1 COMMONS BRED IN CONTRAST TSARTNOC The design goal is to create a high rise living community and public recreation center emulating that of a mountain and vertical village relationship. An interesting relationship between the smaller solid mass, which serves as the community gym, and the tall canopy of apartment units generates a solid, void condition in the sky. The gym space below is connected to the iconographic gable roof apartments by a vertical hiking trail. The roofs of the apartment units form a greenspace directly off of the trail encouraging both the public and residents to exercise in our m a n u f a c t u re d e c o s y s t e m .

By using a fractal Grasshopper Script, and inputing into this script two traditional, architectural units such as a chimney and gable roof at different sizes and scales, we were able to develop five different systems including a horizontal core circulation, a canopy of apartment units, vertical chimney structure, a hiking trail, and a smaller mass becoming a public recreation space. All of these systems were combined to create a living and active space.

The Maker City Hostel is designed based around the concept of make, stay, and grow. Set in Knoxville, TN (the maker city), this space is designed to provide a space for local artists, the knoxville community, and travelers to come together and experience the best aspects of the East Tennessee city. Fishbowl studios create an interactive and educational connection between the observer and artists in residency in that people visiting the space can have a first-hand view of the art which is displayed and sold in the building.. On the second floor, visitors from near and far can stay in a hostel-style, or traditional style hotel room to promote tourism and community in the re-purposed building

We b e g a n t h e s t u d i o b y u s i n g the inspiration of kit bashed architecture to manipulate mechanical objects, creating complex arrangements to then merge into a traditional home o n G o v e n o r s I s l a n d i n N e w Yo r k City. I cultivated an interest in the overlapping and repetition of elements to create a visual texture and connection between the “parts of the
whole”. I worked with this dense model to find the
functionality within the chaos and diagram the potential of the space becoming an artist’s residence and gallery hall, using every crevace of the large living machine, and blurring the lines between public and private space.
