“WALKING IN THE PROMISE OF GOD”
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022
From the Desk of the Presiding Bishop
Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr.
Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc.
Praise the Lord! Mother Brooks and I send our love to you and greet you in the wonderful name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Our hearts are full, and we are so overwhelmed with love and joy to have seen so many of our beloved saints and friends from near and far at the 2022 Summer Convention. Our gathering in St. Louis, MO just a few short weeks ago was full of powerful preaching, anointed praise and worship, life-changing sessions and we felt the Spirit of the Lord in every moment. It was just so good to be back in-person after two full years without fellowship! Great is the goodness of our God! A very special thank you to the Midwestern District Council, under the leadership of Diocesan Bishop Larry Jones, Council Chairman District Elder Oscar Houston, and the MDC Executive Board for hosting us at America’s Center Convention Complex. Thank you to every auxiliary and ministry leader, to all support teams, to all volunteers from near and far, and every person who worked diligently behind the scenes to make our Convention a success. Without you, we would not be the great organization that we are. Each person willing to put their hands to the plow is what shapes our legacy and our impact. You helped to make our vision for this convention come alive. From the bottom of my heart: thank you! Now that the summer has ended, we know that the school year is swiftly upon us. We must keep all our educators, students, families, facility workers and school administrators in prayer as we confront the challenge of the new school year head on. Mother Brooks and I ask that you join us as we continue to pray for the health and safety of our educators and students, for peaceful and healthy homes for our students, and God’s prevailing power in our schools against all manner of violence or harm. We pray for future generations, that they may be positively impacted for the Kingdom of God, their holistic success and development, and for the peace of God to prevail. Lady Brooks and I love you all to life, and pray God’s richest blessings be upon you! The Master’s Servants, Bishop Theodore and Lady L. Janice Brooks

mong the most treasured commendations afforded me was notification that my image would be imprinted on a local building in recognition of my contributions to our community. The fact that it was unsolicited and that the project was birthed out of appreciation for those that have served the community is humbling. The painting adorns a building along one of the historic thoroughfares in the city. The facility houses Unlimited Futures Inc. It was conceived as a small business incubator for prospective minority entrepreneurs in the Fairfield West community of Huntington. I was one of four original incorporators driven by the objective to provide proper

training that would eventually transform our people from culture of job seeking, to one of career building. We wanted our people to think in terms of becoming lenders rather than borrowers.

I came to Huntington in 1983 to pastor what was then Full Gospel Mission. On the evening of my placement as pastor of the seventeen-member congregation, I became the youngest member of the church at the age of twenty-seven. At that point our immediate household consisted of my wife and one-year-old son. Renna and I had made a mutual agreement that when we started our family, she would step away from her outside job and be a stay-at-home mom until the children entered school. We were aware that this would mean an income reduction, but our comfort was in an assurance of the quality of care, nurturing, and protection that our progeny was receiving during their formative years. Our sole income was generated from my profession as a teacher and basketball coach in the local school system. Without stable finances through the church, we made the three-hour commute each weekend. After almost three years, with the solid encouragement of my wife, we eventually moved to our new town. There are no large cities in the entire state of West Virginia. When I arrived, Huntington was the largest city in the state at about 64,000. The African American population was approximately 2,600. While canvassing just two blocks away from the church, I found that some residents didn’t even recognize the name of the church. It was my objective to heighten the image of the church, and it was clear to me that we would have to draw from a more inclusive cultural base. Particular to the African American population, most of our churches are identified by the name of the pastor. With intentions of heightening the recognition of the church using name association, I intentionally became heavily engaged in the community. As a result, from among the relatively few African Americans that were engaged in “power” community, I was soon sought out for membership on various boards, commissions, and committees. Over time, I’ve served as president of the Black Pastors’ Association, Huntington Human Relations Commission, and the NAACP. Also, I served as a board member of a local hospital. I’m currently president of the City Police Civil Service Commissioner, member of the Marshall University Board of Governors, and member of the Mildred Mitchell Bateman Hospital Board of Governors. Prior to retirement from the public school system, I served on the County Strategic Planning Committee, President of my school Faculty Senate, Title IX Coordinator, and in 2001 I received national recognition as a Milken Foundation Teacher Award Winner. But it’s been my greatest pleasure to serve as pastor of Full Gospel Assembly for nearly 39 years, and to be recognized as an inspiration to the citizens of the Greater Huntington community.

FORGIVENESS By Elder Christopher Wilkes
O
ne of the most liberating feelings in this life is the ability to forgive yourself and the people who have offended you. Often, we say the wrong things, make the worse decisions and when these events occur, the Holy Spirit will convict us. It’s up to us to take heed to our Lord’s call and His Word so that we can make the necessary adjustments. The enemy wants us to magnify our mistakes in our minds. He wants to make us feel as if there is no redemption and that eternal damnation is eminent. There are also some people around us who try to keep us in a perpetual state of guilt and shame. The Scripture states in 1 John 1:9 that “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I wholeheartedly believe that if you give all your past mistakes to Jesus that He WILL deliver you from whatever guilt and shame that’s continuously trying to torment you. Another aspect of forgiveness is the assurance that God is merciful, and His compassions fail us not and they are renewed every morning. This is found in Lamentations 3:22-23. Every offense is NOT intentional, but many are blatant. It’s best to peacefully approach people if you are offended by their actions. You might discover that they were totally oblivious that they have offended you. It’s a terrible thing to harbor resentment but it’s even worse to hold a grudge and the person does not know that they offended you. Being an Elder, I’ve been to countless court proceedings of people from all walks of life. The beauty of some of those court cases is the joyous experience when the plaintiff is guilty as charged but the Judge takes the wooden gavel and hits the sound block and pronounces that the charges are dropped. The judge usually doesn’t say anything else to the plaintiff. As it is in the natural, so is it in the spiritual realm. When God drops our charges, it does not matter what anyone has to say from that day forward. It does not mean that you were not guilty of your charges, but it says that God simply loves you, created you to be an overcomer and wants to give you a second chance. Don’t let the court of public opinion attempt to try you over and over again for things that God has exonerated you from. There are some people who have yet to forgive those that have died years ago because they never got closure or an apology from them. The freedom of forgiveness is actually for YOU! On the contrary, unforgiveness is like drinking poison and waiting for the person that offended you to die. Sometimes, forgiveness isn’t easy but with prayer and consecration, the healing process can begin. Sometimes it’s best to share and express your hurt with a dear friend, your Pastor or a health care professional if you so desire. I pray that we all can get to a place where we extend grace and mercy toward people as God has extended His grace and mercy toward us!
Elder Chris Wilkes has been in ministry for 30 years. He is an ordained Elder of The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. He serves as an associate Elder at Higher Learning Ministries under the leadership of Suffragan Bishop Samuel E. Wright, Jr. in Petersburg, Virginia. Elder Chris Wilkes is the author of a book titled “Life Quotes”. T
he Uganda District Council of the PAW, the 62nd Episcopal District, held its second Virtual Conference on April 9, 2022. Under the leadership of our diocesan, Bishop Dr. Derek G. Pierson, the Virtual Conference was a success. Bishop Pierson strategically sent the Chairman, Pastor Sebastian Kyaligonza, to the west side of Uganda and the Vice Chairman, Pastor Simon Ssemakula, to the east side of Uganda. Each regional leader gathered approximately five hundred people in each section. Our Diocesan, Bishop Pierson, was able to minister to each section LIVE via zoom and video chat. Each section was able to have a LIVE service and enjoy virtual praise and worship from the US Branch of the Uganda District Council and from the churches in Uganda. The power of God met us in each section. We had souls baptized in Jesus’ name in the river and baptized in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues as the Spirit giveth the utterance. During the conference everyone was fed a nutritional meal. In addition, during the session a total of 36 Bibles in their native language were distributed and well over a dozen bicycles were distributed to assist the pastors to preach the gospel throughout the villages. The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World is actively present in Uganda, East Africa. Bishop Pierson states that our mission is to share the love of Jesus Christ, to preach the powerful message of the cross and to grow the kingdom of God in Uganda.

THE POWER OF A
MALE FIGURE By Aaron Oliver
I remember as a little boy growing up in Orangeburg, South Carolina, it was rare to see a man working in any of our schools. Many worked in factories like Zeus and Koyo. As time went on, I became a first grader at Brookdale Elementary School where I met my first male teacher, Mr. Clyde Jobs. Every time I saw Mr. Jobs, he either wore a shirt and tie or khakis and a polo shirt with loafers and displayed a great degree of professionalism. This was extremely different for me because I had never seen a male teacher. It was in the fourth grade at Brookdale where I met my second male teacher, Mr. Anwar Hodges. He taught a single-gender class of ALL boys, which was also something new to me because I was accustomed to a classroom of boys and girls. Mr. Hodges took on the challenge and made learning so exciting that I dreaded going to my other classes after I left his class. He was a young black male figure who embodied what an integral black man should be. After completion of my K-12 education, I had the wonderful opportunity to enroll in Claflin University, the oldest HBCU in South Carolina. It was here I met another African American male educator, Dr. Anthony Broughton. The first day that I met Dr. Broughton, he walked into the classroom and began to rap about who he was, which was a way to introduce himself to the class. I was blown away because I never considered, or even experienced rapping/ music being used as a vehicle to help educate students. Having positive African American male educators as teachers truly inspired me to become an educator. officers. However, educators like Mr. Jobs, Mr. Hodges, and Dr. Broughton have saved the lives of so many children by affording them the opportunity to thrive and excel, while broadening the perspectives of what a man should be. Although I was fortunate to have a great father and an awesome mother that raised me in a Godly home, there are many students that are products of single parent homes. According to www.prb.com, in 2009, there were 19.6 million children in the United States who were products of homes that were headed by single mothers (the same year that I was in fourth grade.) In 2020, according to www. statista.com, 15.31 million children lived in households headed by single mothers. These statistics are relevant because they confirm the scarcity of men in homes. As a future African American male educator, it is important that I provide a classroom environment where my students are afforded a safe space to thrive and succeed. I encourage every father, grandfather, husband, uncle, or any man to take a young person under their wings, and to never compromise that which is moral and integral. Afford my generation a sure foundation that will last even after they are gone. Give them JESUS, and never be afraid to be transparent. Show them that prayer works, the importance of financial literacy, and to use their creativity for God and not the devil. As my favorite quote states, “The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively.” – Bob Marley

Parenting: THE
JACKSON
FAMILY
By Hollie Jackson
A
s I sit here reflecting over the past 10 years, all I can say is Whew! Lord, you are so GOOD! Who would have thought I would be a widowed mom of six with a testimony after the unexpected tragedy.
On January 6, 2012, our family found ourselves welcoming child number six, Aaliyah! Wow! Throughout our 17-year marriage, Marcel and I always had a running joke about being fruitful and multiplying. Things were going so well, our family finally seemed complete. The foundation was set! We had plans for continued success and happiness. Well, I never thought in a million years how much the phrase, “We plan, God plans and God is the best of planners” was going to test me and change our world, as we so comfortably had known it. It was a normal Tuesday evening in early summer of 2012. I noticed I didn’t have enough chicken from what I had cooked the night before, so I baked about six more pieces. Taking the chicken out of the oven, I had a random thought about what it would be like when it is just me and Marcel, after all of our children are grown and gone. I chuckled and said, “yeah that’s going to be the life.” I went to his job to take him a plate. He came out and said “thank you, Baby.” I said with a smile, “you’re welcome, Babe.” Before going to his second job of running security for a downtown Detroit nightclub, Marcel quickly came by the house. Rushing, the last thing he did was tell our son to take the dumpster to the backyard, then he said “Love ya’ll, see ya’ll later, bye.” I never thought that would be the last time we’d see him alive.
Marcel would normally call when he was on his way home. However, this call would be different. When I answered the phone, the world stopped. I could barely breathe. My husband had been shot! Walking into that hospital was surreal; it felt like I fell into a sinking black hole. The ER was packed with so many people looking at me. A couple hours later, we received the devastating news that my husband died in surgery. I felt like I was going to collapse. Overcome with the greatest emotional grief I had ever experienced, my head started spinning at the thought of telling my children. That drive home was the worst feeling in the world. Just like that, I became a widow at age 38, left here with six children to raise, alone. Jesus, what just happened to my life? Arriving home, the look on my children’s faces when I told them what happened is one I will never forget. Their emotions and reactions were a gutwrenching blow that was beyond overwhelming. This was a huge story not only in Detroit but across the country, because Marcel was well known and respected in the security world. He handled executive protection for everyone from Michael Jackson to Beyoncé and Jay Z. He was also a leader with the Detroit 300 community activist group. That day felt like a whirlwind. So many people came by after the news hit. I had no time to process what just happened. Trying to block out the heaviness all around me, I held my baby Aaliyah real close to me, making her like a protective shield not letting anyone take her out of my arms for that entire week.
In the early morning hours around 3:20 am of June 20, I was sound asleep. Our home was peaceful and quiet. My cell phone rung, I woke up and saw the caller ID that said “Marcel-Husband” I didn’t think much of it because The day of the funeral was Sunday, June 24th our 17th THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK “WALKING IN THE PROMISE OF GOD” SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2022 THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK “WALKING IN THE PROMISE OF GOD” MAY/JUNE 2022

wedding anniversary. That morning our church had a Children’s Day program, which my children all still agreed to be a part of. There wasn’t a dry eye in the entire church when they performed. My daughter, Gwendolyn, then 5 years old sung “His Eye Is on The Sparrow.” Emotions filled with happiness because they did so well, but heavy sadness because we were hours away from the hardest days of our lives. Thousands of people came to pay their respects, from community leaders to politicians. It felt like I was in a dream. Nevertheless, it was a beautiful Homegoing. After everything was over, the visitors slowed down because people had to go back to their regular lives. It forced me to figure out how to continue. Thinking about my future was very scary because I didn’t think I’d become a widow at such a young age. These years have brought many difficult moments, highs, and lows, but we never lost faith that God is able. One Scripture I read often is Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans and thoughts I have for you, plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” I had to take one moment at a time. I pushed through the years with many sleepless and tearful nights. Having questions and so many doubts. My prayer life became different. I was now living the songs that I sang with the praise team, but the lyrics hit differently now. I still had a family to raise, a home to take care of, and I had no time to sit and lose myself. It was all on me to continue our family legacy. This was our new life. I had always prided myself on being a good wife, after 17 years I didn’t know anything else outside of being a wife and mom. One of the hardest things I had to do was find out who I was. Our support system was great! THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
Charles H. Ellis, our family, friends and my ‘Sister Circle’ who came by my house every single day for a full year straight, my silent Angels that still to this day come through with unexpected financial blessings, and the Yatooma Foundation who has blessed our family tremendously through the years. I am very proud of my children, and what they’ve accomplished. My oldest Najidah is expecting her first child. Jala graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Theater; she is an acting coach with the Detroit Youth Choir, and she will soon be relocating to LA to pursue her acting career. Tamia is graduating in June with a degree in Animation from Rhode Island School of Design, one of the top art schools in the country. Tarik is an advert entrepreneur, who aspires to be in law enforcement. Gwendolyn, an A student in high school, is a part of the Detroit Youth Choir who came in second place on NBC’s AGT in 2019, she is looking to expand her music and acting careers. My little Aaliyah, now 10 years old, doesn’t have the same experiences we had with her dad, but we still tell her stories of how wonderful he was. She is a very bright all A student, and I can’t wait to see what great path she will be on in the future. As for me, I’m still pushing! Going after my purpose, not stopping no matter what! Quitting is not an option; I have 6 reasons. I am a testament that you can make it through the hardest trials. There will be JOY in the morning. No matter what, you can live and start over again! It’s definitely not the life I chose, but it will definitely be greater than what I could’ve ever imagined, because God promised it! It’s not over; my story is still evolving. I will always say, Hallelujah Anyhow! Testimony still being written…

PAW SUPPORTS UKRAINE
ince the war began in February of 2022, The Well of Living Water Church started helping those who flee to the south of Odessa region, looking for a safe place and requiring our help, both - physical and spiritual.
Every day we provided food and different supplies to several hundred people. With the constant financial support of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. and Presiding Bishop Theodore L. Brooks, Sr., we were able to extend support of our humanitarian ministry and to reach many more people, as our own resources were very limited.
“WE APPRECIATE AND PRAY FOR EVERYONE WHO DONATED TOWARDS THIS MISSION IN UKRAINE. UNITED WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN MANY MORE LIVES AND REACH MANY MORE PEOPLE FOR JESUS CHRIST!” – Pastor Oleksandr Ilash - Ukraine
Thank you to the members, delegates and leaders of The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc., who have so graciously donated over $158,000 to Ukraine relief efforts. The PAW continues to uphold Pastor Ilash and the citizens of Ukraine in prayer for peace, justice, safety and protection. ishop Roy C. Dawkins was born December 24, 1939, in Lake Village, Arkansas, to his late parents, Johnnie and Robbie (Coleman) Dawkins. Raised and educated in Kansas City, Kansas, he was the oldest of 12 siblings. He was preceded in death by one sister Reola Thieklin (Ronnie), and two brothers, Melvin Dawkins and Johnell Dawkins.
Bishop Dawkins gave his Life to Christ in 1963, baptized in Jesus’ Name and filled with the Holy Ghost under the Pastorate of Bishop Alfred Boyd (Mother Lillian) in Davenport, Iowa. He was a faithful member and was a praise leader, and sang in the church choir. He also served as an Associate Minister with Mom-In-Love, Pastor Rena Dawkins, at the Apostolic Truth Temple. In 1967 Bishop Dawkins met and married the love of his Life, Charlene (Taylor) Dawkins, and has been happily married for 54 years. They are the proud parents of two remarkable sons, Anson Roy Dawkins and Eric Dion Dawkins, National Gospel-Recording Artists “Dawkins and Dawkins,” and one beautiful daughter, Angela Lloyd. Pastor and Lady Dawkins are also proud grandparents of 3 beautiful granddaughters- Kristen, Ranan, and Jaya and one amazing grandson, Parker. In 1975 he, along with the faithful members and supporters in Columbia, Tennessee, built a beautiful church and wonderful congregation and successfully served as Senior Pastor of the Mt. Zion Temple in Columbia, Tennessee, for ten years. It was difficult for him to leave that ministry, but God led him to make the change. In 1985 God called Pastor Roy C. Dawkins to Steubenville, Ohio. The Lord has blessed him in this ministry at the Greater Zion Temple Family Worship Center with a wonderful congregation for the past 37 years. Souls were taught how to live a “saved life” through the God-given wisdom he shared with so many. He has encouraged many with his remarkable Life and knowledge of God’s Word. Pastor Dawkins received his Bachelor of Theology and Religious Education degrees in 1981 in Nashville, Tennessee, and his Master’s Degrees in Theology and Religious Education in 1997. In August of 2005, he received his Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Ministry; in October 2005, he received the Doctor of Divinity from Aenon Bible College, Indianapolis, Indiana. In 1989 he was elevated to the office of “District Elder” in the Southeast Region of the Ohio District Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. Pastor Dawkins was consecrated as “Suffragan Bishop” in the Ohio District Council of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World on July 4, 2002. As Suffragan Bishop, he faithfully served 14 churches in the Southeast Region of the Ohio District Council (O.D.C.) of Pentecostal Churches, Inc. He loved the Southeast Region, and the Southeast loved and respected him to the highest. He formerly served as the Vice-Chairman of the O.D.C. for three years (plus) and the Chairman of the Ohio District Council for six years. He has also served on the Aenon Bible College Board and the Budget and Finance Committee of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. Bishop Dawkins served on the Board of Directors of the O.D.C., Liaison for the Ministers’ Wives and Minister’s Widows Alliance of the O.D.C., and newly appointed 1st Vice President of P.A.W.S.C. (Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc., Seed Churches Agency.) This year, 2022, he was recommended for elevation to a National Honorary Bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc. by Diocesan Bishop James W. Gaiters (First Lady Marcia Gaiters) and approved by Bishop Theodore Brooks (First Lady Janice Brooks) and the Official Board of Directors of the P.A.W. Inc. He was looking forward to being consecrated to this position at the P.A.W. Convention in St. Louis, MO, this August 2022. But instead, Bishop received the most important Elevation on June 8, 2022, to be in the “PRESENCE OF THE LORD.” He was well known, loved, and respected in the Ohio Valley community. Bishop was anointed and appointed for the time God allowed him to be here, a true “Man of God.” He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife Charlene, Dawkins, Wintersville, OH; 2 sons, Anson Roy Dawkins, Tacoma, WA; Eric Dion Dawkins (Talisha Graves-Dawkins) Los Angeles, CA; 1 daughter, Angela Lloyd, Little Rock, AK; 4 grandchildren, Kiristen Dawkins, Los Angeles, CA; Ranan Dawkins (Fiance, Marshall Glass) Tacoma, WA; Jaya Dawkins, Tacoma, WA; and Parker Alexander Dawkins, Los Angeles, CA. ’m always tickled when I hear about those who are “Professional Students”. You know, the people who are always in school or obtaining a new certification. Those that are constantly learning.
We often times think of learning as something that happens at school, and stops once we finish our education and join the workforce. But learning can— and should—be something that we continue to do all the time. In March of this year, I completed my certificate at Cornell University for Women in Business through their online program. Initially, the thought of taking on a 5-month certification while in the midst of my other entrepreneurial endeavors seemed daunting. The extra hours of study time per week that would be required, the deadlines and the assignments that would need to be completed…sigh. But I knew that I wanted to progress, even further than where I am today. I wanted to learn more, so that I could share with other women who are in business and if nothing else, I never want to assume that I know everything or that the way I’ve always done something remains to be the correct way. One thing I’ve learned over the last two years is that the way that we do things in business and technology is constantly changing. I, for sure, don’t want to be behind the 8 ball. And, if I can be honest, I also had something to prove to myself… that I had the ability to step out of my comfort zone… and that I was humble enough to learn something new. As I went through the course, I realized the areas in my business where I could not only benefit and implement changes, but also how I could take my new knowledge and share with others in an effort to avoid pitfalls related to setting up your business entity; having a proper business model, identifying investors, defining your primary market summary, and such. While there may have been areas that I was already familiar with, I gained insight on quite a bit of new areas as well.
regards to business knowledge within my existing circles. Bringing on a Coach…someone who had already made all of the mistakes and was aware of the blue print of what actually works…was the lifeline that I never knew I needed. My Coach was able to not only give me the Cliffs notes version of how to access more funding, but he was also a great motivator in my business. My point is…don’t be afraid to learn something new. There are a few elementary foundational elements of doing business, but the business world changes. I now have a greater appreciation for the “Professional Student” …the one who is always open to learning. Even in the midst of gaining additional knowledge, here are a few of my thoughts: Don’t oversaturate your thoughts with so much learning that you actually fall behind in action. I recall days where I spent hours on YouTube searching out a specific topic. Initially, it was productive, but after about 4-5 videos, I was really hearing repetitious info…and when I heard something different, I ended up frustrated and confused. Set a focus, set a time frame and stick to it. At one point, I wanted to purchase every online course, purchase every pdf and attend every conference. That’s information overload. Complete one course before you purchase another. Certifications are a good way to take a little bit of time to increase not only knowledge, but your worth. Go from booking consultations at $100/hour to $150/hour because you’re now more experienced. By becoming certified in a particular field, you can set yourself apart from other professionals and gain access to specialist funding, scholarships and contracts. Moreover, certification can benefit your clients by showing them that you are well-qualified in your field. Unlike the learning or training we do at school or through professional courses, continuous learning is never “finished.”
During this year, I also solicited the support of a business coach. In many areas, I felt that I’d hit a ceiling with THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK “WALKING IN THE PROMISE OF GOD”

The Power of
HEALTH
HEALING Through the Foods We Consume by Dr. Darice D. Brown
I
n the beginning, when God created the Heavens and Earth, “it was good.” The Earth has everything that would bring increase and healing. When Jesus sat on the right hand of God with all power and authority, He declared, “It is finished”. (Mark 16:19 and John 19:30). Jesus completed His mission on Earth. Yet, He prepared the way so His followers would be successful and ensured that everything needed for success was established and complete. This Scripture often is interpreted as the power to walk this journey but often overlooked that Jesus Christ provided for the usage and consumption of things from the Earth (Genesis 1:29 and 31). The human body’s ability to self-heal is a phenomenon that our Creator can only explain, and scientists are still in awe of its resilience and healing properties. However, scientists and food experts have capitalized on the importance of eating foods from the Earth. Many Christians have missed the blessings and uniqueness that our Creator has created within. The fundamental unit of the human body is the cell. Every second we are alive our bodies work to return to a natural state of homeostasis or equilibrium. Each cell is a unit that is constantly adjusting its composition, working to restore itself, and maintaining balance. Another way we can significantly improve our body’s powerful self-healing is by eating healthy, nutrient-rich foods that God created and called “Good” (Genesis 1:1112). Countless studies have concluded that changing to a fruit and vegetable enriched lifestyle can reverse the effects of hypertension, positively impact diabetes, lower the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancers, and the list can go on.
40
to purpose but also put one in the position to change the trajectory of an entire culture. Daniel was bold in his position and trusted Yahweh through the power of His creation of an enriched vegetable lifestyle and promised health. The current recommendation is to eat three types of vegetables and two kinds of fruit every day, and when purchasing, aim for variety to get the most nutrients and appeal. To maximize the nutrients and appeal, buy and serve different types of fruit and vegetable that are in season, and choose for freshness and quality. Eat with the season, naturally ensuring the body gets a healthy mix of nutrients and plant chemicals. Try something new and buy new fruit and vegetables as part of your weekly shopping. Let the color guide you; choose a combination of the rainbow colors. Keep snack-size fruit and vegetable portions easily accessible in your refrigerator. Add fresh fruit and vegetables to the family favorites as additions to your menus. Use various fruit and vegetable textures to add interest to your meals. God has already given us what is needed to succeed during this spiritual journey. He has given our bodies healing mechanisms, the process of new cell formation, and the food of the Earth to keep the healing properties flowing perpetually. Healing comes in many forms, and the body reflects the Creative power of our Lord when feeding the body the correct nutrients from fruits and vegetables, which will bring healing, restoration, prevention of disease, clarity, weight reduction and a sound mind. MENTAL HEALTH
MANAGING MENTAL HEALTH IN DIFFICULT TIMES Dr. Rayvann Kee, II, Psy.D., MBA
ver the past few years, we experienced much. Everyone has a baseline measure of their mental health and all of us have more than likely experienced an increase in emotional and psychological distress that we can attest to. It doesn’t take anything away from you to acknowledge that even with salvation, some things move us to feel negative emotions and worry. Living in a world that is experiencing a pandemic that doesn’t want to resolve, where there is racial tension and divide, where political figures are corrupt, where there is economic distress and inflation, where there is civil unrest due to the push of agendas that directly oppose our faith, where there has been less of an opportunity to come together as we had in times past and the constant use of virtual platforms with our spiritual support groups and church families, where the gun violence is constantly increasing, and with mass shootings that include the victimization of children, with loss after loss, and with the lack of mental health resources in churches and so many other areas in which we live, there is a real need for strategies on how to best manage all of this and to engage in the self-care needed to keep us healthy mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Here are some suggestions to help you better manage your mental health. This is not an exhaustive list; however, these are a few tips that can help immediately:
1. Be careful to monitor the amount of tragic or negative news you consume at any time. Don’t be afraid to
turn off the news, if need be, to protect your ears from hearing so much tragedy and loss. Know your limit. Also, be careful about googling information that would lead you down rabbit holes of negative information.
2. Develop a vocabulary of emotion words and exercise your emotional intelligence to know what you are feeling, when and be able to share that with someone. Surround yourself with emotionally intelligent people, who can pick up how you might be feeling in any moment and challenge you to acknowledge and talk about it.
3. Stick to the facts. Don’t allow your imagination to run wild based on what’s happening in the world. And remember, just because it happened to someone else, doesn’t mean it will happen to you, too.
4. Monitor your spending and have some back up plans. Educate yourself on ways to invest and to protect yourself from food insecurity and other struggles by putting away funds for emergencies, and by using only if necessary.
5. Talk with your children about what they would do in case of emergency. And help them to develop a plan of
action that is safest and most effective given the scenarios you discuss. Make sure they are able to share the plan with you in their own words.
6. Keep prayer in the forefront of your life and your family members’ lives as much as possible. Anoint yourself and them when leaving the home and in the home at the start of your day and trust God for His protection.
7. Be wise. Demonstrate wise decision-making in front of children. Always let your loved ones know that you love them before they leave your presence and protection.
8. Make sure you’re getting the proper amount of rest each day and acknowledge when you are reaching your limits as the need to rest arrives. And then do it! REST! Establish a schedule of rest so your body and mind will become accustomed to it on a consistent basis. Sleep deprivation will complicate and increase mental/ emotional health distress.
9. Watch your caffeine levels. Caffeine will get in the way of good rest and make you feel anxious and jittery. Don’t drink caffeine right before bedtime nor throughout the day. Drink it in moderation (1-2 cups of coffee/ morning or one 20oz. soda/day)
10. Take time to have fun when you can. Recreation and laughter can help one to cope during emotionally stressful times. THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK

any of us have prayed and spoken over our financial situation and have not seen much change because we have not truly learned how to manage our finances. While dancing and praying may show God we are sincere, it does not show Him that we have learned how to manage our finances. Faith without works is dead. No matter how much favor reigns over our lives, we cannot mismanage and expect more. Why? Because favor will never outwork focus. We must do the work. God is not a genie. The Bible includes scriptures that speak about the importance of putting in the work to obtain more. We overspend and expect to get rich. (James 4:3) We are in debt and expect to be free. (Proverbs 22:7) We want better jobs but hate to read and learn. (Proverbs 10:4) Managing our finances does not have to be complicated. We just need a plan. I always recommend clients to start with a written budget BEFORE payday. This allows you to plan for what is coming in and manage what is going out. One budgeting technique I encourage for simplicity is the 50-30-20 rule. Aim to spend no more than 50% for “musthave” expenses like tithing, rent/ mortgage, groceries (not eating out), or car insurance. These are the expenses that you cannot live without. Next, allocate 30% for discretionary spending like entertainment, traveling, eating out, or shopping. The remaining 20% should THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
MONEY
MONEY MATTERS The late Dr. Myles Munroe said, “God doesn’t give money to worshippers, He gives money to managers.” go toward savings/retirement investments and/or debt payments. If you’re fortunate enough to need less than 50% of income for must-have expenses, you can increase your saving or “fun” spending. Although saving is mentioned last, it should be your top priority. It is essential for you to have money in savings and for retirement. Respect your plan and your plan will work for you. For example, if you make $3,000 per month, using this budgeting strategy, your allocations would be as follows: • • •
$1,500 for Needs (50%) $900 for Wants (30%) $600 for Savings and Retirement (20%)
This set up will help you get into a healthy habit of managing your money God’s way. When you have a plan for your money, you are able to build wealth and reach financial freedom because it allows you to be able to understand if you truly can afford the life you choose. For those who may not have consistent income each month, it may be good to look at what you have earned within the past six months and look at your lowest paycheck. Once you have seen your lowest paycheck, plan as if that is the expected amount you will receive each month and then anything above that should go to the wants part of your budget. If you find that your lowest paycheck would not cover your “Needs”, then you may need to increase your overall income. Also, if you are spending too much on wants, it may be time to decrease what you are spending. Once you have managed what you have, He will bless you with more. I am a witness.
