DEFINITION ARTIST STATEMENT

Born as an Asian-American with a speech impediment, I experienced multiple problems with speech and my communication at a young age. Rather than ignore the miscommunication with my peers and elders, I creatively solved this obstacle with my passion for drawing. As I grew older, this passion branched into interactive arts, and later graphic design. I became exposed to graphic design with the emergence of MySpace and the creation of personal layouts — the visual expression. This led me to explore graphic design here at the University of Florida, becoming actively involved with Vox Graphis, and learning through trials and mistrials of what simply works. Typography had established my passion to communicate through aesthetics and the potential to express through manipulation and connotation of text. Vox Graphis continued this passion while simultaneously breaking down my problem of miscommunication, teaching me the best way to interact with the public and how the public perceives things. Graphic design isn’t just a communicative art, but a language itself. The relationship of text and image, the allusions of color, the importance of size — this experimentation to create a refreshing expression is what I live for. It’s all about the breaking of barriers, pushing the “perfect” 10 to 11 in hopes of making a connection not only between me and the client, but between one individual and the other.

CONNECTED An abstraction of our daily activities, this series seeks to visually represent our virtual transactions. Utilizing a mouse-monitoring program and vectors within Adobe Illustrator, the series explores the paths we take, the items we choose, and the harmonious chaos (or lack thereof) within the virtual world.

DAMN POSTCARDS These postcards were printed to inform the public attending Artbash about the presence of UF’s Digital Arts Media Network through the use of vibrant colors, straightforward layout, and playful interaction. The balance of geometric and humanist typefaces, combined with a red and green color scheme, resulted in a rather inviting and playful composition.

AMPLIFIED Memory and experience is essentially build-up, unable to be entirely removed from the mind. These works set to illustrate how memories, familiar objects, and locations are all intertwined, perceived, and processed in order to create current amplified experiences. The five canvas not only allude to the fives senses, but also the subcategories of the brain.
