2023-2024

As we reflect on the past year, I am filled with gratitude and admiration for the way our community continues to embody our Benedictine values. These guiding principles—spirituality, hospitality, integrity, individuality, and community—are the foundation of everything we do at Priory, and they have once again shaped a year of growth and meaningful connections.

One of this past year’s blessings was witnessing how our students lived lives of meaning and balance. Through their actions and the support of our dedicated faculty, staff, coaches, moderators, and Monks, our students demonstrated that it is not only possible but enriching to excel in academics and co-curricular activities. Whether stepping onto the stage for a play or musical or onto the court for a game, our students balanced their passions and interests with grace and determination. Their ability to manage these commitments speaks volumes about their dedication and the holistic education they receive here at Priory.

This year’s report offers valuable insights and reflections from several members of our community. Buck Matthews shared the inspiring story of the Girls’ Basketball team’s success, a testament to teamwork, perseverance, and the power of believing in one another. Damian Cohen reflected on a class field trip to San Quentin, a profound experience that challenged our students to think deeply about justice, empathy, and the human condition. And Fr. Matthew’s reflections on the election of Abbot Issac offered us a glimpse into the spiritual life that is at the heart of our Benedictine community.

Because of you and everyone listed in this Impact Report, our students create a hope-filled future for all of us. Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to the many blessings and opportunities the next year will bring.

Gratefully,

2023–2024

Last year was a banner year for Priory Theater, with students performing in plays of diverse styles, accents, and locales.

The season opened with Pride & Prejudice, adapted by John and Lorilee Sugden. As Priory’s All School Play, middle and high school students were transported to 1700s England, mastering British accents, period dances, and connecting deeply with their characters. A cast of thirty-eight actors and thirty tech crew handled over thirty scene changes with skill and dedication, delivering a rich, emotionally charged performance.

Priory’s second play, Mamma Mia!, broke records. Set in a Greek hotel with Abba’s music, it sold out three of four shows—a first for Priory. The student cast and crew excelled with complex songs, dances, live microphones, and intricate lighting, creating four unforgettable nights. With thirty-two actors, eleven student musicians, and thirty-one techies, it was a massive community effort that had audiences on their feet, singing and dancing.

The final production was The Hound of the Baskervilles:

A Comic Thriller Starring Shirley Holmes and Jenny Watson, Priory’s Middle School play. This comedic retelling of the Sherlock Holmes story featured twenty-four actors and twenty-three techies, mastering British accents, comedic timing, and atmospheric stage effects, including hand-made sound effects. The result was four thrilling performances filled with humor, suspense, and stage fog.

Notably, over sixty percent of Priory’s student actors and tech crew are also athletes, balancing theater with after-school sports. This reflects Priory’s emphasis on a well-rounded lifestyle, where students learn time management, build diverse skills, and form lasting relationships across activities. Priory’s broad range of experiences helps students grow into versatile, resilient individuals, ready for future challenges.

HOOPS & DREAMS

The Radiant Rise of Priory’s Phenomenal Girls’ Basketball Team in 2024

The 2024 season is a vibrant tribute to the resilience, unity, and spirit of the Priory Girls’ basketball team, showcasing the growth of women’s athletics at Woodside Priory School. Under Coach Matthews’ leadership, the team has become a beacon of excellence and empowerment, leaving a legacy that resonates on and off the court. The season featured breathtaking achievements and a bond that epitomized true sisterhood.

Key players Ugreat Daniels ’26, Addie Chan ’25, and Carmela Fontes ’24 took center stage. Ugreat earned spots on the Bay Area All-State Underclass team and the SBLive Sports All-Central Coast Section 1st Team, captivating fans with her talent. Addie Chan received an Honorable Mention on the same list, while Carmela Fontes’ recruitment by Cal Poly, a renowned NCAA Division I school, highlighted the team’s exceptional caliber. Their contributions, alongside their teammates, led to the Priory’s title as West Bay Athletic League Co-Champions.

The team’s success is more than victories—it reflects the evolution of women’s sports at Priory, a school that transitioned from an all-male institution to one that welcomed female students in 1995. Assistant Coach Tatianna Reese, Priory Class of 2018 and a standout athlete, embodies empowerment and support, guiding the next generation of Priory women athletes. Coach Matthews, who transitioned from tennis to basketball, built the girls’ basketball program from the ground up, aligning with Priory’s values of unity and community. His commitment to the program and the administration’s support have fostered a culture of respect and excellence beyond the court.

Matthews’ tenure at Priory is marked by resilience and a dedication to character development and teamwork. The program’s holistic approach to player growth focuses on life skills and a supportive environment.

As the Priory Girls’ basketball team forges ahead, their journey represents a collective effort of coaches, players, administrators, and alums, all contributing to the future of women’s athletics at Woodside Priory School. The possibilities ahead are endless as they continue to build on this foundation of community and shared values.

JOURNEY TO UNDERSTANDING

Unveiling the Power of Restorative Justice at San Quentin

Priory’s criminology class embarked on an extraordinary journey to San Quentin, under the guidance of their passionate instructor, Damian Cohen. This immersive experience proved to be a profound exploration that deeply impacted both students and teacher, igniting a ripple effect of understanding and empathy.

In an illuminating interview with Damian Cohen, the intricate layers of the field trip unfolded, offering a unique perspective on the criminal justice system and the transformative force of restorative justice. Damian’s narrative revealed the origins of the trip, originating from his teachings in criminology and culminating in an eye-opening study of the rehabilitation initiatives within the institution.

The students were immersed in a world beyond the confines of the prison walls, witnessing firsthand the remarkable effects of restorative justice programs on the inmates at San Quentin. Interacting with “lifers” who had earned their path to redemption through active participation in rehabilitation activities allowed the students to witness the humanity and potential for growth within the incarcerated population. Whether it was training therapy dogs or contributing to the prison magazine, the inmates showcased a diverse array of talents, dispelling stereotypes and fostering understanding.

The field trip also delved into the harsh realities of life behind bars, as students confronted the stark complexities of the criminal justice system in encounters with inmates on death row. Despite these sobering moments, the experience sparked profound reflections and dialogues among the students, emphasizing the pivotal roles of compassion and second chances in a society steeped in punitive measures.

The impact of the field trip transcended the physical boundaries of the prison, inspiring robust conversations on restorative justice within the classroom. Damian shared how this transformative experience reshaped his teaching approach, instilling a more nuanced understanding of legal education and nurturing a culture of growth mindset among his students. Comparative explorations of international criminal law alongside domestic practices served as catalysts for expanding perspectives and honing critical thinking skills.

The journey to San Quentin left an indelible mark on all participants, challenging entrenched perceptions and fostering a profound comprehension of the intricate dynamics within the criminal justice system. The students’ reflections echoed a unified call for increased awareness and advocacy for the principles of restorative justice.

This field trip stands as a testament to the potency of experiential learning and the resilience of individuals in the face of adversity. Woodside Priory School’s criminology class embarked on a transformative quest guided by compassion, empathy, and a shared dedication to effecting positive change in the world. Their unwavering commitment to this noble cause serves as an inspiring beacon, encouraging others to embrace empathy and pursue transformative justice initiatives.

THE ABBEY’S NEW DAWN

FATHER MATTHEW DISCUSSES TRANSITION, TRADITION, AND TRANSFORMATION

In the tranquil halls of Saint Anselm in New Hampshire, the winds of change have swept through as the Benedictine monks embrace a new chapter in their storied history. These changes ripple through the monastery and reach us here at Priory. In an intimate conversation, Father Matthew—respected Priory monk and former Abbot—unveils the intricate and fascinating process behind the recent election of the monastery’s new Abbot, Brother Isaac Murphy, O.S.B. The interview not only highlights the rigorous election procedure but also underscores the enduring traditions that keep the Benedictine community united. Notably, it emphasizes our unique role, exemplified by Father Martin’s crafting of the crosier for each new Abbot.

The Election Process:

A Sacred Scrutiny

Dating back to the early medieval period, the Benedictine Order has maintained a rigorous tradition in electing Abbots, roles synonymous with spiritual leadership and administrative prowess. Father Matthew demystifies this elaborate election procedure, governed by both the law of the Benedictine Order and their specific congregation.

“When the Abbot indicates a desire to step down or reaches the age of 75, as Abbot Mark did, the community springs into a preparatory phase,” explains Father Matthew. “This involves months of reading and discussions about the qualities of an ideal Abbot. The actual process begins with a procedure known as ‘scrutinium’—an intense period of discernment and secret voting.”

On April 29 and 30, 2024, the monks of Saint Anselm Abbey gathered to elect their sixth abbot. Presided over by Abbot President Jonathan Licari, O.S.B. of the American-Cassinese Congregation, the election saw Brother Isaac emerging as the selected candidate. As ordination is a usual requirement for abbatial election, it necessitated

consultation and permission from the Holy See—the supreme body of government of the Catholic Church. This added an additional layer of discernment and scrutiny.

“The top contenders are subjected to detailed evaluations by their peers,” shares Father Matthew. “The discussions are candid and rigorous, ensuring every voice is heard and every perspective considered. The process culminates in a secret ballot requiring a simple majority for candidates who meet all canonical prerequisites. Brother Isaac’s unique position as a non-ordained monk necessitated a two-thirds majority and subsequent Vatican approval.”

On June 17, 2024, after receiving the Holy See’s permission, Brother Isaac Murphy, O.S.B., was confirmed as the sixth abbot of Saint Anselm Abbey.

Did You Know?

Priory has a tradition directly connected to Saint Anselm. For each election, Father Martin meticulously designs and creates a crosier, signifying the deep involvement of Priory in sacred rites.

Impact on Priory School

The ripple effects of the recent election extend far beyond the monastery in New Hampshire, significantly influencing Priory. As Father Matthew articulates, the role of the Abbot encompasses not only the spiritual and administrative well-being of the monastic community but also the various educational institutions under its wing, including Priory.

Priory’s Role in the Sacred Transition

We aren’t passive observers in this transition. Father Martin has upheld a cherished tradition here at Priory, crafting the ceremonial crosier for the new Abbot. This is more than a symbolic gesture; it signifies the deep, hands-on involvement of Priory in these sacred rites. Father Matthew elaborates on this unique contribution.

“For each election, Father Martin meticulously designs and creates the crosier. This tradition ties Priory directly to the heart of Saint Anselm’s monastic customs.” shares Father Matthew.

Father Martin’s exceptional woodworking skills have blessed many abbots over the years, and each crosier crafted by him is a blend of devotion, artistry, and spiritual reflection. These objects are not just ceremonial but carry the essence of continuity and dedication that Priory contributes to Saint Anselm.

“The Abbot’s responsibilities are comprehensive, spanning the entire community from the monastery to Priory,” he says. Under the previous Abbot, Abbot Mark Cooper, initiatives and programs at Priory flourished. With Abbot Isaac’s new leadership, these endeavors are set to continue evolving.

Abbot Isaac’s extensive academic background and his leadership roles at Saint Anselm College enrich his new position. Having served as Prior of Saint Anselm from 2005 to 2013 and Vice President for Academic Affairs since 2021, his vision brings a blend of scholarly depth and administrative expertise that is expected to positively impact Priory’s educational and spiritual programs.

The monks of Saint Anselm play a significant role in the day-today life at Priory, contributing to both the spiritual and academic curriculum. Abbot Isaac’s leadership will undoubtedly bring fresh perspectives and continued dedication to Benedictine educational values.

Final Reflections

The election of Abbot Isaac and the artistry of Father Martin epitomize the blend of tradition and innovation that characterizes Saint Anselm and, by extension, Priory. Guided by the Rule of Saint Benedict—a venerable yet adaptive document—these monks continue to navigate their roles with a profound sense of duty and faith.

Father Matthew’s reflections offer a window into a world where the sacred and the scholarly coexist harmoniously. “Leadership in the monastery is about maintaining a delicate balance—cherishing the heritage while embracing the future,” he concludes.

As the bells ring in acknowledgment of Abbot Isaac’s new role, their sound resonates not only through the tranquil halls of Saint Anselm but also through the classrooms and corridors of Priory, touching the lives of everyone connected to this enduring institution.

Special thanks to Golf Classic Co-Chairs Clare Patel and Sandra Vaughan for organizing this fantastic community event. We are also grateful to our sponsors, underwriters, and everyone who supported Priory Athletics through the live auction and Fund-a-Need. Thanks to your generosity, our athletes are the true winners!

Our ANNUAL FUND

The most important, valuable, and tangible way to demonstrate support for Priory is through a gift to the Annual Fund. These essential, unrestricted gifts directly support every Priory student by bridging the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Priory education. Our community is small by design, so every gift is important. Regardless of size, the gesture of support makes a tremendous difference. Priory’s vibrant culture of philanthropy is evidenced through our Annual Fund. We extend our deepest gratitude to those who gave last year, helping to make the Priory experience richer and more impactful for every one of our students.

Thank you.

SUSTAINING DONORS

Through the generosity of our sustaining donors who have given consecutively year-over-year, Priory has been able to meet changing needs and priorities as they arise. In addition to our giving societies, we also provide special recognition for those who have supported Priory every year for five or more consecutive years. Regardless of the amount, an annual gift is a valuable investment in our future.

Priory’s Mission

Woodside Priory School is a Catholic Benedictine, independent college preparatory school. Our mission is to assist all students in creating meaningful and balanced lives, developing as lifelong learners and stewards, and productively serving a world in need of their gifts.

Community

Together we find strength and purpose in supporting one another.

Priory’s Benedictine values

Hospitality

All are welcomed with honor and respect.

The Impact Report is published by the Advancement Office for the community of parents, alumni, friends, and family of Woodside Priory School.

Individuality

Every student has gifts to be discovered, nurtured, and treasured. Integrity Learning flourishes in an environment of honesty, trust, and personal responsibility.

Spirituality

God works in us, through us, and for us.

SUPPORTING THE PRIORY

For 67 years, Priory has been graced by the presence of our Benedictine monks, driven by the ambitions of talented teachers and administrators and backed by the generous support of the school’s donors. The Priory enjoys a robust culture of philanthrophy sustained by your faithful commitment. We are grateful.

Ways to Give

Gifts to Priory may be made by cash, check, credit card or apprecated stock.

Stocks or Securities

A gift of appreciated stock offers a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift.

Matching Corporate Gifts

Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that could double the contribution to Priory. Check with your Human Resources Depart-ment to see if your employer matches charitable gifts.

Gifts-In-Kind

Items may be donated to Priory, such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment, which provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of Priory. The school does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind.

Planned Gifts

Donors may consider giving bequests through wills or trusts, life insurance, retirement plan donations and life income gifts. Estate planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner which considering any type of planned gift. We honor those individuals who have made a lasting commitment to our school by including charitable gifts to the Priory in their estate. Those who re-member the Priory through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift are invited to join our St. Benedict Society, which recognizes this special form of lasting philanthrophy.

Please contact Alex Tenorio, Director of Advancement for more information.
