocesan Bishop of the 13th Episcopal Diocese. Furthermore, while in Texas, the Guadalupe Theological Seminary in San Antonio bestowed upon him the Doctor of Divinity Degree.
Once again, the Lord spoke to District Elder Ellis and commissioned him to relocate to a larger facility. In 1979, he rebuilt a cathedral of worship to accommodate God’s people. Pastor Ellis had a deep desire to expand and enrich the ministry of GLPT in the community. He established several ministries including a jail ministry, a nursing home ministry, and evangelistic outreach ministry, which blessed the church in its entirety. Under his leadership, Greater Lincoln Park Temple #2 was established in Corpus Christi, Texas, where it became the first thriving Pentecostal church in that city.
On December 6, 2005, the now Bishop Ellis was elected by a large plurality vote as pastor of the Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Morgan Park. In March of 1996, he was installed officially as the Senior Pastor of the historic Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Morgan Park, formerly the Morgan Park Assembly Church, by the late Diocesan Prelate of Illinois, Bishop Arthur M. Brazier.
The new, modern and renamed Greater Lincoln Park Temple, located at 937 West Magnolia in San Antonio, stands as a memorial of the legacy left in that city by this great man of God. It is currently under the leadership of his son, Pastor Jonathan D. Ellis. In 1975, as evidence of the anointing of God on his life, he was elevated to the office of District Elder. Then, in August of 1992, he was promoted to Suffragan Bishop and two years later in March of 1994, again elevated to
Returning to Chicago, he proved to be an anointed and visionary leader. He revitalized the congregation, injected a new energy, paid off debts, and brought new life into the membership. This was validated by the many souls who were saved and blessings God bestowed upon both him and his flock. Undeterred, Bishop Ellis set out on a course to continue to revitalize and rejuvenate the church he was now pastoring, with the motto, “I’m Bishop E, Because I’ve Been Set Free.” Chicago was now tuned in to this dynamic Gospel preacher. The news quickly spread that something was going on at the “Park!” Many people began to flock to the services and before long the church was at
capacity on Sunday mornings. One of the premiere Gospel broadcast on the WORD Network was the APC of Morgan Park featuring Bishop William A. Ellis and the dynamic choir of Chicago singing. “What A Fellowship,” at 11:00 a.m. every Saturday morning. Without a doubt, church was going to take place as the people gave God praise through singing and dancing, with the highlight of turning in to hear “Bishop E” sing “Daily I Shall Worship Thee” and “I’ll Give You Praise.” Although he was a great and accomplished singer, musician, and preacher, he was also a loving father, Poppy, brother, uncle, and friend; to many across the world. He was known as Little Willie, Uncle Willie, William, Bishop E, Bishop, Pops, Dad and Apostle, to name a few. In September of 2016, Bishop Ellis retired leaving his son, Pastor Bill to follow in his footsteps as the fourth pastor of Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Morgan Park. Although as our Emeritus Pastor, he was unable to jump over pews, shout, dance and run the aisles as he had many times before, we believe he was still rendering praise and thanksgiving to the Almighty God until he took his last breath. So now, we bow in humble submission to the will of our Father who has blessed us with a rich harvest of memories as we commend him to His keeping.
The Legacy he left us...
includes his genuine love for people, sustained sacrifices, humility, dedication and unshakable commitment that will be forever remembered by his four sons: Isaac Devaughn (Tessa) and Pastor Jonathan David of San Antonio, Texas; Michael Anthony (Sandra) of Olympia Fields, Illinois, and William Anthony, Jr. affectionately known as Pastor Bill (Kellen) of Tinley Park, Illinois; seven grandchildren: Joshua, Iman, India, Isaac Jr., Jeylon, Eden and Amry; a grandchild who preceded him in death, Allyson; one sister: Cena Ellis Washington (Farmington, Michigan); three sisters-in-law: Wilma Ellis-Johnson (Detroit, Michigan); Mary Slayton (Flossmoor, Illinois) and Jean Martin (Los Angeles, California); two goddaughters: Patrice and Sydney Cooper; Caretaker and “his Sheriff”: Andria Sims; and god brother, Spencer Leak; special cousin, Dr. Mattie Webb, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, friends, and saints everywhere, and the Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Morgan Park, Greater Lincoln Park Temple, and The Conquerors Assembly families whom he loved dearly. JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2021 MARCH/APRIL MARCH/APRIL 20202020
As I began my journey into the pastorate, the church remained stable, the membership grew, and families were mended. Our congregation increased in so many ways. Several major renovations and building projects were completed. Various community programs and initiatives were successfully established through the ministry. I even watched my own children serve in the work of the Lord just as I had when I was a child.
Through the years, I’ve been privileged to cover and mentor many ministers and pastors locally, nationally and even internationally. The pastoral guidance which prepared me through a lifetime of lessons and training has permitted me to help others in their ministerial commission. Undoubtedly, I know that my life is a miracle. Although my parents were not in church at the time, it was the Lord who led them to my grandparents. It was the Lord that answered the prayers of my grandmother, which preserved me and changed the trajectory of my life. My parents, my grandparents and most of my siblings have transitioned, yet my Pentecostal heritage and Apostolic focus remains unwavering. My faith and life experiences have allowed me to develop holistic programming to help others become positioned in their calling for such a time as this. You don’t have to be a victim to life’s unfavorable circumstances because there is victorious survival with the Lord on your side. My preference is not to be limited to just being identified as a “female” pastor, but I want to be recognized as a true servant to Christ’s people and His church. God preserved my life for this.
The years passed on as the Lord continued to enlarge my borders. As a member of the Greater Pennsylvania State Council (GPSC), I served in several ministries and became a lay pastor on the executive board. I became the first female Pastor to serve as the 2nd Vice-Chairman, 1st Vice-Chairman and eventually Chairman of the GPSC. In 2000, Bishop Ronald L. Young appointed me as Pennsylvania’s first female District Elder. After serving as District Elder for several years, I was then appointed to become the first female Suffragan Bishop of the GPSC in 2013.

BUILDING UPON THE FOUNDATION F i n d i n g O u t Yo u r P u r p o s e i n G o d

o all young people, youth Pastors, Pastors I pray that this article will encourage you to build a firm foundation in Jesus Christ where God can rest, rule and empower you for His use. Youth leaders and Pastors, it is vital to create a curriculum that involves young people receiving a solid foundation in Christ. Throughout my life in church I realized it was my exposure to ministry, in particular serving others that showed me my purpose in God. I have learned that ministry is not about being served, but it is rather about serving others. Perhaps you have not discovered where or what God has purposed in your life. I want to eencourage you to become a faithful servant in your local assembly joining the missions and outreach departments. Working in these areas of ministries will lead you to your purpose. Jesus gives insight to being a servant… Mark 10:45, 42 “But Jesus called them to him, and said unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great one’s exercise authority upon them. 43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: 44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. 45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

the Hymn “IF I CAN HELP SOMEBODY” written by Alma Irene Bazel Androzzo Thompson. Through the years, I have met many people who have made an impact within our world and I said to myself, I don’t want my life to be in vain. I want to leave a legacy by being a person that helps others. I encourage you that the most rewarding thing about ministry is not money, but for me is seeing someone smile. Bishop James Rodges in a sermon illustration once said that “it is a blessing to be able to give; you could be the person on the receiving end and not the giving end”. With this approach to ministry, I am grateful that God blesses us with the opportunity and ability to be of service to others. Most often what is commercialized in ministry looks attractive from the perspective of worldly gain such as the lust the eye, the lust of the flesh and pride of life, such as what is described in 1 John 2:16. I am definitely not encouraging you that God doesn’t want you to have the finer things in life; what I am saying is that God doesn’t want us going into ministry with the wrong mentality, because if we do, it will be the driving force of the ministry and not a service. Ministry requires sacrifice and it involves doing things that most people are not willing to do. Most of my great lessons of ministry happened in my teenage years.
NOT GOING INTO MINISTRY FOR THE WRONG REASONS
As a teenager, I held on to the scripture:
As a young man, I always told myself not to be attracted to ministry for the glamour and the fame, instead desire to make an impact in the lives of God’s people, because making a difference in lives is more powerful than glamour or fame. My inspiration for helping people is reflected in

“
Ministry is not about being served, but it is rather about serving others. THE IMPORTANCE OF FOUNDATION
”
As a child, I grew up around the church. I developed a passion for God’s Word through my exposure to Sunday school and youth ministry. I learned and developed a love for the Bible through activities such as Bible bowl, Bible verse recital, and Bible trivia. This foundation as a teenager allowed me to compete in a Bible bowl on a local and national level. As a teenager, I had to learn the lessons of competition, not wanting to lose, and having the humility whether I won or lost. As a teenager, I travelled across America in my organization, going to youth congresses and conventions. I believe that one of the keys to finding your purpose in God is your openness to serving in different capacities. Throughout my early years in life, which is what I consider the foundational years in ministry, I served as a youth usher, nursing home committee member, working with feeding the homeless, almost every choir you can think of, from the youth choir to Mass Choir. Through my exposure to different ministries, it helped me to understand I enjoyed going to the nursing home. As a youth, I remember going to visit my aunt in the nursing home before she died. I remember the smile she would have on her face each time my family and I would visit. I also remember she was unable to speak well enough for anyone to understand. I don’t remember much about her, but I remember the two words she said “Big Bag”whatever that meant or whatever she was trying to say, she looked at me with a glow in her eyes and with a smile on her face. Little did I know by being exposed to going to the nursing home that God would later put a passion in my heart for helping the elderly and going to the nursing home. I have learned to consider ministry as a blessing to serve and not an obligation. I encourage you as Youth and Youth Leaders to view ministry as serving the Lord. Jesus encourages us in Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. Reflecting on my experiences as a youth, I would hear messages on knowing “Purpose” and “Calling.”
THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
I searched and searched, and prayed and prayed, and lo and behold all of my youth experiences in church have led up to what I enjoy most, which is preaching and teaching God’s Word. It was at an annual convention held by the First United Churches of Jesus Christ Inc., Bishop Monroe R. Saunders the Presiding Bishop. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a youth night service and Bishop Liston Paige was the speaker for the night. The message of the night was entitled “DO YOU KNOW YOUR PURPOSE” by the end of the message, he called everyone to the altar and asked us to pray. In this prayer he asked for everyone to ask God for their purpose and assignment from God. It was that night at the altar and hearing from God, that God showed me purpose in ministry, God wanted me to teach and preach His Word. I did not know that all my experience in ministry was preparing me for that moment and to accept what God was preparing me for. Often we sing the song “Lord, I am available to You” with or without realizing that God really does want us to be available so that He can use our lives to help others.

M ONEY MATTERS
MONEY
ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN
PT. 1
by Suffragan Bishop Maxie D. Dobson, CPA (retired) & General Treasurer of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (2014-Present)
“Discipline and fasting are keys to success in money matters.” (Just hold your horses!!!)
Permit me to provide a synopsis of my upbringing, so as to bring an understanding as it pertains to my sometimes “non-mainstream vernacular.” I was born in DC (that is, Duplin County, North Carolina). I plowed a mule by the name of Emma, and as a youth until I graduated from college, spent my summers working in tobacco fields in temperatures of 90 to 100+ degrees. Needless to say, I was very inspired to make an exit from my native DC. Now, let’s go back to my opening declaration, “discipline and fasting are keys to success in money matters.” We will agree that the words discipline and fasting are very interchangeable for each other, in that “fasting is discipline, and discipline is essential to fasting.” And, when it comes to “achieving success in money matters,” discipline and fasting will be required. Just like we say no to our flesh when it is attempting to make the case that we will die, if we do not eat something before our predetermined fast time is over, such discipline is indispensable for “for achieving success in money matters.” Case in point, saying no to “impulse buying, or no to buying something for which there has not been any pre-thinking of its big-picture impact on available money,” is a necessary component of optimal financial management. Needless to say, this is easier said than done, particularly when marketers, through sophisticated research, determine effectively how to incite their desired outcome, which is to bring about an impulse purchase. Even though the multi-billion dollar advertising industry is “a giant force” with which to reckon, personal “discipline and fasting (choosing to deny yourself),” will produce repeated victories. A concept that will assist is the establishment of a bottom dollar. This is an amount, for which nothing, that’s not catastrophic, will allow you to go below it in spending, which is maintained, say, in a checking account used to accommodate monthly living expenses (this does not, though, pertain to targeted savings). The bottom dollar must be protected with extreme diligence; it should be out of range or have significant cushion above it so that it will never be in danger. One month’s income could be a starting point, in terms of an amount for your bottom dollar. It may even require a period of time to even curtail spending to get it fully established, but it would be one step toward “achieving success in money matters.”
“
DISCIPLINE and FASTING are keys to SUCCESS in money matters.”

MENTAL HEALTH
COMING OUT
ON THE OTHER SIDE
OF THE STORM
By Karen Roland Douglass, Psy.D
“As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement, they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” - Luke 8: 23-25 KJV “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” - Romans 8:18 KJV

ur world is filled with grief and despair at every turn. The current storms of COVID-19 and the and lives lost to the pandemic, the recent social injustices, and the blatant racism and provocation of hatred from our political leaders have put our physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing at risk. Just as in times of inclement weather and natural disasters, we are seeking refuge to shield us from the storms of life and trying to remain hopeful for a restoration.
who you know, what your professional title is or how many degrees you have, how much money is in your bank account, or what labels are attached to the inside of your clothes. None of that matters and you are not exempt. The aim of this short article is to address the Body of Christ and provide practical interventions and biblical wisdom and guidance as we go through the current storms of life, and illuminate the path of God through these difficult times as we are coming out on the other side of the storm.
As a practicing Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 30 years of experience, I have integrated clinical principles into the spiritual foundation of my treatment modality. The stress and devastation I see in my patients’ lives far surpass that of any other time. No one is exempt from the current perils of life, not even the children of the “Most High God”. It doesn’t matter what your spiritual leadership position may be, who you are related to or
The predominant theme I’ve come across in over 90% of the patients I counsel (many of whom are Christians) is the expression of distress and anxiety associated with the current state of affairs. Many feel isolated and alone, not knowing how to effectively cope with the uncertainties of their daily lives and not having a clear view of where they are going. People are desperately trying to maneuver through this new way of life while at the same time maintaining hope that all will be well on the other side of it.

3. Develop alternative methods to collect tithes and offerings—Zelle, via mail, direct withdrawal from bank accounts, text to give, etc.
4. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you are not techsavvy. During this season, your peers are more open to helping than ever before. You are not in this alone and We are in this together.
5. In all your getting, get an understanding: Does the idea of the COVID-19 vaccine being the “sign of the beast” really line up with the Word of GOD?
while simultaneously trying to maintain a physical church building and dealing with their own physical, emotional, spiritual, family, and financial difficulties. There is a constant state of loss that was not foreseen. The question is how do we grieve what we once knew and how do we thrive amidst the storm? With all that is going on, it is time for Christians to truly become the “Living Word”; we must demonstrate what we have been preaching and teaching. Lip service will no longer suffice. There has to be a bold demonstration of who we are in Christ despite the dismal condition of life. We must not see ourselves as 10 of the 12 disciples who were sent out to survey the promised land; we cannot see ourselves as grasshoppers (Numbers 13:33), but we must see ourselves as GOD sees us: as mighty men of valor (Judges 6:12). We should not focus on our struggles but rather look for GOD amidst the struggles and trust that His promises will be manifested here on earth. If He called you, He will sustain you. It may not look like you envisioned it, but He will do what he said; He is not like man that He should lie, neither the son of man that He should repent (Numbers 23:19). Here are some practical approaches for you to consider as you fight the good fight and anticipate coming out on the other side:
1. Follow your state and local guidelines to help stay safe-wear a mask, wash your hands, practice physical distancing.
6. Do not buy into the conspiracy theory—know that what the devil means for our demise, GOD means for our good and no weapon formed against us shall prosper.
7. Do not be so easily put into bondage by the spirit of fear.
8. Be open to professional mental health treatment.
There is no shame in getting help; the shame is not getting help when it is available. Stigma is not your friend!
9. Do not totally reject social isolation—take time out
for silence and solitude to be able to hear from GOD. He is speaking in these troubled times so let us listen intently.
10. Make meditation a regular part of your daily habits.
The Word says in Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
11. Connect with a friend and confidant (a person to hold you accountable, who you can be transparent and will encourage you).
Do not draw back; GOD is in the storm with you. He
2. Use wisdom when opening the physical church who has begun a good work will complete it unto the building—mandate the completion of pre-arrival wellness surveys, enforce the proper wearing of masks, install hand sanitizer stations, update your building’s HVAC system with the proper filters and ensure seating is at least 6 feet apart.

Soul By Elder Neal Billy Moore
Something So Small Could Mean So Much!
P
raise the Lord, saints! I would like to share with you a few words about this very important subject. I literally would not be alive had it not been for some precious saints who took interest and concern about my soul and the condition it was in. I had just pleaded guilty to murder and armed robbery and was sentenced to death on July 17, 1974. With an execution date of September, Friday 13, 1974. My Aunt Peggy Fuller from Columbus, Ohio, told her pastor, Elder Hardy, that he needed to do something, and he called Elder Nealon and Laura Guthrie of Rome, Georgia. They came to the county jail and told me about the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for a person like me, a murderer, just because He LOVED me…that day I was baptized in Jesus’ name and filled with the Holy Spirit.
Elder Guthrie was on the board of Aenon Bible College, and at one of the meetings he told the student body that there was a young man on death row in Georgia who just gave his life to the Lord. Honestly, I really knew nothing about God, because I never attended a church in my life. The student body wrote me a letter telling me who they were and how excited they were to hear the news that I was saved and would like to extend a helping hand, in assisting me in my Christian walk, and said that they would pay for me to take any of the courses offered by the college. I was so ashamed and full of guilt about my crime, that I didn’t feel worthy of any studies, but after their persistence of telling me that I really needed to know all that I could about the Lord, I said that I would only study the Sunday school teacher course, so, all the books, workbooks and paper were sent THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
to me to get started. It was these students who took me under their wings, not looking at the fact that I was a guilty murderer, but a soul in need of help, and that extented hand of help could change the life of a soul. Their letters of encouragement and insight were like the Holy Spirit helping me in the darkest place a person could find themselves. They and the whole college, all the instructors, teachers and even the director of Aenon were helping to guide me in this quest, because as soon as I finished the Sunday school teacher’s course, I was sent the Evangelist curriculum and the new student body followed suit in their help for over the next two years. The Director said that since I did a good job on the Evangelist studies course, he was entering me into the Ministerial curriculum. What is writing a letter to an inmate? It would seem like it isn’t much, but allow me to let you see how we, as inmates view this. When a person sits down to write a letter, a few things begin to happen; first they begin to close out all the noise around them: their family, all the things that they need to be done in the house, and begin to center their focus and thoughts on what they “POSITIONED FOR PROMISE”
are going to share with me. Into my darkness of prison, they are shining some light of what is happening in their lives, around the world and most of all what God is doing in the church world that we know nothing about, they are giving themselves to us (the inmates) in a very special way that brings hope in the midst of hardship, darkness, violence and pain. Some may see these letters as just that, letters, but to us they are lifelines of hope. Jesus said, in Matthew 25:26…I was in prison, and you visited me. One would say, but I am not actually going into the prison and sitting down and visiting an inmate. I would like to suggest this to you in the hope that you see what I see in comparison of the above Scripture. You and your words are the same person, there isn’t any real separation of the two; your feelings, emotions, expressions, faith and love flows through your words in a letter whether or not you come in person. So, when I was in prison you came to visit me, whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Today I spend more time in prison working with inmates to help them not receive the death sentence, as I guide their attorneys in the right direction, in getting to know their clients, the inmates, and getting the inmates to know their God and Savior Jesus Christ. It is with sincere hope and the grace of God that you; my family of the P.A.W. who read this, extend your hands and help us by becoming an Inspirational Writer of the Adopt-ASoul prison ministry. The Doctrine of True Salvation
Dear Sister Mona, I thank God for you, and the P.A.W., for all of the love and support, that you’ve shown me over the years of my imprisonment, and walk with Christ.
By Marcus R. Jones, M.D.

ear Readers, we have chosen to revisit this hidden treasure, “The Doctrine of True Salvation,” by the late Dr. Marcus Jones after reading this letter I received from one of our Adopt-A-Soul prison ministry participant that is featured in this magazine. When I read J. Long’s response concerning this book on salvation, the Spirit of the Lord brought back to my remembrance the Scripture that is found Mark 8:24 concerning a blind man when our Lord spit on this man’s eyes, and put His hands upon him, Jesus asked the man how he saw. The man’s reply was I see men as trees, walking. Jesus, therefore, put His hands upon this man’s eyes again, and made this man look up, and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. My dear readers, many of us have love ones, friends, co-workers as well as neighbors that we have shared God’s Word concerning salvation, and many of them just don’t understand. Such was the case with our dear brother: Nevertheless, the book sent this planting of a seed, he read it, and in due time, God opened up his eyes and the truth of God’s Word was made clear,

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
There is one book that you sent me entitled: “The Doctrine of True Salvation” by the late brother Dr. Marcus Jones, for my reading, because I had written you concerning some doctrinal issue. I can especially credit this book for helping bring me to the light on some issues. Even though I had already read the book the first week you sent it, a couple of years ago. But just recently, God has chosen to open my eyes up in a way that He never has before. I’m now soundly rooted, and convinced in our “Oneness” doctrine, without a shadow of a doubt, that Jesus Christ is the Father, He is the Son, He is the Holy Ghost. God answered my prayers in bringing this truth to me, through you, and I’ll be eternally grateful for it through the ministry of the PAW Adopt-A-Soul Prison Ministry. It aint no trinity! The Lord is One! Jesus Christ is the name of our God! PRAISE THE LORD FOR REVEALING THIS TO ME. My grandmother, God bless her soul, she told me this when I was very young, but I just didn’t get it then. (She was a member of Greater Christ Tempe in Little Rock AR., under the late Bishop Leodis Warren). Also, I now wholeheartly believe in the elements of salvation: Repent, be baptized in Jesus name (which I have done), and receive the Holy Ghost (with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues), of which, I’m now seeking. Keep me in your prayers and I look forward to seeing you, when I’m free from these chains of man, or in the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ!
The late Marcus R. Jones was the founder and pastor of the very first autonomous Apostolic Pentecostal Fellowship in the history of the Virginia Department of Corrections. A former medical resident of the Eastern Virginia Postgraduate School of Medicine, he held a medial doctorate from Eastern Virginia Medical School and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Norforlk State University. “POSITIONED FOR PROMISE”
