P-BAY Online Auctions presents JOHAN BLEYEN (BE.) total auction

Johan Bleyen (BE.), coming man of the great middle distance, holds total auction at P-BAY.be... The magical year 2011 The name of Johan Bleyen of Lommel will forever be connected with the magical year 2011. You know how it is: being a champion, being a “name” in pigeonsport has mainly to do with regular performances. This is linked to having a colony of quality pigeons making this possible. This is something else than one hit wonders who perform strongly once, never to be heard from again. Nevertheless even for a champion one year is different from the other. Pigeonsport knows too many factors that are outside of the competence of the fancier and are as such connected to that little bit of luck which always accompanies top performances. And so every champion has that special year when all of the pieces of the puzzle come together and gold seems to drop out of the sky. For Johan that special year was 2011. On May 28th, with the season barely beginning, he immediately won the 1st and 2nd National Zone Bourges Old birds against 8439 pigeons, of course also good for a 1st and 2nd Provincial against 3523 pigeons. On clublevel, against 204 pigeons he scored 1, 2, 4, 13, etc. with 6 prizes on 7 basketed pigeons. On the National level Johan’s first two birds were 3rd and 4th against 24676 pigeons. With the yearlings he didn’t leave much for his competitors either: 1st and 5th National Zone against 6049 pigeons, 1st and 5th Provincial against 2512 pigeons and 1st and 3rd Club against 207 pigeons with 6 prizes on 8 basketed birds. On the National level, against 20544 yearlings he took a 4th and 13th position.

With the season now in full swing he scored again on Chateauroux: 3rd Provincial Yearlings against 2253 pigeons, good for a 1st prize on club level. The weak after that on La Châtre: 2nd National Old birds against 15780 pigeons, as well as a 2nd Provincial against 1294 pigeons and 2nd Club. With the yearlings he won a 7th National against 21180 pigeons, good for a 5th Provincial against 1696 pigeons and a 3rd Club. For just about every fancier this would have been enough to call the season a success, but Johan’s hunger for more wasn’t satisfied just yet. On the 2nd of July yearling “Gilbert”, already with a 1st National Zone Bourges, 2nd Pithiviers, 2nd Soissons and 4th National Bourges on his records list, stormed without hesitation towards a 1st Provincial Argenton against 1259 pigeons. His collegue, “Den 068”, already in possession of a 1st Nanteuil against 1624 pigeons and a 5th National Zone and 13th National Bourges against 20544 pigeons, took the 4th Provincial in that same race. By the time Bourges II arrived on the 30th of July the loft in Lommel had already scored an impressive 44 first prizes, doubles included. Half July the yearlings had scored a 3rd Provincial Orleans against 2079 pigeons as well. Now a few first prizes were added to the list when a check yearling cock with ringnumber 5103145/10 won a 1st National Bourges against 12608 pigeons, evidently also good for a 1st Provincial and 1st Club, where Johan also scored a 4th and 9th,

among others. The little bit of luck was that year definitely on Johan Bleyen’s side! Source of the achievements Of course, “luck is where preparation meets opportunity”. Luck must be forced a bit sometimes with a good preparation. For Johan that preparation was the purchase of a dozen pigeons with proven performance from the total auction of the worldfamous combine Heremans-Ceusters in February 2007. Among others lot 140 “Obelix”, lot 165 “Fiona”, lot 168 “De 191” and lot 226 “Dino” moved to the lofts in Lommel. Not a cheap choice of course, but Johan had done his homework well. “Fiona”, daughter of the direct Maurice Haesendonckx “Favoriet” and a full sister of “Natalia”, 1st Acepigeon Long Distance Yearlings in the Antwerp Union, and of “Limoges”, 2nd Provincial Limoges, won 14 prizes, 12 of which in the top 10 percent. “Dino”, 3rd National Acepigeon Sprint Young birds Ave Regina 2006, on father’s side a descendant of the “Olympiade” line of Gust Jansen and on mother’s side a descendant of the “Kannibaal” line of Dirk Van Dyck, was mentioned on page 37 of the Heremans-Ceusters sales program under the heading “The Future”. These were no idle words because on the loft in Lommel the “Dino” x “Fiona” combination was worth its weight in gold. The “904/09”, 2nd National La Châtre, was a direct son from this pair. They were also the grandparents of the 1st National Bourges. “Obelix”, 2nd National Acepigeon Sprint Old

birds Ave Regina 2006, and possessing a records list of 31 prizes in the top 10 percent, among which 2 firsts, 5 seconds, a third and in total 14 prizes among the top 7, traced its lineage strongly towards the line of “Wonderaske”, Best Young Bird of Belgium in 2001, 1st National Acepigeon Ave Regina in all categories and 1st Acepigeon in the Antwerp Long Distance Club, who meant the international breakthrough for Leo Heremans and Karel Ceusters and who was mentioned in the same breath with “Fieneke” of Flor Vervoort and “Marieke” of Jos and Jules Engels. “Obelix” too proved its superior breeding value for Johan Bleyen. “Gilbert”, mentioned above, came out of his line. “Gilbert” on the other hand was also a descendant of the “De 191” hen. Despite her rather prozaïc name this unraced hen boasted a phenomenal pedigree. She was a direct daughter of Gust Jansen’s “Olympiade”, mated to “Blauw Kampioentje” and therefore a full sister of “Jackpot”, father of the worldfamous “Di Caprio”. In other words, this was an impressive series of acquisitions, which would clear the path for Johan Bleyen on the Great Middle Distance, especially in combination with the strong base which was already present on the lofts in Lommel. Johan had no lack of experience either. He started keeping pigeons in 1980 but his busy work schedule had prevented him from racing at full speed. A second start happened only in 2001 when Johan purchased pigeons from Jan Diels, Gust Geentjens, Jos Haesendonckx (supplier of the mother of the 1st Nanteuil, 4th Provincial Argenton and 5th National Zone Bourges “Den 068”) and especially from fellow-villager Jef Hendrikx. Hendrikx, a small fancier and rather unknown by the public at large, scored with his pigeons

based on strong local fanciers and supplemented with a bit of Janssen Arendonk through De Klak, an impressive records list, among which a 3rd National. His strongly inbred strain was a perfect match for the Heremans-Ceusters birds (the mother of the 1st National Bourges, mated to a son of “Dino” x “Fiona”, was a direct Hendrikx. The father of “Gilbert”, a pigeon that had won 9 firsts from Mommignies to La Ferte, also came from the Hendrikx loft), but had also been at the origin of Johan’s successes on regional and provincial sprint and middle distance races from 2001 to 2011. Needless to mention that the loft Johan Bleyen was now, with its upgrade to the great middle distance, ready to storm the highest regions of the pigeon sport. Meanwhile other National

top prizes were won, such as a 2nd La Châtre against 15780 pigeons, a 5th Montluçon against 17865 pigeons, a 4th and 6th Bourges against 10035 pigeons, a 15th Chateauroux against 19691 pigeons, a 9th Montluçon against 21827 pigeons, a 24th Argenton against 16325 pigeons, a 21st Argenton against 22463 pigeons, etc. All of them proof of the top quality of the colony in Lommel. For personal reasons however, Johan Bleyen for now has to call it quits. All his proven super birds will be sold through P-Bay. Such an opportunity doesn’t come along every day, so don’t let it pass you by!
