Whether your pet is a baby, adolescent, adult or senior, time spent with it is time that adds joy to your life and their life as well. Take the time to do the right thing with your four-legged friend.
Our lives would be less without pets BY TERESA MCQUERREY
Welcome to this special edition of The Rim Review celebrating our pets. For the biggest part of my life, there have been pets sharing it. I don’t recall the dog personally, but I have seen pictures and heard stories of my first pet — a boxer named Leo. Apparently he was a great protector. One of my father’s many uncles came for a visit, but he was a stranger to Leo. When this uncle tried to get a closer look at me, the dog wouldn’t let him anywhere near. The dog I have now has some of Leo’s big heart in her. We were out walking and a neighbor’s pit bull was loose and charged us. My cocker spaniel, Jolly, turned so ferocious, she broke free from her leash and charged right back at the pit bull, which was about four times her size, causing it to turn tail and run back to the safety of its own yard. The first pet I remember is a beagle puppy. It probably really wasn’t a pet — at the time, my father kept a whole pack of hunting dogs of various breeds. But he brought this particular puppy into the house and we made a doghouse for it out of a big, cardboard box. That’s the only thing I remember about that pup, except that it was very cute. There were other dogs, a few cats, some birds and a horse that belonged to my younger sisters, two tanks of exotic fish, and some chickens and ducks and rabbits that
my father bought to be my 4-H project when I was 9, but he never let me have anything to do with. My sisters and I were rarely the instigators for the acquisition of pets when we were growing up. They were all our father’s idea, probably stemming from the fact that he had only one dog when he was a boy — or so the story goes — though his father did raise homing pigeons. And generally, it was never just one of anything. There were poodles, two I recall: Gidget and Rocky; there were at least 17 Great Danes: Geronimo (my eighthgrade graduation present), Cochise, Princess and her 13 puppies delivered all over the forest one summer while my father was living in a cabin by Lake Mary going to summer school at Northern Arizona University) and Hostein; and three wire-haired fox terriers: Ginger, Taco and TNT. There was a Samoyed named Mike; a muddy-gray hound named Molly and her companion who was such a champion tailwagger he would leave bruises if he caught your bare legs; a Doberman pinscher named Sasha, who was so timid she was ruled by a Chihuahua mix named Peanut, who actually ruled over the whole family, our mother included. There were a few family felines in my past as well: a solid black cat I called Candy (for licorice) and a Siamese named Sharon. There was a Persian my father bought for
my sister. That cat — Mama Kitty — was a real trooper, traveling with us from the Navajo Reservation to the Oregon coast and back to Payson. There were three of Mama Kitty’s offspring that we kept — Felix, Oscar and Bruce. My youngest sister also brought home a yellow and white kitten which she named Bandit. He liked to sleep in the bathroom sink and drink water from a running tap. As adults, my sisters and I acquired quite a few more pets. I have had five cats (three still with me) and a cocker spaniel. My youngest sister has had three dogs adopted from the humane society, and a poodle that came from a puppy mill. The sister just younger than me has had three cats — all adopted from the humane society. My middle sister has had birds and cared for neighborhood cats. Together, my sisters also adopted two, beautiful large dogs who were orphaned when a co-worker died. So, our current pet families include three cats and a dog at my house, and four dogs and two cats at my sisters’ house. They are our babies and our lives would be something less without them. If you have room in your heart and home for one or more pets, visit the Humane Society of Central Arizona animal shelter at 812 S. McLane Road. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.

Is heart disease slowing your dog down? BY DR. NICOLE SAVAGE PINE COUNTRY ANIMAL CLINIC
Did you know that 3.2 million dogs seen every year by their veterinarian have evidence of heart disease? That’s 30 percent of dogs over the age of 10 and it’s the fourth most common cause of death in our canine companions. There are two common causes of heart disease in dogs — one that affects the heart valves and another that affects the ability of the heart muscle to pump. Both forms will likely lead to heart failure. Heart failure occurs when the weakened heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Older, small breed dogs like chihuahuas, miniature pinschers, Boston terriers, poodles and Pomeranians are at increased risks to develop the most common cause of heart failure which is leaky heart valves. The second cause of heart failure is weak heart muscle contractions. The walls of the heart become thin and are stretched out of shape. This heart disease is more common in medium to large breed dogs like boxers, Great Danes, Doberman pinschers, Dalmatians, St. Bernards and cocker spaniels. Signs of heart failure can be subtle at first and mistakenly associated with aging. Symptoms include: coughing, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, poor appetite, fainting, a swollen abdomen, restlessness, and getting tired easily. A complete, annual physical examination by your veterinarian will provide clues as to whether your dog has any heart-related problems. If your veterinarian hears a heart murmur, they may recommend further tests like Xrays of your dog’s chest. Great strides have been made recently in the treatment of canine heart disease. Dogs diagnosed with the heart failure should begin medications as soon as possible.

Although no medication can cure heart disease, they can greatly improve your dog’s quality of life and significantly lengthen their lives as well. If your dog is over the age of 7, a breed prone to heart
disease, or if you have noticed any of the signs mentioned above, please talk to your veterinarian about heart disease. With your help, your dog can lead a happier, healthier, and longer life.

Beyond forgiving BY KAT KNAUFF HUMANE SOCIETY OF CENTRAL ARIZONA
Many animals that enter shelter doors have experienced more than most people can imagine. Some animals have been neglected, while others have lost an owner to illness or home foreclosure. Have you ever wondered what your adopted pet’s life was like prior to adoption? Many animals come in as “strays,” while others come with a bit of background information. Either way, your adopted family member has experienced a great deal in his or her previous life. Like many animal welfare workers, I have seen animals come from some “not too pleasant situations,” who go on to become amazing family pets. It’s absolutely amazing how forgiving animals can be. I have witnessed dogs previously used for dog-fighting or neglected beyond belief, transition into excellent pets after being adopted from a rescue organization. Animals seem to bounce back and forgive humanity for what has happened in the past, and I find this absolutely miraculous. One dog that truly stands out to me is a dog named Montana. She came into HSCAZ absolutely petrified, and when I say petrified, I mean scared to death. She was brought into the shelter after being found wandering the streets of Central Arizona. She never showed any signs of aggression, but she did sit in the back of her cage shaking beyond belief. She feared humans to an extent that I rarely have seen in the past, and she shook like a leaf when anyone approached her cage. The staff and volunteers at HSCAZ wanted Montana to feel at home and to make her more comfortable in the shelter environment. After analyzing methods of behavior modification, it was decided that after she was spayed and fully vaccinated, she was bound to make some canine friends. Now that Montana has a group of furry friends (we call them the “teenager” group), she is an outgoing puppy, and will approach humans in a heartbeat. Her canine friends have showed her that humans can be compassionate, and that they also give great belly-rubs and attention. Montana will now run up to the fence when she sees people walking by.

Montana came to the HSCAZ animal shelter as a terrified stray who shook like a leaf whenever she was approached by humans. With some patience and a little help from her canine friends, she has learned to trust people and is ready to find a new family.
Yes, she still wants to be with her friends throughout the day, and she likes to cuddle up to them at night, but now she knows she can trust humans as well. Who would have known that a scared little hound would make such a dramatic turnaround in this short period of time! Montana is currently up for adoption at HSCAZ, and she told me this morning that it’s time for her to venture off and meet a new family. She loves her stuffed animals, and boy does she like to cuddle up with her blanket at night. She likes soft voices
and playtime, and I heard through the shelter grapevine that she dreams of going camping with her new family. Could Montana be the new family member that you have been looking for? HSCAZ highly recommends coming in to visit Montana, and you never know… Montana may be the one for you. If you are interested in adopting Montana or any other HSCAZ animals, please contact kat.knauff@ humanesocietycentralaz.org, call us at (928) 474-5590 or stop by the shelter at 812 S. McLane Road.

Rim Country Friends of Ferals, formerly known as Payson Friends of Ferals, has been humanely reducing the numbers of feral cats in our community since 2005 with the proven successful TNR program (trap, neuter, return). This program works with caregivers who are caring for the cats in their neighborhood by feeding and offering shelter. RCFF offers low-cost or no-cost spay and neuter services to caregivers. We have traps available and, depending on the circumstances, we will do the trapping or we will loan out the traps so the caregiver can traps the cats in their colony and have them spayed or neutered. Since the start of this program, we have TNR’d roughly 2,500 cats which has dramatically reduced the numbers of these beautiful, elusive creatures in our Rim Country communities. For the last six years, we have operated under the umbrella of the Humane Society of Central Arizona. We are now in the process of acquiring our own 501-c3 status, and have hopes of being our own free-standing organization by early this fall. Some of the benefits of this will include a no-kill status which helps to attract grants, the ability to organize and carry out our own fund-raising activities, and the ability to do our own public relations and publicity with our own voice, just to name a few. Rim Country Friends of Ferals depends on donations, fund-raisers and grants to fund this vital program. If you would like to donate or if you have questions about how we can help you with spaying or neutering cats you or someone you know are caring for, please call (928) 474-1836.

Holistic therapies for pets and people TIMOTHY PATTERSON, DVM, CVA, VCP HOLISTIC VETERINARY SERVICES
Spascupreel is used for muscular cramps and Lymphomyosot for lymphatic drainage. In Biopuncture, small doses of products are injected in order to stimulate the natural healing processes. These micro doses “wake up” mechanisms which are available anyway. So, the healing effect comes from “inside” your body, not from the products themselves. It’s the reaction of your immune system which will produce the proper reactions to regain natural healing. The reaction of the body may vary from better local blood circulation to relaxation of muscles or a local detoxification of tissues.
Jen Hsou Lin once said “It does not matter whether medicine be old or new, so long as it brings about a cure. It matters not whether theories be eastern or western, so long as they prove to be true.” This is the principle that our practice is founded on and why we strive daily to provide the best holistic medicine possible. Some of the services that we provide for area residents and their pets are described in this article. See our ad on the back page for more information.
HOLISTIC MEDICINE
BIOFEEDBACK STRESS REDUCTION THERAPY
The goal is to achieve maximum wellbeing, where everything is functioning at its best. Holistic medicine attempts to address disease through a series of analytic observations. When treating, the goal of the holistic practitioner is to find the root cause of the pathology. Even the most basic illness may have several layers of causation. Only when the true source of the ailment has been found is there the possibility for a long-term recovery. After discovering the foundation of the illness the holistic practitioner prescribes the most effective, least invasive, least expensive, and least harmful treatment for the patient. In more extreme situations, surgery and drug therapy from conventional medicine may be integrated with alternative techniques to provide a complementary whole.
ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points on the body which have the ability to alter various biochemical and physiological conditions in order to achieve a healing effect. It is not a cure-all, but it works well where indicated and when used alone or in combination with traditional medicine. Acupuncture has been used for nearly 4,000 years in China. In North America, it has been used for decades, in both people and domestic animals. Acupuncture is one of a variety of therapies we may use to treat you or your pet.
ACCESS CHIROPRACTIC The human nervous system detects far more stimuli than an individual is aware of. Most health practitioners occasionally experience moments when they are able to sense things that cannot be perceived through their “standard” five senses. A relatively small percentage of gifted individuals learn how to cultivate this expanded awareness sensing skill so they can access it at any time. During palpation, a practitioner’s nervous system detects a mixture of conscious stimuli and ‘ultra-weak’ (nonconscious) stimuli. The nervous system responds differently to each type of stimulus. When the nervous system detects ‘standard’ stimuli, it responds by producing conscious sensations. By comparison, when the nervous system detects ultra-weak stimuli it responds by producing select autonomic and central nervous system responses, which the practitioner is normally not aware of. The Access Practitioner learns how to rapidly enhance awareness ‘ultra-weak’ changes in a patient’s physiology. Enhanced awareness skills enable a practitioner to significantly increase the specificity of assessment and

corrective procedures.
LASER THERAPY Laser therapy aims to bio-stimulate injured and dysfunctional tissues. Clinical studies and trials of laser therapy technology indicate that it has beneficial effects on tissues and cells. Some of these effects include: accelerated tissue repair and cell growth, faster wound healing, reduced fibrous tissue formation, anti-inflammation, anti-pain, improved vascular activity, increased metabolic activity, improved nerve function, and immunoregulation. As a result of these beneficial effects on tissues and cells, laser therapy is a viable option for many conditions. High power laser therapy (HPLT) is dramatically improving the treatment of many conditions previously refractive to traditional care. Using the high power laser therapy device, we are now able to offer our patients a safe, painless, and non-surgical treatment procedure for even the toughest musculoskeletal, orthopedic and neurological maladies.
HOMOTOXICOLOGY Homotoxicology is an approach to healing that integrates the treatment principles
of homeopathy with the diagnostic approach of allopathic medicine. Developed over fifty years ago in Germany, homotoxicology is becoming more widely practiced in the United States. Practitioners trained in homotoxicology offer homeopathic remedies for a variety of health concerns. The goal of treatment in homotoxicology is to detoxify the body and restore the body’s natural biorhythms. For those with health challenges, homotoxicology maintains that health cannot be achieved without ridding the body of toxins. Homotoxicology involves using homeopathic remedies to facilitate the removal of toxins and stimulate the body’s capacity to heal itself. The practice of homotoxicology incorporates the philosophy that each human being possesses an innate self-healing mechanism that can prevent and treat illness.
BIOPUNCTURE Biopuncture is a therapy whereby specific locations are injected with biological products. Most of these injections of natural products are given under the skin or into the muscles. Traumeel, for example, is used for inflammations and sports injuries,
Over 30 years of research and clinical experience have led to the development of the technology behind the Nano SRT Immune Enhancement System. It was designed to help balance the immune system and its unique relationship to the nervous system by re-training the way the body reacts to the physical and energetic world around us. It uses a combination of resonance frequencies, biofeedback, acupuncture points and homeopathy to assist the body so that energetic stress produces minimal symptoms. A healthy immune system is absolutely vital as it deals with millions each and every day; some good and some bad, our immune system has to determine which substances are harmless, and which ones pose a threat. However, if your immune system is not functioning correctly, it may attack your own body as if it were the enemy, resulting in a number of symptoms that can lead to illness. Overexposure to too many stressors can lead to allergies and sensitivities, lack of energy, lack of focus, sleeplessness, sinus conditions, and digestive issues, just to name a few. The American Medical Association tells us that 80-85 percent of all human illness and disease is a result of stress. Emotional, psychological and physical stressors, and even spiritual stressors can greatly aggravate symptoms according to many medical research studies.
PULSED ELECTRO-MAGNETIC FIELD THERAPY This technology has shown amazing results in animals. PEMF has been FDA cleared and widely used in the treatment of human delayed bone fractures for over two decades, and there is a growing body of literature concerning the biological and clinical effects of this energy. PEMF has been used in Europe for over 20 years in over 400,000 sessions with individuals experiencing migraines, sports injuries and other pain syndromes including: Back and joint problems, Edema and swelling, Lack of circulation, Skin wound healing, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Arthritis. PEMF therapy regenerates damaged and diseased tissue, repairs torn tendons and fractured bones; enhances the synthesis of protein in the cells, allowing the body to take advantage of all the protein available; improves circulation by opening and dilating the arteries and capillaries: and is particularly effective in getting to deep muscle soreness because of its deep penetration.

Expert health tips for loving dog parents How Americans view the family pet has evolved over the years. Today, people are not content to merely be pet owners; instead they consider themselves to be “pet parents.” The joy and unconditional love that pets bring have catapulted them into the realm of true family member and people are willing to do whatever it takes to provide their pets with the best. A recent survey revealed that a whopping 81 percent of Americans consider their dogs to be equal members of the family and 77 percent talk to their pups as if they are a human family member. It is clear that the role of dog parent is constantly shifting, with each generation allowing dogs to play a larger and more prominent role in family life. Wendy Diamond, a well-known pet expert and animal rescue advocate, agrees. Here she provides some insider tips about how to give the best-quality care to canine family members: 1. Plant with care — Warm weather months call us outdoors to plant landscaping. The yard or patio is also where pet parents spend a lot of time with their pup enjoying nice weather. When planting, it is important to take care to avoid plants that are toxic for dogs. Common plants that are poisonous if ingested by a dog include the following: a variety of lilies, aloe, buckwheat, daffodil, dahlia, hydrangea and some ferns. Also, avoid using cocoa mulch because the cacao bean shells contain theobromine, which is very dangerous if consumed by dogs and other pets. 2. Clean green — Pet parents love their pets, but it’s likely that most four-legged friends don’t have a place set-
ting at the dinner table. Because dogs spend a lot of time on the floor both eating and relaxing, it’s beneficial to take precautions by using nontoxic cleaners. The green cleaning movement is growing and it’s probable that pet parents can find many great options at local retail stores. Looking at the labels is key; many will note if they are nontoxic for pets. Another option is homemade cleaners from common household ingredients like baking soda, vinegar, salt and lemon juice. 3. “Treat” them well — There are so many treat options for dogs, it’s easy for pet parents to get confused about what is both healthy and tasty. One of the easiest ways to recognize a higher quality treat is to simply look at its

appearance. Look for treats that look wholesome, with no artificial colors, flavors or fillers. Find treats that look like they are made with the same quality and care as we would choose for our own meals. Pups deserve treats that live up to the high standards families set for their own well-being. 4. Bond through exercise — Just like people need exercise, both for their physical and mental health, so do dogs. This could be a great excuse for dog parents and dogs to spend time exercising together. Walking and running with pups has always been popular, but the latest dog exercise trend is to spend time at specialized dog parks, which are available in many communities. Here, leash laws are relaxed and dogs can enjoy some time simply being themselves. This might even spark pet parent friendships and encourage other dog lovers to start meeting for regular doggy play dates. 5. Don’t fear the vet — Regular vet visits are important for maintaining good pet health, but too often these are dreaded by both dogs and their pet parents. Annual visits to the veterinarian provide necessary insight into pets’ health and development. Regular veterinary visits also give parents the opportunity to ask questions and receive expert feedback. From advice on vitamins and medicine, to age-related physical and behavioral concerns, a vet is there to help pet parents make solid choices when it comes to their pets’ well-being. Plus regular visits can help ensure dogs live long lives as active members of the family. From ARA Content

Think about your favorite restaurant. Sure, you probably enjoy the ambiance and service, but it’s really the delicious food that keeps you going back, right? When it comes to attracting birds to your back yard this season, keep in mind the same principle applies for them. They’ll appreciate the water and shelter you provide, but what will really bring them back year after year will be the quality and variety of the food they find in your back yard. Seed and suet are staples, and birds will reward you for serving them by flocking to your outdoor oasis. Keep in mind suet is not just for winter anymore. No-melt formulas make it the perfect protein for warm-weather feeding too. But if you really want to wow birds, serve mealworms. What you may consider utterly icky — mealworms — is like candy to the birds. And not only are mealworms delectable to your feathered friends, they’re an important source of much-needed nutrition during a season that is vital to birds’ survival. Warm months are crucial for backyard birds. Their long migration north can leave them fatigued, stressed and depleted. Then as soon as they arrive in their spring and summer habitat, they must begin the arduous process of finding a mate, staking out their territory, building a nest and raising their young — all while hunting for food. And they have just a few short months to raise their young before it’s time to migrate again in anticipation of cold weather. Before your feathered friends show up, make sure all feeders, baths and houses are in good repair and clean. A quick rinsing with bleach, warm water and detergent gets rid of dirt, grime and mold. Then, think about the menu. If you already serve a seed brand that’s natural, not washed

C.C. — A ‘working dog’ with wow C.C. lives in Payson and is the greeter for Mattress Experts — so she is a working dog, but with a lot of wow going for her. C.C. is an 8-year-old female Pomeranian, born July 18, 2003 into a litter of two females. She was the runt of the two. Her mother was also small for the breed, but her father was a normal size, show-quality Pomeranian. Obviously, C.C. inherited her small size from her mother and her beauty from her father. She loves people and has a huge following of friends in Payson and receives visitors daily. To know C.C. is to love her. Anyone having already met her would agree what a sweet and wonderful dog she is. She loves going to work and meeting new people every day. She especially enjoys visits from her loyal friends here. She was attacked and bitten by a large dog last year. She now shows a fear of some dogs. If you have not already met her, we welcome you to come by and see her. She will be awaiting you at the front door of Mattress Experts. According to the American Kennel Club the Pomeranian is a cocky, animated companion with an extroverted personality. A compact little dog, it is an active toy breed with an alert character and fox-like expression. Today, the Pomeranian is a popular companion dog and competitive show dog. They can come in all colors, patterns, and variations although orange and red are the most popular.
HISTORY The breed’s name originally came from the historical region of Pomerania (now present day Germany and Poland), according to the AKC. Originally weighing nearly 30 pounds, the dog served as an able herder of sheep in its larger form. They were not
well known until 1870, when the Kennel Club (England) recognized the so-called Spitz dog. In 1888, Queen Victoria fell in love with a Pomeranian in Florence, Italy, and brought the specimen back to England, influencing its popularity dramatically. Pomeranians are very intelligent dogs that love to

please. Because of their outgoing temperaments, they can be very good family dogs with the right training. Due to their small size they don’t require much exercise, but are an energetic breed that needs attention from their people frequently. born nestlings. However, it can be much harder for humans to see the appeal; after all, we don’t usually seek out the company of grubs and larvae. And handling live mealworms is probably not a welcomed bird-feeding experience even for the most committed bird enthusiasts. In the past, it was difficult for bird fans to provide a supply of mealworms for their feathered friends. But freeze-dried varieties have made it easy to serve this nutritious, muchloved treat year-round. Freeze-dried mealworms provide all the nutritional benefits of fresh ones and are easy to store and serve. It’s also a great way to serve birds something they love without having to endure the “ick factor” of live mealworms. A variety of feeders are specifically made for serving mealworms, or you can blend with your seed mixes and add to any feeder. Either way, the birds will benefit from the nutritional value of these high protein-packed treats and you’ll satisfy their craving, keeping them coming back for more. With a little preparation and the right blend of food, water and shelter, you can fill your back yard with the bright colors and welcome song of birds all season — and give your feathered friends the help they need to thrive throughout the year. If birds arrive at a well-stocked and well-prepared back yard, they will not only stay for the summer, but probably return From ARA Content the following spring.

Top 10 question for your vet Being a veterinarian is a tough job. After all, veterinarians have to treat patients who can’t explain where it hurts or follow health instructions more complex than “sit” or “stay.” That’s why communication between pet owners and veterinarians is so important. Sharing information about how your pet is behaving — including eating, drinking, sleeping, urinating and/or passing stools — could help make a lifesaving diagnosis. For starters, pet owners need to make sure they have a local veterinarian they can team up with to keep their pets healthy. If you’re looking for a veterinarian, check out www.myveterinarian.com, a new Web site that provides detailed information about veterinary practices across the country. Once you have selected a veterinarian, the American Veterinary Medicine Association (AVMA) suggests this list of the top 10 things you should talk about with your veterinarian during a visit: 10. Ask about parasite prevention and control for heartworms, fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms that’s appropriate for your region of the country. 9. Ask about proper behavior training and socialization. Many shelters report that improper training and socialization — and the behavioral issues that can come
with them — are some of the most common reasons people give up their pets. Your veterinarian can assist in evaluating your animal’s disposition and provide advice and tips on how to appropriately train and socialize your pet. 8. Ask about emergency care. When your pet has acute health issues in the middle of the night, you’ll need to know where to call or go. Ask where you should go when things go wrong, and make sure you figure out how to get there before an emergency — you certainly don’t want to be driving around asking for directions in an emergency situation. 7. Ask about nutrition. What type of food should you feed your pet? What serving size is appropriate? And does their age impact what you should be feeding them? 6. Ask if your pet is overweight and, if it is, how you can get your pet back to a healthy weight. As in humans, weight control for pets is essential for good health. 5. Ask about vaccinations. Vaccinations are essential to your pet’s health and should be tailored to your pet’s lifestyle. A pampered high-rise dweller that never sets foot outside won’t need the same vaccines as a mud hound forever exploring outdoors. 4. If you have a pet older than 7 years of age, ask about senior care. Older pets are more prone to conditions such as arthritis,
Come Celebrate the Blessing of Your Pet The blessing of animals is a part of our church heritage. heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid conditions and other problems. Prevention and early detection of problems are key to helping your pet live a longer, healthier life. 3. Ask about any lumps and bumps your pet has developed. Although many of the lumps and bumps are not problems, some of them are cause for concern. It’s best to have all of them checked out, just to make sure. 2. Ask about any changes you’ve noticed

in your pet’s diet, energy level, water intake, output and behavior. Any of these might be important health clues. 1. Ask about the results of your veterinarian’s physical examination of your pet, including an oral health evaluation. Dental disease is one of the most common health problems that pets experience and it can lead to serious problems. For more information, visit www.avma.org and www.avma.org/myveterinarian. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A more harmonious aspect favors all relationships. Family ties with mates and children are strengthened. Libra is Cupid’s choice to win the amorous Aries’ heart. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The bold Bull is ready to take on fresh challenges. Expect some opposition as you plow new ground — but supporters will outnumber detractors. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) An upcoming job change could mean uprooting your family to a far-distant location. Weigh all considerations carefully before making a decision one way or the other. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A long-standing problem is resolved by a mutually agreed upon compromise. You can now focus on getting the facts you’ll need for a decision you’ll soon be asked to make. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) The Big Cat needs to be wary of what appears to be a golden investment opportunity. That “sure thing” could turn out to be nothing more than a sack of Kitty Glitter. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) You give of yourself generously to help others, but right now you must allow people to help you. Confide your problems to family and trusted friends. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Relationships benefit from a strong harmonious aspect. Things go more smoothly at work. Someone you thought you’d never see again asks for a reconciliation. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) A minor distraction interferes with travel plans, but the delay is temporary. Meanwhile, expect to play peacemaker once again for feuding family members. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Keep that positive momentum going on the home front. Arrange your schedule to spend more time with your family. You’ll soon have news about that job change. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Control that possessive tendency that sometimes goads you into an unnecessary display of jealousy. You could be creating problems where none currently exist. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) A new project holds some challenges you hadn’t expected. But don’t be discouraged; you’ll find you’re more prepared to deal with them than you realized. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Yours is the sign of the celestial Chemist, so don’t be surprised if you experience a pleasant “chemistry” betwixt yourself and that new Leo in your life. BORN THIS WEEK: You enjoy being fussed over, as befits your “royal” Leonine nature. You also have a strong loyalty to family and friends. © 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

The 10 commandments for pet owners 1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful. 2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Do not break my spirit with your temper, though I will always forgive you. Your patience will teach me more effectively. 3. Please have me spayed or neutered. 4. Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for your kindness than mine. Don’t be angry with me for long, and don’t lock me up as punishment. After all, you have your job, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you. 5. Speak to me often. Even if I don’t understand all your words, I understand your voice when it’s speaking to me. Your voice is the sweetest sound I ever hear, as you must know by my enthusiasm whenever I hear your footsteps. 6. Take me inside when it’s cold and wet. I’m a domestic animal and I am no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask for little more than your gentle hands petting me. Keep my bowl filled with clean water. Feed me good food so that I may stay
well, to romp and play and do your bidding. By your side I stand ready, willing and able to share my life with you, for that is what I live for. I’ll never forget how well you’ve treated me. 7. Don’t hit me. Remember, I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite you. 8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I’ve been out in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting old and weak. 9. Take care of me when I get old. For you will grow old, too. 10. When I am very old, or when I no longer enjoy good health, please do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having fun. Just see to it that my trusting life is taken gently. And be with me on that difficult journey when it’s time to say goodbye. Never say, “I can’t bear to watch.” Everything is easier for me when you are there. I will leave this earth knowing with my last breath that my fate was always safest in your hands. I love you.

End-of-life care for our pets Arguably no aspect of pet ownership is more difficult to cope with than end-of-life care. Be it an elderly pet or one recently diagnosed with a terminal disease, pets are a part of the family no one wants to lose. When a pet is nearing the end of its life, owners must make a difficult decision. Caring for a dying pet can be heartbreaking and might even be painful for the pet as well. If the pain a pet is experiencing is simply too much, then veterinarians will likely recommend euthanasia. The ASPCA offers the following tips to pet owners caring for a pet as it approaches the end of its life: • Make the pet as comfortable as possible. Pet owners should make their pet’s comfort a top priority as the pet nears the end of its life. This includes immediately addressing any medical issues that may arise or recur, as well as creating a warm and comfortable environment for the pet. Provide a wellcushioned and warm sleeping spot to avoid the development of pressure sores, which are common in pets with limited mobility. In addition, routinely check in with the pet to see if there is any wetness or soiling. Incontinence is common among older pets or even younger pets facing the end of their life. • Determine quality of life. No pet owner wants to euthanize their pet. However, sometimes an older or sick pet’s quality of life deteriorates so much that euthanasia should be discussed with a veterinarian. Before that discussion, pet owners can look for a handful of indicators to determine a pet’s quality of life. Among the signs that might indicate a poor quality of life are irritability, restlessness, confusion, loss of appetite, excessive water consumption, seeking out unusual sleeping spots, and avoidance of favorite activities. • Look for signs the pet is experiencing
pain. Older or sick pets may or may not experience pain, but pet owners should be on the lookout anyway. When a pet is nearing the end of its life, it won’t necessarily exhibit pain in the same way it has throughout its life. Typically, a healthy pet will whimper or cry when it is in pain. However, a pet approaching the end of its life will not always whimper or cry when it is in pain and might even continue eating and drinking as it normally would.
SIGNS OF PAIN IN YOUR PET When trying to determine if a pet is experiencing pain, look for the following signs: • excessive panting or gasping for breath • reclusiveness • pickiness with food • reluctance to move If the pet has been diagnosed with a specific condition, ask the veterinarian for signs associated with that condition, as different conditions manifest themselves in different ways. Manage any pain in accordance to the veterinarian’s advice. When a disease is diagnosed, a veterinarian will likely give pet owners a plan of action to help the pet. This may include advice on managing pain. A medication may or may not be prescribed, depending on any pre-existing conditions. Whatever the situation, pet owners should stick to the veterinarian’s advice. Going off course could be harmful to the pet, and the goal is make its remaining days as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.
