From the Desk of the Presiding Bishop

Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr.

Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc.

Greetings in the prefect Name of Jesus Christ! Just a few short weeks ago, the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. ventured on our second Virtual Convention. As we continue to navigate life in this pandemic and the new variant that has arisen, I am nonetheless comforted that God’s Hand has remained over our lives. We are grateful for His continued divine comfort, inspiration, innovation, and peace. The 2021 Virtual Convention was another testament that God can use uncertain situations to provide greater impact than we could ever expect—and He did just that! With tens of thousands of viewers for each day, the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World shared the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout households and communities as we did last year. While I continue to miss seeing each of your faces, our collective praise, and greeting old friends and extended family in convention center halls, I am truly blessed by another year of great programming, spiritual impact, and the move of God in this new digital space. Indeed, through it all, we are Positioned for the Promise, and we believe it shall be so! Now, as the school year comes upon us, we must keep all our educators, students, families, facility workers and school administrators in prayer as we confront the challenge of the new school year head on. Lady Brooks and I ask that you join us as we continue to pray for the health and safety of our educators and students, for the wisdom of the decision and policy makers, the parents and guardians who are juggling multiple demands as coeducators and workers, and for the grace as we all grow in uncertainty. Above all, we pray for future generations, that they may be positively impacted for the Kingdom of God, their holistic success and development, and for the peace of God to prevail as we re-learn learning in the COVID-19 era. Lady Brooks and I love you all to life, and pray God’s richest blessings be upon you! The Master’s Servants, Bishop Theodore and Lady L. Janice Brooks

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

FROM THE EDITOR Evangelist Neechy Dumas

Welcome to the Sept/Oct 2021 Edition of the Christian Outlook Magazine! I’m grateful to our presider, Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr. to be given the opportunity to serve in this capacity. The Bible declares that the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord (Psalm 37:23) and most assuredly our Presiders steps have been ordered as he has prayerfully navigated the P.A.W through one of the most challenging times in history. It has truly been a pleasure to work under his anointed leadership, and I look forward to all that God has in store for us as we have been “Positioned for Promise,” our hope-filled theme for this year.

I

f 2021 has taught us anything, it’s that a lot can change in the blink of an eye. For many, this has been the year that we have questioned what we believe to be “normal.” And perhaps, this is what the Lord wants us to learn; to continue to fully submit to His will, no matter how difficult or unconventional the situation may seem. Because ultimately, normal may never come back…but Jesus still is. And, this year, even in the midst of a pandemic, we’ve celebrated many wins as an organization. One in particular is our successful migration to a more robust online payment and tracking system, making ordering and processing of The Christian Outlook, The Apostolic Way Commentary and Sunday School materials more efficient. As technology changes and knowledge increases, I’m excited about the changes that will allow us to efficiently serve you better. It is my prayer that this transition showcases our efforts to stay current in the manner in which we serve our amazing supporters.

filled with such history and legacy. As you’ll notice on page 2, we’ve listed our yearly supporters. These are leaders that have made a commitment to have a consistent subscription to the Christian Outlook. And, many of these leaders even go as far as to share these copies with those in health care facilities, senior citizen residences and even with those who are unable to regularly attend church services. It is because of your unwavering support and generosity that has enabled us to reach so many new souls, and for that we are truly grateful. Within these pages filled with challenges and triumphs, it is my earnest hope that you are inspired by the courage of our Front Line Heroes, that you find hope in the living testimony of Elder Samuel L. Simmons and that you are motivated to build intentional wealth from the words of Sister Ashley Brewster. May you continue to be fully persuaded that God is capable of performing every promise made in His word, and that you find yourself in the right place at the right time, to receive every blessing that God has in store for you. This year, be determined to be “Positioned for Promise.” Blessings, Evang. Neechy Marketing & Publications Director @Neechy | www.Neechy.com www.BigDripThreads.com

As always, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the many readers and subscribers of the Christian Outlook for their support of our organization-wide magazine,

“Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works...” - Revelation 2:5

uestion? Have you ever sensed the Holy Spirit pleading with you to return to the “on-fire” love you had for Him when you first received your salvation?

What we see here is Jesus did with the church of Ephesus when He diagnosed their spiritual condition and told them that they had left their first love. (See Revelation 2:4) He also showed them the steps they needed to take in order to reverse their course and rectify the situation. This is seen in Revelation 2:5, where Jesus told the Ephesians believers how to return to the white-hot passion they’d possessed in the early years of salvation. He said, “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works…” Notice that Jesus urged the congregation in Ephesus to do three things to correct their deteriorated spiritual condition:

10

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

1) remember, 2) repent, and 3) do the first works. I want to focus on the word remember… The Ephesian believers had lost their “first love”—the simplicity and passion that marked their early love for Jesus Christ. This tells us how far they had unintentionally drifted from the spiritual zeal that once characterized them. For this reason, Jesus urged them to stop everything they were doing in order to “remember” the precious fellowship they used to enjoy with Him before they became so spiritually sophisticated. Now, let’s look at the word “remember,” which is a translation of the Greek word mneia. In ancient literature, the word denoted a written record used to memorialize a person’s actions, a sepulcher, a stature, a monument, or a tombstone. The fact that the word mneia can denote a sepulcher is very significant in

“POSITIONED FOR PROMISE”

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

the context of Revelation 2:5, because it suggests the Ephesian believers’ early experiences with Christ had become buried by years of activity. Like dirt on a grave, the busyness of ministry had buried what was once precious to them. So, by using this word mneia, Jesus implored them to dig through the clutter of their schedules, routines, and activities and unearth the early memories of their faith when it was tender and new. (So they are called to Remember their past) Furthermore, because mneia (“remember”) also refers to a statue or a monument, we see that certain memories should forever stand tall in our lives and never be forgotten. Memories, however, must be deliberately maintained and cultivated if they are to remain vital in our hearts and minds.

In the early years of the Ephesian church, the vibrancy and excitement of the Ephesian believers inspired the passion in congregations and spiritual leaders throughout the years. But as the years passed, this zeal for the things of God slowly ebbed away. Knowledge increased, but the believers’ fiery passion for Jesus diminished. Undoubtedly, as the Ephesian church grew, so did its members’ schedules, routines, habits, customs, and traditions. They were so busy serving Jesus that they lost their intimacy with Him, and it is likely that they experienced a loss of joy in their service, since joy is impossible to maintain without a vital connection to the Savior. So then, our love for the Lord must become contagious as we invest our time having daily devotions in the presence of the King.

Like an unmarked grave, important memories can be easily forgotten. Adults forget their childhood; nations forget their heritage; and Christians forget their early beginnings with Jesus. So in Revelation 2:5, we discover that churches can forget their past. David said, (Ps 103:2)—“Praise the Lord, I tell myself, and never forget the good things He does for me.” David told himself to never forget the good things God has done. We also must make up our minds to never forget God’s goodness in our lives. Point of Observation: I have discovered that God is so gracious to us. He knows we have spiritual amnesia. He knows that we are forgetful. So he gives us memorials. He commands us to do certain things that will serve as reminders. Now, here are three practical ways, among others, to combat spiritual amnesia. 1. Think: (Psalms 77:12)—“I will ponder all your works, and meditate on your mighty deeds” 2. Thanks: Engage your heart in gratitude for what He has done. (Psalm 77:12)—“I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds” 3. Tell: Once we’ve spent time remembering and thanking the Lord for the great things He has done for us, the joy of those memories should overflow in our conversations with those around us. In Joshua 4, we find this instruction specifically regarding children.” (Joshua 4: 21-22)—“When your children ask their fathers in times to come, “What do these stones mean? Then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’”

PREACHER’S CORNER

WHERE ARE THE CHILDREN? By Bishop Sherman L. Merritt, D.D.

J

esus spent a lot of time with his disciples trying to make them understand their assignment and responsibilities to him. In current times, it seems to be that so many people have been so caught up with themselves that they have forgotten their responsibility of producing sons and daughters of God that will take their place in life. Unfortunately, we are losing a generation of potentially gifted young people because we have failed to invest in them or teach them their responsibilities in the work of the Lord or train them to serve. In fact, we owe them an apology because we have given them a false sense of what Christianity is truly supposed to be and have consequently made it difficult for them to understand what is right. Somehow, we have repeated the same things down through the history of time. We do not seem to be learning from our mistakes and experiences but are instead repeating them over and over again. We have parents who have been unable to see the abilities possessed by their own children. They continue to treat them like little babies but have to realize that they are grown now and have children of their own—Yet are

12

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

still being treated the same. The church has the same mindset when it comes to cultural development. In the eyes of many, young people never seem to be capable of doing anything in the form of leadership even though they have a love for the Lord as they should. It is very disturbing that these same kids were not given a chance to perform their God-given desires in the church. They were never seen for who they truly are. Now, they have experienced college, graduated with degrees and honors, and begun successful careers. Some have become teachers in schools, but they will not teach in the church . They do not even want to attend church. Over time, they have lost their desire for the church. They have lost all interest and motivation in the church. Their potential has been crushed because the church was not willing to involve them or invest in them in any meaningful way. Look around and ask yourself, “Where are the children?” They are not in conventions. There used to be thousands of young people in attendance, but now if you look around, it seems like the convention has been reduced

“POSITIONED FOR PROMISE”

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

to a nursery or babysitting. Thousands of young people used to be excited about being there and competing for offices. We have to stop and think about what happened to them. The problem we have now is that we have not had any dialogue about what happened to them or how we can attract them back. The scripture says when Joshua and the elders lived, the people feared the Lord, but there came another generation that knew not the Lord. That is frightening to hear and to know that we might be producing the same kind of generation. We should have learned from our past mistakes to avoid repeating the same things. I mentioned the lack of and need for dialogue and want to make it clear that if we do not develop the younger generation, we will end up with no future and no replacements for the current leadership. It seems that we are content sitting back while all of our leaders get older. Remember again that the Lord says in Revelation 3:2 “Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die…” We have to take action before it is too late. There are a lot of young people who still love the Lord, but they are confused about how to act on that. We must embrace change and stop trying to live in and recreate the past. If we do not, we will continue to push them away and make them feel like they are not important or an integral part of the church. Furthermore, we have failed to give our children covering. Our young people are our future, so we must be careful not to be in a place where all of our older leaders are getting old at the same time with no replacements in sight. The children should be mentored. But, where are the children? They are not in the church. We used to have Monday night young people classes and services to teach them how to carry out the service and to be trained in leadership roles. We have no national evangelists that we can recommend for our churches

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

that need help or that we can prepare for taking over. Therefore, we have churches but no one to pastor them. There is an absence of successors. The Bible says they call the young because they are strong, but the old are wise. In reality, the church cannot do without the youth. If there are no youth, there is no growth. If there is no growth, there is no future. Where are the children? They are not in Sunday school. If we were wise, we would utilize spiritually developed young people to reach today’s generation that the older ones cannot reach. After all, young people have been involved in every change that God has orchestrated. The Lord said to Jeremiah, “When you were in your mother’s womb, I called and appointed you.” He also called these young people, so we must develop them by presenting an example. They are part of His plan. If Daniel and the Hebrew boys had not been trained, they would not have been capable of displaying the power of God. Similarly, David was only about 15 years old when he was anointed and look where he ended up in history. He had leadership skills to lead the people even from a young age. Joseph was only 17 when God gave him a dream which led him to save a nation of people. Our job is to extract the God-given power by working with young people and connecting them with the older leaders. The Lord recognizes the value of having the youth in His divine plan. They have dreams. They have visions. But more importantly, they have the energy not to be killed but to be directed. Young people have the ability to draw other young people whereas older people are losing that ability because of the age gap. Paul told Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:12, “Let no man despise thy youth.” The motivation for this scripture is that he thought people would not respect him because he was young. Our actions towards young people can make them feel that way, which is why we have to be mindful and continue to question, “Where are the children?”

“POSITIONED FOR PROMISE”

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” - James 5:16 KJV

I

can recall during the time, over 45 years ago, when I was praying for and witnessing to my Mom (and other family members) about “really being saved” (Acts 2:38); she told me that she was already saved…though we didn’t even use those terms in my former church, where she still attended! She said that something was wrong with me and was determined to prove that I had been brained-washed or even bewitched. She started going to different churches and Bible Studies to gather information to validate her conclusions. The more she searched, the more she found that…maybe I was correct; especially about “Speaking in Tongues” and the Baptism of the Holy Ghost! Anyway, weeks into our “Being Saved Conversations” Mom was diagnosed with tumors in one of her breasts and was subsequently scheduled for surgery. She was an accomplished seasoned educator and the well-respected secretary of Jefferson County Georgia largest A.M.E. (African Methodist Episcopal) Church! Prior to salvation I was a minister in the A.M.E. Church. However, when all of this occurred, I was a member of Emanuel Tabernacle in Cincinnati, Ohio, and we prayed, fasted, and interceded greatly for my mother’s physical healing and her soul’s salvation! My Mom was examined and prepped for her surgery the day before the scheduled procedure and sent home. That night as she too was praying while watching Christian TV, the host said that God was healing a woman with breast tumors who had already been scheduled for surgery! My Mother immediately examined herself and did not feel any lumps in her breast! God had instantly dissolved (removed) all of them!! The next day when she went for her surgery appointment the doctors could not find any tumors! Hallelujah! That healing led to her eventually embracing the full truth concerning salvation! A few months after the healing miracle, our family had a special gathering in our native Avera, Georgia, that included five of her six sisters, four of their husbands, and several of their children from a number of different states. I also excitedly returned from Cincinnati to this quasi-family reunion because her sisters (who also attended A.M.E. Churches in their own cities) had agreed to allow me to share my “new found” plan of salvation! Some had even talked about getting baptized again.

About the AUTHOR THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

Well, when we all got together, an amnesia epidemic infected my whole family and no one wanted to talk to me about Jesus and getting saved. When it was time for me to return to Cincinnati, I began to pray for direction because I knew that God had sent me to be “a light” to my family! After talking to God and my Pastor (Elder Paul A. Bowers) I made arrangements to extend my trip. Then I reminded my family that they had said that they wanted and needed help with the ever-amounting issues and even devastating problems that all of them were facing. It immediately got real serious…and Jesus moved on their hearts! Before the conversation was over my wonderful loving family decided to “Try Jesus” and go down in His Name and allow Him to fill them with the Gift of the Holy Ghost! After many unsuccessful inquires to find a church for the baptisms in our area (There were no Apostolic Churches in our entire County); I went to the Augusta Yellow-Pages (Richmond County) and after many failed attempts finally found an Apostolic Church that would allow and assist me with the Water Baptisms (There were no PAW or “Black” Apostolic Churches in Augusta at that time). Did I mention that the husbands, including my father, wanted no parts of this “Stuff!” So, my mother, her sisters, and my cousins (some of whom had bought a whole kilo of drugs with them from “The City” to “Throw Down” in the Country!”) went with me to this little seemingly “All White” Apostolic Church in Augusta, Georgia, in April of 1976 to be Baptized in the Name of Jesus! You’ll have to read the next issue to find out what GOD did that night and how all of our lives…including the Saints at that Church were changed, enhanced and impacted forever because “Somebody Prayed for Me!” “Spoiler Alert!” My mother became a highly anointed Bible Teacher, a 1stLady (when my Baptist father became an Apostolic Pastor), and a Powerful Praying Mother in Zion until she recently went home to be with the Lord!!! Glory to GOD!!!! Other Family members that were baptized that night have become prominent church leaders, even Pastors in the PAW and other Pentecostal Organizations. The Miracle is Not Just What GOD Did…It is also HOW He Did it!! The Process was and still is Powerful and Profound! I promise that You will be amazed and give God Glory!!! Your Faith will be increased and your doubts released! You do not want to miss Part Two… Next Issue!!! You will hear how… “Hundreds” of Family members have been saved since that one night in Augusta! Somebody Prayed for US!

Suffragan Bishop LaVelton J. Daniel is the Senior-Servant Pastor of the Greater Emanuel Apostolic Temple, Cincinnati, Ohio. PRAYER

I’M STILL HERE By Elder Samuel L. Simmons

I

was born in Bruton, Alabama, and stayed there until I was about elementary-school age. One of my most memorable recollections then was when I would go fishing and hunting with my dad. Those were meaningful times for me. My father wasn’t saved but he was a religious man. I know this because of some of the things he would say to me…things like “Sam, understanding is one of the greatest things in the world.” I never forgot that. When I got older, I learned that this statement was related to everything, and that once you have an understanding, people can find a way to sit down at the table together. In fact, I related it to Proverbs 4: 7: Wisdom is the principle thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. My father would travel a lot – looking for work. At one point he traveled down to the Florida Keys to try and find farming work or any other opportunities. One day he decided to pack up the family and head to New York to look for work in the city. While we were enroute to the city, our car broke down in Buffalo. Looking back, I can see this was God’s will for us. We were a poverty-ridden family but we still had hope. God blessed us to find a place to live. We lived on Main Street by the railroad tracks in the ghetto for a while until we were able to graduate from the ghetto and move on up to the projects! It was there that I was initiated and became entangled with gang activity. I joined the gang because that’s what you did to survive. But God kept me. I did what gang members did - not even considering the danger level. But even during that time, God kept me. I flirted with a number of drugs, including THC, purple haze, heroin, cocaine, Acapulco gold, alcohol, and a horrible diet. But God kept me. I was big into nice cars, the night life and many other things that pleased the adversary. I have been shot at, and I’ve been shot, but I’m still here. One day, God spoke to me while I was at the club, and told me that I would never return there. When I said this to friends, they thought I was high. But as God isn’t a man that He would lie, I never again returned to that club. In 1974, God saved me. I attended Greater Emmanuel Temple in Buffalo, New York, where I served under Bishop William Crossley. Several months later, every day I woke up, I would feel a strong tug (that felt like a magnet) pull on my heart. That pull led me to read my Bible. I accepted my call to the ministry in 1975. Bishop Crossley let me know that he knew of my ministry call. This was confirmation to me. The burden of the pull got lighter once I yielded and submitted to the will of God. I became a student of the word and even began to build my own library of books.

When God blessed me with a job, I was 19 years old. That job was a true and great blessing to me because it rescued me from my gang-banging lifestyle. As a matter of fact, I stayed on that same job for 43 years! In 1988, my job transferred me to Atlanta, Georgia. The late Elder Marshall Taylor encouraged me to attend Bishop Stewart Reese, Jr.’s church, Bethesda Cathedral. There, I met a wonderful lady named Jocelyn and married her in 1999. I served in this ministry as a Sunday School teacher, president of the brotherhood, as well as armor bearer to the ministry’s founder.

It’s hard to believe I’ve been in ministry for 40 plus years, but I am just as inspired now as I was when the Lord first called me. It is with total humility that I serve my current pastor Suffragan Bishop Stewart Reese III and Pastor Emeritus, Bishop Stewart Reese, Jr., as Joshua served Moses. My life is for the glory of God. My sickness is for the glory of God. I told God that it would be fine if He took me home (as if He needed my permission). Cancer cast me down but it didn’t destroy me. I am still here for a reason. God has seen fit to allow me to live – even with this cancer. If God thinks I’m worthy enough to be used, then He is certainly worthy In 2012, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma – a cancer enough to be praised. As I desire to reign with God, I have of the plasma cells and the bone marrow. It can damage to be okay with the suffering. Certainly, it’s no goodness of the bones, immune system and red blood cells. In July of the my own but in fact the hand of the Lord that was upon me same year, get this: I became a stem cell donor of my own 50 years ago when I was a gangster, and still rests upon me stem cells. And with that infusion, my Lord and savior came today. I give Him all the glory. in and regenerated my system. I am so grateful to God for His healing power. God’s people prayed and the Lord raised me Our gifts make room for us and bring us before great men up. I thanked Him for the victory over cancer. (Proverbs 18: 16). Maybe cancer has actually come to me as a gift. I am grateful for God’s call, and I’m open for whatever “Cancer cast me down but else He wants to use in me for His glory. I thought I knew a lot growing up gangster back in the day; but there is one it didn’t destroy me. I am thing that I now know for sure…that all things work together for the good of them who love the Lord and are the called still here for a reason.” according to His purpose. There are three keys by which I live It has since become very apparent to me that this body in and share with people: which I live – really doesn’t belong to me. How do I know? Have a prayer life Eight years later, God decided to use me again. In September, Love your neighbor 2020, I was diagnosed with abdominal cancer. But, because I Know God’s Word know it’s for His glory, I continue to bless His holy name. God healed me before, and I trust Him. If God wanted to take me If I’m only here so that I can be a living testimony for others home, He would’ve done it a long time ago. Even though I so that they don’t go down the same rabbit hole, then so be am currently still taking chemotherapy, I don’t blame anyone; it. I have no sad story to tell. I want to live so that God can and I most certainly don’t blame God. I love Him for what use me – anytime and anywhere. And that includes even if He has done in my life. I am grateful for every day that He I’m sick. Through all of my tests, I could’ve lost my mind, but allows me to be on this earth and serve as His witness. It thanks be to God who continually gives me the victory. So, has been appointed unto us once to die, but I encourage the whatever my lot, the life that I’ve lived has simply taught me people of God to not live in fear or in fear of dying. Many to say -- it is well. It isn’t great with my body, but it is well have been afflicted and some are no longer with us; but even with my soul. And, it is only because of God’s goodness and His mercy that -- I’m still here. with cancer, I’m still here.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

TEACHING: A DIVINE ASSIGNMENT By Elder Paulette Carswell

P

aul said when Christ ascended on high, He gave gifts unto men. The gifts are divine, for “the perfecting of the saints…for the edifying of the body of Christ and the work of the ministry.” The purpose of the gift is for God to dwell in His people through the Holy Spirit that will empower and equip people for the work of the ministry. As believers in the body of Christ, we have been given spiritual gifts to exercise in the body. One of those gifts is the gift of teaching. Paul called the teaching ministry a “high calling.” This calling means the teacher’s voice is that of God to his people. “But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal” (I Corinthians 12:7) Christ paid the ultimate price for the gift He gave to His people. It is the ministry of teaching that spreads the knowledge of the Word of God and provides a foundation on which we are to stand. Low standards, little training, little time, little effort, and little prayer will leave the church with a person who merely teaches a class, having little to no impact on the student’s life. Teachers are more than presenters of the truth; they are developers of lives. Teachers have a high calling; they are investing their talents for eternal dividends. The ability to impart knowledge with spiritual results in one’s life is one sign of the gift of teaching. Another sign of the gift of teaching is whether you have a passion for teaching or you are just doing it because you were asked. Your gift may be revealed to you by your pastor or someone close to you who can see it in you. It may also be revealed after you minister in several areas of the church. Being in the will of God, “filled with the Holy

Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18) and praying to Him for direction will also assist you in knowing if you have the gift of teaching. We all have a gift, no matter how large or small it may seem to us in the ministry; these gifts are underserved and we should be humbled by them. We are to stir up God’s gifts and bless the world with His Word as teachers. Paul addressed Timothy twice about his spiritual gift. “Do not neglect your gift…Be diligent in these matters” (I Timothy 4:14-15). He also told Timothy to “Stir up the gift of God” (2 Timothy 1:6). This meant he was to exercise it rather than neglect it by not using it. As we stir up the gift for Teaching we would be wise to make sure our own fire stays kindled. My love for teaching began upon being asked to help a Sunday school teacher with her preschool class that was growing at an exponential rate. As I sat in the class that day over thirty seven years ago, I remember thinking about the impact teachers have on students’ lives. I was raised in Sunday school and remember well the lessons taught. This impact is so important it can change a life forever; it changed my life at the age of nine. With much prayer and fasting I asked the Lord to impart in me the passion and the will and help me further my resolve and ability to teach His people the Word of God. My hunger for knowledge, reading, and teaching grew as a result of this prayer. I still desire to see God’s people grow spiritually and naturally through the teaching of the Word. STIR UP THE GIFT - FAN THE FLAME!!! TEACH THE WORD!!!

Elder Paulette Carswell serves as the 2nd Vice President of the International Christian Education Association of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. She resides in Texas and attends Zion Apostolic Temple, pastored by Suffragan Bishop Leon Parker and Dr. Charlotte Parker.

want to go to my retreat carrying a gloom and doom report. Besides, I needed the faith and support of the sisters, whom I knew could get a prayer through. I shared the news and the sisters rallied around me, by putting me in the middle of the circle and prayed the prayer of faith for a returned negative report. When we finished praying, a huge rainbow appeared in the window for all to see. We rejoiced and believed that GOD had given us a sign, that he heard our prayers and all would be well.

PROPHETIC DREAMS CHANGED MY LIFE By June Summers Hairston, Ed.D.

I am a dreamer, and sometimes my dreams are prophetic. In March 2012, I woke up feeling very troubled about the night’s dream, in which I saw myself in a large sterile operating room laying on the table, on my right side in a red dress. As I reasoned in my sleep, I thought that I was dead. I was so emotionally overwhelmed. I remember embracing my body rocking back and forth. The next morning while pondering the dream, the only thing I could surmise was that I was about to experience a life-threatening situation, that would result in being in the hospital. Laying on my left side made me think, the dream would be a turning point in my life. The experience would be serious and life-threatening, but I would survive, and thrive. This dream stayed with me for weeks as I continued to ponder its meaning. About a month later I had another dream. In this dream my Mom and Dad came to visit me in Seattle. At the time, both of my parents had been dead for 16 years. In the dream, my Father greeted me with such joy and exuberance stating, “Hi June!” My Mom, on the other hand pointed her finger at me and said very tersely, “How are you doing, June?” The tone of her voice was so strong, I thought she was reprimanding me. Suddenly, I woke from the dream.

When I went for the biopsy, the doctor pointed to the image on the projected screen, and said, “See that there – it needs to come out.” I thought, I didn’t have time and wanted to delay, but the doctor insisted that I take care of it immediately with surgery, and follow-up treatments of radiation and possibly chemotherapy, depending on the results of my oncotype score. If the test results from my tumor presented a score of ten of more, that would mean chemotherapy. Thank the LORD, to the doctor’s and nurse’s surprised my score was “ZERO”. They all said, they had never seen a score of “ZERO” before. I had the surgery and hardly experience any pain. By the end of the week, I was feeling great! Thank the LORD for healing! After surgery, I went back to Snoqualmie Falls to meditate and pray. Listening to the mighty waters cascading 270 feet down to the riverbed was very comforting. I took a picture of the falls, and a bright rainbow appeared in my picture. I believed it was another sign that GOD heard my prayer, and sealed it with a promise, that he was with me. JESUS healed me! He used several dreams to get my attention; the Snoqualmie waterfalls, and the sound of its mighty waters to calm me; and the love and prayers of my husband, (Bishop Hairston) who spoke life over me, my family and friends who believed with me for a MIRACLE in the name of JESUS. I keep the picture of Snoqualmie Falls on many of my digital platforms, as a reminder that GOD worked a MIRACLE for me and gave me a second chance in life! For this, I am truly thankful!

That morning as I reflected on my second dream, I started sorting through a stack of mail, that I had neglected opening for months. I noticed a letter from my health care provider, reminding me to schedule my mammogram appointment. Graduate school kept me so busy, I missed getting my mammograms for at least four years. However, because of the two dreams, I immediately called my doctor’s office to schedule an appointment. To my surprise, I was told the previous caller had just cancelled her appointment, and I was offered to come in that same week. I took the appointment and had a routine mammogram experience. A week after my appointment, the doctor asked that I come in for an ultrasound. I was told, it was nothing serious, they just wanted to get a clearer picture. After the ultrasound, I was asked to return the next week for a biopsy. By now, I was getting a little concerned with these backto-back appointments. I delayed going back the next week, due to my Women of Grace’s Retreat, which was scheduled the same week. I didn’t

to beg God for anything. Whenever anyone would say they were going to pray for me I would tell them how I wanted them to pray. I would ask them to pray a prayer of thanksgiving: “Thank God for my healing, don’t ask Him to heal me, that is already happening.” The cleansing process was not only natural but also spiritual. I made sure that I maintained a forgiving attitude, had a rich prayer life to include positive affirmations. The nourishing process also included having only positive conversations with family, co-workers and friends. The healing process for me included the total person, body soul spirit and affairs. I also told the Lord I did not want people to give me messages from Him. I wanted Him to talk to me Himself.

HEALED OF STAGE 4 OVARIAN CANCER Suffragan Bishop Charlotte Petty

In January of 1984, a few days after my annual physical exam, I received a phone call from a medical specialist. He told me that I needed to come to see him. I was sitting on the exam table when he came in and asked me, “Did Liz tell you that you have cancer?” Liz was my regular doctor and she had not spoken to me about cancer. I received this news at approximately 2: 00 p.m.; I remember the time because of the devastating news. I lived in Olympia and was an administrator for the State and had some afternoon assignments. As I left the clinic, I had two choices: the first was to go home and “cry my eyeballs out; ” the second was to return to work and complete my assignments as if I had never heard the report. Because I chose to return to work and completed my assignments for the day, this marked the first step to my recovery. If I had chosen to succumb to self-pity, I would not be here 37 years later telling this event of my life. After a second opinion, I learned that my illness, stage four ovarian cancer had a three-to-five-year life span and the doctor told me that he did not know how much time I had left.

It was April 1984 as I awakened. I said out loud, “I am healed” and it seemed as if an electrical shock went through my body. Went to be examined and the doctor found no cancer. As advised by Evangelist Iona Locke, Addie and I traveled to El Paso, Texas, to consult with an Iridologist and Nutritionist. She examined me and found no cancer. July presented another challenge and in August 1984, I was hospitalized for major surgery and the Lord reassured me that He was the Healer. The most exciting day for me was when the doctors came to my bedside and told me that my faith in God or my own process had worked; they found no cancer. I also returned to regular eating, and in April 1996 I was blessed with my husband, Trustee Clinton Petty who loves to cook nutritious meals. I am so grateful for Divine intervention, Jesus Christ, family, friends, and co-workers who walked this journey with me and since April 1984 and August 1984 I have lived a healthy life.

On the day that I first received the news, that evening, when I got home, I immediately called my parents, who lived in Holly, Michigan; they prayed for me and assured me that I would recover. I also called my older sister, Dr Addie Davis, who lived in Seattle; she prayed for me and called a friend in Canada to pray. The friend called me and told me to begin thanking God for my healing. At the age of five I was baptized in Jesus’ Name and at the age of seven I received the Holy Spirit and had an exciting relationship with the Lord. I decided to delay any medical treatment and try natural resources. I asked a friend, Glynnis, to go to a health food store, tell them about my predicament and get some information for me. One of the most important things that I needed to do was to change my eating habits; this was not easy, but I did it. I invested in a juicer and began drinking fresh vegetable and fruit juices. I also became a vegetarian who ate only uncooked vegetables. This was a fun adventure because of the recipes in the Uncooked Cookbook. Wheat grass juice and Par D’ Arco Tea was important to my healing process. 1. During my illness, the Lord inspired my nephew, Nate J. Davis, Jr., to invent a healing supplement “Juice Works” with excellent results. I am a strong believer in prayer; however, I do not believe it is necessary

Charlene Edmonds First giving honor to God, who is the head of my life, and to my late Bishop Lawrence R. Robertson who taught us to strictly have faith in God. I also want to give honor to my First Lady, Dr. Lillian Robertson who inspired me through my journey with cancer. I love and appreciate you. In 2013 while giving myself a breast examination I felt a lump the size of a dime. The lump felt like a navy bean that was moveable, it was something I had never felt before. While waiting for a doctor’s appointment my lump doubled in size. This is when fear decided to raise its ugly head. I remember having a vulnerable moment thinking to myself, man this could possibly kill me.

“POSITIONED FOR PROMISE”

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

I found out I had progressive stage 2 breast cancer while I was at work. The woman who called me had no empathy at all. She was very quick to advise me I had cancer in two places in my body. I knew when I left work I had to tell my family. As a mom of seven children, three grandchildren, and a wife, this was not going to be easy. I told them my diagnosis; I cried, they cried but then something rose in the room. We began to pray as a family and decided we were going to trust God with the process.

positive. God’s blood will never lose its power.

Charlene Edmond was a born in North Carolina. She has been married for 32 years. She has eight children, and six grandchildren. Charlene has worked as a community activist for 34 years. She has attended Emmanuel Apostolic Church for 35 years. Charlene has been cancer free since 2014.

I live in a small community, so my First Lady who is an obstetrician suggested that I seek treatment 45 minutes away from home. I was so blessed to be given that advice because there were so many skilled doctors who came up with a plan to treat my case. After praying and having unwavering faith, it was discovered at my next cancer scan that my tumor shrunk from a stage two to stage one. Though my tumor shrunk, I still had an aggressive treatment plan. I had to do chemotherapy for about six months. Chemotherapy is rough. You

literally feel like the poison they are injecting in your body. I remember feeling drained, nauseous, having a metallic taste and mouth sores. At first, I didn’t expect to lose my hair but by the second treatment, my hair started feeling like a Brillo pad and started falling out in lumps all at one time. After chemotherapy I elected to have a double mastectomy. I remember feeling like a freak after seeing myself the first time in the mirror. After the double mastectomy I had to complete months of radiation. The radiation was so bad that it caused second degree burns where my breast use to be. I will still say with all of this, without God I would be nothing. During my cancer battle God assigned a group of people I needed. I want to shout out my friend Julie who gave up time, money, and constant companionship for one whole year. I am also thankful to have had a supportive husband, church family and Pastor because they did not allow me to give up on myself. Cancer is scary but with an untimely faith it can be beat. God had a purpose for my life. My purpose in life is to uphold as many women as I can. To pray and speak into as many people as I can. And to win as many souls as I can for God’s kingdom. If I could encourage anyone who may be going through cancer, remember who your Father is and you are covered under the blood of Jesus. Lastly, make sure to have the right team for your medical needs. They need to listen to you; remember you are the patient. Remember your diagnosis is not a death sentence. Continue walking in the will of God, and pray that His will to be done. Pray for others who are battling cancer, even during your weak times. Be affirmed that you are a child a God, and remain THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

BUSINESS

BOSS MOVES Evangelist Neechy Dumas

E

ntrepreneurs…business owners…future business owners…pull up a chair, grab a cup of your favorite beverage, and let’s have a discussion…a real…transparent discussion about running a successful business. The highs and the lows.

In December of 2020, I launched an inspirational urban brand, Big Drip Threads - www. BigDripThreads.com. In the years prior, I’d already executed a very popular and successful clothing brand for women that included custom skirts, custom dresses and flower pins. Launching an Urban brand was for sure new and completely out of my comfort zone. This was a totally different type of customer with a different marketing focus. While I truly believe that this was launched under the instruction of the Holy Spirit, I was still nervous and made my share of mistakes along the way. I recall one day being super excited to ship out the next set of NO FEAR tees and hoodies, only to realize that we’d printed the wrong color ink on the tees. Black ink on white tees…instead of white ink on blue tees. Are you kidding me?!?! This was for sure an issue, because we had several clients who’d pre-ordered and paid for the white with red ink. I was already up against a shipping deadline and the number of hoops that I was about to have to jump through was already giving me a headache! Time. Money. Resources…all wasted--or so I thought.

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

I had 2 choices here: Get angry and quit out of frustration or, create a campaign around the wrong color tees. I mean, after all, I was the only one on the entire planet who knew that I had an entire shipment of the wrong color tees. The general public wasn’t aware. So, I took the photo of the shirt, shared it on Instagram and transparently shared with the audience what had happened. I donated some to those who were hospitalized or in rehab, and sell the rest. To my surprise, that particular t-shirt SOLD OUT. Whoa! Totally unexpected. We often hear the phrase: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. THIS IS SO TRUE! Here are 8 tips that I’ve learned along the way:

1. PRAYER

There is absolutely no way to have a successful business without God being at the center. Our talents are given to us by God, and we must use them for His glory. Running a business gets crazy; but God will give you the wisdom to not only obtain wealth, but also to develop strategies to help you navigate your day-to-day decisions.

2. SEEK WISE COUNSEL

Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of an accountant. The cost of their expertise for a one-hour consultation far outweighs the cost of you finding yourself in a tax wreck. “Where there is no [wise, intelligent] guidance, the people fall [and go off course like a ship without a helm], But in the abundance of [wise and godly] counselors there is victory.” - Proverbs 11:14 AMP

3. NO MAN IS AN ISLAND

When we look at some of the most successful business owners, we notice that many of whom, at some point have partnered with someone else. What you’re lacking…someone else has great knowledge in. What they need support in, you’re an expert. When the two worlds come together, you now have a pool of resources and an audience that would take you months or even years to reach on your own.

the same. My journey is not your journey. Comparing yourself to what you see online will only delay your success. Focus on what you do well and execute that to the fullest. Focus on your customer, provide great customer service and offer amazing products/services.

7. MENTOR or PARTNER

I recently sat with a friend of mine who is starting a new clothing brand. Within 15 minutes, I walked him through, step by step how to ship his clothing, where to find packaging and how to pay for it. For any business owner, having someone to hold your hand through any portion of the process is priceless.

4. DELEGATE!

I gotta be honest, I’ve tried to wear the superhero cape many times but it’s not realistic…at…all. I spoke with one of my amazing mentors and he reminded me that action figures and superheroes are fictitious characters. So, when we try to literally become superheroes by taking the entire weight of our business on our shoulders, it’s a recipe for disaster. Utilize friends and family for small tasks. Use projectbased work-for hire websites to complete some of your daily tasks. Consider hiring a virtual assistant or look for interns at your local college.

This is probably one of the things that I regret not having during the initial part of my journey; having a business mentor. Typically, this is someone who has already journeyed successfully through the path that you are now on. They’ve already scraped their knees, discovered the productive shortcuts and have lived to tell about it. The challenge, often times, is finding someone that you trust with your baby…your business. Prayer must be key in this area. When I finally prayed for this, God gave me the unexpected! Not a mentor per se, but for sure a businessman who is well versed in the areas that I am weak in.

5. FREE STUFF

Yes, it cost to run a business and the word FREE has never paid any of my bills. BUT…there are certain phases of your business where you should make some of your services or items complimentary for promotional, charity or relationship building reasons. This will bless you in the long run. I’ve donated the No Fear tees to many organizations around the globe. The advertisement, exposure and positive chatter is worth its’ weight in gold.

8. NO FEAR ALL FAITH

We have the ability to walk in confidence and trust that God will supply us with everything that we need to enter into business meetings, boardrooms, conversations with suppliers and resolve big problems.

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].” - II Timothy 1:7 AMP

6. DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS

When I look at my social media thread, I see a ton of BOOKED AND BUSY and SOLD-OUT posts. No kidding… this has totally wrecked my world at times because I’ve compared myself to what I saw everyone else doing. Silly me, I learned very quickly, that social media cannot be the gauge for your business. No two businesses are

REDEFINING

MONEY

INTENTIONAL

WEALTH

Here’s the tricky thing about money: many work hard to earn it, but even harder to spend it. Securing the bag is so much more than making money, it’s about keeping money. You cannot build wealth if your bag has holes in it!

I’m Ashley Brewster and I attend Greater Emanuel Apostolic Temple, Cincinnati, Ohio. My pastor is Suffragan Bishop LaVelton J. Daniel. I graduated from The Ohio State University and attended University of Dayton Law School. After my first year, God completely shifted my career focus from law to finances. I began my career as a stockbroker for Charles Schwab. Now, I am completing my final year in my MBA program at Miami University with a concentration in finance while working as a Wealth Associate Advisor at Wealthquest, a wealth management firm. Because helping others handle money God’s way is such a passion of mine, I also provide personal coaching on money management. Here are three tips for beginners: Understand Wealth, Live Authentically, Be Intentional. UNDERSTANDING WEALTH Many people think wealth is: You can buy whatever you want. Wealth isn’t your income. In financial terms, wealth is your net worth i.e. assets (things you own free and clear) minus your debts. A statistic that compelled me to understand finances said that Black American median wealth was headed to $0 by 2053 due to debt. If nothing changes, Black Americans as a collective will owe as much as they make. This is not biblical. In Proverbs 13: 22, “A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children.” We cannot do that if nothing is left. Here are some general statistics that you might find interesting: 1. 2. 3.

80% of Americans have some form of debt. Avg. debt is $139,000 for a couple with mortgage. For People of Color, the % of debt to income is higher due to lower incomes.

LIVING AUTHENTICALLY My parents showed me that if you worked hard, you would get paid. My godmother taught me the importance of building wealth early. Wealth and money have often been taboo and misinterpreted as misguided affection. But the Bible is filled with lessons on being good stewards over what God’s blessings.

THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

As I work with others, I am finding a few commonalities: First, many people don’t know much about finances but are embarrassed to ask. For many, financial education is limited to improving their credit score. But that is not the whole story. Please ask if you don’t know. Second, too many people are living above their means in order to appear wealthy. Keeping up with the Joneses is expensive! Wealth is about what you keep not what you spend. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you be more authentic. • •

Can I afford this (without buying on credit)? Am I being a good steward?

Third, once people get the information and want to do better, they are successful when they are disciplined. BEING INTENTIONAL I paid off $20,000 of debt by age 23. It was not easy, but I was intentional because I had a long-term vision in mind of being debt-free. Here are some steps that I took and write about in my book, No Debt Zone, Your 9 Step Guide to A Debt Free Life that helped me: 1.

2. 3. 4.

Assess Your Financial State (which is a snapshot of your personal financial position, listing what you own, what you owe, and income) Create a Spending Plan/Debt Pay-Off Plan Raise Your Income Save 6 Months of Expenses

The way out of financial burden is not simply through just prayer and fasting. You must adopt an effective strategy and apply God’s Word. There is hope and freedom for anyone, no matter how big your problem. Remember, the only thing that the Bible instructs us to owe each other is love. Romans 13: 8 reads, “Owe no man anything, but to love one another…” KJV
