From the Desk of the Presiding Bishop

Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr.

Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc.

Greetings in the matchless, amazing Name of Jesus Christ! Lady Brooks and greet you warmly with the love of God! The year 2020 has been an unprecedented one thus far, which for many of you reading is an understatement. For many, the doors of the church are still closed, and the circumstances of the pandemic COVID-19 are back on the rise. However, I have found comfort in the Lord and a sense of peace that only comes from relationship with Jesus. Indeed, our world is confronted with changes left and right beyond even COVID-19, and too often it feels as if we are confronted on every side with new challenges. Despite these many challenges, we can rest assured in the consistency and faithfulness of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Him, we find our stability in an unstable world. In Him, we find peace in chaos. In Him, we find hope for an uncertain future, and the confidence to keep going day after day. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever more—and He will be with us through each change we may feel and experience. Though we are unable to gather together physically this year, we have worked tirelessly to offer to you the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World’s first ever Virtual Convention. I pray you are blessed by the seminars, prayer sessions, and worship services. As much as we are not able to be together in Baltimore, we are still unified in spirit and across the airways. Each of us is a member of the Body of Christ, and in that we are never as alone as we may feel. We are together and unified in the Spirit of God no matter how the world shifts us, and that, my brothers and sisters, gives me hope for when we will gather again. The Master’s Servants, Bishop Theodore and Lady L. Janice Brooks

FROM THE

EDITOR Evangelist Neechy Dumas

Thank you to the many readers and subscribers of the May/June issue of The Christian Outlook. Your support has once again amazed us with record breaking numbers of pre-orders and overall magazine sales. We are also excited about the newly launched DIGITAL version of The Christian Outlook. A special thank you to our amazing team (listed on page 4) for their continued support of this immense effort; even in the midst of uncertain times, they have consistently helped to push this great magazine forward.

I

would like to thank our Presiding Bishop, Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr., for the continued opportunity to serve our great organization in this capacity. His notable leadership during a time of pandemic and civil unrest has met us with compassion and hope. In recent months, we have found ourselves in a position to learn more about our culture, our environment, our laws and even ourselves. Many have shared that in the midst of a global pandemic and social unrest, they have learned a new craft or skill, spent more time with family, leveled up with their technological know-how and even had the courage to remove things from their life that were hindering their growth. I truly believe that this is still the year where God can and will bless us with the performance of EVERY promise that He has made us. (Romans 4:21)

Suff. Bishop Johnson on their perspective of Social Justice and Righteousness; that you’ll see once again see how the power of PRAYER is still able to change things from Suff. Bishop Vanuel Little, Jr.; and that you’ll be motivated to pursue your dreams by the inspirational interview with Jermaine Lawrence Anderson. “God’s Promise to Perform” will stand no matter what transition you may be going through, and it is in His promise that we find hope and peace in spite of all adversity. May you continue to have a blessed and prosperous year. Blessings, Evang. Neechy Marketing & Publications Director @Neechy

Q IMPACTFUL LEADERSHIP

What leader has inspired you and why? Ciara Tymony NCDC & City of Refuge (Los Angeles) Deaf Ministry Pastor Lorraine Williams. She has demonstrated the importance of leaving the 99 to go after the lost sheep. The lost sheep being the deaf and differently abled in our churches and the community who often go overlooked and undervalued for the gifts and talents they bring to the body of Christ. She works to make sure they not only have equal access to the Word of God, but also representation and the opportunity to use their gifts to glorify their savior. She does this consistently, and is an example of how we should treat all of God’s children.

Marie A Motley-Warren

Elect Lady Gilda Patricia A. Baker! Virginia State Council! I’ve seen her go through several major illnesses but she never let them keep her from doing the work of the Lord! She always has an encouraging word to the women of God. She works hard to make sure that the women are always becoming all that they can be in the Lord. God bless you Elect Lady Gilda Patricia A. Baker, love you dearly!

Josie Truesdale

Suffragan Bishop Brenda Cuthbertson pastor of Pentecostal Faith Assembly for over 25 years. After the passing of her grandmother, she took the mantle and led us on. Today after over 60 years, the church is a powerful church in the community-Bishop Cuthbertson is always on the move. She would travel over 600 miles to be with her member to support in passing of a family member. I should know that member was me. She served in any capacity when it comes to the church, whether feeding the hungry or clothing people in need. I have been a faithful member for over 50 years. She shows nothing but genuine love. Pray for my pastor and our church.

Yvonne Grubbs

Suffragan Bishop David Eddings and his wife, Dr. Pauline Eddings, First Pentecostal Church, Phoenix, AZ. Mountain States Council. I attend because the Word of God is preached and practiced in it’s entirety and love in the purest form and because of how it’s taught. It gives you staying power and a hunger and thirst for more of Jesus.

(Evangelist) Amy Bryant

Evangelist Donna Hampton in the Arkansas District Council. She is an anointed singer and worship leader. She’s always positive and full of hope. Her joy shines through in everything she does! @dlhamp I truly thank God for her!

THE QUESTION

Connie Reese

My Pastor and Bishop, Bishop Mark C. Tolbert of Victorious Life Church KC! I could name every holy accolade you could think of i.e. a man of God, someone who allows God to lead him, etc... What inspires me the most about him is that he is “real” with everyone! He can love you, rebuke you, and love you again in the same sentence, but you know it was warranted. Not only does he care about your soul, but he cares about your every day life. He’s an educator of every day life. He’s an entrepreneur that shares his knowledge and tries to bring those who are willing to work along with him. He never stops trying to make “it” happen. Seeing him march for Black Lives Matter, was not surprising to me. That’s just who he is. With all of that, I must mention his wife, Emelda Tolbert, who holds him together through it all. You can’t tell me any different. She’s the Michele to his Barack before it was cool. #HeartOfAmericaCouncil

“Seek good and not evil—and live! You talk about God, the God-of-the-Angel-Armies, being your best friend. Well, live like it, nd maybe it will happen. inneapolis, Minnesota, the largest city in the state, and the place of my birth. A city known as “Minnesota Nice”, a city which has drawn thousands to live here including St. Paul, MN. Together, these cities are known as the Twin Cities and home to a diverse economy including 16 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Minnesota. St. Paul is the capitol of Minnesota, and Minneapolis is the home of the University of Minnesota. On May 25, 2020, a chilling video of a black man named George Floyd was seen lying in the street on Chicago Ave and 38th street, Minneapolis, handcuffed and surrounded by 4 police, with one of them having his knee on the neck of Mr. Floyd. Mr. Floyd pleaded for air as his life slowly oozed from him, but in the final 8 minutes and 46 seconds, he tried to get some air as he told the police that he could not breathe, but that didn’t work, as the knee of the police maintained his position on the man’s neck. Finally, Mr. Floyd in his last moments asked for his late mother, as she was interred in a Houston cemetery long before May 25. Mr. Floyd died!

10

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

He was 46, but age doesn’t matter here. Where he expired on Chicago Ave, doesn’t matter either. What did matter, however, was the awful and sickening video of the police whose insensitivity towards human rights was noted. It was another note held in abeyance with the death of Philando Castile, a black man shot by the police in a car on July 6, 2016 for no reason except the police thought he had a gun. He didn’t! Another sickening reminder of the death of Jamar Clark, a 24 year old black man shot by the police in Minneapolis without a weapon in his hand. Both these men and others in the country whose killings were from the hands of white law enforcement officials were not forgotten but tolerated hoping for justice and peace, and reform to change the policies and practices of police brutality against African Americans. Mr. Floyd’s murder reminded me of all the deaths at the hands of police brutality, but this time, these reminders cannot sit idly by the people of faith and continue to use rhetoric in massaging the issue which confronts our country. Do people of faith, filled with prayer, filled with the Holy Ghost, filled with compassion, filled with the mandate to evangelize the lost, have the right to protest? I protested after Jamar Clark’s death, and faith leaders this time, decided to protest peaceably after the death of Mr. Floyd. Hundreds of faith leaders took the street, and marched to the site where Mr. Floyd’s final 8 minutes and 46 seconds were memorialized. Never had I had the satisfaction in marching peaceably with faith leaders across the area, including marching with Pastors of the Minnesota, Wisconsin and Dakotas District Council of the PAW. We marched for justice, we marched for reform, we marched in silent protest and at the end of the march, I was asked to lead in the prayer. There was a determination in our faith, that God can and will bring reform into an area that needs healing and deliverance. It was necessary as people of faith, to go outside the walls of the church building, and make our requests known unto God. We know 2 Chronicles 7:14; we know Proverbs 15:22; we know Amos 5:14-15. We marched in the spirit in Amos 5:24. I had to march for my children and grandchildren, and for the next generation of faith leaders whose eyes are on the Lord to change what needs to be changed in a time which too many prudent are kept silent. (Amos 5:13). Police Brutality against all persons and especially against persons of color must change as God Almighty knows that law enforcement is necessary in our areas of abode, but may their ministries of justice be done with the fear of God and respect human rights of all.

Race & Religion

Suffragan Bishop David E. Johnson

innesota’s Black community and our struggles with racism are relatively unknown to much of the country. Yet, in many ways, this uprising is not a surprise. While African Americans were always guaranteed freedom by Minnesota’s constitution, the same laws protected Southern slaveholders’ rights to vacation in the state throughout the 1800’s, bringing enslaved Africans and maintaining ownership, even on free land, until the Dred Scott ruling in 1857. This is just one example of the covert nature of racism in Minnesota, a state with some of the most significant academic, employment, income, health, and home ownership gaps between white and Black people in the country. This isn’t the first time our community has experienced race riots. In 1967, during the ‘long hot summer’ of protests throughout the nation, tensions rose across Minneapolis, erupting in 3 days of protests for justice in North Minneapolis. And George Floyd is the third Black man in Minnesota to be killed by a police officer in the last 5 years. Our pain is only compounding as we fight against racism to stay alive. Race and Racism. While race is a man-made construct, racism penetrates the heart of man. The concept of racism has perplexed our human minds, confounded our policies, and divided our communities for centuries, even as we’ve sought the ideals of unity and prosperity. The United States of America was founded on a crime, the theft of land from Native Americans, and built by enslaved Africans, stolen from their own land to gain free labor; crimes for which no one has ever been charged, sentenced, or ever served time. Yet, today, all across America, we find ourselves, fighting to stay alive, protesting for justice for our brothers and sisters whose lives are being taken at the hands of police officers who claim the right, crime, or not. But this sin did not begin in 1492, 1619, or 1776. I submit that we find the beginnings of racism, injustice and implicit bias during the building of the pyramids and the infrastructure of one of the

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

world’s largest empires. From Pharaoh’s House to the White House we witness a deep trail of racial inequality. From the Great Palace to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the perils of racial hatred, entrenched by policy, yet remain. The fight to stay alive has become urgent and real on all fronts people of color in Minnesota and across America. The Church of the living GOD has occupied a space that distanced her from the fight. But God has been sounding a call for the Church to SHIFT and we had to heed that call. Silence is complicity. The Church is called to shine as light to a dark and dying world; to be salt to a saltless city, so, we speak. We speak the truth. We speak the Word. We advocate for systemic policy change in the halls of justice where our voices are respected and carry influence. We stand in solidarity on the front lines for justice. We serve in our communities, meeting the needs of those who can only trust community, working, cleaning, praying, giving. We love a community that is desperately in need of the healing touch of God. And, we march, in unity with clergy for urgent police, judicial, economic, and policy reform. We stand. And we remind our brothers and sisters of the words Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail in 1963 “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” With this in mind we see the radical responsibility of the New Testament Christian Church.”

Be patient and listen if they get frustrated If they say “I don’t get it” or “I’m tired and I can’t do this,” be patient and listen to them to show that they feel understood. Once you’ve heard how they’re feeling, ask them to read the directions aloud, or point to the section that’s confusing. From there, use your own knowledge or guide them to a resource (sent from the teacher, online resource, teacher assistance during office hours, or friend/ family member) that can help them. Saying things like “This is new to you and new to me. Let’s work together to get this done” can be helpful. Using their social relationships/game time as a motivation The teen years are a time when kids become more independent so it’s normal to experience some conflict and pushback to do work. However, using their social relationships and love for gaming can be a helpful tool. Some experts recommend using a “when- then” strategy to ensure that kids complete their tasks in lieu of parents reacting in anger. For example, you can say “If you work hard for the next hour or when you complete this assignment, you can get 30 minutes of game time or can call/Facetime your friends for 30 minutes.” Don’t be too hard on your kids or yourself As this can be a stressful time for both kids and adults, don’t take out your personal frustrations or frustrations with their academics on your kids while at home with them. Just try to remember that you and your kids are adjusting to something new and there may be hiccups along the way. Allow for some personal breaks for yourself or fun things to do with your kids during the day to cope together during this time of uncertainty. “And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some pastors and teachers...“Eph. 4:11 “You ain’t no preacher, sister. You’ll never be one. You just ain’t got it.” Those are the words I heard from my then pastor when I acknowledged my Call to the Ministry. Crushed is an understatement. Was it because I was a woman? Was it my age? I had been saved since I was thirteen. I was now in my early twenties. I knew the Word. I had been studying since I first got Saved. I prayed and fasted regularly. What did God have against me? (Gal. 3:28) I continued to be faithful. (Heb. 13:17). I decided to attend Aenon Bible College, long distance. I graduated from their two-year theology program with an Associates Degree. I also took classes at various other schools where I received ministerial certificates. Yet, I was not accepted as a preacher. Pastors and others began to send for me to preach for them. I could not go because I was just a “speaker” and not a “preacher.” Little did I realize that God was setting me up to be used by Him. In God’s own time, another P.A.W., Inc. church opened in my area. An answer to prayer, God gave me permission to place my membership there; and almost immediately my new pastor began to use me In a ministerial capacity. He said that all I needed was “exposure,” and he began teaching me how to conduct myself as a female who was called to preach the gospel. Even though I fulfilled my home duties, I began to walk through the doors God was opening for me. Each assignment led me to others. I was being called to preach for Women’s Days, Conferences, Councils, Revivals, Youth Services, Marriage Seminars, etc., you name it, (both in and out of the country).

My Pastor taught me the importance of having my own money to get to and from an assignment. I was taught not to rely on my host pastor for funds. The more I traveled, the greater the offerings became. I discovered that if I didn’t get what I expected in one place, the Lord would make it up In the next. I learned to respect the host pastor’s companion. I often preach for female pastors as well as male. One of the worst things an Evangelist can do is get on the wrong side of the pastor’s companion. It can make or break your ministry. One of the most important things I found out was to “Be Yourself.” It is natural to want to be like those we consider giants in ministry. We want to preach like them, dress like them, emulate like them, etc. “Be Yourself.” Just preach Jesus! Preach Christ and Him crucified! (I Cor. 1:23) As Paul told Timothy, “Preach the Word.” (II Tim. 4:2) It’s been a long journey. An exciting one! This female who would never be “no preacher,” has been blessed to preach the Gospel throughout these United States; the Bahamas; Canada; Nottingham, England; Bristol, England; St. Kitts, West Indies; Ghana, West Africa, Johannesburg, So. Africa, and Israel. I have preached for many of the major Oneness organizations, as well as several other non-PAW, Inc. organizations. It was indeed an honor to be asked to preach for the PAW, Inc. at the 100th year of its inception. The message for the night was, “This is the Lord’s church.” That Word is still ringing in the hearts of God’s people. I have no doubt that I am Called. I know that I am definitely Chosen. I can honestly say, I am now Accepted. To God be the Glory! Pictured below: Dr. E. Lorraine Langham in South Africa with some of the children; Dr. Langham with Apostle Thomas W. Weeks, Sr., preaching at The Gathering.

TESTIMONIAL

Prayer By Suffragan Bishop Vanuel C. Little, Jr. The scripture tells us in Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

T

here have been many events and happenings in my life that have fully shaped who I am today. I’ve singled out three of them. These are three major events that have happened in my life, and my story would have been cut short if the outcome were different. Come on this journey with me if you would:

news. That morning a truck packed with explosives was detonated outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, downtown Oklahoma City, killing 168 people and leaving hundreds more injured. I was supposed to be a block and a half away paying a bill. His plan is to give me hope and a future.

It’s 1981, after speaking with my father, I left the church to head to a job site for work. As I was driving it began to pour down, raining so hard that I couldn’t see anything beyond the hood of my car. As the rain kept coming down, I began to slow down. All of a sudden, on the far left, a white Oldsmobile came spinning out of control like a spinning top. In that moment I could only grab the steering wheel and call on Jesus. Everything was in slow motion and all I knew is I was wet, cold, and my face felt heavy. I had no idea what had happened. As I lay on the wet and cold pavement, the car rolled away from me, thankfully not running me over. Someone saw me and was able to identify me by matching the name on my ID to the church bulletin found in my truck with the church and pastor’s name on it. Once I came to in the hospital, I was told by medical staff that if I did not have my seatbelt on, I wouldn’t be alive. During the accident, the steering column was detached and crushed my jaw in four places, hit me in the chest, and knocked me out of the car. This should have been my last day, but His plan is that I prosper.

Now here we are, September 10, 2001. After being treated poorly by an airline, I was given a free ticket to use within a year to travel anywhere within the US. At that time, my wife and I had a business and we frequently traveled to purchase merchandise to resale. Time passed and now my year to use this ticket was about to expire. Normally I don’t travel without my wife, but this time, only having one ticket, I was going to travel alone. I was up all night trying to make this trip work. The more I searched the less I came up with. Time was not on my side. I went to bed with an attitude because midnight had come and I had let my free trip go to waste. I woke the next morning, still upset, watching the news and I see a plane fly into a building. It wasn’t right then but soon enough it came to me that the building that was hit was in New York. New York is where I was trying to book my trip. When we travel, we stay in the Marriott World Trade Center Hotel. The World Trade Center is where the planes hit. Once again God said, I know the plans I have for you, death is not the plan.

Fast-forward to the morning of April 19, 1995. I’m now working for the church. I was supposed to go downtown to the electric company to pay the bill for the church. This is before the time of paying bills online, so to avoid cut off, the bill had to be paid in person. I set my alarm to be downtown at 8:30 a.m. The alarm didn’t go off. I woke up around 9 o’clock in the morning and began to hurry to get dressed and rush to the electric company. As I was in a rush, I heard a big noise, looked around in the backyard, nothing. I was unsure as to what happened until I turned on the THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

It could have been another way, but God, you have the plan for my life. Thank You for being God.

eorge Harold Brooks was born in Brunswick, Maryland, on December 13, 1897. He was raised and attended public school there; and after the death of his father, assumed responsibility of helping his mother raise the family. He was Baptist. Brooks served in the United States Army in World War I; and as a young adult, attended

seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. While on the road preaching, he met Nellie Grayson, whom he married in 1922. In 1924, he heard the Apostolic message of baptism in the name of Jesus and the Holy Ghost with evidence of speaking in tongues. He and his wife Nellie accepted the message, were water baptized. and were filled with the

Holy Ghost at Gospel Tabernacle, under the Pastorate of Elder Charles Johnson in Havre De Grace, Maryland.

First Pentecostal Church until he retired and passed the pastoral mantle to his son.

Brooks moved to Waterbury, Connecticut, in the early 1930’s, at a time when there were no PAW “Councils” on the east coast. The PAW churches in several states along the east coast were linked under the old “Eastern District Conference.” Bishop Samuel Grimes, who along with Bishop Joseph Turpin of Baltimore and others established the Eastern District, was PAW’s Presiding Bishop.

Bishop Brooks was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved his family; he was stern when it came to discipline and studying the Word of God. He was also known for his soul stirring, captivating sermons such as “Red Cord in the Window.” He passed on to his reward on August 26, 1993.

In 1936, Brooks became the pastor of the historic Star of Bethlehem Church in Ansonia, Connecticut, and served there until 1950. Following the death of his former pastor & District Elder, Lambert Tolbert, Brooks assumed the pastorate of Beulah Heights First Pentecostal Church in New Haven, Connecticut. Under his leadership, Beulah Heights moved from its storefront location to its present location 782 Orchard Street. On Orchard Street, a larger sanctuary, classrooms, and office space were built to accommodate the growth of this thriving Apostolic church.

Bishop George and Lady Nellie Brooks had nine children through their union: Theodore Brooks, Richard Brooks, Charles Brooks, Carol Oliver, Louise Harris, the late George Daniel Brooks, the late Anna Bowers, the late Walter Brooks, and the late Esther Brooks. Today, his son, Bishop Theodore Brooks, is the Presiding Bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. Another son, Suffragan Bishop Richard Brooks, serves as the longtime Pastor of New Beginnings Apostolic Church in Hamden, Connecticut.

A member of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Brooks worked closely with Bishop Samuel Grimes, his father in the Gospel. He spent a great amount of time with Bishop Grimes and even served as his chauffeur, driving him up and down the east coast as Grimes planted churches and established 13 PAW Councils. Brooks became a District Elder in 1948, and in 1958 was elevated to the office of Suffragan Bishop. He became Bishop of the Connecticut District Council in 1964 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1988. He also served PAW’s Aenon Bible College, as a member of its Board of Directors. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Aenon. Bishop Brooks was close friends with Bishop William Crossley, Elder Artie Wilson, and Bishop Frank Bowdan, to name a few. Like his mentor, Bishop Grimes, Brooks had a love for missions. He dedicated such passion to the ministry in Liberia that an elementary school was named for him.

hese words sum up the feelings that dwelled in the pit of my mind (stomach) on a daily basis for 14 years of my life. Although I grew up in church and my family was very active, I was a wreck. My grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts being saved did not exempt me from dealing with a full-blown attack from the enemy, and I am going to share my testimony today. Did I just say that? Am I going to share this???? During my 8th grade year, I began slacking in my education and my grades dropped from As & Bs to Cs, Ds & Fs. I was failing in school and cared NOTHING about what was going on around me, but I found peace at church. While my mother was in the church office doing her church secretary work, and my deacon dad locked the doors, I found myself worshipping in the sanctuary to escape the TORMENT in my mind. The torment was confusing to me because I was baptized in Jesus name (at age 13) and filled with the Holy Ghost. Why was I dealing with this mental oppression? I can remember very vividly when it began. After the 1st nine weeks of my 10th grade year, I would sit in class, in my own world, planning how I would skip classes to avoid contact with anyone. I was experiencing anxiety and panic

attacks during class. I would think everyone was staring or laughing at me. This discomfort led to LOW SELF-ESTEEM & DEPRESSION. I wanted to avoid everyone! By my 11th grade year, I could NOT function around anyone. After my mom dropped me off at school, I hid behind trailers located in the back of the school the entire day. Before lunch, I would leave campus to get something to eat at the corner store. I would sneak back into the school to use the restroom. Somedays I hid without food, water or a way to get back into the school for hours. When the anxiety became unbearable, I walked about 20 minutes away to my grandmother’s house. I hid in her backyard until it was time for my mom to pick me up from school. The anxiety of being around people had taken over! I was literally making myself SICK! I successfully skipped classes for almost 2 months before anyone found out. Or at least I thought before anyone found out. As I prepared this testimony and painfully recalled this time of my life, I received information from my parents, I didn’t know about. The school administration contacted them on several occasions after observing me hiding on security cameras. The administration suggested my parents seek professional help for me.

They declined, and decided to take the situation to God, with much prayer and fasting. Consequently, I had to attend summer school, but I was able to graduate! This was a VERY difficult time in my life, but God saw me through it.

“Transition, Transfer, & Transformation” that He is working in my life!

After barely surviving high school, I knew I couldn’t get through college.. I went into my NEXT doubtful. I would wake up early to ensure I would arrive to the parking lot an HOUR before there were any other cars on the lot for my 8am class. I wanted to be one of the first ones in the building, to wait at the door for my class, and sit at the front so I would not see anyone -it was very important. If I wasn’t the first one there, I would go back to my car, leave, and go home. If I didn’t wake up early enough for this plan to work, I would stay home. Again…..my grades began to suffer. I decided, I could not do this anymore, and I stopped going to school. The anxiety caused me insomnia. The enemy would cause TORMENT in my mind every-single-night. This led to DEPRESSION AND SUICIDAL THOUGHTS. I would go for weeks without proper rest, and still attended church, playing the bass and serving wherever I was needed, while EMPTY and BROKEN.

Eyes haven’t seen, ears haven’t heard, what the Lord has JUST FOR YOU! It takes you surrendering. – He wants ALL of YOU! Allow HIM to guide you in all you do. #FaithWalking Developing a close relationship with God, CAUSES CHANGE! Try Him you will NEVER be the same!

“You will never go through the next door, or enter your NEXT, until you give God all of it!”

- “I want to give my best to You, I want to do what You ask me to. I want to go wherever You say, just say the words and I’ll obey. I want to live a life that’s real, I want to serve You Lord for real. For You deserve all this and more. So I give you more...” ~ I Give You More by Lawrence Flowers

After 4 years, I was exhausted… I was at the P.A.W. Convention in Atlanta, in 2018, not expecting to do anything but stay in my room. Sunday and Monday I didn’t go to any services. Tuesday I stopped by the ICEA Teen’s session. Sitting in a room with people was a MAJOR struggle. After the session, Evang. Tavian Harris invited me to come to the After-Hour service later that evening. I agreed, not knowing the Lord was preparing me for my deliverance. I remember it like it was yesterday. My sister and I were one of the first ones there, of course. As we walked in, I felt a heaviness come on me. I became jittery and couldn’t sit still. I walked in and out of the ballroom, pacing up and down the hallway. Then I went back to the room to sit for a few minutes. We had only been in the room for about 7 minutes, but it felt like hours! After the second attempt to sit in the service, Evang. Harris asked me what was wrong. I responded, “oh nothing”. She asked again, and I just remember her catching me as I almost collapsed. I was overwhelmed with emotion. It felt as though God Himself, touched me. Evang. Harris told me, “tonight is your night”. As the youth gathered for worship, she called me to the front. - THE SHIFT HAPPENED! I began to repent and worship, until I had no voice left! I felt deliverance! The remainder of the week, I was able to FUNCTION around people for the first time! During Saturday’s IPYPU’s Climax Service, Sufgrn. Bishop C. Shawn Tyson’s topic was, “Transition, Transfer, Transformation”; “It’s On You!” He said the transition that is getting ready to hit your life is going to happen intentionally! - this was STRAIGHT CONFIRMATION! That was all I needed to move forward! Now, I serve as the Arkansas District Council’s Young People’s Union President. I am thankful for MY, THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

ears ago, I led a series of workshops with our church’s Ministerial Alliance entitled Preaching 101 and Preaching 102. During these sessions, the ministers and I explored various topics that formulate the foundation of an effective and prolific ministry, such as hermeneutics, homiletics, the anointing and the art and science of preaching. Though we had many sessions in these series, one stands out as being particularly impactful in the life of those called to lead or preach. This session illuminated the relevance of giftedness and character in the work and life of a minister. A question was asked of Martyn LloydJones, “Who is the greatest preacher you’ve ever heard?”

emulation of what’s popular is the norm. Yet, too much emulation leads to a deficit of leaders who can operate within the uniqueness and idiosyncrasy of their own minds. Young ministers often feel the need to fit into a certain culture or norms. But, as far as I am concerned, we don’t need anybody to fit into a pre-established culture. We need ministers who know their job - the art (i.e. creativity) and science (i.e. structure) of delivering divine truths with the purpose to persuade. If you are going to adhere solely to traditional norms, you will never break out and become a leader. You will never be able to lead with confidence in the interpretation and application of the unique messages that God gives you.

or devalue the significance of the preacher’s Word. For instance, I had a preacher friend who died a couple of years ago. When he died, I received numerous phone calls from people who had heard different stories about what happened, and they were calling me to confirm. After speaking with my sources, I reported back that he did not die in the sordid way that was believed. One of the people that I told said, ”Well, I’m so glad, Bishop, because I have always enjoyed his preaching.” And being the antagonist that I am, I said, “Now, dear sir, if he had died the way that you thought, would you now un-enjoy his preaching?” This man did not have the capacity to make the distinction

Preaching Giftedness and Character Written by Bishop Noel Jones

His reply was, “I do not know that I can tell you who the greatest preacher I have ever heard is, but I can tell you this quite certainly -- the greatest preaching that I have ever heard is the preaching of John Hutton.” I ask you, as I asked my ministers on that day, what is the distinction between the two -- greatest preacher versus greatest preaching? I believe that effective preachers must be able to answer this question for two reasons. First, we must establish that a significant part of ministry, pastoring and hermeneutic interpretation is one’s ability to think -- and even more important is one’s ability to think outside of the box. In today’s fields of pastoring and preaching,

The second and primary reason I pose this question is for us to ruminate on two qualities that necessarily impact ministry -- giftedness and character. As the quote suggests, declaring that one is a great preacher takes into account qualities that may have nothing to do with their preaching, such as moral dispositions and mental tendencies. Many times, people will not receive a Word because they have heard something about the messenger’s character. In other words, there is a tendency to devalue the preacher’s message because of his or her perceived morality. Yet, the quality of preaching is not necessarily influenced by character. Receptivity of preaching can be stifled by the preacher’s character, but because it’s blurred to you does not negate

between the preacher and his preaching. Some of the most controversial characters in the Bible were the most prolific. Let’s insert David into this conversation. While he was one of the most gifted characters in the whole Bible, he was also one of the most questionable. We praise David for writing the 23rd Psalm. However, when you read II Samuel 12, did you stop reading David? We must have the ability to distinguish between giftedness and character. Preachers, do not let the religious subculture negate your growth in the Word by encouraging you to disqualify yourselves because of your secrets. Now, in no way am I suggesting that, as preachers, we be loose. That is not God’s intention.

101: But, at the same time, I don’t want you to abort your gift because of your shortcomings. Nor do I want you to question your calling because you are going through a character development experience. You can make dreadful mistakes, and I’ve made some awful ones, but as long as you remain connected to God, you can recover.

A

s I close, I want to share one last story. The great E.V. Hill preached a sermon in Chicago related to this very topic. In it, he told of a time that he questioned his own calling because of a character development experience in which he was involved. I don’t know what he did. He didn’t say what he did. But, Dr. Hill said that because of what he did, he was going

to quit, and he shared those plans with a friend. After he did, the friend asked him, “What did you just say?” And, Dr. Hill replied, “Man, I can’t go any further.” The gentleman then said to him, “Well, I guess you just gave God some new information. God is now going to take your gift because He found out something that He didn’t know when He gave it to you.” Of course, E.V. said, “Man, you’re stupid”. And, the gentleman responded, “I’m not the stupid one, Reverend. You are.” The gifts and callings of God are without repentance, which means that if you have the unmitigated gall and audacity to call yourself a minister of the Most High God, then I have to conclude that you were

“GOD’SITPROMISE “NOW SHALL SPRING TO PERFORM” FORTH”

chosen before the foundation of the world. When God called you, He knew the mistakes you would make. And if you were not qualified for His gift when He knew the end of your life even before the beginning of it, then He wouldn’t have given His gift to you. God didn’t guess when He hired you. Your life’s resume was in front of Him when He called you. So, as you navigate the often treacherous subculture of religion, please remember that your gift has nothing to do with your developing character; character development is a life-long process. Regardless of what you have done, now is the time to repent, connect with God and keep preaching. The world needs what you have.W

HOLINESS IS GOD’s IDEA By Bishop Earnest L. Pendleton

26

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

“GOD’S PROMISE TO PERFORM”

JULY/AUGUST 2020

T

here have been many conversations through time, concerning the subject of holiness. Many of us have our own viewpoints on what it is—and what it isn’t. Some say holiness is manifested in the modesty of our outward appearance, from clothes to makeup to hair, etc. Others say it’s a set of standards that reveal an inward character. But we just can’t go on what we think. We have to see what the Word of God says.

You can see in Ephesians 1:4, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love,” that holiness is not our idea but God’s idea. What is holiness? More than modesty and standards, holiness means to be set apart for, by, and unto God. It is a way of life that has been chosen by God himself. This calls for a separation from the world, while living in it. The Word commands us to “Love not the world neither the things that are in the world,” according to 1 John 2:15. Upon our separation from the world, God has promised that He will receive us and be a Father unto us. He promised to make us His sons and daughters. Living a holy life It may sound simple, but the enemies of our soul do not make it easy to live holy. Oftentimes, our view of true holiness can be clouded over by the world, the devil, and/or our flesh. It can be skewed or taken out of context out of convenience, confusion, or just plain ignorance. This was the case for the Pharisees. Jewish history shows how the Pharisees and scribes distorted the written law. They saw themselves as being holy. That’s why they did not receive the words of Jesus, to the point where He tells his disciples: “that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:20) True holiness was not what the scribes and Pharisees thought it was. God is holy in that He is different and distinct from His creation. His people must be like Him, distinct and separate from the attitudes and actions which characterized them as unbelievers. However, in many of our churches today, holiness is not being promoted. Apostolic churches must get back to promoting holiness in the lives of God’s people. We must not lose the message of holiness. And when we proclaim this message and the Word of God in truth, we must insert repentance, which means to change our thinking as well our actions. When the world sees us, they should see Jesus. That’s why we must live holy lives in this present world. As Peter explains: “As he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:15-16). Like Father, like sons and daughters We must be holy to be like God so we can be obedient to the Word of God as He commands it. It’s the Word that is preparing us for the coming of the Lord. And with the knowledge that the Lord’s coming is near, it is our responsibility to keep ourselves in His will. The will of God is that His people are to be a manifestation of His presence to the rest of the world. To do that, we must adhere to his idea of being like Jesus—holy in all our conduct. Bishop Earnest L. Pendleton is the senior pastor of Grace Apostolic Church in Washington, D.C. and is the diocesan of the DC, Del, MD District Council, 22nd Episcopal District of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc.

ADHD: A Renewed

PERSPECTIVE By Lillian Lockett Robertson, MD, OBGYN, FACOG

CRITICISM There is a lot of controversy surrounding the validity of ADHD. Critics argue that while the symptoms are real, they are the result of environmental factors and psychological issues. All of the major medical groups; however, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Psychiatric Association and the National Institute of Health recognize it as a condition that should be treated. TREATMENT AND DIAGNOSIS

W

e all know someone who just can’t seem to get it together. Maybe it’s that family member who seems to have an aversion to adulting. They shrink at family gatherings as everyone else proudly brandishes their accomplishments, reminding them of their lackluster resume of incomplete goals and unfinished projects. Perhaps it’s someone else’s child who is always misbehaving while you silently question the parent’s lack of discipline. For a moment, I’d like you to consider that there may be a not so simple reason that person in your life may be struggling and why suggestions like increased willpower and timeout may not be enough. ADHD DEFINED ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a medical condition marked by the sufferer’s chronic inattention, overactivity and impulsive behavior. It is usually diagnosed during childhood; however, many children manage the symptoms well, bypassing a diagnosis, only to discover they have the disorder when they cannot adequately handle the pressures of increased responsibility during adulthood. ADHD affects the frontal lobe of the brain, which is responsible for motivation, impulse control, planning, attention, judgment and decision-making to name a few. It inconveniently manifests itself as missed details and careless mistakes, not following through on instructions, incomplete tasks, missing deadlines, forgetfulness and losing necessary items like keys, eyeglasses or cell phones. What leads most parents to seek a diagnosis is when their child exhibits hyperactivity. A child may fidget a lot, moving in situations when it’s inappropriate, talk excessively and have trouble waiting their turn. ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder without Hyperactivity is marked by the same challenges minus the hyperactivity. This can result in a delayed diagnosis and treatment as these children usually aren’t disruptive. They may daydream, work at a slower pace, turn in incomplete work and be unorganized.

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

Since there is no cure for ADHD, treatment involves an array of options that help manage symptoms. Stimulant and non-stimulant medications work to increase the dopamine and norepinephrine, two neurotransmitters in the brain responsible for increased alertness, reaction time, motivation, attention and memory, improving concentration and focus. Adderall and Ritalin are two widely known stimulants; however, they may be accompanied with challenging side-effects. Nonstimulant medications facilitate the same responses with lessaggressive side effects. Psychotherapy, behavior therapy and social skills training are natural treatment options. As a parent, you can foster a supportive environment by ensuring that your child gets regular exercise, limiting screen time, and helping your child engage in exercises that encourage self-control such as managing expectations, taking a break and praising your child’s efforts. You should work closely with your child’s doctor to determine the best course of action.

CALLED TO COMPASSION As Christians, we have to trust that the people around us have been placed there for a reason and that we have been equipped to love them beyond their faults. The only way we can do that is to look at each other with the same love and admiration God looks at us. He does this, not because of who we are, but because of who He is. Like 2 Corinthians 1:4 so beautifully states, “... when they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”

GOD, Your

Provider in the

VALLEY By Evangelist Lynne E. Shivers

I felt compelled to write this article much different than I initially planned. I wanted to share the “upside” to the market’s “downside” and that this is a great time to invest. I also pondered on sharing the reasons for opening a Roth IRA, if you have not already. Yet, my spirit kept leaning toward taking a completely different approach for this issue. For the Holy Ghost kept impressing on my heart…Encourage my people.

I

n II Timothy 1:7 it says, “For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.” There is a spirit of fear sweeping across the land. The coronavirus has gripped people in fear of their health, in fear of losing their job, fear of not being able to pay bills, and the fear, the most insidious of them all…the fear that it will never change. Fear is a paralyzing agent of dark forces whose sole purpose is to stop you from, “looking unto the hills, from whence cometh [your] help...Your help comes from the LORD...” The enemy’s goal is to torment you with awful thoughts that God has abandoned you and seep fearful meanderings of unending, debilitating thoughts of what could happen. However, in the midst of your financial turmoil God is there. Look to the Word of God during your times of fearful thinking. Psalm 23:4 equips us with fight back words: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” Operative word? Through. You’re not staying in the valley nor are you setting up residence there. You’re just going through. “A valley is a low area between hills or mountains typically with a river running through it. It has a “head” where it begins in the mountains or hills, “sides” where it rises up on either side, a “floor” which is where the valley is most

flat. Some valleys have an “entrance” where the valley opening can be seen between two hills or mountains or cliffs.1” And if there is an entrance, there must be an exit. Look for the exit. Jesus is the exit of your valley. Speak life, not death into your finances. Don’t say you will never get better, be able to pay your bills on time or have financial breathing room. Instead, encourage yourself with words that uplift, reassure and inspire. God can bless you with a better paying job, a new business and open monetary options you never thought of! You are incredibly blessed, and you have a loving Father who knows right where you are. Your financial health is important to him, just as are your spiritual health and natural health. The Word of God is fully equipped to give you the sustainability you need during this time of uncertainty. He is well able to do exceeding abundantly above all that you could ask or think. And above all, He will show you He is your provider in the valley. https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valley 1

By Timothy M. Harris II ~Preface~

T

he intended audience of this book is the same as all the epistles of the New Testament: the saints. The writings of Paul, Peter, and Jude where specifically written to the saints (Romans 1:7, I Corinthian 1:1, Ephesians 1:1, Philippians 1:1, Colossians 1:2, 2 Peter 3:1, 15, Jude 1:1) and the churches (Galatians 1:2, 1 Thessalonians 1:1, 2 Thessalonians). While sinners may benefit from the wisdom in the epistles, perfect understanding can only come from seeing the Scriptures from the Christian perspective. Likewise, this book may have wisdom that can be positive for anyone, but to truly benefit from this doctrine, you must be a believer and a saint.

Unbelivers need Jesus too, but this book is focused on the people currently striving to live righteously according to Scripture. The atheist or, as the Bible calls them, the fool, cannot understand the things of God (Psalm 14:1). Most unbelievers do not have a head issue, they have a heart issue. When the Word went forth in the parable of the sowers, the grounds: wayside, stony, thorny, or good ground, was depicting the hearts of people (Mark 4:1-20). With logic, we can put facts together, but with the right open heart, we can know Jesus.

BOOK REVIEW

{{ WE ARE NOT LIKE THEM

Dear Readers, as you read “We Are Not Like Them,” you will find many statements that are followed by a Scripture reference. The author is encouraging all to please read the Scriptures while reading the book in order to gain better understanding of the teaching and the points intended to be expressed. In addition to providing clarity, these Scriptures will increase your faith and understanding in the Word of God. Every imagination, thought, opinion, suggestion, and idea needs to be lined up to the Word. We know many times that our imaganations need to be cast down according to 2 Corinthians 10:5. Readers, as you read “We Are Not Like Them,” you will find out how important it is to have our minds renewed, and not to be conformed to this world, because we are not like them, but our minds are being transformed and renewed to prove what is that good, acceptable and perfert will of God. Therefore, our thoughts, and opinions will not always line up with the lifestyles and concepts of the world when we follow the truth of God’s Word. If Jesus being perfect, with no faults to be found in Him, yet the world hated Him so much so that they killed/crucified Him. Jesus came to them with the truth, but many were offended. So, no matter what you say sin is sin, and someone will be offended by the truth, yet our Lord let His light shine by living and preaching the Word of God. Dear Reader, we pray that this book will not only inspire and encourage you, but it will be a good book for your personal library. God is in control and He promised never to forsake or leave us alone. - Evangelist Mona Thomas-Green

Father, in the name of Jesus

e enter into Your gates with thanksgiving and praise. We will bless the Lord at all times, His praises shall continually be in our mouth. We thank You for another day to come boldly to Your throne. We honor, adore, love and reverence You. For You are God all by Yourself and there is none other like You. You are the Lord of lords and King of kings. Even in the midst of this pandemic, COVID-19, You are still in control. Lord God, You are our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give away and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, Lord, You are our light and salvation, whom shall we fear, Lord, You are the strength of our life, whom shall we be afraid. Heavenly Father, continue to watch over all those that are incarcerated from the east, west, north and south and continue to keep them covered in the precious blood of Jesus Christ. The blood that never loses its power. Please watch over and assign Your warrior angel to stand guard, and heal any disease, pain, fatigue, or discomfort. also comfort and protect them from the COVID-19 virus in Jesus’ name. We pray also Lord, that You would protect their families and friends and bring peace to all who love them. Father, help us not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present our request to You. Casting all our anxieties on You, because we know that You careth for us. We ask for Your grace, mercy and strength for all that lies ahead. We are grateful You are with us all. You said you would never leave, nor forsake us. We will wait on the Lord and be of good courage. In Jesus‘ name we pray, Amen. Evangelist Johnetta Tate Portion of Psalm 9 (1-10) 1 I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will shew forth all thy marvellous works. 2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High. 3 When mine enemies are turned back, they shall fall and perish at thy presence. 4 For thou hast maintained my right and my cause; thou satest in the throne judging right. 5 Thou hast rebuked the heathen, thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name for ever and ever. 6 O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end: and thou hast destroyed cities; their memorial is perished with them. 7 But the Lord shall endure for ever: He hath prepared His throne for judgment. 8 And He shall judge the world in righteousness, He shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness. 9 The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. 10 And they that know Thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGMENT Kingdom Blessings, to my sister,

T

hanking our Heavenly Father for this time to sit and write to you in full understanding that it is by His grace we yet stand. I received your letter recently and was most glad to hear from you. For it was both a blessing and encouragement unto my Spirit. Mona, I’m saddened to hear of the hardships for which this pandemic has brought upon not only you, but so many throughout this country. The inability to fellowship with our brothers and sisters especially during this trying time. I know it has taken a toll on many. Within our organization we’ve been trying to reach out to people, even I from within these prison walls I’ve been trying to reach out to our leaders and keep them encouraged as they encourage their people as well. My sister, despite where I am, my assignment does not stop. For Isaiah 26:20 declares this indignation is just for a little moment and it will pass. Thus I encourage you as well to remain strong in faithful assurance that our Father will indeed supply your every need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus! My sister, more and more we are seeing Scriptures being fulfilled. Luke 21:22 declares “...For these be the days of vengeance that all things which are written may be fulfilled...” But Jesus encourage us in v. 28 when He says “... And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift your heads for your redemption draweth nigh...” My sister, I encourage you and all our brothers and sisters in the faith to look up, hold your heads high and know without a shadow of a doubt, our Heavenly Father not only got this in control, but has us as well. We who believe in THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

Him are going to come through this time stronger than ever before, you like so many others shall see the redemptive heart of our Father like never before. Rejoice even now mighty woman of God! God got this! As you so rightly said He Himself has promised never to leave or forsake us. Despite what it looks like or may appear to be He has not left us. Jeremiah 30:17 “....For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord...,” Isaiah 41:13 “...For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” See Mona, our hope is not in man, wealth, carnal possessions, or earthy substances, but in our Savior Jesus Christ. As our nation goes through this drastic time of peril, the men and women of God must truthfully begin to seek Him like never before. Jeremiah 29:12 “...Them shall ye call upon Me, and ye shall go and pray unto Me, and I will hearken unto you...” We must acknowledge the fact that only God can do what must be done to restore, heal, and deliver not only the United States, but this world as a whole. Jeremiah understood this in Jeremiah 17:14 “.... Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.” My sister, let me encourage you as I do myself, and to all those whom God blessed me to encounter. GOD GOT THIS! He sees and knows our hearts and He is just in His dealings and has promised to provide for His own even in the midst of this pandemic. I know it’s frustrating in the natural just as you said, it makes you want to pull your hair out! But, be of good cheer for God Himself is cleaning the messed up by preparing His Bride for Himself. We as His people have become consumed in “GOD’S PROMISE TO PERFORM”

our own agendas and forsaken His. But during this time we realize only His plan matters. As Luke 21:9-11 is unfolding take comfort my sister that you belong to the Most High, resting in the facts of v.18 “But there shall not an hair of your head perish.” God needed to get our attention as He did the Egyptians prior to the release. I pray that the people of God will adhere, acknowledge and truthfully repent and return unto our rightful place in God. Play time is over! Like you said we have grieved our Father far too long. But like the Prodigal Son, it’s not too late to come back home. Our Heavenly Father loves us so much and is ready, willing and able to receive, heal, restore and deliver us if we’ll simply get on the road marked home. For we recall in the text the son didn’t make it to the house before his Father saw and accepted him, but the son was in route to earnestly go home, and the Father met him on the road, embraced and escorted him home to a celebration. Luke 15:20 “... And he arose, and came to his Father, but when he was yet a great way off, his Father saw him, and had compassion and ran and fell on his neck, and kissed him...” Now that’s a WORD all by itself! My sister, I don’t know about you, but I get so excited when I talk about our Father’s love even in the storm. Regardless, if it’s Covid-19, incarceration, or any other hardship our God is still good and very good! All we have to do is just learn how to truthfully delight ourselves in Him, and giving Him thanks in the midst of every storm. As I close for now, I pray God’s favor with, upon and around you always. God bless you my sister until next time, please pray for me as I pray for you. Blessings, Demetric A. Johnson JULY/AUGUST 2020
