BEST OF THE RIM 2016

A celebration More than 500 people gathered recently at the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino ballroom to find out which businesses won the votes of Payson Roundup readers in the annual “Best of the Rim” voting. Our readers cast more than 90,000 ballots for their favorites of just about everything — including happy hours, places to meet singles, police officers, firefighters, steak dinners, barbers and some categories that will surprise you. The event drew a record crowd, eager to celebrate the accomplishments of the businesses who help define Rim Country. Along the way, they also generate the sales tax and the economic activity that supports the town — including police and fire services. Many of the business owners who attended said that after years of struggling to escape the effects of the Great Recession, they’re finally seeing a growth in business. The cadre of dreamers and hard-headed realists who have weathered the economic storms took the time to celebrate —and congratulate one another on winning the hearts — and the votes of Rim Country residents. So pull up a chair, take a look at the winners in every category. Some you’ll already know and love. The rest you’ll want to make a point of getting to know. So here it is — the Best of the Rim.

Payson Roundup readers cast 90,000 votes to pick their favorites in 70 categories. See all the winners inside!

He said the company offers the best customer service and entertainment in the Rim Country. But when asked why he thought the hotel and casino were awarded the Best of the Rim recognition, he had other ideas. “It’s the people who work here,” he said, “it’s team members — that’s what makes this place a success.” He said it’s not only locals that love the Mazatzal, but also outof-towners who stop by and rave about the customer service. “They say we make them feel comfortable and welcome,” said Giles.

Best Business Person: Scott Crabdree

Although he was named Best Business Person, Scott Crabdree was quick to give his team all the credit. “A vote for me is a vote for my staff.” Crabdree took over the business in 1996 and has had some employees with him nearly that long. One employee recently retired after 26 years and another has been with him for 12 years. Crabdree got into the insurance business in 1991 through his parents who then owned the business. Being an independent insurance agency, Crabdree works with many companies and offers all levels of coverage. Crabdree said his staff is knowledgeable and professional. Asked when he plans to retire, Crabdree said he has no plans. “I enjoy the people I work with and I still think it is fun to go to work every day.” Crabdree described his staff as family. Ninety-eight percent of his customers are local and some go back 40 years. “I am very thankful to the community.”

Payson Town Councilor

Donny Garvin

Gina Perkes

Payson crowned Donny Garvin and Gina Perkes Best Bachelor and Bachelorette in Rim Country. How much longer either is a bachelor is questionable. The couple of seven months talked marriage after their win. While not engaged, Perkes joked that was because she had not asked Garvin, yet. The couple met after Garvin stumbled on Perkes quilting website. Garvin said he was looking for a blanket with a patriotic theme and wanted to buy one of Perkes’ quilts. The rest is history as they say. Perkes is planning to open the Copper Needle, a quilting store in Payson, later this year.

Chris Higgins

Payson Police Officer Donny Garvin is no stranger to winning the Best of award, he just isn’t sure why he wins every year. Still, he is thankful to the community and the team he works with. He said he hopes another officer will win every year so they can share the award, but feels very humble to win again. Garvin has been with the PPD since 1992 and plans to retire no later than 2019. Garvin accepted the award on behalf of all of the record and dispatch employees at the PPD saying they have come through a challenging time and he is optimistic things will get better.

Police Officer Runners-up:

Justin Deaton (PPD) Jayson Hazelo (PPD)

Chris Higgins was surprised and very honored the residents of Payson voted him the Best Payson Councilor. “We try to be active in the community out and about with visibility and participation,” he said. Higgins is often at all the community events from the Fourth of July fireworks to the rodeo with his ice cream cart through his cafe Scoops. The first-term council member has found working under the open meeting laws a little challenging, however. “I find it frustrating,” he said. “There hasn’t been a lot of communication outside of town hall ... if you have good intentions and you want to discuss matters more — it’s very hard.”

Craig Miller once again earned top honors partly as a result of the stunning quality of his images — but also because he donates countless hours to make sure there is a record of community events. Miller also serves as a disc jockey for events all over town. He donates images routinely to the Roundup to make sure people get their pictures in the paper. He and his wife, Ann, took a break from taking all the photos in this special section to accept their award.

Family Restaurant Lunch Restaurant Hamburger Sandwich

The death of Macky’s Grill owner Greg Day this year after a long, brave struggle with cancer proved a hard blow to the community he had supported for so many years. We only wish he’d been able to see his family collect four first-place awards at the Best of the Rim celebration. In years past, Greg was honored as the “most inspirational” person in Payson by Roundup readers. His family has carried on his legacy and put in the kind of hard work he always relished in making Macky’s the most award-winning restaurant in town.

The Wapiti Painting Co., 210 S. Tonto St., has been in business since 1993. The staff of six currently services around six to 10 customers a month. The business’ motto is “Quality You Deserve.” Owner Jim Nelson said Wapiti means elk in Shawnee. Pictured: Jim Nelson Sr. and Jim Nelson Jr.

Juan Jimenez

Juan Jimenez, the owner of JJ’s Barber Shop in the Bashas’ shopping center, has won the award repeatedly in the years he’s been trimming Payson noggins. He says the shop sticks to the basics: “We go real slow and professional. We take our time. Don’t rush anybody through. Do what they want.” He relies on a core of experienced barbers, with several other barbers in the shop approaching 50 years of experience each. He brought barbers Fred Blevins and Art Wellington into the photo.

Under the Kevin Dick umbrella, the company works with clients in 22 states, managing those with millions to the investor with a few hundred a month. Dick said he faithfully works all of his clients, both big and small. Pictured are Pam Bossert, Carrie Dick, Kevin Dick, Micah Crabdree and Diane Greer.

Gloria Hamelin, Rebecca Kincanon, Tim Weibe, Dave Cook, Leroy Tafoya, Nicole Adams and Juan Diego showed up to represent the store’s 124 employees who serve 4,000 customers per month with the motto: Let’s Do This! Operations Manager Nicole Adams said Home Depot would do what it takes to make a construction project work. “We have people coming in all the time and they have this thing-a-ma-jiggy and they need it fixed,” said Adams. So, staff patiently asks lots of questions then gets it done.

Best Teacher

Scott Crabdree

Nicole Ward (RCMS)

Scott Crabdree’s agency remains a solid favorite in the Best of the Rim voting, having missed the top spot only three times. Seven people work in his office now. “You have to pick the right company, the right coverage — you don’t just represent one company.” The firm struggled in the wake of the recession, since it provided coverage for many construction firms, most of them laid low by the collapse of the building industry in the region. But the economy is “coming back in the last couple of years,” he said. “We’re seeing a lot of commercial stuff, new businesses — and the contractors are picking up again. We’re seeing an upturn.”

Runners-up:

Farmers Insurance • State Farm

Best Local Music Band Junction 87

Billy Ichida, Bob Lewis and Jim Norman founded the beloved local band in 2005. The three local country band members have a joking, jovial manner that comes through on the stage. No wonder they are voted the Best Local Band year after year. Together for eight years, they often play in bars. Not a surprise then where they met. “We met at a jam session at the Rye Bar,” said Bob Lewis. Their collaboration has landed them in some pretty interesting locations, like Japan — but that probably has to do with Billy. He’s Japanese. “We’ve been to Japan twice,” said Lewis. “We did a gig in San Francisco.” “If we come up with the money, we go,” said Ichida. Playing every Sunday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Buffalo Bar and Grill doesn’t hurt their reputation either.

This is the second time Nicole Ward has won the Best of the Rim award, but this year her principal, Jennifer White, was sneaky in the way she got everyone to vote for the Best Teacher award. “She sent the link to parents (and staff) to vote for the Best of the Rim,” said Ward. “So I voted.” Ward attributes her recognition to the way she treats her students. “I just listen to them,” she said. “I look at their work ... it’s like a puzzle. It’s like this big Sudoku puzzle.” Ward teaches math through algebra at the middle school. She makes sure she is available before, at lunch and after school to help kids who need a little more understanding. Her math teacher and basketball coach at Payson, Max Foster, inspired her to become a teacher. “Everything is because of Max Foster,” she said. “He taught me how to teach math.”

He moved to the area from Illinois to “live the dream.” He and his wife Donnalyn said they feel very grateful for the win and their clients. This is the eighth time the practice has taken home the Best Chiropractor award. “It is gratifying when patients do well (and improve); it makes it worthwhile.” Pictured are Dr. Chuck and Donnalyn Williams.

Best Accountant Lisa Taylor (Taylor Accounting)

This is the sixth win for Lisa Taylor and her accounting team of three at 604 W. Frontier St. Taylor’s team includes her daughter, daughter-in-law and a close family friend. Half of the team focuses on accounting while the other half works on taxes. This year, they anticipate completing 1,000 tax returns. Taylor said unlike some tax preparation places, they take at least 2.5 weeks to complete each tax return with at least two people checking it for accuracy. The Taylor Accounting staff includes Lisa Taylor, Ashlee Johns, Sara Rhoda and Katy Taylor.

Payson Roundup BEST OF THE RIM Friday, February 26, 2016 Deb Nichols Deb Nichols (High Country Family Care (200 W. Frontier St.) worked as a nurse-practitioner for almost 20 years before she went out on her own three years ago. She originally moved to Payson from the Valley to get away from the high crime rate. Then she took a big gamble on setting up her own practice. “I wanted more autonomy, more responsibility and to do things right.” Her practice has proved a vital blessing for many Rim Country residents — especially people without insurance that can cover doctor bills for the many conditions that Nichols can handle. “There’s an incredible need for quality rural health care and a lot of people are without insurance.” She said the uninsured account for about 60 percent of her patients. “We have a lot of cash patients — and we love it. It’s rewarding to know we’re able to take care of the uninsured and underinsured.”

Even people who have coverage — including Medicare — find themselves struggling to get prescriptions and manage co-pays. “People have Medicare, but it’s not enough.” Moreover, patients increasingly need an advocate, given the efforts of insurance compa-

nies to limit treatment options to reduce costs. She brought along Lindsy Nichols, Shalaina Simpson and Jennifer Merritt to share in the award. She said her offices average about 100 patients a month — and lives by the motto: “An Apple a Day.”

For Kim Ross, being a Realtor with Keller Williams Arizona Realty is more than just making money. “We have the opportunity to guide our clients through making one of the biggest purchases they will ever make in their life. With that, our clients have to trust and believe in us.” Ross said she works on a team with lenders, the title company, insurance companies, inspectors and so many others to make a transaction go smoothly. In the past year, Ross said she has seen fewer foreclosures and more buyers looking for new homes. Vacant land is also selling as well as commercial property. Ross says she loves being a Realtor. “I listen to my clients and hear what they are saying to me. I am not perfect, but I try my best to make everyone happy. I am honest, ethical and knowledgeable.”

Mattress Experts & More

From Ashley to Sealy and nearly every brand in between, Mattress Experts & More carries a full line of mattress options as well as items to furnish an entire home. Furniture is new for the store, which Cindy Gregory and Kristine McCormack opened in August 2010. From mattresses, the women added bed frames, headboards, bedding, sofas and recliners. The 4,500-square-foot store is stocked mostly with mattresses, but McCormack and Gregory have a large online catalog.

Charlie’s (405 S Beeline Hwy. #A) owner Charles Adcock started his business in 1998, after working as Smitty’s for 17 years as a meat cutter. He had a friend that opened a shop like the one he owns. So, I learned to make sausage there,” he said. Tired of living in the big city of Mesa and wanting to raise his kids in a rural area, Charlie moved to Payson. He’s been making specialty sausages and cutting up quality meat ever since. Charlie has meat packs available that save a customer 10 percent on the cost. He asks to have a week to put them together, however. He does admit that he’s had to raise his prices over the years, but he’ll never compromise on quality. Probably why he’s won the Best of the Rim for as many years as the awards have been given out.

The executive director of Powell Place (806 W. Awinda said she believes Powell Place won the Best of the Rim because the staff feels like family, the facilities feel like home and the residents have a suite of social activities to keep them energized. “We definitely have socialization,” said Awinda. “We have lots of activities — a lot of things happening. We do have a lot more cultural events.”

Founded in 1980, the facility has 150 employees to care for the 90 residents. Erica Overton, MDS Nurse for Payson Care Center said the organization has won the award for the last six years, because of the way they treat patients. “We provide quality care to residents,” she said. “We’re like a family.” Families often bring pictures or stuffed animals to make the space feel as much like home as possible.

Bob Lee & Sons Tree Service

Estimator Scott McRae said Bob Lee & Sons does the best job in Rim Country of trimming and Firewising. “We go the extra mile and make it look good,” he said. “We’re a full service tree company. We can take care of it.” He said the toughest job he has been on in Rim Country had to do with a 110-foot cottonwood tree that had to be removed. “It was dead and had to go,” he said. “We had crane removal and a bucket truck on the job — it was a scary tree.”

Art Gallery

Winner: Down the Street Art Gallery

Winner: Miller Auto Works

Winner: Chase Bank

Down the Street Art Gallery had won its category for five years in a row, which manager Minette Richardson attributes to “good art, treating our customers right and just hanging in there. Not giving up.” The co-op gallery features roughly 20 artists, built on a core of eight long-timers, with others who come and go. The gallery makes between 75 and 100 sales a month, with half of the customers from out of town. The artists come mostly from Rim Country, with some from elsewhere in the region. The gallery also supports the community, hosting many events for nonprofit groups. Also attending the ceremonies and getting into the photo of the five-time, award-winning gallery were Donn Morris, Minette Richardson, April Bower and Jan Ransom. Richardson has lived in Rim Country for 30 years, after living in many other places. She and the 20 employees go by the motto: “Think out of the box.”

Miller Auto Works, located at 600 W. Main St. Suite 1A, is the fulfilled dream of Steve Miller, who has lived in Payson for 19 years and started his business in 2008. He fled Anchorage for the mild Payson climate and now has four employees. His business serves about 350 customers a month and adheres to the motto: “We Do It Right.” Miller Auto Works has never won a Best of the Rim award before, but owner Steve Miller said it all comes down to staff and customer service. “We work with a very good crew,” he said. “They are all very intelligent people.” A wall in his shop filled with letters attests to how happy his crew makes customers. “They are all a source of pride,” said Miller. “I think if you take care of your customers, they will be happy.”

Runners-up:

Branch Manager Andrew Strader brought along Brent Whetstone, Andrew Strader, Glen Miller and Dave Milster to the awards ceremony, some of the 12 people who work at the bank and serve 14,000 to 16,000 customers a month. Chase Bank has won the Best of the Rim for the last six years. That doesn’t surprise Strader. “I think we have a great group — an amazing team,” said Strader. “Because of that amazing team and a great product, we provide great customer service.” He said his team recently went above and beyond to help a customer who had lost their money after just moving to town. “It was a really sticky situation,” said Strader, “but because she had personal contact with a banker— we got it resolved.” He has worked for Chase Bank since 2006. He came up from Phoenix to Payson four years ago to manage the Payson branch.

Maggie Vela at Shear Oasis Salon (806 N. Beeline Highway #C) won the award this year. She serves about 50 customers a month. Her motto: Always aim for the moon if you miss you land among the stars. Vela believes it’s her down-to-earth attitude that won her the Best of the Rim award. “I’m very much myself,” she said. “I make people feel comfortable.” The Payson native does everything including makeup and nails, but loves to color hair.

Owner and founder Daniel Taft Sr. started Computer Guys (300 E. Highway 260) in 2004 and now has 12 employees. He fled the Valley heat for Payson 10 years go. This year marks the sixth year Taft has won the Best of the Rim award. He only has praise for his customers for the honor. “I would like to say, truly, thank you,” he said. “We try to do the best service — we try really hard.” Taft said he looks forward to opening a new superstore soon to expand what he can do for customers. “We’re going to do TV, cellphones and home entertainment,” said Taft. That means a customer can walk in and the Computer Guys will outfit them from a computer with a service contract, to a cellphone and service, a TV speaker system and the know-how to make it all work. “(We’ll do) all their technology needs,” said Taft.

Walmart

Walmart won in two categories — Best Department Store and Best Electronics Store. Manager Laura Ouellette transferred to the Payson store from the Valley — and confessed to a touch of “culture shock.” She noted that the small community makes for far more community involvement. “The customers and the associates all know each other,” she said. “In Phoenix, you’re just a number. I believe up here, we have to have higher expectations and higher hurdles — because it is such a small, tight-knit community.” On the other hand, she gets to know many of her customers here — a big change from the Valley. Native Grill & Wings won in two categories — Best Wings and Best Happy Hour. Robert and Jacquie Marshall survived the inevitable struggles of a first-year business when they opened in August of 2014. This year, they’re reaping the benefits. “The first year is always hard — but it’s been a really good second year.” Robert noted. “I was in semi-conductors,” said Robert, “but I love my wife. Dan Dillon, Russ Youngcourt, Jeff Carlson, Monique Blizzard, Eli Lee, Marcella Wesley, Martin Saldeen, Devon Wells and Caistin Jones showed up to collect the award for the sixth year in a row. Safeway assistant manager Russ Youngcourt said putting customers first makes all the difference. Stop by on a weekend during the warmer months and one group or another will be out front raising money for the schools or veterans or other groups in town. At many of the fund-raising activities, Safeway donates food items.

PetSmart (400 E. Hwy. 260) employees Asia Bishop and Lacey Sockrider came to collect the award. The motto of the store’s nine employees is: “Where Pets Inspire Us.” Asia and Lacey had more stories about their grooming exploits than about customers’ satisfaction buying food. “It can be really challenging,” said Bishop. She told one story of a dog whose owner said her dog had his last grooming session interrupted because of acting aggressively. “He did start getting aggressive, but you have to not get afraid of it — show them who’s boss,” said Bishop.

Krissy Ziemann, Peggy and Stacey are among the six employees of the Bashas’ bakery. Bakery manager Krissy Ziemann said her store wins the Best of Payson every year. She has an idea why. “It’s the doughnuts,” said Ziemann. “We sell the most doughnuts.” Not only does the Payson Bashas’ win the local award, but statewide, Bashas’ bakeries are in the top 10 in Arizona. That could be because of the ganache cakes.

Founded in 2002 and with 19 employees, the restaurant has 8,200 customers a month. She said she has a baker who not only puts together the biscuits but also cinnamon rolls, and pies. Despite her location at the airport, which tends to attract pilots and motorcycle groups, she said 90 percent of her business is local. Recently, however, a group of 25 motorcycles came from Mesa on their drive around the Rim Country. “It’s a great destination,” she said. “We’re a central destination for fly-ins or a day trip out.”

Scoops

When you walk into Scoops Ice Cream and Espresso, 201 W. Main Street, you are almost always greeted by a friendly teen employee. Owner Chris Higgins said that is not by accident. Following the model of Pizza Factory, which also hires teens, Higgins said he likes to hire high school students. Most of the teens Higgins hires stay on with the ice cream shop through high school. Pictured: Chris and Maria Higgins, Grayson Barr, Brando Gonzolaz.

Runners-up: Starbucks (Safeway) Coffee Korner (in the casino)

Mike McCannon bought the Buffalo Bar & Grill on a whim in 2005. He saw an ad for the sale of the bar and had just recently driven through the town. Two weeks later, he bought the bar and hasn’t looked back. McCannon has worked in the restaurant industry all of his working career and says Payson is one of the most unique spots. He employees a staff of 30 and the bar hosts bands every week. Junction 87 has played at the Buffalo just about every Sunday for the past 13 years. There are 12 beers on tap and plenty of food items, including bison burgers, sirloin steak melts and daily $5.95 lunch specials.

Runners-up: Native Grill & Wings Apache Spirits Lounge (in the casino)
