When I was a little girl a very dear friend told me that nothing is ever too large to tackle. “You can even eat an elephant if you wanted to,” she told me wisely one afternoon while we were both up to our elbows in mud planting flowers in her garden. “You just have to take one bite at a time.” Being an avid animal lover I was at first completely taken aback by this rather odd metaphor, but slowly grew to understand its meaning -- no matter how large something may seem there is always a way to accomplish it. This quirky saying is something that has frequently entered my mind while putting together PAWSH’s first issue. From its earliest conception until today, when I can finally present our new online format, I managed to calm my nerves and embrace my enthusiasm by remembering that elephant and taking each day one step at a time. Bite by bite if you will. My life has always been consumed with three great loves: the written word, the many facets of design and dogs. At last I have found the absolute perfect way for me to embrace all of my passions at once and more importantly share them with others! I hope PAWSH can be a place for talented pet photographers to showcase their work, for budding writers to weave their poetic words and for animal lovers all over the world to gather and celebrate a life lived well with pets. Enormous thanks to my incredible team of writers, designers, web developers and photographers for all of your hard work and dedication. Without you none of this would have been possible. Without further adieu I welcome you PAWSH’s first edition, entitled “For the Love of Dog.”

Your doggy’s food should be at least 20-25% protein. Beef, lamb or chicken are best Avoid any foods that list corn as one of the first ingredients. Food allergies can cause coats to become less than shiny and corn is a very common dog allergy.
Pawsh Point
Remember to always check with your vet before altering your pet’s diet in any way.
If your dog suffers from scaly skin, then add some extra vitamin A to their diets. Some crunchy carrots should do the trick.
This mineral will help with any crusting on the skin that can occur. It’s found in chicken which makes it easier for both you and puppy.
As an anti-inflammatory, these help with allergies or skin diseases. Flaxseed and fish oils are the best place to find omega-3s and can easily be added to puppy’s food.
These fatty acids add shine to your dog’s coat by helping replace oils in their skin. Sunflower or safflower oils are a great place to find these. Small dogs only need one teaspoon stirred into their food while larger dogs would need a full tablespoon. CULTURE FOR PETS

SIX TIPS FOR DOGS IN WEDDINGS
A WAGGY PRESENCE MAY MAKE AN ADORABLE ADDITION TO A WEDDING PARTY, BUT JUST AS EVERY OTHER ASPECT OF THE BIG DAY NEEDS TO BE METICULOUSLY PLANNED FOR, A DOG ALSO REQUIRES SOME PREPARATION BEFORE YOU WALK DOWN THE AISLE.

Dogs in the House
Grooming
Some churches and reception halls have strict animal policies, so it is important to find out ahead of time if furry friends are welcome. This will avoid the awkward situation of leaving your significant other at the alter while you frantically try to find a way to sneak your pooch inside. But don’t worry, there are plenty of dog-friendly venues to choose from if you do some research.
The groom won’t be the only one in need of some attentive grooming before saying, “I do.” Do your guests a favour and give your pup a good bath the night before to keep them smelling rosy. Plus, a freshly laundered pup will benefit people with allergies who may be attending the ceremony. Of course, nobody should look more beautiful than the blushing bride, but the cute award is totally up for grabs, so dress your pup up with a fancy collar, luxurious ribbon or mini ‘tux.’
The Buddy System
Role
Chances are you probably won’t be able to keep an eye on your beloved dog while surrounded by boisterous celebrations. So appoint a niece, nephew or another guest as official dog-watcher for the event to make sure Rover keeps his paws off the tables and stays out of mischief. After all, you can’t have him bouncing all over the guests!
It’s important to choose a suitable role for you pooch based upon their behaviour and temperament. Sure, your sister or best friend may not appreciate your decision to make canine chum the maid-of-honour or best man, but if your pup is calm and obedient there’s no reason why they can’t assume the role. Typically, however, the most common part for a pooch to play in a wedding is that of the ring-bearer.
Leashes
Entertainment
Wedding days are filled with butterflies of excitement and that energy can easily translate to your dog. New places, new people and loud music can turn even the most serene pooch into a hyper goofball, so bringing along a leash is never a bad idea – just in case.
In addition to remembering something borrowed and something blue, it is also important to bring along everything your pooch needs to be comfortable while away from home, such as food, water, a couple of toys and some treats to reward good behaviour.
“I DO” D-RINGS Made from beautiful Czech lead-free crystals, these darling little rings add a touch of sparkle to any pup’s collar!

BIRTHDAYS COME BUT ONCE A YEAR, SO WHY NOT MAKE YOUR PUP’S NEXT CELEBRATION THE BASH OF A LIFETIME? FOR A TRULY DROOLWORTHY PUPPY PARTY THAT IS FUN AND PLAYFUL ALL YOU NEED IS A LITTLE
pizz-azz!
F
irst things first, a table to hold all the delectable goodies is an absolute must! Set up a surface that is at “dog height.” We achieved this with a wooden board atop several planters so Jack (the birthday boy) could easily reach his treats. No paws off rules here! Next, spruce up that bare board by covering with some festive birthday fabric! We were lucky to have just the right fabric in a puppy motif but you can find lots of great patterns and colors at your local fabric or craft store! Not only does the right fabric add a splash of colour to your table décor, but often times it sets the tone of an entire party palate!

For example, from your tablecloth you can pull together a brilliant colour scheme! We chose the browns and reds from our fabric for a barking good time! What compliments a barking good time? Why a creative backdrop of course! Backdrops are a breeze to make with tissue paper fans. They’re easy to store and can be used for all sorts of occasions! You can buy tissue paper fans in every colour imaginable online or, if you’re feeling extra crafty, you can make your own tissue paper pom poms. Can you spy our red ones hanging in the background? To top everything off we mixed in a simple brown basket filled with milk-bones, which turned out to be the ideal addition to our festive celebration! Want to know a major party secret? Ribbons! Be sure to always add ribbon bows in your party colours to everything for extra ‘oomph!’ Ribbon accents always take your party from good to fabulous! Food is of the utmost importance at parties, particularly those of the canine variety. Serve bones and puppy treats in fun containers like these inexpensive plastic red bowls! Fill with a bit of party crinkle paper and top with dog bones! Hmmm.... what else? What else? Oh, but of course! Every birthday puppy needs their very own canine-friendly CUPCAKE. So we made “pupcakes” topped with a bone naturally. Last but not least, every birthday dog needs a birthday hat! Jack loved his bright orange hat with chocolate brown bow! Buy simple party hats and adorn with bows or other craft accents to match your table. Did you know that a hat can wear many hats? When not a top your pup’s head, a party hat can also serve as table decorations on display! Voila! A simple recipe for an extravagant birthday party! Just make sure your guests don’t howl too much when it’s time to go home.

7. To prepare frosting, blend bananas or cooked potatoes and 2 to 3 tablespoons apple sauce until smooth.

WHITE WALLS, SLANTED RED ROOF, LITTLE ARCHWAY CUT OUT IN THE FRONT – THE IMAGE OF THE QUINTESSENTIAL DOGHOUSE. LIKE MOST THINGS, THE STANDARD OUTDOOR HOME FOR DOGS HAS A BASIC, GETS-THE-JOB-DONE VARIETY, AND A MUCH MORE LUXURIOUS, EXPENSIVE VERSION. BUT WHAT KIND OF DOGHOUSE IS WORTH DROPPING SEVERAL GRAND FOR? A , OF COURSE; LIKE THE ONES MADE BY THE GERMAN COMPANY BEST FRIEND’S HOME. THESE STYLISH HOUSES ARE AS MUCH AN ARTISTIC STATEMENT AS THEY ARE SHELTER FOR YOUR POOCH.
designer doghouse
B
est Friend’s Home started when Doria Keppler and André Heinermann had a vision for amazing, interesting doghouses – but there was no such thing out there to buy. “Humans,” they said, “With a sense for design and aesthetics, normally transfer this to everything that surrounds them.” Channelling the entrepreneurial spirit, they worked with an architect to design and build their dream. These first four designs are what they came up with, along with a promise of many more in the future. The first of the doggie mansion styles is the Alabama, a detailed throwback to old southern U.S. plantation manors. With heavy, imposing columns and lattice windows, the Alabama projects a sense of wealth and dignity. Built from varnished wood and break-proof glass windows, it can withstand even the most dire down-south weather. The Alabama comes in three different sizes, with 80cm of shoulder height being the maximum vertical clearance.

The Cubix design pays homage to Bauhaus architectural school in Germany; sporting clean lines that are solid colours. It’s an art nouveau style to be sure, with a square design and lots of windows. If your dog likes tonnes of light, this may just be the perfect house. And with a maximum pooch shoulder height of 80cm, this house is home to a fair vertical range of dogs. Have a small dog and a young daughter? The Fairytale Castle might be inevitable. This spired palace of pink is taken straight out of the sweet stories of gallant knights and distressed damsels. While the castle itself is pretty large, only the smallest and daintiest dogs can slip though its doors; tallest entry is no more than 40cm. The last of the styles is the Lönneberga, a quaint little taste of Sweden to brighten any backyard. Built in the classical template of simple Swedish traditional architecture, the Lönneberga brings a lovely feeling of security to your lawn. It even has a little second story window for your pooch to peak out of. With the standard 80cm shoulder height, the Lönneberga is a great house for your dog – and a lot of fun to say. Lönneberga. Have something else in mind? Custom doghouses are available as well, handcrafted for your individual doggie. Maybe something more Frank Gehry? Heck, maybe even something a little Gary Busey. The sky’s the limit when it comes to custom designer doghouses. The old staple of a doghouse has held up in our collective minds for many years – and truth be told, it’s probably not about to be dethroned any time soon. But if you’ve got the cash, and if you’ve got the drive, it’s very possible to overthrow this accepted norm with flair and style. Not to mention a healthy dose of fine German craftsmanship!

Originally part of Puppy Prodigies, a non-profit organization that trains puppies to be service dogs for people with disabilities, Ricochet soon discovered her extraordinary talent to catch a wave. According to Ricochet’s owner, certified professional dog trainer, Judy Fridono, “Balance and coordination exercises are part of [a puppy’s] upbringing from the time they can walk. So, when Ricochet was invited to jump on a boogie board in a kiddie pool, she jumped on, and has been surfing ever since.” Ricochet is still a part of the Puppy Prodigies organization, but her four talented paws have lead her down a slightly different path. Despite all her service dog training, Ricochet harboured a love for chasing birds and other distractions that would be dangerous for a canine meant to fulfil service duties. “So at 15 months of age, the decision was made to release her from the role of service dog candidate,” Fridono explains. “But we still wanted her to do something meaningful with her life.” Thus a surf board made its way into Ricochet’s life, who became the very first dog to make the transition from service to SURFice dog, a term coined just for her.

This first fund-raising surf adventure was quite successful. For Patrick, she raised over $10,000 for physical therapy and a service dog. “In addition, her sponsor, the Rose Foundation awarded a grant to cover an additional three years of therapy. The three times a week sessions that Patrick is involved in costs the family about $30,000 a year,” Fridono adds. Even though she has only been fund-raising for just over a year now, Ricochet has raised almost $55,000 (a number that continues to climb) through her stellar surfing. BEHAVIOUR
IS YOUR TEENAGE DOG
Written by DIANNE SARASIN Photography by TYLER POLLARD
SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE AGES OF FIVE AND SIX MONTHS YOUR PUPPY’S BEHAVIOUR WILL INEVITABLY CHANGE — AND NOT NECESSARILY FOR THE BETTER. THAT’S RIGHT, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE TIME OF THE TEENAGER. imilar to human tweens and teens, this time of life is when most dogs begin to test boundaries and household rules...not to mention your patience. House manners may deteriorate, attention spans may shorten and social skills may endure a behavioural ‘funk.’ However, before all of you pup-parents throw back your heads and howl, keep in mind that understanding your dog’s behaviour can greatly help navigate a rambunctious adolescence.
S
Typically, the teen stage is when most people realize that poor puppy habits are not longer cute. This is the age you’ll find yourself having to pull his teeth off your clothes. You’ll discover him in the
30

closet chewing on your best shoes, digging in the yard, jumping up on everyone and taking over the furniture. Why, you may ask? Because in your dog’s mind he thinks that he is the strongest of the pack. He has learned that he can run faster than you, be more agile than you and probably considers himself much smarter than you. At this point, many owners feel overwhelmed by their fur-child’s newly discovered self-confidence. But don’t despair! The reality is that your dog simply has to learn who is in charge, meaning that you have to reassert yourself as pack leader – a title that comes with respect.

BEHAVIOUR
If you have a bouncy dog that does moon loops as soon as you say “Walk” or pick up his leash, or if he just explodes actively with uncontrollable enthusiasm o every time he meets a person, another dog, a squirrel, or a leaf, a good strategy to employ is exercise Running off all that excess energy is a terrific way to calm a dog, which creates a mindset that is more receptive to training and obedience. Think of it as blowing off steam to relieve pressure.
Another good idea is to practice settling your dog down in easy scenarios like when he’s less excited or even when your dog is perfectly calm and relaxed. For example, when the dog is snoozing on his bed, ask him to join you to settle down on the couch or beside you on the floor. Then you move on to settling him during more distracting settings, using the same command and energy that you employ when your pup is calm. Even when you’re out walking ask him to settle down every 25 yards or so. By the end of the walk, you’ll have a different dog – one that is far more attentive and compliant due to the repetitive command you are issuing and seeing through. Of course, these things take time and eventually you want to be able to teach Mr. Hyper how to settle down quickly anytime and anywhere. How do you get any lesson to stick? By making ‘learning’ a game. I teach a game called, ‘The Crazy-Settle Down’ to all my dogs and they love it! 32
| NO° 1 | FOR THE LOVE O F
DOG
What is “The Crazy-Settle Down’ game? Well, let me tell you by beginning with its philosophy. Obviously, we have to allow dogs to bark and bounce in order to practice teaching him how to settle down and be quiet. So rather than letting the dog be rambunctious at will, teach him to be rambunctious on cue. Once you have taught your dog to do the behaviour on cue, the behaviour is no longer a problem that works against training. Instead the activity can now be used as reward to reinforce training. How cool is that? Not only is a great training technique, but your teenage dog has fun and gets exercise at the same time! It’s a threefold success!
The discussion of teenage dogs can go on forever. Indeed that entire phase of life can feel like forever to a dog parent who is unprepared and uniformed. Each teencanine will undoubtedly be different and certain cases require extra special attention, so if in doubt it never hurts to enroll your pup in a few additional obedience and training classes. Whatever course of action you choose, whether it is “The Crazy-Settle Down” technique or if you seek a professional trainer, be reassured that the teenage period of your dog’s life does not have to a turbulent one.

ith over 25 years of experience, Master Dog Trainer and author of numerous books including, My Smart Puppy, Sarah Wilson explains the difference between nipping and biting: “Playful puppy mouthing and nipping generally is related to the puppy being excited. They’re playful and they’ll quickly give you a grab.” Biting is something very different. “It is specific, there is a trigger. You’re grooming him and he turns and bites. You go to take something away and he bites.” If your puppy is biting, then you have a more serious problem and should get help from a professional trainer. But don’t be worried if you’ve found yourself with a nippy puppy. “A mouthy puppy is not necessarily a dominant puppy or a bad puppy, he’s a pretty normal puppy and it’s a pretty normal puppy stage. Between four months and six months, dogs are going through heavy teething and may be more mouthy during that time,” Wilson adds. Mouthing is important because they use their mouths much like we use our hands. “It’s how they interact with the world. So

will be all over you. “Act the way you want your dog to act. So if you want the dog to be calm, be calm,” Wilson urges. “Because you have something fast moving right by their face and by their eyes and they’re going to mouth that. Dogs chase after things that move and if your hand is moving, guess what?” Once that mouth is on you, make sure you are sending a clear signal to your puppy. Stop, and withdraw from playing so that the puppy learns that mouthing will make their favourite toy (you) go away. “How’s the puppy supposed to learn what you don’t want unless you create a really clear contrast for them? I’m playful now, that mouth goes on me, I’m gone. And the puppy learns pretty quickly,” Wilson describes. But the very best way to get your puppy to learn to stop mouthing is spending time around other puppies. “In a perfect world, I would love to have mouthy puppies around sensible, well socialized adult dogs who will educate them appropriately. They learn how to behave, they learn how to keep the game going by how they behave. And dogs educate dogs better than any human can, no matter how experienced or talented we are, you’ll never do as good a job as another dog,” Wilson clarifies. And don’t worry if you don’t know any puppy play pals. “You can talk to your veterinarian. Often they know somebody who’s in the same situation you are who very much would like their puppy to play.” Never fear. There are always places to go to get help with your mouthy puppy. From your vet to a puppy class and resources like mysmartpuppy.com. “People get 24/7 care [at the website]. If they have a question, they can post it there and we have a team of professionals and we’re there to support pet owners, being successful. That’s why we’re there,” Wilson explains. Just follow Wilson’s advice and soon you’ll be able to nip the nipping in the bud.

POODLES ARE LIKE THE UNFORTUNATE YOUNGER BROTHER WHO IS A PLATONIC FRIEND OF HIS OLDER SISTER’S FRIENDS. THE GIRLS DRESS HIM UP AND PARADE HIM AROUND; THERE’S NO MALICIOUS INTENT, BUT THE DAMAGE TO THE POOR BOY’S REPUTATION HAS BEEN DONE.
P
oodles are hailed as a fru-fru pet; a breed that’s best suited for dog shows and celebrity purses. When you think poodle, you see a wee little puffball – probably pink – that’s been groomed beyond recognition. Poodles are great dogs, and that’s an unfair (if common) assumption– it’s like saying that the younger brother can’t play sports just because the teenage girls made him wear lipstick and eyeliner that one time in eighth grade. Let’s start with some history. Poodle comes from the German word for puddle; appropriate, as the first poodles were bred as water retrievers. It’s thought that the first poodles were of “standard” size – an official classification that means.... well, it means the standard size for a dog. The “miniature” and “toy” sizes came next, bred for varying purposes. This means that the modern poodle can range from standing three feet to a whopping ten inches tall. All poodles have very think, curly hair. Note: it’s hair, not fur. Fur grows to a certain length, and then sheds. Poodle hair just keeps getting longer, much like a human’s. This means two things: first, a poodle should be trimmed every once in a while, and second, they’re considered to be a hypoallergenic breed – that means that they don’t bother people with dog allergies. For the most part, poodles are very social and friendly dogs. This is one of the reasons they put up with being dolled up and shown off. Poodles just really love the attention. They’re a highly energetic dog needing a fair amount of room to run around, and they’re great with kids.

Poodles are also one of the most intelligent of the dog species, and are considered very easy to train – assuming they don’t get stubborn on you. Ease of teaching, mixed with their friendliness and will to please, is what originally got them into show business. First displayed in circuses, poodles were popular for their impressive repertoire of tricks. The limelight has persisted in the poodle’s blood ever since. Popular at dog shows, poodles have several “clips,” or hair styles. There is some debate over the origin of these clips – some say that they evolved from very utilitarian needs, such as insulating major joints when the poodle was swimming while shaving the rest of the hair to reduce drag; while others say that the clips are simply offshoots of popular 18th century circus styles. None the less, many dog shows only allow very specific clips when presenting a poodle. The Continental Clip is the one most people envision when someone mentions a poodle – it’s the one where most of the dog is shaved, leaving only pom-poms around its ankles, tail, and ears.

Poodles, like most pure-bred dogs, have some health issues to be aware of. Addison’s disease is one of the most reported ailments, potentially fatal unless treated – but with treatment, completely survivable and with little impact on a poodle’s lifespan. Another noteworthy ailment is Gastric Dilatation Volvulus, a condition where excess gas becomes trapped in the dog’s stomach causing bloating and twisting. This is a dangerous condition, and should be treated as quickly as possible. Now that the deadly problems are out of the way, it’s a fact that most poodles will live from eleven to fourteen years, on average, and could well go into their late teens if properly taken care of. Poodles have been burdened with a bad rap over the years. This hearty and friendly dog has become a ‘diva’ pet in the minds of the public, misconstrued as the pink dog with pom-poms. Remember: don’t judge the younger brother – and don’t dismiss the poodle – for their penchance to fabulousness.

Hi Mrs. V T D O, It does sound like you and your husband are defintely in need of some help. Your health and well being are being threatened with lack of sleep My first question would be,was Gemma taught to be in a crate when she was younger and smaller? If so, you’re halfway there to a solution. If not, then all is not lost. If the crate was used initially, then the reappearance is all that is needed to explain that she has her own bed and sleeping area and she doesn’t have to share your bed. Keeping the crate in your room with you and your husband will address her exclusion protests. No dog wants to be excluded from their people/pack. If the crate wasn’t used, then she can still be taught that there’s a place for her in your room possibly beside your bed. Either a bed or soft mat area for her to sleep on. You must remain firm and unwavering in your insistance that she remain in her own bed. Persistance/patience is the way the animal kingdom functions. You
must be more persistant than she is — she will respect and comply to that philosophy. I might suggest that you practice this process a few times during the day for a few days/weeks so that you’re not trying to train when you should be getting your sleep. Your resistance will be weakend if you’re tired and you just don’t want to have a battle of the wills. And that’s what this will be. It may take a bit of time to weaken the habit that has been ingrained for two years. It took two years to develop, it won’t be resolved in a few days. All dogs of all makes and sizes are only asking one thing, every day, “Who’s in charge?” If she decides where she’s sleeping and it’s not your decision, then she’s the one in charge. But fortunately, once the battle is fought and won by you, the discussion will not be an issue any more. Restful sleep will be had by all. I hope this helps you and may your future be filled roomy, restful sleep.

YOU DIDN’T REALLY LIKE THAT COUCH ANYWAY AND THE BASEBOARDS NEEDED TO BE REDONE TOO, RIGHT? A CAT’S RAZOR-LIKE CLAWS CAN DO LOT OF DAMAGE.
The first thing you need to realize is that you are never going to get a cat to stop scratching. It helps keep their nails healthy (which you might not appreciate but they sure do!) and it also marks their territory. Aside from those gashes letting everybody know it’s their house, cats have scent glands in their paws letting them leave their signature scent behind as well. Scratching is a part of a healthy lifestyle. It stretches their muscles and helps release any pent up emotion. Whether they’re excited or angry, it’s easier to let them take out their energy on inanimate objects instead of, say, you.
What you want to do though is to show them where it’s appropriate to scratch. To start, you need to deter them from whatever piece of furniture they have decided is ‘theirs.’ You can do this by covering it with materials that cats find unpleasant, like aluminum foil or double sided tape. But you also need to deal with the scent issue. Cats hate the smell of citrus so some orange peels might do the trick!

In order to keep them from scratching your favourite wing-back chair, you need to provide a place where they can scratch: a scratching post of their very own. Now that they come in all shapes and sizes, it’s just a matter of finding the one that will work best for your cat. Most cats are vertical scratchers, but if you have a carpet scratcher, you can find horizontal aperatuses too.
So you crawl down and show her how it’s done. Then you use her front paws so that she really gets it. Despite your loving intention, she thinks you’re an idiot. She can figure out what to do with it on her own and will only resent you for doubting her intelligence. Instead, put the scratching post near where she usually scratches (don’t worry, you can slowly move it to a more suitable location). Place some cat nip on the scratching post and play games with her around it and she’ll soon be scratching away. Once you and Kitty have established appropriate scratching areas, she can scratch quite happily and you can enjoy a house without unsightly claw marks.

D
octor Dorothy Cheung has been with the Central Cat Hospital in London, ON for nine years now and has seen a lot of obese cats. Much like humans, the best place to start when dealing with obesity is diet and for Cheung, the most important issue is canned food. “Dry food has a lot of carbohydrates because that’s how they make it into pellets. And cats are carnivores so they were not meant to metabolize carbohydrates so their bodies aren’t used to this and they gain weight,” explains Cheung.

CAT CORNER
Despite the ease and availability of dry kibble, canned foods have more protein so it’s important to look at what is actually in your cat’s food. “If you are going to give them dry, I see it as a snack or dessert. It shouldn’t be their main meal,” Cheung advises. If you’re going to put them on dry, just a little bit, just for their teeth. So I recommend a dental diet and I just give an 1/8 of a cup or a ¼ of a cup.”
The flipside to diet is, of course, exercise. “When they’re indoors they aren’t out there hunting. So with a wild cat, what they do is they catch about 10 mice a day and they expend energy doing that,” Cheung states. Your chubby indoor cat just has to waddle over to their fancy food dish instead of actually working for their food. But you can change that. “Put food up higher on a perch. We have balls where they have to play with the ball and there are holes where the food would fall out. You can throw kibble for them to catch,” Cheung suggests. Not only does it help them burn some calories, it makes feeding time a whole lot more fun for both of you.
Now for all of you out there who just leave food out for your kitty cat to graze whenever they want, it’s not such a good idea. Having continual access to food, especially when it’s usually dry food, is not good. “Simulate what Dry food has a lot of they do in the wild. seizure is caused by abnormal neurological activity in the brain. They can be either generalized or focal. A generalized seizure or tonic-clonic, commonly known as grand mal, affects the entire body. The body is stiff, sometimes spastic. Along with convulsions, some dogs lose control of their bladder and bowels. Some, like Lucky, vocalize. Meanwhile, focal seizures are generally mild. The abnormal activity is restricted to a part of the brain and thus only a part of the body is affected. These seizures may be characterized as facial spasms, limb twitching, a fainting spell or disorientation. There are three phases to a seizure The pre-ictal phase is a period of unusual behaviour such as signs of anxiety and apprehension. Some dogs exhibit these signs intermittently while others show no signs at all. This phase can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. The seizure itself is the ictal phase. This phase typically last a few minutes but can last up to thirty minutes (anything over five minutes is considered “status epilepticus,” not to be confused with “cluster seizures”

When a dog, or any animal, stops breathing there is a build up of carbon dioxide and other chemicals in the brain which depresses nerve function and the seizure is turned “off.” After a seizure, be sure to record what happened. Make a note of the date and time, relevant environmental factors, the length of the seizure and post-ictal phase, and the severity of the seizure. But not every one can afford twenty-four hour supervision for their dogs and this is okay too. Just be sure to “seizure proof” a room or your house for your dog. There should be nothing to bump into, and nothing that can fall on your dog (such as a book from the bookshelf or cutlery from the kitchen counter). Additionally, setting up a baby gate at the top of any and all stairs is a good idea. Just remember that most cases epilepsy and many of the diseases that cause seizures, are manageable!
After the episode seek veterinary care immediately. CULTURE FOR PETS

W
ith a little detergent, even oil and water can mingle together. Likewise, with a little preparation and training a pet can intermingle with a newborn baby happily and safely. Remember that animals – like most people – are creatures of habit. They don’t like it when all of a sudden their world gets flipped on its head. Imagine if you spontaneously got drafted into the deep-sea mining corps – might make you a bit uncomfortable. Having a new baby as the new center of attention under their roof can make even the calmest of pets nervous. It may sound silly, but one of the best ways to get your pet ready for the eventuality of your progeny’s birth is to cart around a baby-sized doll. Take the doll on strolls, change the doll’s diapers, and generally treat it as your own, non-plastic kid. This adapts your pet to the new routine, and a fully dressed and diapered doll provides an interesting conversation piece for visitors. This pre-actual-infant period is also a great time to iron out any kinks in your pet’s training. If your dog is a jumper or your cat likes to scratch, it’s probably best to make sure these kinds of behaviours stop. Yes, training whilst pregnant may be exhausting, but in the name of safety, it’s necessary. You might even want to go to a professional trainer, if needed. Also, as a side note, it’s probably for the best if the expectant mother-to-be avoids directly handling any kitty litter just in case of lingering parasites; but hey, that’s what partners are for!
Right! So, let’s say your beautiful baby has arrived. The next step is coming home for an animal introduction. If your pet shows any signs of nerves or uneasiness around your new swaddled bundle of joy, you should probably limit the amount of time your pet spends with the baby in the beginning. First of all, let the spouse without the child spend some time with the pets. Some good ol’ fashioned attention is good for your fuzzy friend after you’ve stayed a spell in the hospital. Plus, it reassures them that they are still a valued member of the pack. From there, it’s best to take something of the new baby’s – a blanket, hat, whatever – and put it near where your pet sleeps in order to get them used to that new baby smell. After a few days of scent-only contact, it might well be time to introduce fur to your baby – but slowly. The first time your pet and your baby are in the same room, one parent should hold the baby while the other one handles the pet. This isn’t because your pets are untrustworthy! More often than not, a beloved dog or cat is just very curious – and easily startled or excited by any sudden movement (or sound) this new addition to your home may make. Repeat these encounters, incresing the amount of time baby and fur-baby spend together, making sure to reward your pet with plenty of praise and treats for good behaviour. They will be soon become BFFs!
JUST LIKE A GEEK BEFRIENDING A HIPSTER, IT MAY TAKE SOME TIME, BUT WITH THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF PATIENCE AND A LITTLE TIME, YOUR BABE AND PET WILL SOON BE THE BEST OF FRIENDS! CULTURE FOR PETS

SAVING
FOR EVERY BREED, THERE IS A RESCUE. DACHSHUNDS LUCKILY HAVE A GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE LOOKING OUT FOR THEM AT THE CANADIAN DACHSHUND RESCUE (CDR).
THE CANADIAN
A
DACHSHUND RESCUE Written by ALLISON VORSTENBOSCH Photography by CINDY ORTI
ngela Macmillan is the foster home coordinator and sits on the board of directors for the Ontario based CDR. CDR was in founded in 2001 by members of American Dachshund rescues because there was quite a need for a rescue to start in Canada. Unfortunately, lots of these hot dogs are in need of a home. “We’ll be contacted by humane societies that are over run,” says Macmillan. “They have a dog in their care that they don’t think they can adopt out.” Other times families are forced to give up the family pet either because of a change in situations or they didn’t know what they were getting into. “We try to stress that people really need to educate themselves because certainly one breed is not the breed that’s going to fit every family,” says Macmillan. With dachshunds in particular, it’s very important to do your homework. “They can be very bad barkers and they’re very difficult to housetrain,” Macmillan states. And you might want to think twice about a dachshund if you have children under 10 as dachshunds have a bad reputation of disliking little kids. But there are lots of positives with these little hot dogs, such as their loyalty and personality. “They’re a very funny breed. They bring a lot of comedy into the home,” Macmillan continues.

CRITTER CAREERS
The vet bills for dachshunds can also be more than people expect. “Dachshunds, medically, because they have a very long spine and short legs, they do tend to have back issues. Some people aren’t aware or aren’t prepared if their dog all of a sudden has back issues,” Macmillan explains. When the bills become too much, some families unfortunately will surrender the dog to the CDR. What makes the rescue so successful, placing over 700 dogs in different homes, is that everybody there knows the breed. “The people that started our rescue group own dachshunds so they certainly know the breed very well,” Macmillan explains. “We know what kind of home is best for them.”
74
| NO° 1 | FOR THE LOVE O F
DOG
The rescue does their research to make sure that every applicant is well suited for a dachshund, requiring an application, references and a visit to their home. “We go to the home, and we ensure that everyone in the home is in agreement of adopting a dog. We go through the home and explain the trials and tribulations of dachshunds in that home. For example, if they have a lot of stairs. Stairs are not an ideal situation for the breed,” describes Macmillan. “We meet the other animals in the home so we know what type of dachshund is best suited for that environment.” Once an applicant is approved, there is a waiting list before you can have your very own wiener dog. The wait can be anywhere from
two weeks to three months but once they find the appropriate dog, you’ll get that phone call. “We disclose everything we know about the dog. Our goal is to ensure the adoptions do not fail.” Macmillan elaborates. “When we place a dog in a forever home, we want to do the best possible job we can ensuring that that dog is going into the best home because we can have fabulous applications and fabulous waiting homes for dogs but not every dog is going to be suitable for them.” The rescue always makes sure that the dogs get the proper medical attention and are spayed or neutered before being adopted. This can be hard sometimes as a non-profit organization but they’re always looking for donations and even accept Canadian Tire money to help cover the
cost of supplies. The dogs appreciate all the attention too. “We’ve had dogs that are just clearly obese and we work with them in foster care prior to adopting them out and we adopt them out to a home dedicated to keep them on a strict diet and strict exercise routine and the dog has shed pounds and pounds and pounds,” Macmillan explains. “We’ve had dogs in our care that have ended up becoming therapy dogs. “ So if you want a little dachshund of your very own or even if you just want to help out, the Canadian Dachshund Rescue is a great place to check out. And maybe one day, thanks to their efforts, every dog will have a forever home.

s this company’s name suggests, these dogs beds deliver the royal treatment. Inspired by the rich alluring aesthetic made famous in the 17th Century by Louis XIV, these ornately hand-crafted pieces of pet furniture are an amazing way to pamper the little paws that follow you everywhere. Frederic Richard founded Une Vie de Chateau in 2010 after following the love of his life from France all the way to California. “The tale of these little pet beds is a love story,” says Richard candidly. “I met the woman of my dreams here in California and turned my life upside down to be with her, because there is no reason to live away from the person you love.” Harbouring a deep admiration for his family’s fine French antiques since boyhood, Richard always knew he wanted to pursue something that harmonized historic style with modern day life. So once settled in bright and sunny California, Richard rediscovered his youthful enjoyment of carpentry and Renaissance design. His eye for refined style was soon married with his wife’s interior design business and resulted in the creation of French influenced furniture – for pets!
“My wife would tell me that it was often a problem to find a place for a dog bed or a cat bed in a client’s décor, because they simply were not cute,” explains Richard laughingly, who quickly decided to reinvent the pet pad and try something different. “I wanted to design something that was not common, a piece that made a statement but remained functional for the animals.” The one-of-a-kind works of Une Vie de Chateau accomplished such a vision, transforming pet furniture into exquisite examples of art. Precision balanced perfectly with passion resides in the intricate detailing and high quality of each bed, stool, sofa and lounger. Over a period of a couple of months each piece is hand-crafted using only the finest materials; solid wood and luxurious upholstery complete with cushions that are stuffed with real feathers! But wait, there’s more. Any piece of furniture can be further customized with decorative crystals, precious stones and even miniature framed oil paintings! Oh, and to ensure the sturdiness and comfort of each completed product, every design is tested and approved by Georges, Gravy, Felix and Mimi – Richard’s own dogs and cats.
“I do not mind spending extra time to make sure everything is just right,” Richard continues jovially. “I love to work and make a point to make everything a beautiful finished product.” Versatility is also an important value in Une Vie de Chateau’s philosophy. In 2011, a new collection will be launched focusing on the influences of the countryside, defined by a casual yet contemporary tone. Richard says that it is his goal to make his high-end products more affordable, by researching new alternative materials that will preserve his high standards of excellence while lowering the overall price point. “Everybody should be able to give their pets the best,” he explains. “Our dogs and cats give so much, it is only right that we give back to them.” Ah yes, it is a dog’s life to be sure! Oh well, we mere mortals will simply have to live vicariously through our pets when day-dreaming of the perfect afternoon nap.

ALAS, AS UTTERLY FABULOUS AS CANINES ARE, IT IS A BIT OF A HASSLE TO MANAGE THEIR WASTE. MANY METHODS – FROM SIMPLE AND EASY TO CREATIVE AND EXPENSIVE – HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED TO . LET’S EXPLORE SOME IN UNNECESSARY DETAIL!
deal with doggie doo
While it may look awkward – and it is – the pooper-scooper is the way to go if you absolutely have to maintain the maximum distance you can from the scoopable object in question. The term ‘pooper-scooper’ actually relates to many different kinds of long-handled scooping mechanisms. The most mechanically rudimentary of these is a wedge-with-a-bag-on-astick, while other variants work like your hand during the bag method (grabs, inverts the bag). Some others even have full moving cogs and levers to bag the business. However, this is not the most compact device to tote along for a walk.
So, you’ve got poop in a bag. Great! But now what? Compost is the greenest way to go, but if you don’t want to have a barrel of stink sitting in your backyard, try the Doggie Dooley Complete Waste System! Despite the amount of effort needed to install the digester, it’s rather pricey minimum $75.00 cost, and the fact that digester mix fluid is needed, this compact little system is an awesome high-tech solution to smell-free cleaning!
Do other options just not have enough...chemistry? PoopFreeze (yes, that is the product’s official name) solves that issue! The traditional methods depend on Mittens’ business to be “as usual.” But, sometimes, life isn’t that simple, and the conventional methods fall short of a sanitary goal. Poop-Freeze uses the magic of science and high-pressure gas to frost the offensive occurrence into a solid block. From there, a bag can be used for transportation into the nearest garbage. At around $20.00 a can, freezing isn’t really a practical day-to-day option, but it can make a world of difference on those extra messy days.
WHILE IT MIGHT STILL BE A WHILE UNTIL WE ARE ABLE TO VAPORIZE OUR TROUBLES AWAY, OUR DOGGIE WASTE DISPOSAL OPTIONS ARE IMPROVING. CULTURE FOR PETS
