This conversation, held on a cold November afternoon at the kitchentable of a modest house in the village of Grote-Spouwen in Belgium’s Limburg province, may sound like a bit of a joke, but there is actually a lot of truth in it. Imagine living near someone like Frans Rondags and having to race your pigeons against his. In 2017 Rondags won 83 first prizes. That’s right, 83. Without doubles. 83 pure firsts; that’s enough to make anybody lose heart. And so, while Frans Rondags has a twinkle in his eye when he gave the answer to the obvious question above, there may indeed be a lot of fanciers that are relieved Frans is starting afresh and is selling off the top team that has brought him so many victories. If these fanciers are smart, they would do best to try and purchase some of the high quality material that make the upcoming auction a unique opportunity. Indeed, his competitors might well be prepared. Because knowing Frans Rondags, it won’t take long before he is once more on top of his game. After all, he’s done it before…
him with a double leg fracture and shattered his dream. Never one to allow himself to stay down for long, Frans teamed up with his father and started to pursue the top in pigeon racing with as much vigor and professionalism as he had been playing football. He soon noticed that the bunch of birds he started out with were going to get him nowhere to achieve the results he craved. In 1982 he gave them a final chance to prove themselves on St. Vincent, but none returned. So in 1983 Frans Rondags found himself on square one with 12 yearlings and a lot of ambition. The pigeon sport history of the Rondags family starts with father Laurent. His exploits on the sprint races instigated the interest of son Frans, although at first the call of playing football is stronger. Talented and totally dedicated, Frans managed to land himself a spot in Tongeren’s first team, playing in second division and the future looked bright. Until an accident left
capital of 2000 BEF (50 euro in today’s money) on the table and decided to give himself 3 years to get up and running. In ’84 he got a good breeding pair from local fanciers in the village of his birth, Lafelt, and got to work in earnest. Ever since, he never had to put extra money on the table to cover his costs…

Right from the start the Rondags colony consisted of a mix of bloodlines. Birds of their neighbors Louis Fidler and Fons Simenon were put together with stock from the Debaere brothers of Nokere. A couple of pigeons from Dolf Verschueren of Bonheiden brought extra speed up to 200 km. A great pigeon of Denis Beusen, the best racer of the area of Herve, completed the starting hodgepodge. Then Frans Rondags ran into Paul Huls of Zonhoven. Both fanciers shared a common ambition to excel and a professional attitude to make this ambition come true. Huls collection included Vandenabeeles out of “Picanol” and “Wittenbuik”, Karel Schellens out of the “National Bourges”, Dirk Van Dyck out of “Kannibaal”, Antoon and Hilde Reynaert out of “Figo”, Flor Vervoort, Broeckx-Van Hees out of the Olympiad birds “Mister Turbo Bazel” and “Miss Gran Canaria” and “old Vercammens” and Stoces which make up his basic pair. Pigeons with a strong vitality and expressive eyes. Rondags and Huls exchange pigeons and hit gold. In 1998 Huls wins 1st National Argenton Young Birds. In 1999 Frans and Laurent Rondags are crowned 1st National Champion Yearlings KBDB and General Provincial Champion of Limburg in 1998 and 1999. Father and son Rondags also win the “Gold birdsn Duif”. German fancier Ernst Nebel wants to add the team in his prestigious catalog but is stupefied when he actually visits the lofts. The ramshackle affair that houses the top racers is just too ugly in his
eyes. The contrast with the high profile lofts and even castles that adorn the pages of his book is simply to big. Frans thinks the whole situation is just too funny. The pigeons feel great on the loft and rack up one victory after another. The Rondags name is on everybody’s lips. Unfortunately such success also draws unwanted attention. On the 2nd of January 2000 the new millennium starts badly for the lofts in Lafelt. Thirty six breeders are stolen; the core of Rondags’ success is gone. Father Laurent never recovers from this blow. He starts to cry every time he thinks about it. But life goes on. Fortunately Paul Huls comes to the rescue with 70 youngsters. At the end of the year they are all sifted according to strict criteria. Only the best of the best are retained. Muscle suppleness, firm body construction, softness of the feathers and especially quality of the eye - Huls is an eye fanatic that keeps his magnifying glass close at hand - are all taken into consideration. In the end only 30 birds are retained and will form the foundation of Frans Rondags’ new stock loft. And what a foundation they are. Anyone who thought the cowardly theft would have put Frans and Laurent out of business soon has got another thing coming. The new team hits the ground running and barely a year young birdsr, in 2001, Team Rondags is once more 1st National Champion Yearlings KBDB and General Provincial Champion of Limburg. The next six years
they would win this title no less than 4 times. In ten years they add no less than 458 first prizes to their record list. The loft is literally riddled with superstars; it is almost as if Frans and Laurent are spoiled for choice on which birds to basket for a race. Top of the bill is “Tom”, a magnificent blue cock, 5136212/04. In a racing career of four years “Tom” racks up no less than _________________________
“ As a favor to the other fanciers in the neighborhood. ” (Frans Rondags) _________________________ 60 prizes, of which 43 are in the top 10 %. “Tom” is 4 times 3rd, 6 times 2nd and a phenomenal 16 times 1st. His pedigree is a reflection of Frans’ policy of strict selection and choosing only the best of the best. Next to “Tom” himself, Tom’s father is sire to no less than 6 other 1st prize winners and grandfather to 9 more. Tom’s grandfather, out of the line of Dolf Verschueren, won 11 times 1st. His grandmother is “Speedy Girl”. This amazing breeding hen from the lofts of Paul Huls won 4 times 1st and her descendants would go on to win a truckload of top prizes as well. Tom’s mother is a
daughter of “De Crack”, winner of 10 firsts, mated to his own aunt, making her inbred towards “Old birds Salien”, 742/92, winner of 23 1st prizes. Another star on the Rondags loft is “Lewis”, winner of 77 prizes, 45 in the top 10 %, 9 times 1st and 6 times 2nd. Cousin to “Tom” - his father is a full brother of Tom’s father - “Lewis” is actually the faster of the two. Unfortunately he is slow to enter the loft, so “Tom” often beats him to the clock. Nevertheless his qualities are obvious and Frans will young birdsr buy him back in the auction… That auction came in 2008. The year before Laurent had passed away, his heart that was broken by the theft of 2000 somewhat mended by the fantastic results the Rondags team had been able to collect. The auction contained no less than 26 pigeons with a 1st prize on their record list, 18 pigeons with 2 firsts, 10 pigeons with 3 firsts, 6 pigeons with 4 firsts, 2 pigeons with 5 firsts, 1 pigeon with 7 firsts, 1 pigeon with 8 firsts and of course “Lewis” with 9 firsts and “Tom” with 16 firsts. Raw figures that show the exceptional quality of the Rondags birds. Despite the continuing success however, Frans was getting a bit tired after his father passed away. His job, the care of his family, running back and forth between the new breeding lofts at his house in Grote-Spouwen and the old racing loft in Lafelt got the better of him and he decided to call
it a day. He had finished the 2008 season with yet another 31 pure 1st prizes. It seemed a worthy farewell to the sport. However, there is no antibiotic that is effective against the pigeon sport bug and so Frans couldn’t help but reclaiming a superstar like “Lewis”, even though it cost him a small fortune. The new, nice looking lofts at Grote-Spouwen were there anyway - this time Ernst Nebel found them worthy of his princely catalog by the way - and it wasn’t long before they were once more popuyoung birdsd with pigeons. New stock, coming from his own line through friends that he had helped out by giving them eggs, 3 directs from his great friend Paul Huls and a super from a friend that had passed away; those were the basic material that was ready to give the Rondags name another go. Only this time the next generation was ready to storm the field. Frans’

son Gert had meanwhile taken an interest in the birds and was keen on making his mark. In 2010 Gert, assisted by his father’s huge experience, made sure team Rondags was back with a vengeance. The goal for that first season, of course racing only young birds, was a very modest 5 victories, especially because the position for racing of the Grote-Spouwen loft - originally only conceived as a breeding loft - was far from ideal. Neighboring fanciers were firm in their opinion: “Nobody races well here.” But Frans and Gert Rondags were anything but “nobody”. Right from the start they racked up no less than 18 firsts. Granted, it wasn’t the 46 wins per season they used to score on average in the 1999 to 2008 period, but nevertheless a result that would have made any beginner envious. In fact it was a result that would have made a lot of experienced fancies envious as well! With an additional 1st Provincial Champion Beginners title in his pocket, Gert got off to a flying start and was ready for the future. 2011 saw a continued success for the new chapter in the Rondags pigeon sport history: 29 first prizes and 24 second places made it look like Frans and Gert were going to re-establish the amazing record lists people were used to seeing the previous decade. It became clear the investment Frans had made by buying back “Lewis” wasn’t just due to a sentimental whim. A son of “Lewis”, mated to a daughter of Paul
Huls’ famous “Speedy Girl”, generated “First Lady”. Winning 7 prizes in the top 1 % in 2011 and 21 top prizes in 2012, the next year saw her perform even stronger, landing her the title of 1st Provincial Ace pigeon KBDB short middle distance old birds. In the National Ace pigeon KBDB competition she ended up 2nd only due to a strange quirk in the National Federation’s rules that discounted the results of the first weekend of the season. Without this inexplicable rule she would have been 1st National Ace pigeon KBDB short middle distance old birds to boot. It was a disappointment for a young fancier like Gert, although becoming the 1st National Champion Youth and the 1st Provincial Champion short middle distance with the first two nominated birds for 2013 certainly was a salve for his wounded feelings. On the National level Frans and Gert were 4th Champion sprint young birds and 4th Champion short middle distance old birds as well. The 2013 Provincial level saw them also win the titles of 2nd Champion sprint young birds (first two nominated) and 10th General Champion. With 53 first prizes in 2012 and 63 victories in 2013 the Rondags loft was certainly back up to speed. Although so far the focus had mostly been on sprints and short middle distance, Frans and Gert slowly but surely started setting their sights on the great middle distance as well. Once more they went to their friend Paul Huls and as usual they were
not let down. The race from Argenton, 556 km, resulted in a 1st Provincial against 792 pigeons, 1st National Zone against 859 pigeons and 2nd National against 5941 with the aptly named “Rambo”, a blue 2011 cock. As is habitual on the Rondags loft, Rambo’s pedigree is spotless with ancestors as the worldfamous “Kannibaal”, 1st National Bourges winner “Figo” and 1st National Argenton winner “Aline”. On many lofts such an Ace would have been sold off immediately, but not so in Grote-Spouwen where they have been knowing for a long time that winners are bred from winners and where strict selection based on results is the key to success. So “Rambo” was simply raced again in 2014, adding a 19th Provincial Gien against 7916 birds to his record list. 3rd Provincial Acepigeon short middle distance 2013 “Martine” met the same fate and confirmed her quality by winning another 5 firsts in the 2014 season as well. Anyone still wondering where the astonishing success of the Rondags loft is coming from now has the answer. That this continuing quest for excellence kept on producing top results comes as no surprise. In 2014 Gert Rondags was crowned 1st National Champion Youth KBDB for the second year in a row after a season with 73 victories. He also won the National Youth Criterium and “Martine” was 3rd National Ace pigeon short middle distance. 2015 passed with another 45 1st prizes and an avalanche of chain results: the first 4 positions, the first 5, the first 7, … It must have
Gert Rondags made the competition desperate. The end of the 2016 season meant another 1st in the National Youth Criterium for Gert, now in his early twenties. Instigator of this repeated success was “Young birds Bolt”, grandson of Leo Heremans’ legendary sprint Ace. Through the hens in his pedigree “Young birds Bolt” was also slightly inbred towards “Tom” and therefore another proof of how Frans Rondags’ expertise carefully matched new top performers to his own successful basic bloodline. Other quality breeders that were added to the loft originated from Geert and Annick Vanrenterghem, Louis Ceyssens, Edmond Konings, Kamiel Vos, Frank Neven, Frans Caubergh, Herbots family and Noël Petré-Robijns. The Rondags loft now contained everything needed for races up to 600 km. Finally, the 2017 season came and went with a stupefying 83 pure victories and winning the General Provincial Championship KBDB of Limburg.
The above series of wonder years really leaves fanciers with very limited options: either beat them or join them. Since beating them is next to impossible due to the unsurpassed quality of their pigeons, joining them is the only sensible thing to do. Fortunately joining them is now made possible due to the generosity of Frans Rondags who puts almost the entire racing stock on auction, retaining only the breeders. In the words of Frans Rondags himself: “This is a top team that now comes up for sale.” Starting once again from the basics, in the years to come Frans en Gert Rondags will face a new challenge to get back on top. Fanciers in the area get a bit of a break. Fanciers worldwide are now given the opportunity to profit from decades of expertise and careful selection and to reinforce their lofts with pure gold.
