Come out and play
BEST MUD RUN IN ARIZONA — A ‘BEAST OF A COURSE’
Rim Country residents and visitors alike are invited to come out and play June 3-5 at the 8th Annual Mountain High Games. To kick things off at 5 p.m., Friday, June 3 Rim Country law enforcement officers will take on local fire departments for bragging rights on the Mogollon Monster Mudda Course. Enjoy the fun of cheering on your local heroes and bring a can of food for area food banks. Last year the fire teams won ... but expect the LEOs to regroup and bring it this year. The main event, real deal Mud Run is Saturday, June 4. The 4th Annual Mogollon Monster Mudda 5K starts with two elite heats, one at 8:30 a.m. and the other at 8:45 a.m. The elite heats are designed for higher-level obstacle course racing runners in above normal competitive shape. They are not open to day-of registration. Non-restricted heats begin at 9 a.m. and are open to all, for those 12 and older, with competitors released onto the course in groups of 40. The cost is $70 per person with online as well as day-of registration available. There are 45 man-made and natural obstacles on the 5K mountain trail course this year. Expect it to test you in every way
imaginable. The course consists of challenging ups and downs, rocky, wooded and wet terrain, shallow water crossings and lots of mud. (See accompanying article on the various obstacles). There will be a KIDZ Mud Run immediately following the adult mud run Saturday, June 4. Cost will be $5 and the ages are 6-11. You can register online at www. paysonrimcountry.com for the KIDZ Mud Run or on the day of the race. ATV TRAIL RIDES
A trio of special ATV Trail Rides is also part of the 8th Annual Mountain High Games. The rides are limited to 50 participants. The first takes place starting at 5:45 p.m., Friday, June 3. Experienced ATV trail guides will lead participants on the Snowstorm Mountain Night Ride. Those that sign up for this ATV trail ride will experience some of Rim Country’s most pristine countryside. At the halfway point they will watch the sun set over the East Verde River and listen to the majestic voice of Payson’s own Town Historian Jinx Pyle as he sings some of his favorite ballads and tells stories of days gone by. Don’t miss this folks ... it’s a great time. The Table Mountain Ride and Poker Run starts at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 4. This Craig Miller photo adventurous ride showcases some wonderful and breathtaking backcountry. Hope for hot weather this weekend because the Mogollon Monster Mudda promises to get you wet CONTINUED ON PAGE 4

ATV trail rides get into back country table top, hence the name of the ride, Table Mountain. This area is full of old mines where prospectors set out to make their fortunes; unfortunately lady luck was often brutal and offered up only misfortune. Full of twisting turns, a hill affectionately named by the locals as the “Rocky Bitch” awaits you on this ride. Enjoy old stories of this area from your guides as you explore some of the most rugged landscape in Arizona. To also entertain you we have planned a poker run during this trail ride. At certain points along the way you will receive playing cards. At the end of the ride you will have the chance to play your hand. The best hand will walk away with a brand new television from Walmart, one of the Games’ sponsors. This ride is rated “intermediate.”
The Rim Country boasts some of the best trails for ATV adventures in the state. To take advantage of that fact, Payson’s Mountain High Games feature a series of group trail rides. Only 50 riders will be allowed to participate in each of the three planned rides. The fee for all three is $60 per person and includes a barbecue dinner Friday night, June 3 and a commemorative T-shirt, money-saving coupons, admittance to the three rides, one of which is a poker run with a large TV as the prize for the winning hand. The fee for non-rider participants is $30 per person and also includes the barbecue and shirt. To participate in just a single ride is $25 and includes the T-shirt. All participants must wear a helmet on all the rides. Riders without a helmet will be removed from the rides and their entry fees will be forfeited.
Royal Flush Mountain Ride – 22 miles
THE RIDES
Snowstorm Mountain Trail Ride – 16 miles
This ride starts at 5:45 p.m., Friday, June 3. The trail leaves from the Payson Event Center and is 16 miles long. Along the way you will encounter gorgeous views of the Mazatzal Mountain Range. This ride is meant to be a shorter ride due to the fact that it is an evening ride. Do not underestimate the beauty of this ride as you will be surrounded on both sides by gigantic mountain ranges. Halfway through the ride you will have the chance to stop and enjoy a breathtaking sunset, while you are perched on a large rock face overlooking the East Verde River. During this time you will be serenaded by one of Payson’s own, Town Historian Jinx Pyle. He will share with you several stories of the region as well as sing to you some old ballads that will certainly leave you feeling a sense of nostalgia. This ride also takes you right past one of the old mines, where miners back at the turn of the century drilled a hole through pure rock; whether they found gold or not is still a mystery. Don’t forget your camera and a set of binoculars

as well as a flashlight. There are a few rocky portions of this trail with a few steep inclines, but for the most part this trail is rated “beginner.” Table Mountain Ride Poker Run – 32 miles
This ride starts at 8 a.m., Saturday, June 4. The trail leaves from the Payson Event Center and is 32 miles long. This will be a fun ride for the “kid at heart!” Get ready to get up close and personal with the Mazatzal Mountain Range. This ride has some of the most beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding area. One of the defining features of this ride is a large mountain that is flat and resembles a
YOU WILL BE TRAILERING TO THIS TRAILHEAD. This ride starts at 8 a.m., Sunday June 5. Participants will gather at the Payson Event Center and then all travel to the trailhead. The trailhead is approximately 3 miles from the Payson Event Center. This trail is full of rich history. This area is where one of the bloodiest family feud wars ever happened. You have all heard of the Hatfields and the McCoys. Rim Country had its own notorious feud between the sheep herding Tewksburys and cattle raising Grahams. Over about a five-year period there was more blood spilt between these two families than any other feud in the western United States. You will also experience some of the most rugged, yet beautiful territory in this area, so rugged it is named the Hellsgate Wilderness. At the end of one of the side trails you will have the opportunity to see the large canyon called “Hole in the Ground” as well as hear several stories as you pass by old mining claims that are said to still have “Gold in them thar hills.” Get ready for a ride to remember! This ride is rated “intermediate” with some rocky areas that would not be suitable for small children or unskilled riders.

The event starts at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 4. The 2016 Mogollon Monster Mudda has 45 obstacles of varying degrees of difficulty for contestants to overcome. MOGOLLON MONSTER MUDDA OBSTACLES

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although you would prefer to move forward at a steady pace, it might be a good idea to stop and reassess your plans. You could find a good reason to make a change at this time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Just when you thought you had everything planned to the smallest detail, you get some news that could unsettle things. But a timely explanation helps put it all back on track. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Home and work continue to compete for your attention. But you handle it well by giving each its proper due. Someone you trust offers valuable advice. Listen to it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Unsettling news creates a difficult but not impossible situation. Continue to follow your planned routine, but keep your mind open to a possible change down the line. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Lick your wounded pride if you like, but it’s a better idea to find out why your suggestions were rejected. What you learn could help you deal with an upcoming situation. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Feeling a bit listless? No wonder. You might be pushing too hard to finish everything on your to-do list. Cutting it down could help get your energy levels up. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Taking time out of your busy schedule might be the best way to handle that sensitive private matter. It will help reassure everyone involved about your priorities. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Insist on full disclosure by all parties before agreeing to be part of a “great deal.” What you learn should help you decide whether to go with it or not. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your decision to protect the secret that was entrusted to you might irk some people. But it also wins you the admiration of those who value trust and loyalty. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Creative activities take on a practical approach as you realize you might be able to market your work. Ask for advice from someone experienced in this area. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) If you’re suddenly a bit unsure about your decision, ask trusted colleagues and/ or friends or family members for suggestions that could help resolve your doubts. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A workplace situation could get stormy. But stay on course until there’s a solution that meets with everyone’s approval, and things finally can calm down. BORN THIS WEEK: You keep an open mind on most matters, making you the confidante of choice for people who need your honest counsel.
