Fiddle Championships, Old Time Opry and Acoustic Celebration this weekend It’s time to get out and get entertained and that’s what the 46th Anniversary Vertielee Floyd Old Time Fiddlin’ Arizona State Championships, Country Acoustic Celebration and the Old Time Opry promise. Friday evening, Sept. 23, the weekend kicks off right with Payson’s patented Old Time Opry concert at Payson’s Longhorn Auditorium at the Payson High School. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6:30 p.m. show. This year’s Opry features the western swing and cowboy songs of the biggest little band in the land, The Western Flyers, as well as The Purple Hulls bluegrass band (read more about these featured artists in accompanying stories). Guests can also expect to hear from
special guests the DeRusha Family Band and maybe even the current, three-time Arizona State fiddle champion Joseph Turner. Admission is $8. Tickets are available at the Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism office, 1000 W. Country Club Drive in Green Valley Park. The 46th Anniversary Old Time Fiddlin’ Arizona State Championships start Saturday morning, with the state’s top fiddler crowned Sunday afternoon. There is much to enjoy in between. Gates of the Payson Event Center open at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 24. Tickets are $5 for the entire contest day! are planned throughout the day. This will be followed by the newest addition to the festivities — the very first Masters Hot Bow competition. This is an open, knock your socks off, bring all ya got, fiddle blowout, aimed at the best fiddlers in Arizona, and beyond. And there’s a $1,001 winner take all prize for the fiddler with the most impressive tunes. The DeRusha Family Band is featured in a program from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday at the special dinner concert and informal jam by the fire. The band is the 2015 Bands competition winner. The dinner includes pulled pork and all the fixin’s, including a sweet treat at the end. Gates open at 5 p.m. for this wonderful fiddle-n-feed event, and the
cost is only $10 for dinner and the show! Sunday morning, as always, gates will open at 8:30 a.m. and the free Gospel Time will begin at 9 a.m. and last through 10:30 a.m., with The Purple Hulls offering a short performance, there will also be some open stage time for the fiddlers who want to perform gospel tunes. At 11 a.m. the Grand Championship fiddle divisions start and the new 2016 Arizona State Fiddling Champion will be crowned. Admission is $5 dollars for the championship rounds. The day’s activities typically conclude between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. For more information, please call Payson Parks, Recreation and Tourism at 928-472-5110.

The Payson Old Time Opry features The Purple Hulls Friday, Sept. 23 at the Payson High School Auditorium. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with the concert starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $8 per person. The duo will also take part in the Payson Old Time Fiddle and Acoustic Celebration’s free Gospel program at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 25 at the Payson Event Center and then appear at the Church on Randall Place in Pine at 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 25 The Purple Hulls are identical twins Katy Lou and Penny Lea Clark. Raised on a working family farm in the deep piney woods of East Texas, they found their way to the hills of Tennessee, specifically, Music City, where they began touring with various country artists and writing songs for Nashville’s largest publishing company, Sony Tree. The Purple Hulls are no stranger to road life and are now blazing the trail as a dynamic sister duo, showcasing their unique sibling harmonies while ripping the strings off any instrument they can get their hands on. The Purple Hulls’ latest release, “Why We Sing,” is a collection of original songs and freshly arranged favorites. Self-produced by Katy Lou and Penny Lea, the album includes a mix of both gospel and secular tunes with great contributions by Andy Leftwich and Bryon House. The duo’s first release was “Ten Thousand Exits” and featured all original songs. Recorded at Sony Studio B on Music Row in Nashville, Tenn., this 10-song disc showcases their unique harmonies and bluegrass/country flavors. Their second project was “Close to Home” released in April of 2012. Co-produced by Andy Leftwich of Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, this refreshing gospel album includes some of the Hulls’ favorite hymns, news songs, and originals.

Yes, the performances at the Payson Old Time Opry and Fiddle Fest are great, but the truly tremendous thing about both programs – they build bridges across generations and gender with a shared love of music.

Fiddle Fest features new Masters Hot Bow event Saturday The Masters Hot Bow contest is a new entry in the line up of fun planned for the 2016 46th Anniversary Old Time Fiddle Contest and Acoustic Celebration this weekend. It will take place at the end of the age group competition and before the Fiddle-in Band contest Saturday, Sept. 24. It’s an open, stand-alone fiddle contest, not a State Championship category, with the winner taking home $1,001 in prize money. The Masters Hot Bow contest is not a traditional old time fiddle fixture. Tunes not generally allowed in traditional fiddle contests, due to bowing techniques or “show” value are allowed in this contest. There is no prohibition on tunes, bowing techniques or tunings. Only eight contestants will be allowed to compete, so check with the Payson Parks office to see if there are any openings left, call 928-472-5110. • Contestants will play three tunes within a seven-minute time limit. These must include a slow tune, a fast tune, (does not have to be a waltz and hoedown, but can be), and a tune of the fiddler’s choice, at any speed. Contestants may stop between tunes, or not, at their discretion. • Contestants must give their tunes, in writing, and in order of performance (tune sheet) to the master of ceremonies who will announce the numbers prior to contestant beginning their performance. • The master of ceremonies will call for all contestants to report to the backstage area when the last state championship division of the day begins for the purpose of drawing for performance order. Contestants who do not report for the drawing will go to the back of the performance order and someone else will draw for them. • Contestants must be ready to take the stage immediately after the previous contestant completes their performance and their name is announced. If you are not ready, you will
lose your chance to compete and your entry fee will not be reimbursed. • Contestants or accompanists are prohibited from singing or audible augmentation of tunes. • Contestants may talk to the audience to establish stage presence, but, too much talk, jokes, introductions, etc., may adversely affect your score. • Judges will watch and hear the entire performance from the front of the stage, in order to view stage presence. • Appropriate and professional attire is encouraged and may affect scoring. • Contestants may use a maximum of two accompanists. Accompanist instruments shall play only rhythm. Accompanists playing lead or harmony parts will penalize the fiddle contestant’s score. • If contestant breaks a string, they may continue or stop. If they continue, tunes will be judged as played. If the fiddler stops, he/she will be allowed reasonable time to replace the string, and begin with that tune, and complete his/ her program. The seven-minute time limit will be adjusted to the start of that tune. This rule will apply only to the fiddler and not the accompanists. This rule will apply to any major mechanical failure of the fiddle or bow that would render the instrument unplayable, at the judge’s discretion. JUDGING CRITERIA
• Rhythm and Timing: Judges will listen for even, consistent timing. Tunes played at danceable tempos are preferred over those not. • Tone quality, clarity and general command of the instrument. • Creativity • Originality: Fiddling Ability & Showmanship are more desirable than technical perfection. • Stage Presence Judges for the Masters Hot Bow contest will be the same three judges that are judging the championships, with two others.

Old Time Opry features The Western Flyers The Western Flyers will be featured at the Payson Old Time Opry Friday, Sept. 23. The evening’s performances start at 6:30 p.m., with doors of the Payson High School Auditorium opening at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $8 per person. The Western Flyers are one of the most exciting new bands to glide onto the music scene in years. Their music is a distinctive cross section of the Great American Songbook: authentic western swing, hot jazz and swing standards, cowboy songs and electrifying old-time fiddle tunes. Internationally renowned guitar master Joey McKenzie drives the train with his powerful rhythm, while reigning National Swing Fiddle Champion Katie Glassman and worldclass upright bassist Gavin Kelso add fuel to the fire. A blending of tradition and innovation, The Western Flyers are a singular musical experience; a fresh take on a venerable American art form
performed by three virtuosos of the genre. Glassman is that rare musician who possesses a combination of instrumental virtuosity and powerful musical expression. She is one of the country’s most renowned and decorated Texasstyle and swing fiddlers, as well as an accomplished songwriter, singer, and a highly sought after teacher. In 2015 and 2016, Katie won the National Swing Fiddle Championship in Weiser, Idaho, took first in both the Bob Wills and Open divisions at the Bob Wills Festival and Fiddle Contest in Greenville, Texas and is the three-time reigning Colorado state fiddle champion. Guitarist Joey McKenzie and bassist Gavin Kelso are Katie’s counterparts on their instruments; lifelong devotees of western swing and Texas fiddle music they have completely immersed themselves in the style. one of the best swing rhythm sections a fiddler could hope to play over. McKenzie is universally recognized as one of the finest rhythm guitarists of our time, a peerless practitioner of the most essential element to all music. His lifelong immersion in western swing and Texas fiddle styles has made him the pre-eminent authority as a player and teacher over a wide range of traditional American genres. Whether backing up a fiddle tune or a complex jazz arrangement, his absolute command of the instrument leaves listeners and musicians alike in wonder. His first musical experience began at age of 11, tuning the instruments his father had around their house in McMinnville, Ore. — a guitar, mandolin, tenor guitar, and a tenor banjo. Around the age of 12, he started learning a few chords and licks on each of the instruments and has been playing them ever since. Some of his titles include: three-time World Champion Fiddler, World Series of Fiddling Champion, U.S. Open Fiddle Champion, and National Men’s Fiddle Champion. As a touring musician, Joey thus far has performed in 45 U.S. states and toured Canada, Europe, Russia and South America. Kelso has been addicted to musical vibration for as long as he can remem-
ber. At his home in Neosho, Mo., his parents had a wonderful collection of rock ’n’ roll, rhythm and blues, and jazz records; and some of his earliest memories include sitting in front of the stereo, mesmerized by the sounds. It wasn’t long before he knew definitively that his relationship with music could not and would not be limited to listening to it; and it was around this time that he began to recognize a common element in almost all the music he loved — great bass lines. Within his first year of playing the electric bass, he progressed from playing along with recordings in his basement to playing in school ensembles and becoming a sought-after professional in the Four State Area. It was during this time that he discovered the double bass, the instrument that would become his true musical voice. Upon graduation from high school, Kelso moved to Denton, Texas, where he enrolled in the largest double bass program in the world and immersed himself in the study of the bass and of classical music under the tutelage of world-renowned pedagogue and performer Jeff Bradetich. A resident of Dallas, Texas, he currently maintains a busy schedule performing and recording regionally, nationally, and internationally with many artists in a wide variety of genres, as well as teaching private lessons.

AT THE MOVIES
SULLY
Film of highest order BY ANDY MCKINNEY MOVIE REVIEWER
Only the most talented movie people could make such an interesting — compelling even — movie about an event that everyone knows about and where everyone knows the final outcome. We have no suspense here. What we do have is movie making of the highest order. Captain Chesley Sullen berger, a pilot for 42 years, a man who successfully brought hundreds of thousands of passengers safely from here to there, had his hands on the controls when his aircraft sucked in a flock of birds that knocked out his engines. He lost both engines at less than 3,000 feet of altitude while still ascending from his take off point. No airplane had suffered this particular calamity before — there existed no pat manual response. Sully saved the lives of 155 people that day, including his own. America rightly rejoiced. To make such a movie, first hire Clint Eastwood as director. Then hire Tom Hanks to play Sully. I am in the process of revisiting Hanks’ long list of films and I can attest that even as a young actor he could make an ordinary film memorable. But we do not view an ordinary film here. We know how the narrative rolls, so I can talk about it this time. In one moment of grand acting Hanks shows just how great he is as an actor. After the water landing the passengers found safety in one or another of a handful of ferryboats. No one knew who went where. No one knew if every passenger and crew member survived. At some point the authorities officially tallied the survivors against the souls on board the aircraft and let Sully know. The relief and gratitude on Hanks’ face told it all. Tom Hanks starred in the movie, but he had strong back up. Aaron Eckhart plays the co-pilot with the surety we expect from an actor with 39 credits. Laura Linney plays the worried Mrs. Sullenberger. This four-and-a-half saw blade film runs for one hour and 36 minutes. It has a budget of $60 million, carries a PG-13 rating and has returned a promising $45 million so far at the box office. This fine film is another example of Clint Eastwood’s talent off screen.
