Antoni Gaudi

Casa Battlo Location: Passeig de Gràcia Date: 1906 The original house was designed by Gaudi and built in 1877. When the Battlo family bought the house in 1900 they commissioned Gaudi to create something new and unrivalled after seeing Park Guell. The local name is Casa Del Ossos meaning house of bones. It is Art Nouveau in style but Gaudi’s own individual curvilinear interpretation. The roof is designed to look like a dragons back with the tower representing St George’s lance the patron saint of Catalonia. The design of the building features many organic shapes inspired by nature.

Parc Gßell Location: Carmel Hill Date: 1914 The park contains Gaudi’s multicoloured salamander fountain. The main feature of the park is the terrace inspired by a sea serpent a bench frames this terrace curving in and out, it is covered by multicoloured mosaics and provides social spaces and views over Barcelona. The park also contains Gaudi’s house and museums displaying his work.

Sagrda Famillia Location: Carrer de Mallorca Date: 1882-2026 The Sagrada Familiia is possibly the most iconic building in Barcelona. Gaudi’s most ambitious project mixing his own curvilinear art nouveau with the gothic style. Ornamentation covers every surface externally it is very over the top and flamboyant. The interior differs as the stone is smooth and not rusticated. It is lit up in different colours view the coloured windows above. It is famously still unfinished, with an expected completion date of 2026 to mark 100 years since Gaudi died.

Barcelona Pavilion

Barcelona Pavilion Location: Avenida Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia Date: 1929 (1986) The Barcelona Pavilion was built for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. It was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, it is one of the most important pieces of Modern Architecture. There is a ‘free plan’ floor, with the roof supported by piloti walls can be positioned with out needing to support the roof allowing the use of fully glazed walls and an open floor plan. The barcelona chair was also designed for the pavilion.

Along the Seafront Barcelona contains many examples of contemporary architects work. Caixa Forum Barcelona

Caixa Forum Barcelona Location: Av. de Francesc Ferrer i GuĂ rdia Date: 1911 (2002) The Caixa Forum is an art gallery. The building was originally a textile factory designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch. It later became to the Spanish National Police Force in 1940, it was then bought by the bank La Caixa in 1963 before being opened as an art gallery in 2002. The entrance was designed by Arata Isozaki, it contains a tree like canopy and a water feature with steps leading down from street level to the entrance. The gallery itself is constructed from brick and features vaults and ornamentation.
