ATV RIDES EXPLORE THREE ROUTES
BY TERESA MCQUERREY RIM REVIEW EDITOR
Three different routes will be explored in the Payson Mountain High Games ATV Trail Ride events this weekend. The rides on Friday and Saturday will include Ultra Terrain Vehicles as well as quads, but the ride Sunday is restricted to quads only. Registration is limited to 50 riders, but there are slots still open and entries will be taken the day of the event. Friday’s ATV Trail Ride is from 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. and covers 16 miles and Snowstorm Mountain. The trail leaves from the Payson Event Center. Along the way, riders will encounter gorgeous views of the Mazatzal Mountain Range as the sun sets. While it is shorter, due to being an evening ride, the trail is surrounded by two mountain ranges. If timed right, participants can pause for the sunset about halfway through, perched on a large rock face overlooking the East Verde River. Entertaining during the sunset stop will be Payson historian Jinx CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

Pyle, sharing stories about the region and singing some old ballads. The ride will take participants past one of the area’s old mines. Bring a camera, binoculars and a flashlight. There are a few rocky portions on the trail, with a few steep inclines, but for the most part the trail has a “Beginner” rating. Saturday’s ride — the Table Mountain Ride/Poker Run — starts at 8 a.m. at the Payson Event Center and is 32 miles long and has an “Intermediate” rating. This will be a fun ride for the “kid at heart,” according to information from the Payson Parks, Recreation and
Tourism Department. It will take participants up close to the Mazatzal Mountain Range, with some of the most beautiful panoramic views in the area. One of the defining features is a large mountain that is flat and resembles a table top, hence the name of the ride, Table Mountain. The area is full of old mines and twisting turns. There is also a hill, affectionately named by locals as the “Rocky Bitch” awaiting riders. At several stops along the route, participants will be given a playing card. Event sponsor Walmart will award a television to the rider who collects cards creating the best poker hand by the end of the ride. Sunday’s ride begins at 7 a.m. and
requires participants to trailer their quads to the trailhead, which is approximately three miles from the Payson Event Center. The Royal Flush Mountain Ride is for quads only and is 22 miles with an “Intermediate” rating due to some rocky areas that would not be suitable for small children or unskilled riders. The country the trail traverses is full of rich history and is where one of the bloodiest feuds in Arizona history transpired. The Rim Country feud — also known as the Pleasant Valley War — was between the sheepherding Tewksburys and the cattle ranching Grahams. Over about a five-year period there was more blood spilled between these two families
than in any other feud in the western U.S. The country is also rugged and beautiful, so rugged in fact, it is known as the Hellsgate Wilderness. Again, riders will have an opportunity to see old mining sites and the Hole in the Ground Canyon, as well as hear stories about the area. The fee to participate in the full event is $60 per person and includes the Friday night barbecue and all three rides, an official T-shirt, money-saving coupons. The fee for non-riders is $35, which includes the barbecue and a Tshirt; $25 for Saturday and Sunday; for weekend-only participants the fee is $50 per person for the Saturday and Sunday rides and a T-shirt.
ATV Rodeo will showcase skills and let riders have some unique fun Expect skills to be showcased and riders having fun at the Mountain High Games ATV Rodeo, which will take place at 5 p.m., Saturday, June 4 in the Payson Event Center. The contests are limited to 20 participants each, if more register, slack contests will begin at noon, Saturday. The events are: Pole Bending, Barrel Racing, ATV Bowling, Grocery Race,
Hide Race, Quad Relay Race, Obstacle Course, Hotshot Competition. All participants must provide their own ATV; all riders are required to wear a helmet, long pants, long sleeves and goggles. All ATVs must be equipped with a spark arrester. No shorts of open-toed shoes will be allowed in the arena. If a contestant is 16 or younger, they
must present ATV certification. Those 17 and older must have a valid driver’s license. The cost to participate is $5 per event or $3 if the contestant enters all events in the ATV Rodeo. Registration will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, June 3 and from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., Saturday, June 4. The fees must be paid prior to participation.
Participants under the age of 18 must be registered by their parent or guardian, and waivers regarding acknowledgement and assumption of risk, release of liability and authorization for emergency medical treatment must be signed by all adult participants and the parent or guardian of those who are under 18.

Check those tires and the treads on your running shoes. Limber up that tossing arm and do some accuracy exercises. The Payson Mountain High Games has contests waiting for you this weekend. The novice division starts at 8 a.m., with the participants in the female division starting one minute later, and the advanced division following. The race is a short course format. Registration is at 9 a.m. at the Payson Event Center, with the run starting at 10 a.m. The first five finishers in the male and female divisions of the 5k Trail Run will be awarded prizes. The Arizona State Horseshoe Pitchers Association presents the Horseshoe Tournament. Check-in is at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 4 at the Payson Event Center, with the contest starting at noon. 2011 MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES One of the most entertaining events at the annuals Loggers Sawdust Festival is the cigar smoking fire fighting contest, where the winning team is the last one standing with cigars still smoking. However, with the return of the burling or log rolling contest, the cigar smoking fire fighters might get a run for their money for most entertaining event. In either case, there will be a lot of wet contestants.

LOGGERS SAWDUST FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 21 YEARS AT PAYSON MOUNTAIN HIGH GAMES BY TERESA MCQUERREY RIM REVIEW EDITOR
Payson’s Loggers Sawdust Festival is celebrating its 21st anniversary at the Payson Mountain High Games June 3 through June 5. When the sawdust settles at noon Sunday, June 5 the Logger of the Year for 2011 will be named. And new this year, there will also be an Arizona Logger of the Year crowned. The contests get going at 3 p.m., Saturday, June 4 and continue into the evening, then resume at 9 a.m., Sunday, June 5. Organizers, led again by Bill Neal, sawdust festival committee chairman, promise a first-class logging competition. The festival includes individual events for children plus contests for both individual and teams of women, as well as co-ed events and competition for individual and teams of men and there are even a few events in which entire families can compete. Children’s events include a treasure hunt in a sawdust pile in which children, under 12, at no charge, look for coins; a pine cone throw and log stacking contest, each with an entry fee of $1; a nail driving contest for both boys and girls, ages 12 to 14, for a fee of $5 per child — the contestant tries to drive as many nails as possible into a stump in the allotted time; a rolling pin throw for girls 12 to 17 for a $5 fee — competition is for
both accuracy and distance; and log toss for boys 12 to 17 for $5 per entry — again the contest is for accuracy and distance. Family events for those 18 and older are the greased pole climb, in which a team tries to get to the top of the pole the fastest, and the very popular and entertaining cigar smoking fire fighting, where the winning team is the last one standing with cigars still smoking. Both of these require a $5 entry fee. Women’s individual and team events are: • Jill and Jill bucking contest, requiring two women to do the bucking of a 12- to 16-foot log with an unmodified crosscut saw; • Cutting and stacking, in which the contestant will slice two-inch rounds off a secured, upright pole and keep the rounds stacked on the chain saw bar; • Power saw bucking, the contest is the same as cutting and stacking, but the log pole will be horizontal; • Rolling pin throw, as with the girls’ event, the contest is for distance and accuracy; • Women’s medley, which requires the contestant to power buck one cut, turn off their saw and then, for speed, walk/run the length of a log without slipping off; set choker on the log at the completion of their walk/run; and then throw an ax at a target so that it sticks; • Ax throw, the contestant will throw a 2-1/2 pound ax 20 feet three times • Burling, which requires the contestants to stand on a
log in a pool of water, two competitors at a time, and roll the log until one falls off. Men’s individual and team events include: • Jack and Jack bucking contest, requiring two men to do the bucking of a 12- to 16-foot log with an unmodified crosscut saw; • Cutting and stacking, in which the contestant will slice two-inch rounds off a secured, upright pole and keep the rounds stacked on the chain saw bar; • Power saw bucking, the contest is the same as cutting and stacking, but the log pole will be horizontal; • Men’s medley, which requires the contestant to power buck one cut, turn off their saw and then, for speed, walk/run the length of a log without slipping off; set choker on the log at the completion of their walk/run; and then throw an ax at a target so that it sticks; • Ax throw, the contestant will throw a 2-1/2 pound ax 30 feet three times; • Horizontal log-chopping, using an ax, the contestant must knock pieces free from an upright 10- to 12-inch log; • Burling, which requires the contestants to stand on a log in a pool of water, two competitors at a time, and roll the log until one falls off — the winner is the last one standing upright on the log. There is also a contest for specialized-unlimited power saw bucking.

The games are Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5, with the Dutch Oven Cook-Off slated to start heating up at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 4. Cooking begins at 10 a.m., with judging starting at 1 p.m., and tasting by games guests following. The Cook-Off is sponsored by the Town of Payson and the Arizona Chapter of the International Dutch Oven Society, so entrants must be members of the IDOS. The event is a three-pot contest and the winner will be eligible to enter the World Championship Cook-Off 2011 in Utah. The three pots that entrants must prepare are a main dish, a dessert and a bread, which can be yeast rise or sourdough. All dishes must be prepared with only charcoal. The judges will award points for presentation, cleanliness and taste. Cooks as young as 12, if IDOS members, may partic-
ipate. However, a limit of 12 teams will be allowed in the contest, but the teams may have up to three members each. The dessert must be ready for judging by 1 p.m.; bread by 2 p.m.; and main dish by 3 p.m. Cooking will be done over a charcoal fire up off the ground, and ingredients must be prepared from scratch on site, including cutting of meat, vegetables, other ingredients and marinating.
