As we brainstormed yearbook themes at a workshop in August, we knew this would be a monumental year. With Mr. Molak departing after having an extraordinary presence at Priory for over 30 years, we found our community in a state of transition. We picked the theme “to be continued” to commemorate not only the end of an era, but also to acknowledge that our story does not end here. As the year has progressed, this theme is more fitting than ever. From wildfires and power outages, to departures of beloved faculty in Mr. Molak, Mr. Schlaak, Ms. Faisal, Mr. Turner, Ms. Buccola and more, our lives were interrupted and we began to look to the future. However, we never saw what was coming when campus life was abruptly canceled in March, without knowing if we would ever return. A global pandemic is something we never could have anticipated. But that is not to forget all of the good memories we shared as a community together. The reopening of the new dining hall brought smiles and joy to students and kitchen staff alike. We shared countless laughs with one another during spirit week, seniors cried together during the college application process, and our community reflected together during chapel. For us, there is not something in particular that we miss. Rather, it is the warmth and joy we feel when we are together on campus that we long for in ways we never could have imagined. It is only by being apart that we realized how much we cherished being together. For our seniors, it is devastating that they are not able to say “goodbye” in ways that they expected, and now, they look to the future for closure. It seems like an unexpected end to an era in so many ways, but it is in this moment that we must remember that our lives will continue forward together. Although we are all at home, the spirit of the Priory community lives on. And when we reunite, whenever that may be, our story will continue. It is in this time of uncertainty and transition that we can find hope in the future.
Current status: to be continued.

dear
MR. SCHLAAK A dedication is a solemn affair One humorists must surely beware. But to speak on behalf of an extraordinary staff, Only laughter can capture their care. Now, there is one place in all Priory school Where any kid can just play it cool. Where you can laugh, take a nap, Or fix your bad rap When you maybe might have broken a rule. Is it the classrooms, which students bemoan? or Schilling Square, which we call our own? The gym, or the track, the garden, the PAC, the haunted house, with its weeds overgrown? No, these places are great, I can vouch, But all my memories there seem to slouch when I try to compare this bland everywhere to the comfort of Brian Schlaak’s couch.
I’ve spent many an hour lying still atop this great, pillowy hill Studying paintings on walls and green bowling balls, not sure where this couch gets its chill.
His eccentricities are rather bizarre He drives trucks or motorcycles instead of a car. People frequently gape at his tattoos of shapes, and his caches of jokes never lie far.
It’s cushions have fluff, to be sure, But in a room of questionable decor, for resting my brain from everyday strain, Not the couch, but the man, matters more.
But though he has friendly moments of lunacy, Mr. Schlaak runs our school with great prudency. And whether he’s causing our fears, or calming our tears, he understands the students with fluency.
To some he may seem rather gruff; His orientation speech sure scares enough. But it’s plain to see From his own integrity, Inside, he’s a marshmallow puff. I first met Mr. Schlaak as a child at family summer camp, where he wasn’t so mild. Though he’s rarely mature, serious, or demure, at Camp Blue he’s especially wild.
I’m not sure he knows how much he became The pillar ‘round which our school made its name. Brian’s spreading of smiles formed the Priory style, and without him, we just won’t be the same. So, for always having our backs, for fighting to keep us on track, and for the many great years of our lives that you’ve steered, We’d like to thank you, Mr. Schlaak.

thank you
MR. MOLAK
for 30 great years Dear Mr. Molak,
On behalf of the student body, we want to thank you for everything you have done for us. Throughout your thirty years, you have worked to make Priory a better place, a warmer school, and a more welcoming community. You have contributed immensely to the school in ways both immediately visible and behind the scenes. Your commitment and dedication have significantly transformed the campus. As seniors, we sincerely appreciate all these changes and we can say that our class benefits the most from the new construction. From a brand new square at the middle school to the addition of new B classrooms at the high school, from the STREAM center to the Franklin garden, from the Joe Montero Aquatic Center to the Father Christopher Field and Trudelle Family Track, your vision for the Priory landscape has allowed every student an opportunity to thrive in a beautiful, balanced setting. Of course, we also love the brand new dining hall with a delightful fountain and tasty food at lunch. We would also love to give you a shout-out for your unceasing hospitality to dormers. For us, who have to spend every single minute on campus, small surprises you do truly lighten our hearts after school days. As a leader of Priory administration, your commitment is inspiring. As a beloved member of our community, your existence has been and will be cherished. As an advocate for Benedictine values, you have demonstrated tremendous hospitality, individuality and integrity with everything you do. We will definitely miss you, your passion, and your heart in the future. We sincerely hope that you can enjoy your life during retirement. Please don’t feel sad because all the 2020 seniors are leaving with you as well. Always we begin again.

on a very “sadThisnoteyearforstarted the robotics team with the passing of our lead mentor George Schnurle. George was involved with the Priory robotics team since its inception when he was a student at Priory and served as a mentor for many years after his graduation from Stanford. The structure of the team as a student-centric and student-led organization is primarily due to George’s influence and will be a lasting tribute to his tenure with Barn2Robotics. George’s ability to listen to students concerns and to realize that robotics “isn’t just about robots” was one of his most endearing qualities and will be missed by all who worked with him.
”
- Richard Paige In 2001, a few Priory students with a “passion for engineering discovered the FIRST robotics program and created Priory’s first robotics team, Barn2Robotics. Among those students was George Schnurle. Always enthusiastic about Barn2Robotics, after graduating from college, George returned to Priory to mentor the team he created... He provided great mechanical insight, and more importantly, genuinely cared about us... To our team, George was much more than a mentor - he was a friend we all cherished.
George’s absence is my reality, but his presence was so “much more potent that this change seems flawed, unreal,

some sort of fake or conspiracy. He can’t be gone. He’s never been gone. He’s hiding behind every corner, every doorway, every stack of boxes. His laughter echoes in the whirring of machines, his silhouette hides in the contours of CAD models, every glint of red in my periphery is suddenly his jacket. He’s always about to walk through the door as if nothing ever happened. My brain understands his loss, but my heart refuses to accept it. I can’t always say that miss him, because I can’t miss someone who never left... George’s spirit lives on in small ways. Friendly conversation in the lab. Patiently teaching concepts to the uninitiated. Joy and laughter in the face of technical failures on the robot. Everything is the same, and everything is different.

When most people think of George, they inevitably think of “robotics. Somewhat ironically, the words I remember most from him are “it’s not about the robot,” which exemplifies both how he saw his role as a teacher and mentor and what he ultimately meant to his students. George valued the empathy, understanding, and acceptance that robotics offered to the Priory community, and took the time to make sure that each person he encountered felt known and loved. George made a huge difference in the lives of his students and will be dearly missed.
”
- Reid Matsuoka
George was a role model. From his “genuine enthusiasm for all things learning and robots, to his endless patience and love for FRC Team 751, George reminded us that no matter how tough things could get: with build season, school, and outside commitments, to keep pushing forward through the difficulties. George pushed us, despite how insurmountable life seemed, to never stop building robots.
”
- Luke Souter
George Schnurle attended each and “every meeting with a smile on his face and a can-do attitude that encouraged us to perform in our best capacity. He never neglected to mention when he thought we did a good job, whether it was with something small like leading a group discussion, or something larger like persisting through difficult circumstances. Every time I spoke to him about a student, he always came up with something new to say about why he appreciated them... For many of us, George was the trusted adult we needed in our lives. Furthermore, George was our mentor. Not our teacher, not our instructor, not our coach, but our mentor. To me, a mentor is the greatest thing a person can be.
George joined the CS department and taught 2 “classes, CAD2 and Maker, in 2016-2017. When visiting his classes, I loved the chaotic classroom filled with all kinds of somewhat weird and unconventional materials in which students worked on different projects. George truly empowered his students to be creative and take risks. A combination of deep listening and mindful counsel was his magic power that fostered and elevated students’ passions. He caringly guided and helped them complete their dream projects, whether it was an avocado inspired night light or a carthemed SD cardholder... Oh George, my partner, my brother, I miss you so much!

donate her organs for milk
always have a mug
laugh at her own jokes until she cries
bring you cookies when you’re feeling sad
prove her point with lots of evidence
give the whole world a hug if he could

To The Class of 2020, Senior year is always a year of transition, of change, of anticipating a new direction in education and beyond. Accompanying all of this are the traditions that are held dear by each class of graduates those things which create the memories that last a lifetime. But this year is different. Suddenly and most unexpectedly those anticipations are stolen by the virus that threatens the lives of people from around the world a global pandemic. A natural reaction might be, “Why us?” or “Why now?” Yet those questions have not been heard from the class of 2020. Rather than those questions, we are more likely to hear questions about how we can help, and how can we keep together as the community we have forged over these past years. The class of 2020, in spite of the need to be isolated for a time, will always be remembered for standing PRIORY STRONG. The Class of 2020 has taken its place in the long and proud history of the Priory. It has excelled in leadership qualities, strongly influencing the underclassmen with spirit and direction. Academic success, reflected in the diverse college opportunities offered to members of the class, has been outstanding. Interest and accomplishment in the arts, in drama, on the athletic fields has surely proven to be a stepping-stone for those to follow. Involvement in Campus Ministry activities and generous support for the various drives and appeals to relieve the suffering of those in need has been remarkable. The class of 2020 has indeed made a statement. May the Benedictine values of Community, Individuality, Hospitality, Spirituality and Integrity serve you well as you move on to yet another phase of your journey. May you keep each other safely in your hearts as you go your separate ways, and may you always remember the magic of these years, the community that loves you and as this year’s theme challenges us to -- ENVISION the best YOU.
With the warmest regards,
Mr. Molak

yearbook status:
TO BE CONTINUED We are writing this at 2:52 a.m. the day that the yearbook is due, or technically, overdue. We have come a long way from the beginning of the year, when all we had was a simple vision of what we wanted our book to look like. Tonight, 7 hours into finalizing (starting) our pages, we realized that procrastination is not the move. Christina is technically bailing me (Sarah) out because I did not do my pages on time :( We, as editors, have so many people to thank for helping and guiding us along this journey. We want to thank our yearbook staff, who have contributed greatly to creating and putting together pages. We want to thank Michele Paolini and the Herff Jones team for helping get the yearbook in our hands. Lastly, we give the greatest thanks to Mrs. Sargent for saving our butts every time, for being the best creative title maker, and for taking the best photographs. Words cannot express how grateful we that we have you as our mentor. We owe it to you. To the readers, we tried to do a subtle gradient throughout the book, we hope it works? We have no idea until we see the yearbook in print. Also, we hope you cherish this yearbook, and look back on it when you want to recall your middle school or high school memories. We wish that you like the yearbook as much as we do. Editor: Christina Cheng (11) “I tried but its 2 a.m. and my hair just looks awful”
Editor: Sarah Park (12) “I didn’t look good so I took a picture of myself on a better day”
