Rationale

My aim overall for this module was to improve upon my digital based skills whilst reintroducing my analogue skills into the mix, such as adding handmade textures as backgrounds. I also wanted to take as many opportunities given to me work this year, grow in experience working under clients and work towards making a living from it. I still prefer my work to be highly detailed but I am also considering how my more simplified shapes can also create an image. I want to branch out into as many areas of illustration as I can to gain experience and feed my tastes for new ways of creating work under different contexts. What I want to come out of the year with is a strong a varied portfolio that I can show to a range of potential clients Themes / Subjects

Nature- wildlife, anatomy Informative- interesting and educational Fan art- based on existing material but seen from a new angle Fun- entertainment Products / Methods of Distribution

hand bound books posters postcards note boover textile designs wall paper Laser cut wooden products- easy enough to produce, by entering my fine line work into the software I am able to create a great range of wooden editorials mural designs gifs/animations

Practical Skills / Media / Formats

I plan to improve on my digital skills, working on using new brushes to create different and varied effects, learning shortcuts to speed up my time producing work. Improving my basic drawing skills by giving myself more time to produce simple pencil sketches to get a better understanding of how to draw different forms, both natural and man made. In general I want to draw more animals as they tend to feature allot within my work

Brief 1:

Deadline

Thought Bubble

14th November

Rationale:

This a self set brief pushing me to create a range of products to present and sell at the comic convention. This brief also requires me to keep a store for two days. This brief also requires me to manage a table, communicate with customers and take care to take account of the money going through sales. It was also partially a collaborative experience with me sharing a table with a fellow illustration student. The work created at Thought Bubble led on to another collaboration with a textiles student in which we created a pattern design to be entered on the wallpaper distributer feathr. Brief 2:

Deadline

Penguin/Puffin book cover design Rationale:

For this one I took part in creating two book covers to enter I both a Penguin and Puffin cover design competition. This challenged my skills in having to create work for both adults and children. As an addition I also mocked up designs for a point of sale where A Clockwork Orange would be displayed in a book shop. Brief 3:

Film society

Deadline

Ongoing for each screening

Rationale:

A fortnightly task in which I designed a film poster for the latest screenings of the film society. This provided me to work with a varied amount of styles in order to suit the different genres of film. With these posters I was also able to sell them as prints and have one exhibited in a shop. There are currently plans to have an exhibition of them in the college during freshers fayre. Brief 4: Deadline 12th march book Engineering colouring book launch

Rationale:

Collaborative set by the leeds engineering faculty. My role was to design 4 colouring book pages and a front cover. I later then went on to design a wall banner to be used within the book launch as a colouring in wall. The book is now well in to publication with it being sent to schools nationwide.

Brief 5: Final major project

Deadline

20/5/16

Rationale:

Initially to create a concertina book showing the journey of a train from town to countryside. Due to time constraints, the project became a field guide book of birds. Invested time in research into learning about the different types of birds to better inform my illustrations as well as to have written information within the pages. The illustrations I did for the book can also be exhibited as a set. Additional Project Proposals

Plusnet- this brief involved me designing a mural for the Leeds branch of Plusnet. I had to then pitch my idea to a panel of Plusnet employees and though not chosen, I did however make it into the second round. Secret 7- this is an annual brief set up by Secret 7 for illustrators to send in their record cover sleeve to represent a selected 7 songs. I entered 3 designs and managed to have one of them be selected and shown in the gallery in London. Guardian brief- the Guardian was in paternership on Leeds College on helping put a spotlight on the college. The newspaper firm gave the opportunity to select one student’s illustrations to be embedded with 3 articles on their website. I had one of my designs chosen for an article with the other 2 articles going to 2 other students.
